Dear Mike,
Jtme 12, 1981
After meeting with Michael Cardenas, the Administrator for the S.B.A., I concluded that I could be most helpful to the Reagan Team by assisting Mr. Cardenas as an Associate Administrator with the Department of :Management Assistance. I shall report for duty by the 1st of August.
Last week I read that the President was considering an August vacation in California. If this means that you will be vacationing in California in August also, I want to extend an invitation to use my place on the north shore near Tahoe City. This is one half of a duplex condominium which has three bedrooms and two and one half baths facing south on the lake. If you fell off of the porch, you would roll into the water. There is a swinnning pool and tennis courts, as well as a small boat harbor, even though there are only 30 tmits in the entire development. I would be pleased if you and your family and/or friends could make use of it as that is one of the principal reasons I keep it.
I hope to see you sometime after I return to Washington and thanks for your splendid support.
st wishes, ~

Dear Iliike:
Well, as "keeper of the body" you sure delivered. I don't know about those other guys, but speaking for myself
I have been stroked into submission for at least the next
six ttllhF I l hours.
But (as Steve Allen says), all seriousness aside, as the de facto leader of the Blair House Irregulars, I want to express my thanks, and theirs, for the meeting with the President. I think these get-togethers are helpful and hope Mr. Reagan feels the same way. Incidentally, when you have a moment, I'd appreciate hearing how the President reacted to the session -- if he did.
At the risk of telling you something I think you already know, Mike, I'd just like to reiterate: I'm a true-blue Reaganite Who, maybe, sometimes dpesn't "understand," or JJ TT who's
occasionally out of touch with "reality." I plead guilty to sometimes being holier than the Pope. But, my heart's in the right place. I want to help Ronald Reagan. I want history to record that he was the man who got this Nation back on the
path to greatness. Nuf sed.
PS -
Best regards,
John Lofton, Jr: Editor
There was only one, small thing wrong with our meeting. As I recall Mr. Reagan from our December Blair House meeting, he was a short, fat man With a blond crew-cut. Oh well, I'm probably mistaken. I'm sure the man we met with today is, in fact, the President. T}ianks again,Mike.

Dear Mr. Deaver,

~fa-· I '
Enclosed are zerox copies of letters written to Lyn Nofziger, which detail the course of action taken by 'rom Bruinooge in response to your phone call to him.
The packet of correspondence is designed to remove any doubts you may have as to wether or not Tom Bruinooge gave firm commitments of patronage positions to Bergenites.
Tom told Charlie Sumas, former mayor of Wyckoff, that you called him to learn, "why you were receiving so much mail from Bergen on behalf of Joan Pellett and Joyce Dobias."
We deeply appreciate the concern you have shown in this matter and thank you for your kindness,
I have been informed by many of my letter writing political associates, who wrote on my behalf, that your return correspondence advises, that I am currently under active consideration for a position in the Administration. I feel certain this development is a direct result of your intervention and I offer my most sincere thanks.
Yours truly,
Jo~ Joan Pellett

Bruinooge said late Friday that he had been calling the 42 state co:nmittcc members elected in last Tuesday's primary and that responses had been "very, very positive."
The committee members, who will select the chair· man Tuesday, will almost certainly follow the wishes of

Bruinoogc, 37, who was vice-chairman of Reagan's' New Jersey prcsidcl1tial campaign, said he had orga- ; nizcd winning campaigns on national, state, and local ~ levels. . ..,.
"One of the most important things is that the state chairman has to have a good relationship with the na· tional administration," s:.iid Bruinooge. "My credentials with the Hcagan administration are excellent."
Since November's election, he has kept close contact with the White House and with Raymond L. Donovan, the Secaucus construction company owner whom Reagan named secretary of labor.
"We had spoken with Tom Kean months ago·about what we wanted in a state chairman," said Bruinooge, who was with Donovan at that meeting. ·

Others who were suggested include four of Kean's primary opponents - Paterson Mayor Lmnencc ''Pat" Kramer, State Sen. Barry Parker of Burlington County, Hamilton Tow:iship Mayor John Haffcrty, and "Bo" Sullivan. One GOP insider said that Kramer and Parker · were not being seriously considered.
Also suggested were the names of Gloucester County Chairman Eugene McCaffrey, a close friend of Kean's, and Joseph Gonzalez of West Windsor Township, executive director of the Astiembly minority.
Two others recommended were Essex County Republican Chairman John Renna and Assemblyman Bill Gormley of Atlantic County, another Kean ally.
Tuesday night, Bruinooge traveled with Sullivan to Kean's hotel headquarters and met with the nominee in his hotel suite before Kean and Sullivan ap· peared together at l\can's victory party.
Bruinooge first caught Reagan's attention at the )976 Republican convention, when he cast the lone New Jersey delegate vote for Hcagan again:;t President Ford. Following the Novcmb('r election, there was speculation that Bruinooge was in line for a federal post, probably U.S. attorney, but he avoided talk of a fe~eral post.

Dear Mike:
I see you now have a wine adviser - a long way from the Sacramento days. All kidding aside, Mike, I think you and perhaps the President will find the enclosed clippings to be of interest. The reason I include, the President, is that I introduced him to Sonoma County wines (Pedroncelli) back in 1966 when he announced his candidacy, for Governor, here in Healdsburg, and I was the Master of Ceremonies at that dinner.
Subsequently during my service with his adminstration as Chairman of the California State Transportation Board, I did, pass on to him and Nancy a number of our fine wines. This I continued to do at the various Reagan Alumni Reunions.
In my letter of congratulation on his election to the Presidency I indicated I had a special bottle - laid down in 1967, I hoped someday to present to him. It is an Inglenook - Charbono - made before they became a conglomerate under United Vinters and now irreplaceable. As you are well aware "67" was the year he entered public service.
I have since been in contact with Nina Wormser, Deputy Director, Scheduling, Office of the First Lady, and she has agreed to assure the bottle will be delivered. I will drop it by her office when I am next in Washington. By the same token shall leave a bottle of Pedroncelli "70" for yourself which I think is superb. Pedroncelli although having gotten much larger is still family owned as it was in 66 when Ron first tasted their product - one of the few left.
Think you might enjoy the enclosed copy of a clipping which I really treasure along with the numerous letters I have, over the years, received from "The Governorn.
Kindest personal regards.

Dear Bill:
June 10, 1981
As a long-time associate and supporter of President Reagan, I think you will be pleased to know that a 'national "Reagan Political Items Collectors" Club has been organized. Although small in number, but growing, this group is devoted to supporting the President's programs as well as dedicated to ,the collection and preservation of Ronald Reagan memorabilia. There is no ~ubt in my mind that the research and certainly some of the collection of yarious R.R. items will eventually be turned over to a future Reagan Library or foundation.
As one of the original organizers of "R.P.I.C." I am bringing this to your attention and, of course, cordially inviting you to join, if interested. I believe the enclosed application form tells it all. We are strictly amateur in our approach although there is a market for R.R. materials and this wlll be a part of the quarterly "REAGAN REVIEW" which you would receive with your membership. The cost is minimal $10 per year) and the entire operation is run on a volunteer basis.
Personally, I hope you will join "R.P.).C".
Enclosure 1

We should do something special for Charlie Thone. He was the first governor to endorse in 1979.

Dear Berg:
You'd better slow Bob Driscoll down. His name is in the process and that's all. Frankly, I'm doubtful, given the situation in Zimbabwe, that we'll appoint someone other than a career Foreign Service Officer. I'm afraid Bob thinks his appointment is imminent and that is certainly not the case.
I'll keep you posted on Ted Maino.

Dear Berger: ~~~. I had an enjoyable brunch with Ted and Rosemary Maino } •
and Jim and Sandy Codding a few weeks ago, and Ted tells me ~ he is still awaiting some word on his hoped-for appointment. ~ I, likewise, am reading every newspaper I can to see what is / -going on in the Reagan administration concerning ambassador- ~~~ ships, in the hope I might somehow see my name among those !'_..,-selected. To date, I have had no indication that any FBI • checks or other investigations have been commenced respecting ~ me. I did receive confirmation from the office of Pendleton , James that they received my biographical material from Mike. ~
I have cleaned up most of my trial calendar, in the ~ hope that this appointment will come through, but I am beinc/ \_ beseiged by inventors and others to try lawsuits for them, as""4 a result of the well-publicized $31 Million verdict against ~ ;f Munsingwear in the "girdle case" I tried in March. Some of ~ ... ~. the prospective clients are offering substantial retainers, ~~ which I would gladly forego if I am still in the running for the Zimbabwe ambassadorship. w ~ Jze.r.
~ Anyway, do you think it would be possible for you to check further with Mike, or otherwise nudge him to follow up on my application? As you indicated earlier, Mike's help is~~ the best thing I could have going for me. I realize he is ~ busy with more important things, but maybe he'll pick up the phone and call the right person. I noted they named the ambassador to Australia the other day. If they are going alphabetically, it may take a long time to get to Zimbabwe. ~
In closing, remember that you have a standing invitati~ to Vermont this Autumn, between September 1 and November 30. I will write you later with details, hunting and fishing information, address, phone number, etc. Thanks again for your~~# support. I' - ~ ~
With kind personal regards.1Jiiil 4'-'k.. ~
