  • He's been working in the trade since he was 17 years old, and now, 40 years later, he's still at it, with a customer-first approach, a trusting client base, and unbeatable experience.

His motto for running a coin and precious metal company: "It's all about taking care of people and giving them a fair price," he says.

His approach is to make sure the customer's happy and getting a good price, and he's happy to do the work for that he'll gladly make apprais-als and offers, and do home visits to help families with precious heirlooms figure out what their coin collections are worth.

With his expertise and his wide network of connections, Westerling can offer pricing that's competitive with any coin dealer in the country, big or small.

It's that expertise that has helped him gain the trust of innumerable re-peat clients, who swear by him.

Westerling learned the rare coin trade from his Uncle Truman Truman took him under his wing and got him interested in rare and unusual coins when he was still in high school. Years later, that passion remains he rel-ishes in the history behind old coins.

"If the coin could talk, what stories would it tell?" he ponders.

He's been lucky enough to see every variety of rare coin come through the shop, including "trial coins" the first imprints of new coin patterns, which

were often given to elected officials and dignitaries.

He recalls one coin that came through the shop it was an extremely rare 1921 $20 St. Gauden's gold piece. A family had brought it in hoping to get a sound appraisal, which he gave them. In fact, his quote ended up being a better offer than the family got when they sold the piece at auction, by a margin of $15,000!

Have a coin with family lore but few specifics behind it? Stop at the Tru-man Company's Roseville office, where walk-ins are more than welcome. Having grown up working in his uncle's coin shop in California, seeing peo-ple walk through the doors "reminds me of the old coin shop days," he says.

The Truman Company is a trusted source for coin dealing

For Roger Westerling, owner of the Truman Company, rare coins are a life-long passion, and a daily inspiration.

Fair president Dan Dolan says fair-goers have told him its one of the best county fairs around. Fair entertainment manager Liz Dietsche says theres some-thing for everyone, and its a chance for folks to forget about their worries and cares. Just what are they talking about?

Why, the Washington County Fair, one of the metro areas oldest and most beloved traditions. The address is 12300 N. 40th St., Lake Elmo, MN, and the dates are July 29 through August 2. See what all the excitement is for yourself, and bring your family and friends! Those familiar with the fair might

recall the many animal exhibitions and judgings the fair hosts. All the usual exhibitions and judging will take place again this year with one excep-tion: the poultry. Because of Minne-sotas recent bird flu outbreak, the county fair has decided not to feature

poultry this year. However, the birds usual friends, the rabbits, will still be

featured in the poultry barn. Get your tickets early and save when

you buy season passes at the fair-grounds. Theyll be sold July 27 and July 28 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Fair Office in Building B. Theyre $18 for adults, $6 for children ages 6-15, and free for children 5 and younger. Dont miss your chance season passes wont be sold once the fair begins. Also take your chance on getting a

great deal for carnival rides. You can purchase five rides for $10 on July 27 and July 28 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on July 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Theyll be sold at the Fair Office as well. Daily admission to the fair is $7 for

adults, $4 for children ages 6-15, and free for children 5 and younger. As always, parking is free. Gates open at 7 a.m. daily and close

at 10 p.m. Wednesday through Satur-day, and 8 p.m. on Sunday. Buildings open at 10 a.m. daily and close at 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 8 p.m. on Sunday.

    For more information, visit www.washingtoncountyfair.org.

Opening Day - Wednesday, July 29Kick off your Washington County

Fair experience with the 4-H Horse Show at 8:30 a.m. The horse show is just one of dozens of 4-H events hosted by the fair, so stay tuned. The 4-H is bigger than ever [this

year], says Dolan. Ms. Jaz-ee, balloonologist and fair

favorite, is back for more twisting bal-loon fun. Her first of many shows dur-ing the whole fair begins today at 11:30 a.m. You wont have to wait long after

lunchtime to enjoy some musical enter-tainment. The LaValle Jazz Cats jazz combo will delight your ears with some smooth tunes at 1 p.m. You can hear them again at 3 p.m. while set-tling down to an afternoon snack of fair favorites like cheese curds, stuffed baked potatoes, sweet corn from Hooley Hall, and malts from the FFA booth. New to the fair this year is Kevin

Doely, a musical ventriloquist whose featured puppets include Elvis and Johnny Cash. His first show begins today at 1:30 p.m. with many more to follow. The Swinetime Pig Races are back by

popular demand. The pigs first charge for cookies is today at 2 p.m., with more races to succeed for the next five days. Emcee Matt is guaranteed to uplift peo-ples spirits, says Dietsche. The traditional Opening Day Parade

will begin at 6 p.m. The classic line-up of old cars, old tractors, and floats will cruise the streets of the fairgrounds. Afterward, test your skills on the bal-

ance beam at the Pickup See-Saw Con-test, featured at the Grandstand at 7 p.m. Its the one Grandstand event dur-ing the entire fair that you can get in for free. End the day with more jazz at 7:30

p.m., this time with the Andy Colburn Jazz Quartet.

Family Fun Day - Thursday, July 30Test your brains and brawn with the

Paul Bunyan Show at 10 a.m. Contes-

tants race against the clock and each other to cut a log by hand, climb to the top of a pole, and chop down a pole with an axe. Advanced sales on carnival rides will

be discontinued, but from now until the end of the fair, you can buy unlimited access to all rides for only $22. Today the sale begins at noon and ends at 4 p.m. Note that this sale will be sus-pended on Saturday and resumed on Sunday. Magician Brian Richards returns to

the fair with his comedic magic show. Hell certainly bring a smile to your fair experience with his first show starting today at noon and his following shows continuing throughout the rest of the fair. Get your fair share of truck and trac-

tor pulls with Sneaky Petes Garden Tractor Pull and the Western Wisconsin

Truck Pullers. The former will start at 6:30 p.m. and the latter will take center stage at the Grandstand at 7 p.m. Ticket prices for the Western Wisconsin Truck Pullers are $5 for ages 6 and older, and $2 for ages 5 and younger. Dance and Entertainment Studios

will enthrall teenage fairgoers with a teen night event starting at 8:30 p.m.

Senior Citizens Day - Friday, July 31

Senior citizens (ages 65 and up) can get into the fair for only $2! This special admission price will be discontinued at 1 p.m. Starting today, a Transformer will

roam the fair to meet and greet fair-goers. Keep your eyes peeled though it will roam at certain times, you wont find those times posted on the fairs website.Thats the surprise in it, says

Dietsche. Today unlimited access for all carnival

rides will be sold from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Alfys World of Robotic Puppets hosts

For today only, from 11 a.m until close, those eager for a ride around the Stillwater area can head over to the stand at the north end of the fair-grounds and board the aircraft. An addi-tional fee will be charged. Feel a bit of Irish luck with the

department displays and demonstra-tions will be presented from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If youre looking for a romantic lilt

to your fair-going experience, be swept off your feet by the Autumn Serenade barbershop quartet, performing at noon. Didnt get enough Irish luck from the

OShea Dancers Friday night? Theyll tap their way back to the stage for another performance today at 3 p.m. For something more adventurous, visit

the Grandstand at 6 p.m. for the return of the ever-popular event, the Demoli-tion Derby.
