“Great Care At a Great Place”

CH544976cz.db

For more than a century one week during the summer has been reserved for the revelry and pageantry of the South-west Washington Fair.

The event represents many things for many people.

It’s a carnival. It’s a venue for top en-tertainers. It’s a place where memories are formed that last many lifetimes.

Above all, though, the Southwest Washington Fair is a showcase of all that’s wonderful about this beautiful swath of the Evergreen State.

Wander the grounds and you’re like-ly to find something to satisfy all your senses.

The midway sparkles and hums with the quintessential sounds and sights of American carnival life, the smell of el-ephant ears and other fairtime food fa-vorites always carried by a light summer breeze.

Barns burst with livestock and poul-try raised by the youth of the greater Lewis County area, the living results

of hard work and a way of life that has remained stubbornly similar to yester-years.

At the Southwest Washington Fair, you’ll find staples of Americana right alongside unique local offerings such as the annual Diaper Derby, an event that features dozens of chubby-cheeked, adorable crawlers all unknowingly work-ing to win a grand prize for their parents.

You’ll find local performers picking away at guitars or belting out popular tunes on stages tucked throughout the fairgrounds.

Children will be amazed and enter-tained by Friendlyville, an area dedicat-ed to the wonderment and smiles of the youngest attendees.

Take a look through the comprehen-sive calendar beginning on page 14.

Chart your course through a staple of living in Southwest Washington, know-ing all the while you’ll form memories through a tradition that has lasted more than a century.

DECaDENt DEStruCtioN: Derby Remains as Popular as Ever With FairgoersBy Dameon Pesanti

[email protected]

The demolition derby is a night when argonautic motorheads get behind the wheel, hit the gas and send 3,000 pounds of four-wheeled American steel roaring around a muddy track and headlong into the competition.

The engines are throaty, the crashes are loud and the flames are very real.

Many will enter but only one will drive away with the grand prize. The rest of the competition will likely be towed off with only their fenders to straighten and their pride to heal as they anticipate another year of competition.

Demolition derbies are as iconic to American fairs as funnel cake, bull rid-ing and 4-H pigs. But the cars so per-fect for the sport, the big, heavy, older U.S.-made cars, are getting harder and harder to find as manufacturers have

long switched to lighter, more compact designs.

The enthusiasts who love the sport spend weeks on end searching old junk yards and combing the classified ads for the perfect old rig at an affordable price. Although they may spend less than $900, drivers often spend more than $1,000 beefing up the engine and reinforcing the frame.

Even though smashing them is the point, car owners give their rigs extra bulk to increase their odds of rolling into the next competition.

Every car is stripped to the bare mini-mum with their doors welded shut and huge steel beams are bolted to the sides. As a finishing touch most cars are given a splashy and loud paint job.

There will be two different occasions to check out the demolition derby at the Southwest Washington Fair.

On Tuesday, Aug. 18, there’s a show starting at 7 p.m.

But, as always, the demolition derby will feature prominently on the final day of the fair. The car crunching action be-gins at noon at the grandstand on Aug. 23.

Tickets are $12 per seat in the grandstand. Box seats will sell for $15. Purchase of

a ticket to the demolition derby will also allow for fair gate admission.

Aaron Tippin, a country musician many considered to be the voice of the blue collar worker, will bring his cache of country hits to the Southwest Washing-ton Fair as this year’s headlining act.

Tippin rose to fame in 1990 with his hit single “You’ve Got to Stand for Some-thing.” The track became popular with soldiers during the Gulf War conflict and cemented Tippin’s spot in the 1990s country music scene.

Tippin’s collection of 14 albums has resonated with the American working class, including “There Ain’t Nothing Wrong With the Radio” and “That’s as Close as I’ll Get to Loving You,” among others.

Among his most famous ballads to the blue collar community was “Work-ing Man’s Ph.D.” which cemented his role in the blue collar America with lyr-ics like “From driving a nail to driving a truck, As a matter of fact I’d like to set things straight, A few more people should be pullin’ their weight, If you wanna cram course in reality, You get yourself a working man’s Ph.D.”

Tippin was born in Florida, but he was raised on a farm in South Caro-lina. He spent the 70s singing and per-forming in local bars. He later moved to Nashville where he became a writer. Lat-er he competed on a country television station’s talent contest in 1986 and land-ed a song publishing contract. He wrote several songs for David Ball, Mark Collie and Charley Pride by day and worked at an aluminum plant at night.

Tippin stands in line of a long lineage of country music singers embracing a

southern twang in his bari-tone voice. The intonation of his delivery and curl in his lip phrasing has been compared with Hank Williams.

In his personal time, Tip-pin works on his 500-acre farm and is a pilot able to fly small planes and helicopters.

He’s also a winemaker and active body-builder.

Tippin will play on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 8 p.m. on the Saloon Stage. The purchase of a Golden Circle ticket for $25 lets you sit within the first 10 to 20 rows,

if purchased before Aug. 18. Admission to the fair is included with the purchase. The purchase of a fair ticket will allow fairgoers to see the music, but only from a distance.

PoP aND roCk: '80s Rockers to Play Saloon Stage Thursday NightBy Dameon Pesanti

[email protected]

The bouncy, upbeat power pop band that carried an entire generation through the fluttery first stages of a relationship and into the slow, melodic downtime of a breakup will perform at the Southwest Washington Fair and carry us through the emotions one more time.

The Romantics, a band named in homage of the day they played their first show (Valentine’s Day) traces its roots to 1976 Detroit. The Romantics were heavily influenced by the British Invasion in their song writing and lyric structure. How-ever, the band really was inspired by the 1950s and 1960s American guitar-heavy rock-n-roll. They also borrowed from the electro synth pop scene, so popular in the late 70s and early 80s, to create their in-strumental tracks. However, some of their most famous songs fell more into a tradi-

tional pop rock sound. Perhaps most infa-mous is “What I Like About You,” which was featured on the band’s self-titled de-but album (where The Romantics were featured wearing their iconic red leather suits), has become a staple in the commer-cial world. The song has been picked up by numerous brands for advertising and

is heavily circulated on classic rock sta-tions around the nation.

Although they enjoyed a warm re-ception among American audiences, The Romantics were especially popular in Australia. For example, “What I Like About You” climbed the charts in the United States to No. 49, but topped out at

No. 2 in Australia. But their presence on the American music scene was cemented when “Talking in Your Sleep” was re-leased.

Unfortunately, just as the band was soaring high in the mid 80s, a lawsuit with their management halted their re-cording and their fame ebbed. Unable to work on new material, the band was mar-ginalized into small venues and recycling old material. But after winning the suit in the mid 90s, The Romantics re-entered the limelight when they released a hand-ful of new albums.

The band continues to perform to this day with all but one of their original members. They will play on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 8 p.m. on the Saloon Stage. The purchase of a Golden Circle ticket for $25 lets you sit within the first 10 to 20 rows, if purchased before Aug. 18. Admis-sion to the fair is included with the pur-chase. The purchase of a fair ticket will allow fairgoers to see the music, but only from a distance.

SouthErN roCkErS: Take Saloon Stage Friday NightBy Dameon Pesanti

[email protected]

These guys may be from Georgia, but don’t call them southern gentlemen. The Georgia Satellites bring with them all the twang and grittiness of Southern rock akin to the sounds of Foghat, Molly Hatchet and Black Oak Arkansas.

Most famous for “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” and “Hippy Hippy Shake,” The Georgia Satellites stood atop the apex of their fame from the late 80s in the early 90s.

An incarnation of the band formed in 1980 and became a veteran of the small, smoky music bars around the South. Btut with a 1985 reshuffling of members and one demo tape it wasn’t long before they rocketed into stardom.

The music coming out of the South-ern-fried amplifiers stood in stark con-trast to the squeaky clean Reagan-era tunes produced by Kenny Rogers and Barbra Streisand and the new wave ex-periments by Billy Joel and Blondie, and the public latched on.

“Keep Your Hands to Yourself” came out in 1986 and quickly climbed to No. 2 on the U.S. Rock Charts and the Top 100. The album it was on also went to No. 5

on the U.S. Top 200. The Georgia Satellites quickly put Atlanta on the music map and made South-ern Rock relevant again. Perhaps it was a case of too much too fast for the Ameri-can music market, but the second and third albums failed to garnish as much success as their debut, despite being criti-cally acclaimed.

The band broke up briefly in the early 90s after an amicable split when one of the members decided to pursue a solo ca-reer. However, they came back together to produce another album in 1997. Since then, at least one of the original members has kept the group together and con-tinued to tour and perform around the country.

The Georgia Satellites will play on Friday, Aug. 21, at 8 p.m. on the Saloon Stage. The purchase of a Golden Circle ticket for $25 lets you sit within the first 10 to 20 rows, if purchased before Aug. 18. Admission to the fair is included with the purchase. The purchase of a fair tick-et will allow fairgoers to see the music, but only from a distance.

Butler Amusements returns to the Southwest Washington Fair this year with diverse offerings of rides and amusements for all ages.

For $23, a fairgoer can ride all day on any of them. The unlimited ride wrist-band must be purchased at the fair office to get the reduced price. Otherwise, the cost is $28 for an all-day ticket to unlim-ited fun on the rides.

The carnival will be open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. It is operated from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sun-day, the final day of the fair.

Come out to the fair to see the full slate of possibilities, but here are a few of the hair-raising options as described by Butler Amusements.

Super Shot Drop towerThe world-class Super Shot Drop

Tower is unlike any other ride on the midway. Twelve passengers are loaded into each circular passenger station. Over-the-shoulder harnesses secure pa-trons while they are gently lifted up the 90-foot tower. Once the passenger sta-tion reaches the top, it is released in an accelerated freefall and riders experience g-force in excess of 3½ times normal. Riders are then cushioned by a magnetic braking system stopping the station be-fore it reaches the base of the tower. The Super Shot is an exciting spectacular fea-ture on the Butler midway.

giant Wheel A towering tradition of Butler

Amusements, the majestic Giant Wheel dominates the midway day and night, offering patrons a sweeping view from

a height of nearly 100 feet. Passengers are seated in separate gondolas and then whisked smoothly over the top and down again, reminiscent of the Ferris wheel. The Giant Wheel is a pleasant ride for the entire family.

ring of Fire Love of the midway is a burnin’ thing,

and in this case, it makes a fiery ring. On the Ring of Fire passengers are firmly se-

cured in their seats within a train of cars and are taken on a journey that circum-navigates the inside of a “ring of fire.” The train pauses only once at the top before cascading down the track back-wards! The Ring of Fire is a spectacular ride just for teens and adults.

raptor The Raptor has a familiar look of

the classic scrambler, but with an extra

special kick that multiplies the fun and excitement. Four arms are connected to seats in pods of three. Each pod of seats spin counterclockwise while the entire arm turns counterclockwise giving rid-ers the feeling of being in the center of a crazy vortex. The Raptor has 18 seats each holding two adults per seat.

See more about the rides online at http://southwestwashingtonfair.net.

For Many, it’s all about the Carnival rides

BY POPULAR DEMAND: Fairgoers Had a Hand in Selecting One of Fair’s Headliners for 2014By Christopher Brewer

[email protected]

Collective Soul is tabbed as one of the headliners of this year’s Southwest Washington Fair, and fairgoers can pat themselves on the back for helping them get to Chehalis.

Fair staff did something this year they haven’t done before to bring an act to its annual summer extravaganza: ask the people who they want to see. People from across Lewis County and beyond responded to a poll on the fair’s Face-book page asking who they wanted to see this year.

Choices given were Collective Soul, O.A.R., Pentatonix and the Plain White T’s. Collective Soul and Pentatonix were

the two most popular choices, but the lack of availability for the popular a cap-pella quintet cemented Collective Soul’s victory in the fan vote.

Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, the band will play the Saloon Stage Friday, Aug. 15, right in the middle of their 20th anniversary. The concert begins at 8 p.m., and tickets are available for $35. Admission to the fair for Aug. 12 is in-cluded in the price of the ticket for those that buy before that day.

Fair manager Gale Sobolesky told The Chronicle when the concerts were announced the Facebook vote was highly influential.

Collective Soul is perhaps most well-known for their string of hits in the 1990s that continue to be played on rock radio stations across America today.

Collective Soul broke into the main-stream with the highly-successful song “Shine,” which won a Billboard award for Top Rock Track in 1994. Their second-

album, which was self-titled, was a hit and be-came certified triple platinum, containing the tracks “Decem-ber,” “The World I Know” and “Gel.”

In their 20-year career as a band, Collective Soul has amassed seven No. 1 rock hits. They are expected to release their next album, “See What You Started By Continuing,” sometime in either Aug. or September, according to the website Access Atlanta.

Collective Soul is asking its fans via their Facebook page to help it plan some sightseeing around the Northwest on its way to Chehalis. Check its page out at

www.facebook.com/CollectiveSoul or Twitter at Twitter.com/CollectiveSoul and use the hashtag #CSoulPacNW.

To buy tickets for the concert, visit www.southwestwashingtonfair.net and follow the links. All tickets for the Col-lective Soul show are $35.

roDEo: Third Annual Bulls & Barrels Challenge Will Return Aug. 22By The Chronicle

Professional bull riding is returning again to the Southwest Washington Fair.

The Southwest Washington Rodeo As-sociation will host the second annual Twin Cities Bulls & Barrels Challenge on Satur-day, Aug. 22, at the fair.

Last year, 30 professional bull riders from across the country competed with 36 bulls. The grand prize was $5,000.

In addition, the top Pacific Northwest barrel racers will also compete.

The Bulls and Barrels Challenge will start at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, in front of the grandstand at the fairgrounds. Tick-ets for general seating in the grandstand are $15 and tickets for the grandstand box seats are $20. Arena seating is also avail-able for $20.

Tickets include fair admission and can be purchased at the fair office or online at

www.southwestwashingtonfair.net. Rodeo Association President Rob-

bie Acevedo said last year that the rodeo features top-notch cowboys and cowgirls from the professional circuits as well as lo-cally around Lewis County.

“We are trying to draw the outside community for this to show what this community is all about,” Acevedo said in 2014.

The return of bull-riding over the past three years has been a welcome develop-ment for many longtime fair-goers.

The Lewis County Roundup Rodeo lost funding in 2007 and stopped putting on rodeos.

“This area has been needing some-thing like this. What we want to do is bring events like this to the community,” Acev-edo said. “We want to bring outside people into this county to help the economy and have a family atmosphere event.”

The rodeo this year will also have mut-ton busting, where young riders compete with sheep rather than bulls. Children will also get to compete on miniature bulls.

“We want to showcase the younger kids that do the sport and show people

how talented they will be when they grow up,” Acevedo said at last year’s event.

Babies race at annual Diaper Derby thursdayBy The Chronicle

It is probably the biggest race of their young lives, whether they know it or not.

Not unlike the summer Olympics, the KMNT Diaper Derby brings all the effort, tears and cheers of any great competition.

Dozens of onlookers cheer and the music roars while more than 30 babies go elbow to elbow on the white carpet.

The rules are simple — no babies over 14 months can race, only crawl-ing is allowed, and no bottles or food can be used to lure the babies across the line.

Every team has a strategy to coax its diapered dragster. Some jingle keys, others flash binkies, and a few wave with giant smiles.

Last year, none were as effective as that of mom Kasi Walch.

She knew her son, 12-month-old Gavin, was wild about his food baggie, but since no edibles were allowed, she filled it with a rock and held it high.

Young Gavin won it all last year. This year’s Diaper Derby is any-

one’s race. It begins noon Thursday, Aug. 20,

on Stage South. Don’t miss it.
