NATIONAL FFA WEEK Nebraska’s 7,400 FFA members will mark the start of National FFA Week tomorrow by driving their tractors into town, holding pancake breakfasts and other events to celebrate. Kurt Veld- huizen, an FFA advisor, says the organization has played a vital role in teaching today’s students about the ag economy of the 21st century. “We’re rooted in agriculture,” Veldhuizen says, “and our number-one goal is there in our mission statement that leadership, personal growth and career success for our students and we just use agriculture kind of as the path.” Agriculture is the nation’s top industry and currently employs more than 24-million people. Op- portunities abound as there are 11 jobs for every single applicant in the ag industry. While the organization used to be known as Future Farmers of America, the FFA has grown with the times and with technology. “Agriculture has broadened out so much in the last 20 years,” Veldhuizen says. “We used to think 40 or 50 years ago that agriculture was just farming. Today, the farmer has to be supported by so many different fields and careers and op- portunities for these kids to get involved in. That’s really exciting.” This year marks the 90th anniversary of the FFA program, founded in 1928. Many FFA chapters statewide will have special theme days next week, introducing elementary students to the world of agriculture. TAX REVENUE IS STRONG Tax revenue came in stronger than expected in January, but Gov. Pete Ricketts cautions against reading too much into the January revenue report. Gross General Fund receipts for January totaled $466 million, 6.6% above the forecast of $437 million. Net re- ceipts for January totaled $421 million; tax came in 2.2% above the forecast with individual income tax 18.8% above forecast, with net corporate income coming in 47.3% above the forecast. Net General Fund receipts for fiscal year 2017-18 were $2.585 bil- lion, 3.1% above the certified forecast of $2.508 billion. Gov. Ricketts’ office issued a statement from the governor, cautioning against making too much of the report. SPORTS Southwest Nebraska wrestlers did very well on day one of the Nebraska state high school wrestling champion-ships in Omaha. Cambridge has three in the semifinal round tonight in Matt Pearson, Seth Andrews and Tyler Schultz. Southern Valley's Chase Becker also made it to the semifinal round at Class C 160. Aaron Hinojosa of Chase County is one win away from an appearance in the Class C 220 pound final after winning his first two matches yesterday. McCook's Alec Langan and Kaleb Tay-lor will compete in the Class B second-round consolations this morning after splitting their first two matches yester-day. Trevor Felber lost his opener and will be in the first round consolations this morning. Listen for more hourly updates from Omaha with Mike Carnes on 96.1 KICX and 103.9 The Hawk. The Bison boys wrapped up their regular season with a 60-43 win at Cozad last night. Hunter Potthoff led three Bison in double figures with 20 points. The Bison will face Hastings in their Class B7 district semifinal game on Mon-day in Lexington. Hitchcock County, Maywood-Hayes Cen-ter and Cambridge all moved within one game of qualify-ing for the state girl’s basketball tournament with wins last night. The McCook Community College basketball teams head to Sterling, Colorado for games with North-eastern Junior College.
