Conversation #1 Nat Turner Rebellion in 1831In 1831, the slave Nat Turner was led a shocking revolt against

slavery, killing 55 whites, mostly women and children. This was the bloodiest slave rebellion in U.S. history.

Dozens of blacks were killed in retaliation

Conversation #2 Mexican American War 1846-1848in 1846, the USA engaged in a war with Mexico. Americans hoped to gain new lands as part of its “Manifest Destiny.” Texas and most

of the Mexican Cession were below the 36˚30’ line

Conversation #3 Free Soil Party formed in 1848The main goal of the Free Soil Party was to limit the spread of

slavery into the western territories. Free-soilers did not believe that the Constitution allowed for abolition of slavery

Conversation #4 Wilmot Proviso in 1846The Wilmot Proviso was a proposal to outlaw slavery in the

Mexican Cession. This would have limited the South’s ability to create new slave states in the West.

Conversation #5 Compromise of 1850 A new compromise was needed when California applied to

become a state. CA entered as a free state, but the South gained a new Fugitive Slave Law that declared that runaway slaves had

to be returned to their masters.

Conversation #6 Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852 Harriet Beecher Stowe's book had a major influence on how

Northerners viewed slavery. It showed the cruelty of slave masters and opened people’s eyes to the horrors of Southern slavery.
