“Celebrating 100Years of 4-H In Style”
This year’s 4-H Style Show at the WashingtonCounty Fair will include members who werejudged in June at the 4-H Clothing Revue. OnWednesday evening of the fair, July 23, on theZiegler Building Stage participants will show offtheir fashions for 2014. Last year’s state fairdelegates, Bethanea Kottwitz and Emily Schulz, will narrate the show beginning at 6:00pm. Allmembers were judged in June and those receivingblue ribbons were eligible for judge’s choiceawards. Two first year clothing 4-H members willreceive the Anna Lhotka Memorial Award and anadvanced clothing member will receive the LauraWolf Memorial Award. Teen Choice Awards willalso be handed out. The Teen Choice Awards areselected by the participants. These awards are keptsecret until the fashion show announcements aremade.
4-H Clothing members construct garments forthis event, but judging is focused on the selectionof pattern, fabric, accessories and the overall lookof the garment on the individual. Of course thegarment construction must provide the right “fit” toprevent wrinkles in the wrong places and assurethat the garment is not too small or too large.
Chris Kniep judged this year’s Clothing Revueevent. 4-H volunteer leaders, Marilyn Nadelhofferand Susan Jahn, along with Carol Bralich, FamilyLiving Educator, organized the event. Seniormembers are selected to represent WashingtonCounty at the Wisconsin State Fair Clothing Revuein August. The 2014 State Fair delegates areKatrina Pedrick and Kim Reinders, both from theHi-Lite Happy Workers 4-H Club. The 2014 StateFair alternates are Anna Pedrick from the Hi-LiteHappy Workers 4-H Club and Abigail Doak fromthe Badger Boosters 4-H Club. Kim, Anna, andAbigail will be attending this learning experience.

By Marv EspenscheidWisconsin Livestock Breeders Association
Most of what I really know about how to liveand what to do and how to be, I learned by showinglivestock. Here are some of the many things that Ihave learned.
I have learned to be honest about my animal’sbloodlines, birthdates and other data. It doesn’tfeel-good inside when I lie about these things.Being truthful gives me a clear conscience.
I have learned to cooperate with those aroundme. By getting along with other exhibitors, leaders, parents and show staff, I find that my showexperiences are much more pleasant. By sharingand being considerate of others, I find people arenicer to me.
I have learned to treat my animals humanely.Sometimes, I try to put myself in their “hooves.” Iremember they need good food, clean water and acomfortable environment. I also remember that Ido not like to be hurt, so I don’t want to be roughon them, even though they might try my patience attimes.
I have learned to watch those around me to learnbetter grooming and showmanship techniques.
All I ever really neededto know I learned by
showing livestock

This will help me improve my skills in the future. Ihave learned that working with livestock is acontinual learning process.
I have learned to appreciate all that people do tohelp me along the way. A word or note of thanks isimportant. I like to be thanked when I help out aswell. I have learned that to have friends, you haveto be a friend. Working with livestock is moreenjoyable when done with friends.
I have learned to be responsible for the care ofmy own animals. If someone else does the work forme, it is really not my project at all.
I have learned that I will make some mistakesalong the way. I will accept the fact that I need tolearn from the mistakes I have made, so they don’thappen again.
I have learned that it is a good quality to havethings done on time, such as meeting projectdeadlines, being in the show-ring on time. I do notlike to wait for a late animal, and people should nothave to wait for me.
I have learned that it is important to strive towin, but I realize that is not always going tohappen. I remember to congratulate others, and Ihope they will do the same for me.
There are many things to learn and many thingsto remember as I proceed through the years ofraising and showing livestock. Everything youneed to know is in there somewhere.
