Mary Rittenhouse, assistant professor and division chair of the NCTA Ag Business Management Systems division, announced the inaugural campus initiative last week. Ag Business Club students from will be assisting NCTA’s AMS faculty in hosting the daylong symposium to be held at the Nebraska Agriculture Industry Educa- tion Center on campus. The symposium will feature agricultural own- ership and management transition, legal and estate planning, real estate and insurance, and marketing. Featured speaker will be Cortney Cowley, economist with Omaha Branch of the Federal Re- serve Bank of Kansas City, who will discuss “Tightening in the Ag Belt.” Additional program details and speakers will be announced in mid-December. Further details will be available from Rittenhouse at (308) 367-5275 or see ncta.unl.edu. LARGEST FARM & RANCH FETCHED HUGE BIDS One of Nebraska’s largest farm and ranch operations fetched $37,555,000 in bids at auction Thursday, according to the Omaha World-Herald. The auction of Thomas Land Co., a 28,645-acre op- eration that overlooked Lake McConaughy, attracted international interest but drew a mostly regional crowd of 300 people to the Keith County Fairgrounds. The operation’s 45 square miles of ranch and farmland would roughly cover Omaha from the Missouri River on the east to Interstate 680 on the west and from Dodge Street south to the Douglas-Sarpy County line along Harrison Street. Hall and Hall Auctions offered the land in 50 parcels, and bidders were permitted to bundle the tracts across parts of Keith, Perkins and Deuel Counties into any size. Bidding took nearly seven hours to complete. In the end, 19 bidders were alone on the leader board. The average price per acre was $1,405. The property included grassland, nonirrigated cropland and center-pivot irrigated crop- land. Bill Sheridan, a Mason, Michigan, auctioneer who helped with the sale, said the $37.5 million in bids was a fairly accurate indica- tor of the value of the operation. He said Hall and Hall’s inside ap- praiser estimated the property would sell for $34 million to $38 million. CHUCK HAGEL URGES Former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, speaking in Charlotte on Thursday, urged the U.S. not to turn away from alliances and inter- national trade that have formed the underpinnings of the post- World War II order. And Hagel said President-elect Donald Trump whom he criticized strongly during the campaign needs a chance to form his Cabinet and set his priorities. “We have to give any president time to put his government together and then see where he wants to take the country,” Hagel told the Charlotte Ob- server. “The wise thing to do is let that play out. Let’s see where he wants to go.” The former Republican senator from Nebraska served as defense secretary in the Obama administration from 2013 to 2015.
