Rose White, spokeswoman for AAA-Nebraska, says the motor club is forecasting more than 41-million Americans will be taking trips during the holiday, a five-percent increase from last year and the largest number in a dozen years. White says, “Of those traveling, about 36.6- million will travel by car, another 3.1-million will fly to their destinations and 1.8-million will travel by other modes, includ- ing cruise ship.” Crude oil prices are up and gasoline prices are following suit, though White says higher pump prices won’t de- ter most motorists from hitting the holiday road. “Here in Ne- braska, we are seeing the average at $2.75 a gallon, which is up about 46-cents compared to what we saw last year,” White says. “Things you can do to save on fuel include: avoid aggres- sive driving, combine errands when possible and consider using a higher ethanol blend of fuel.” ROADWAY PAINT STRIPING Roadway paint striping has begun May 14 in Kearney County, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Vo- gel Traffic Services, Inc., of Orange City, Iowa has the contract for the district wide striping. After striping is complete in Kear- ney County, work will progress to Franklin, Phelps, and Harlan counties. In early June, Vogel will be working in Gosper, Fur- nas, Red Willow, and Frontier counties. Mid-June work will be completed in Hitchcock, Hayes, Dundy, Chase, and Perkins counties. Delays to the travelling public will be limited to slow travelling paint trucks. The anticipated completion date is June 18. The Department’s project manager is Jared Kreher of Hol- drege. Motorists are advised to use caution when encountering construction vehicles on the roadway. SECURED REPUBLICAN NOMINATION Nebraska State Sen. John Murante has secured the Republican nomination for state treasurer and is all but certain to win the office in November. Murante’s victory in Tuesday’s primary sets him on the path to replace current State Treasurer Don Sten- berg, who is ineligible to run because of term limits. No Democ- ratic or third-party candidates have filed to run. Murante de- feated financial adviser Taylor Royal, a former Omaha may- oral candidate who highlighted his experience in accounting. Murante, of Gretna, was first elected to the Legislature in 2012 and was re-elected without a challenger in 2016. He has touted himself as a staunch conservative with endorsements from most of Nebraska’s top Republican officials, including Stenberg. INTERESTING FACT

The world Dracula actually comes from the Irish word "Droch Ola", which means "bad blood". It is

thought that the author of Dracula wrote the book as a metaphor of the

way Irish landlords treated their peasants (sucking the life out of

them) during the 1845 great famine.

SPORTS The McCook Community College golfers had a rough first day at

the NJCAA National meet in Lubbock, Texas yesterday. MCC

coach Tyler Loop said his team didn't have a chance to finish the

round because of weather. The Indians were sitting in 20th

place overall. Indian Hills led the field after day one with a team

score of 277. Cambridge junior Preston Carbaugh qualified for

the Class C state tournament with a round of 80 yesterday, good

enough for seventh place in the Class C5 district at Kimball.

The Nebraska-Kearney track and field team has qualified two

men and two women for the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor

Championships. The three-day meet starts Thursday, May 24, in

Charlotte, N.C., and is hosted by Johnson C. Smith University. A

top eight finish is good for All-American honors; finishers nine

through 12 are tabbed second-team All-Americans by the

USTFCCA (U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Assoc.). Re-

peat qualifiers for this meet are senior Bailey Stapleman in the

pole vault and junior Jacob Bartling in both the shot put and

discus. Heading to outdoor nationals for the first time are

throwers Mackenzie Crowder and true freshman Anna Squiers.

Crowder qualified for the 2016 NCAA indoor meet in the weight

throw. As always, some Lopers just missed out on qualifying.

That group included McCook senior Marcus Gonzales (hammer),

Ord junior Andrew Fields (steeplechase), Cairo junior Grant

Myers (pole vault), Deweese sophomore Corbin Hansen

(steeplechase) and Florida freshman Montrez Jackson (high

jump). All five were ranked 22-24 nationally in their respective

event.
