S horter days and unpre-dictable temperatures make autumn one of the more challenging

seasons to navigate when it comes to looking after your lawn. However, with some love and attention, you can give your lawn the treatment it needs to remain healthy year round.

Australian turf grower and Turf Australia President Anthony Muscat has some must-dos for autumn lawn:

Fertilise: Fertilising gives your lawn the nutrients it needs to weather the winter elements and will help it maintain a rich, green colour throughout winter.

A slow-release, granular ferti-liser applied early to mid-autumn will gently feed your lawn and give you the best results. Check the forecast and fertilise just before rain is predicted, otherwise a light water after fertilising will help protect the lawn against leaf burn.

Clear the leaves: Autumn leaves look beautiful but aren’t so great for the lawn when they start to fall. To avoid smothering your lawn as well as developing any yellow or brown patches from built-up leaf litter, try to rake leaves daily to give your lawn the oxygen and sunlight it needs to be healthy.

Remove the weeds: If there are only a small number of weeds, dig them out by hand. If however the lawn is starting to become over-run, cooler autumn temperatures are a good opportunity to use a weed spray.

Dethatch: Dethatching removes older grass and mulch build-up from the under-layers of your lawn and encourages new and thick growth. Dethatching is easily done with a metal rake, or a thatching rake, or even your mower and autumn temperatures are ideal for this.

It’s a diff icult time of year when it comes to keeping your lawn looking good, but there’s a few things you can do to avoid disaster

have announced a re-elected Baird Government will crack down on underquoting by real estate agents in the property market.

Mr Baird made the announce-ment in Schofi elds and said the reforms are the biggest crack-down on real estate underquoting in over a decade.

“The reforms will improve confi -dence among homebuyers and close any loopholes that agents may be exploiting,” Mr Baird said.

“Under the new laws, it will be illegal for agents to advertise a property for less than the selling price they have outlined in their

agreement with the vendor. We want to create a fairer system for potential buyers who are prepared to spend money on building and pest inspection reports believing the property is in their price range.

“Agents caught underquoting already face fi nes of $22,000. Under the new laws, they will also lose all fees and commissions made from the sale.

“Buying a property is one of the biggest purchases many people will make, which is why we’re taking extra steps to ensure homebuyers have a fair market-place.”

Mr Mason-Cox said changes will be made to legislation to clear up the confusion around what constitutes underquoting.

“The new laws will also focus on advertising and will require all property advertisements to specify a dollar price or price range as opposed to ‘off ers over’ to give potential buyers a better idea of the real market value of the property,” he said.

“We’ll also protect vendors from agents who misrepresent a property’s potential selling price in return for the listing.”

B rad Drew was one of the toughest little men to play the game of rugby league.

Throughout his 18 seasons in the game, the nuggety hooker and occasional halfb ack was a very valuable player on the fi eld but a very underrated one off it.

He played for fi ve clubs includ-ing the Penrith Panthers, where he started his career, and the Parramatta Eels, where he made his one and only Grand Final appearance back in 2001.

Drew fi nished his NRL career in Canberra before switching their cold weather with the north of England’s for a fi ve year stint in the English Super League.

When he fi nally returned to Australia, Drew landed a job as

a program coordinator and high performance coach for the NRL and Australian Institute of Sport.

But while footy was his known passion for more than two decades, there was also some-thing else that tickled his fancy – real estate.

Recently, the 39-year-old decided to turn that long time passion into his profession when he signed on to become the new Sales and Leasing Consultant at Michael Ball Realty in Penrith.

Drew explained how he scored his fi rst job in real estate.

Bits&Pieces A Foley Labor Government will

make the dream of buying your fi rst home real again by introduc-ing a new stamp duty deferral scheme for those entering the property market. Labor’s Help for Homes plan would allow fi rst home buyers to defer up-front stamp duty costs, instead paying stamp duty costs in aff ordable monthly instalments over fi ve years. This would allow indi-viduals and couples working hard and saving for their fi rst home to invest their money into a house deposit – not see their savings evaporate instantly on stamp duty charges. The option to defer stamp duty would be available to all fi rst home buyers purchasing property up to the value of $750,000.

Consumers are being reminded of the importance of understand-ing their contract with NSW Fair Trading Minister, Matthew Mason-Cox, this week reveal-ing complaints about buying properties off -the-plan have increased in the last year. There

has been a steady increase in the number of complaints received with 25 recorded last year, 14 lodged in 2013 and 10 received in 2012. “While the overall volume of complaints is low, these complaints can represent fi nancial losses for consumers,” Mr Mason-Cox said.

Mr Baird said the new four-year target follows the Government’s successful delivery of 10,000 new home-sites over the last four years.

“We made a commitment to deliver 10,000 new home sites four years ago, and I am pleased to say in the next two weeks we will have hit the mark,” he said.

“Sydney’s population is growing, and we are planning today for the homes families need near jobs and transport. We are speeding up the release of government-owned property to supercharge housing supply.”

All proceeds from the sales will be reinvested into urban renewal projects.

If you’re looking for a new addi-tion to the dining room be sure to choose a rug that’s big enough so that the chair legs stay on the rug even when the chair is pulled out. Keep the shape of the rug in line with the table as well, round for round, square for square etc.

For a living room make sure the two front legs of the sofa are rest-ing on the rug. Once again, select the rug according to the shape of the coff ee table.

Bar stools: In terms of the extra seating, bar stools are a great option. They don’t take a lot of room, and they can be a really attractive addition. It’s certainly worth the investment.
