Dur- ing a stop in North Platte, Jenni Benson talked about efforts to launch a non-profit group to keep the educators in the state and to better develop the educators who work with our children daily. “We started a new 501(c)(3) this past year to help with professional development, to look at the whole child and also the whole teacher,” Benson says. “We’re doing some things with kids who are struggling. We need some support systems in place to help them.” Classroom safety is a concern of parents and residents throughout the state, and Benson stresses educators are also concerned. “Our teachers are also our family members, they have kids in school as well or grandkids, like myself, I have seven grandkids,” Benson says. “We are concerned about the safety and security of our students, of our faculty.” Benson says it’s vital to provide younger generations with tools outside of the classroom, whether that’s through established programs like FFA or Skills USA, or a relatively new program called Educator Rising. “(That’s for) kids in high school saying, ‘Hey, maybe I want to be a teacher,’ and we have a lot of programs across the state,” Benson says. “It’s now a club through the Department of Ed and we have 38 chapters in Nebraska. GREAT WAY TO START THE FISCAL YEAR The latest monthly state tax receipts are again up over forecast. State Tax Commissioner Tony Fulton tells says it is a great way to start out a new fiscal year. “We ended out the month about $20 mil- lion ahead of what the certified forecast was predicting.” says Fulton. “So that is certainly good news.” Fulton also cautions that, overall, it was a pretty small month in respect to revenues coming in to the state’s treasury, “but nevertheless, we’re off to a good start.” Net state receipts for July are up almost 8 percent over the certified fore- cast. Net individual income tax receipts are up almost 21 percent over the forecast while net sales and use tax receipts are up 7.3 per- cent. However, Net corporate income was almost 26 percent below the forecast. Fulton says that is because corporate revenue is a small number compared to sales and income tax revenue. REVIEW OF PROPOSED PATHWAY A federal judge has ordered the U.S. State Department to conduct a more thorough review of the Keystone XL pipeline’s proposed path- way after Nebraska state regulators changed the route. U.S. District Judge Brian Morris of Montana said in a ruling Wednesday that the State Department must supplement its 2014 environmental impact study of the project to consider the new route. The Nebraska Public Service Commission rejected pipeline developer TransCanada’s pre- ferred route in November 2017, but approved a different pathway. Last month, the State Department declared the pipeline would not have a major impact on Nebraska’s water, land or wildlife. It’s not clear whether the additional review will delay the project. Tran- sCanada spokesman Matthew John says company officials are re- viewing the judge’s decision.
