W ith the season for decorating, extending, main-taining and reno-

vating homes around the corner, the Spring Home Show is hitting Penrith just in time.

Now into its fi fth year, the show is returning to Penrith Panthers Pavilion on Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24, to allow local residents to stock up on ideas before they begin their spring projects around the home.

There will be over 90 exhibitors, showcasing their products for both indoor and outdoor projects to local residents.

“Building, renovating, decorat-ing, design, maintenance and lifestyle products will feature and visitors are encouraged to bring

Showalong plans, measurements and photos so that the experts can assist and in some cases off er a quote on the spot,” said Norm Lembke of Complete Exhibitions.

“Visitors will be sure to fi nd something of interest.”

There will be a number of prizes and competitions to enter, includ-ing a Hawaiian holiday lucky door prize, a brand new kitchen, $7,000 worth of guttering, a pet hamper and others.

“There will be plenty of products on sale at the show so visitors should ensure they have payment facilities and transport ready to take advantage of all the incred-ible show specials,” Mr Lembke said.

Visitors can also expect a number of demonstrations at the

show as well as a seminar series running alongside the expo, with presenters off ering tips on various topics, including DIY projects, decorating, interior design, granny fl ats, fi nancial advice and mortgage options.

Entry is free and the expo will be open from 10am on both Saturday and Sunday. There’s plenty of free parking, too.

O ne of Penrith’s newest communities, Jordan Springs, has won the title of ‘Community of

Choice’ at the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s (UDIA) NSW Awards for Excellence 2014.

The UDIA’s Awards for Excel-lence recognise the development’s reputation for delivering the high-est standard of overall design, sense of place, living options and delivery of key infrastructure.

Lend Lease Communities General Manager NSW, Arthur Ilias, explained that Lend Lease’s success came down to its approach on delivering key infrastructure, social and environmentally sustainable outcomes and aff ord-able living options within natural environments that residents could enjoy.

“We are delighted that the UDIA has recognised that Jordan Springs is a community of choice in western Sydney. ServiceSeeking.com.au has released the average hourly rate for various trade jobs, from a survey of 25,000 people around

New figures have revealed what you should expect to pay in terms of hourly rates when it comes to paint-ers, plumbers and other trades and services

Australia and the result might surprise you.

Looking at labour costs nation-ally, house painters charge the least at an average of $39.92 per hour, which has actually fallen from the year prior by 3.7 per cent.

Plumbing is by far the most expensive service costing an average of $76 per hour, followed

closely by prices charged by electricians at $68 an hour and concreting at $67.50 an hour.

Gyp-rocking and plastering on average should only cost you $46 an hour and carpentry only $50 an hour, meaning that new carport is actually rather aff ordable!

The website also found that NSW has the largest number of trade

G en Y households (aged 18-34) in NSW have amassed the nation’s highest personal

savings of $27,103. The build-up in savings comes as

many young fi rst home buyers are priced out of the property market.

“Young fi rst home buyers appear to be waiting on the sidelines for a chance to enter the market at a reasonable price,” said Executive Director of Customer Relations at ING Direct, John Arnott.

Key fi ndings for Q2 2014

(surveyed in July 2014):• Gen Y households (aged

18-34) in NSW have amassed the nation’s highest personal savings, with median savings of $27,103 per household – compared to $12,057 nation-ally

• Backed by a strong pool of savings, Gen Y households in NSW are less concerned about ‘maintaining lifestyle amid rising living costs’ – 29 per cent compared to 36 per cent of the state’s Gen X households

(aged 34-49) and 69 per cent of NSW Baby Boomers (aged 50-64)

• Gen Y households in NSW are taking additional steps to boost fi nancial wellbeing. 57 per cent plan to save more, compared to 41 per cent of all NSW households.

“The ongoing plans of the state’s Gen Y households to grow savings at the expense of non-essential expenditure suggest that home ownership remains a key personal goal,” said Mr Arnott.

to buy in an area before prices start to rise, and we also hope to sell before the market potentially drops. But timing can be difficult, especially in a boom like the one Sydney is currently experiencing. After all, by the time you’ve watched ‘sold’ prices for a few months, chances are prices have already shifted.

This month’s issue of Australian Property Investor reveals the suburbs with the biggest increases in asking prices over the past 12 months. They include Stanmore and Petersham in New South Wales, Unley and Newton in South Australia, South Yarra, La Trobe and Richmond in Victoria, Mosman Park in Western Australia and Gordon and South Hobart in Tasmania.

SQM Research, which has provided the exclusive data, argues tracking asking prices is a much better way of discovering where markets are improving or declining, rather than tracking sales figures.

A continued recovery in demand has helped lower vacancy rates across the Sydney CBD commercial offi ce market, according to the Property Coun-cil of Australia’s latest Offi ce Market Report. The vacancy rate across the CBD fell from nine per cent to 8.4 per cent, in the six months to July 2014.

L iving in a country like Australia most of us are very aware that when it comes to water it pays to

be as conservative as possible. In the spirit of doing your bit for the environment, Mitre 10 have some tips on ways that you can go about recycling water around your home.

Of course many of us are aware of simple things you can do like having shorter showers but there are other larger scale options for home owners to consider.

The fi rst option to consider is going grey. A grey-water diverter can help to make the most of the water your household uses for cleaning and washing by putting it back into the garden. This helps to not only save water, but also keep your outdoor areas happy

in the process. Another option is a rainwater tank. One of the benefi ts of having high demand for rainwater tanks is that there are now plenty of diff erent sizes, shapes and colours to choose from, meaning that even small yards can accommodate this

Being conservative with your water use can go far beyond just having shorter showers, with a range of options available even for the smallest of properties

water saving measure. The water captured in the tank can be used either on the garden or can be connected up to household items like showers, toilets or washing machines.

It’s not only inside the home where water recycling methods can be used. There are a few diff er-ent options for recycling outdoors as well. Rainwater diverters can

be used to direct water from down pipes to the garden. When plant-ing a garden consider using native trees and shrubs. These require less water and are hardier than other varieties. There are also plenty of garden supply products on the market that can help to
