Newsflash [email protected] 308-345-5400 www.highplainsradio.net POSSIBLE SEVERE WEATHER THIS AFTERNOON Severe thunderstorms may develop in southeast Colorado by this afternoon and then spread into northeast Colorado, northwest Kan- sas, and southwest Nebraska later according to the National Weather Service and Weather Eye. The threat for severe thunder- storms will continue through the evening. Large hail around the size of ping pong balls and damaging winds up to 70 mph are the pri- mary threats, however a few tornadoes will be possible. Locally heavy rainfall is expected tonight through Monday with some loca- tions receiving between 3-6 inches of rain. ECONOMY SHOULD GROW The Nebraska economy should grow rapidly during the second half of 2016, according to the latest leading economic indicator report from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The indicator, a composite of economic factors that predict growth six months into the future, increased by 1.92 percent in March. “The rapid increase in the value of the leading indicator signals strong economic growth in Nebraska during the second half of 2016” said economist Eric Thompson, director of the Bureau of Business Research at the Uni- versity of Nebraska-Lincoln. Most components of the leading indica- tor improved during March. Respondents to the March Survey of Nebraska Business predicted strong growth in both sales and em- ployment at their businesses. There also was an increase in building permits for single-family homes and manufacturing hours during the month. Finally, for the second consecutive month, the value of the U.S. dollar declined in March. “The combination of a declining U.S. dollar and strong business expectations suggests strength in both the industrial and service sectors of the state economy,” said Thompson. DEADLINE MONDAY If you're scrambling to finish your tax return by the end of the day, relax. You've got a few more days to file. The usual April 15 filing deadline has been pushed pack to April 18 for 2016. That's Mon- day. The switch applies to both federal and state returns. You can thank the Emancipation Day holiday in the District of Columbia for the extra time. Emancipation Day is a celebration of the anniver- sary of the Compensated Emancipation Act. Signed by President Abraham Lincoln on April 16, 1862, the act freed 3,000 slaves in the District of Columbia. Since April 16 is a Saturday this year, the holiday is celebrated today, April 15. And since the Internal Reve- nue Service is based in the District of Columbia, the tax filing dead- line was switched to Monday. (In Massachusetts and Maine, the deadline is Tuesday, April 19, because Monday is Patriots Day in those states.) Taxpayers who need even more time to complete their federal returns can request an automatic six-month extension. That can be done electronically through the Free File link on IRS.gov. The request must be filed by April 18 (April 19th for residents of Maine or Massachusetts.) The six-month extension gives taxpayers until Oct. 17 to file their returns. The only catch is you must estimate your tax liability and pay any amount due when you request the exten- sion.
