The CRLA is no lc·nger doing the work that the~: re supposed to "be doing, whi~11is supposedly helping the poor. Instsad they are harassing the farmers, and being an unnecessary evil in the lives of many people who are trying to earn an honest living.

I would urge you to disapprove· the budget the CRLA has presented for 1971.

As you reviev; the Budget for 1971-72 may I suggest that you seriously consider elimination of funds for the C.R.bh __ Qr __ _ at the very least a severe curtailment of their budget. ---......__.,.

In my opinion this organization has gone far beyond the original .intent of the Legislature.

The C.R.L.A. is using tax dollars to harass the entire Agricultural industry, the largest industry of the State, and the growers who are paying a large portion of the total tax bill in the State of California.

Thank ycu for your consideration and attention to this matter.

Sincerely yours,

The G2LA h2.s b~rpa.ssed its intended original purposes •• to help the poor individuals ·with their individual legal problems. rt has, instead, become a ncb.ss 11 project pitting all the poor people in one rtch.ssn against those, who b~r means of their own h::i.rd work are self supporting. Dear Governor Reagan:

Mrs. Fiske and I urge you to veto any and all appropriations for the C R L A. Page 38: Collection: Reagan, Ronald: Gubernatorial Papers,

Dear Governor Reagan,

556 Lewis Ave. Yuba City, Calif. Jan. 2, 1971

The singed edges on this letter are because I am completely burned up over the CRLA using my ta:x money to bring lawsu1 ts age.inst institutions which a.re also supported by my tax money.

The CRLA in my area (Yuba-Sutter) has sued (and lost) these widelypublicized cases:

1. SUecl Yuba City High School, trying to force them to allow longhaired hippies to attend ~chool without getting haircuts. (The spokesman for this group of boys is the son of a doctor, but the boys brought suit in the name of the boys who were poor enough to qualify for the services of the (tax-supported) CRLA. The school won, after spending 2000 _t_a,x do, .. 1Jars to fight the lawsuit J

2. Suedf.\;Sutter County Welfare director to try to force her to buy a new stove for a family which was already receiving the max.imum welfare benefits.

(When the case hit the papers, a local merchant offered the family a ~ lcondhand stove, but the CRLA refu.~~.Q.. 1 t, and 1ns1~ ~_!ill.roug_h with__iillSL.lru!§.Y .. lt, Gts a lesson to the welfare director, and possibly to hold out for St :ne·w stove.)

The welfare department won:-ifter presenting evidence that the present stove was not dangerous, but just needed cleaning up. It took a few thousand more tax dollars to win this case.

3. CRLA is now §.,1Jlng Marysville High School, trying to force them to re-instate a boy who was suspended for constant profanity, general incorrigibility, and (specifically) breaking another boy-':s jaw.

(The school is already facing a lawsuit from the parents of the boy with the broken jaw, besides facing the CRLA lawsuit on behalf of the jawbreaker.)

I feel as though I'm taking money out of one pocket to pay for filing each lawsuit, and taking money out of the other pocket to pay for defending the cases.

P'.1-ease, Mr. Reagan, stick to your guns and cut back enough funds so the CRLA can't afford to finance these frivolous cases.

And please hurry. Several boys have been suspended from Yuba City High f.or phoning bdmb threats to the school and for passing out filthy, revolutionary literature on the schoolgrounds. If the CRLA receives an extension in funding, they'll probably take this case next,

Please feel free to use this letter (but not my name} any way you see fit,

Sacramento, California

Dear Sir:

Rt. 1, Box 460A

Chico, Calif. 95926

12/20/70

I am very much concerned about the ectivities of the California

Rural Legal Assistance Association• I feel that they have departed

from their intended purpose of aiding the poor and have concentrated

too much on social and labor problems, harrassment of farmers and

changing the establishment. I do not believe that the taxpayer

should be called upon to finance these activities.

Therefore, I am asking you to delete from the state budget

all funds intended for the C.R.L.A. I am a farm owner-vperator from

Butte County who believes you are doing a good, honest job. Please

accept my sincere appreciation.

Respectfully,

~k~b t~~~~~-Robert D. Henni.gg_n;"~r.
