Opening Day — Wednesday, Aug. 1

Most fairgoers can’t wait to storm the Washington County Fairgrounds on Opening Day, and for good reason.

Back by popular demand, top “balloonologist” Ms. Jaz-ee will return to clown around and share smiles with kids of all ages. Find out how a balloon can be transformed into almost anything— some of Ms. Jaz-ee’s most requested creations are a monkey in a banana tree, mouse on an airplane, wacky hats and special balloon flower bouquets. Visit Ms. Jaz-ee from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 4 to 6 p.m. daily.

Young’uns will also enjoy “Mary Hall’s Show for Pipsqueaks” — new to the fair this year. This upbeat musical program is designed especially for little ones and their families. Join entertainer Mary Hall at 1:30 and again at 2:30 p.m.

Fairgoers of all ages should make sure to swing by the Washington County K9 Show, back again this year, to see these intelligent animals show off their almost unbelievable obedience skills. The dogs will be ready for action at 3 and 5 p.m. daily.

Hoping to burn off some of those fair food calories? Drop in for some dance lessons with the Tropical Ballroom Swing Dancers from Woodbury. The group will be at the fair at 4 p.m. on opening day to show off some moves.

Family Fun Day — Thursday, Aug. 2

Day two of the fair will be jam-packed with plenty of family-

friendly activities. Stop by the Lumberjack Show at

1, 4 and 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 1 and 4 p.m. Sunday, and see why everyone loves the world of “timber sports.”

Don’t miss the award-winning Schiffelly Puppet Show at 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. These puppet characters put a comedic spin on classic fairy tails to entertain audience members of all ages.

On Family Fun Day, even teens will find an event for which they’re not “too cool.” Parents can drop their teens off at 8:30 p.m. at Music in Motion — the perfect place for teens to hang out, dance and win some awesome prizes.

And Friday night, head to the demo area for this year’s professional bull riding show, put on by Rice Bull Riding. This year’s show will be better than ever, with top-notch bulls and riders and some extra fun — barrel racing, cowboy poker and entertainment between the action. This year’s announcer, Brandon McLagan, is renown throughout the bull riding community, and the sound system will be second to none. Admission is $10 for ages 16 and up, $5 for ages 6 to 15 and free for kids under age 5.

Senior Citizens’ Day — Friday, Aug. 3

Seniors age 65 and older will enjoy free admission to the fair Friday until 1 p.m., and will be recognized at the Senior Citizens Program at 1 p.m. The program will include the annual Seniors Awards and old-fashioned bingo.

And seniors aren’t the only ones who are sure to have some fun on Day Three of the fair. The grandkids will enjoy visiting with fun-filled, life-sized puppets through Alfy’s World of Robotic

"Don’t miss" events at the fair

Saying “I do” can be expensive and stressful, whether your wedding guest list is long or short.

But how can you keep the cost of your ceremony down -- next to nothing at all -- while still ensuring there’s a beautiful backdrop and plenty of space for your family, friends and others to watch? It’s simple: get married at the Washington County Fair.

This year, Tenth District Judge Greg Galler will be performing the ceremonies at the fair, for free.

And officials note the backdrop for the ceremonies will be picture perfect, without the corn dog and

mini doughnut stands you might expect at the county fair. The ceremonies will be performed overlooking the Washington County Master Gardeners’ lush “Fairest Garden.”

And if you’re already hitched but enthralled with the idea of a “fair ceremony,” you’re in luck. Galler will also be performing vow renewal ceremonies for couples who want to say “I do” all over again.

Though the ceremonies and garden setting are free, those participating in or observing the

These fair wedding ceremonies will be performed on a hill overlooking the many flowerbeds within the Washington County Master Gardeners’ lush “Fairest Garden.”

ceremony are required to pay general gate admission.

‘What can we do for folks?’

Galler said he and his wife have a tradition of going to the fair every summer, and he has enjoyed talking to Washington County Fair visitors when he’s manned a judicial information booth in previous years.

But this year, Galler said he wanted to do something special for fairgoers by offering them a unique and affordable opportunity.

“Most of the time, we (judges) meet with people in unpleasant circumstances,” Galler said with a laugh. “Folks think of us as stodgy, old, mean guys, so I thought, ‘what can we do for some folks?’”

And since weddings often carry a hefty price tag, Galler said he wanted to offer the ceremonies for free, so that even couples who are struggling financially have the chance to say “I do.”

Galler contacted Fair Board Director Margot Rheinberger last year to see if she’d be interested in the idea of hosting the ceremonies at the fair.

“It took me literally one second to say yes,” Rheinberger recalled. “You’re always looking to enhance the county fair.”

She presented the idea to the Washington County Fair Board earlier this year, and the members agreed the ceremonies would be a unique addition.

“We are the only county in the United States to offer fair-sponsored free weddings and vow renewals every day of our fair to every qualified person without any pre-registration or contest involved,” adds Margot’s brother John Rheinberger, a fellow fair board director.

Expecting a big turnoutGaller will be performing the

ceremonies on a first-come, first-served basis during a two-hour time frame at the fair each day from Aug. 1 - 5 at the fairgrounds, located on the eastern border of Lake Elmo. Galler estimates each wedding ceremony will last between three and five minutes.

Couples must have a valid Minnesota marriage license, and those interested in getting hitched at the fair should keep in mind there’s a five-day waiting period before the license can be picked up or mailed after a couple applies. So a bit of preplanning will be necessary for couples looking to tie the knot.

Margot Rheinberger said despite the laidback setting, she expects some brides and grooms will still show up in traditional gowns, tuxedos and full wedding party attire.

Word about the ceremonies is spreading rapidly, she noted, adding that many couples might opt for a spur-of-the-moment vow renewal ceremony as well.

“People at the fair are in a real kind of fun mood,” she said. “(The ceremonies) will be kind of a novelty in the relaxed atmosphere.”

Galler said if the ceremonies are a hit this year at the fair, he would be happy to continue offering them each year from then on. He added that if couples are still lined up even

after the two-hour mark, he intends stay longer to ensure they’re not turned away.

And afterwards, the wedding parties can dine on corn on the cob at the 4-Hers Hooley Hall, or walk over to the midway for a ride on the Ferris wheel or enjoy the fair’s signature malts at the Dairy Association booth. The possibilities are almost endless.

The picturesque backdrop

The Fairest Garden is cared for by University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener volunteers through a partnership with the Washington County Agricultural Society, and has several sections that highlight specific themes.

The original 50 by 90-foot Fairest Garden plot is located in the east-central section of the fairgrounds and has demonstration areas for native plants, perennials, roses, ornamental grasses, a Monarch butterfly garden and much more, notes University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener Mary Green.

The ceremonies will be held on a hill overlooking the many beautiful gardens within the Fairest Garden, and Bergmann’s Greenhouse and Farm Market in Stillwater has volunteered to do the landscaping and decorating of the area where the ceremonies will be held.

Margot Rheinberger notes that couples who’d like to “check out the venue” can visit the Fairest Garden once it’s up and running even before the fair starts.

“It’s going to be gorgeous,” Green predicted.
