Colts, fillies, mares, stayers, sprinters and 2yos have saluted at the top level after having been conditioned under Chris’s watchful eye with Preferment and Brazen Beau’s Group 1 performances on Derby Day taking the stable’s tally to a whopping seven at this level already this season and 40 in total for Chris as a trainer. The team also hit fever pitch with the super tough Kiwi stayer Who Shot Thebarman producing a brilliant mile- stone, finishing a stable-best third in the Melbourne Cup for the O’Leary family. We were reminded of just how remarkable this success is on Sunday with Chris making an appearance alongside Damien Oliver on TVN’s Racing Review and reminiscing back to 1995 as a strapper, having to walk his horse back at the stalls at Trentham and not getting to see the Wellington Cup apart from getting a big buzz out of seeing ‘THE Damien Oliver’ on the winning horse ‘Ed’ gallop past after the post. PREFERMENT FULFILS DERBY DREAM

Breeding: Zabeel – Better Alternative by Flying Spur Purchase Price: NZ$190,000 Karaka Premier Sale, Cambridge Stud Preferment’s $1.5 million Group 1 Victoria Derby victory secured the stable’s first win in the time-honoured race and again highlighted the remarkable legacy at stud of Sir Patrick Hogan’s Cambridge Stud sires Sir Tristram and Zabeel. Having shown plenty of promise yet not breaking through for that elusive win, Preferment went into the 2500m showpiece of the first day of Flemington’s carnival a maiden. With his staying capabilities unquestioned, Damien Oliver’s experience and the help of winkers to keep him that bit more focused yet not tempting him to over-race, he relished galloping on the big, open Flemington track. It was a dominant win despite being stuck three and four wide throughout the race. With sons of Zabeel at stud few and far between and with the breed-shaping sire retiring from official duties in the serving barn last year, the question on everyone’s minds now is – could Preferment’s timely emergence see him the heir apparent to a new dynasty of stayers?

Co-breeder Mike Moran was on hand for the win having also co-bred the mighty So You Think, he commented on Preferment “As a foal and even as a yearling he was a very leggy, scopey athletic type but he had loads of quality. His mother Better Alternative always leaves beautiful types as is evident by her first 3 foals selling for a grand total of $850k (including Preferment’s older ¾ brother and stable-mate Loopole). She now has a first crop So You Think yearling colt and a Rip Van Winkle colt foal born in October.”

Preferment is now spelling as we look towards more Derby success in the autumn with him.

GO BEAU! Group 1 mission accomplished

Breeding: I Am Invincible – Sansadee by Snaadee Purchase Price: $70,000 Murrulla Stud, Inglis Classic Sale

Brazen Beau’s Group 1 Coolmore Stakes (1200m) quinella saw the stable continue to perfect the art of winning what is emerging as a real sire-making event following up Zoustar’s win last year. Formerly the Ascot Vale, the race was elevated to Group 1 level in 2006 when won by Gold Edition and since then has been won by the likes of Northern Meteor, Star Witness and Sepoy while further back champion sire Encosta de Lago holds his place on the honour roll.

The Group 1 victory was Brazen Beau’s fourth win in what was his eighth start. World class jockey Joao Moirera again paid tribute to the classy colt’s fool-proof attitude and impressive turn of foot. Not only was the win a massive coup for the stable, it was a career highlight for Grant Morgan, owner of Ontrack Thoroughbreds who commented on his attraction to the colt at the sales “We went looking for a 2yo type and the I Am Invincible’s really impressed me at the sale. I specifically wanted to look at him as I have known his breeder Bernie Howlett for many years and was very familiar with his mum Sansadee who was handy. Things lined up perfectly as I loved him as a type and he was lot 3 in the sale. He had beautiful balance, was strong everywhere and looked tough. He had a great attitude at the sales, at times cheeky and with a bit of spark but all in a playful way.

“This sort of success is the best form of advertising for a business like ours. We’ve had plenty of handy horses over the years but a Group 1 win is the pinnacle. When you only buy 3 or 4 yearlings a year it makes it hard to compete with the bigger players. But we have always punched above our weight as far as the stakes class horses we have found from limited opportunities.”

Stud deals are filtering in for the exciting colt who is now spelling ahead of an autumn campaign and possible Royal Ascot trip.

KERMADEC 3YO C Teofilo – Hy Fuju by Fuji Kiseki Flemington, Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes, 1600m, 0.2L.

Another very talented colt who’s star is sure to rise next preparation, Kermadec took the step up to stakes class with consummate ease at Flemington on Saturday. Managing to jump a lot sharper this start, he settled well in the run and was presented for his run at the right time by Blake Shinn. He’s a smart colt with a bright future and right now, he’s spelling with a big autumn ahead.

Strawberry boy 6YO G Redoute’s Choice – Strawberry Girl by Strawberry Road. Hawkesbury, Listed Ladies Day Cup, 1400m, 0.8L.

John Singleton’s prized galloper Strawberry Boy returned to the winner’s circle in what was his carefully planned first up run for the stable. Hawkesbury race-goers who backed the imposing son of Redoute’s Choice were rewarded two-fold with Singo shouting the public bar after the win. Working his way into form, sable-mate Heart Testa ran on well for third. Strawberry Boy will now head to the Festival Stakes over 1500m on the 29th of November.

GRAND MARSHAL 5YO G Dansili – Margarula by Doyoun Flemington, Visit Victoria Plate, 2800m, 0.1L.

A private purchase by the stable from the UK last year, Grand Marshal is moving up the ranks at a rate of knots. On Tuesday at Flemington he knuckled down in a gritty performance for his fourth Australian win. At this stage he’s done a super job this preparation and we will see how he comes through the run before we decide if we push on or spell now.

Holy delusions 5YO M Holy Roman Emperor – Popular Delusions by Saint Ballado Rosehill, BM80 Fillies and Mares, 1200m, 0.1L.

Neil Werret’s super tough mare Holy Delusions pleased the team with a smart resuming win at Rosehill on Saturday. She got the split up the fence to run on very well in the hands of Glyn Schofield. The sassy daughter of Holy Roman Emperor will next likely start on the 15th at Rosehill.

Thanks to Bradley Photographers www.bradleyphotos.com.au Darryl Sherer & Bruno Canatelli for our race day photographs.

GETTING TO KNOW CORY JONES

A born and bred Victorian Cory started working for Quinton Scott in 2007 and then travelled to Europe and worked for Andrew Balding for 6 months in 2009. On his return, he rode track-work free-lance for a while and obtained his picnic race-riding license. A 2.5 year stint working for Mick Price then led him to the Waller team as a track-work rider in June this year.

Cory takes a keen interest in ensuring the horses are in the best shape possible and in addition to riding, is handy with ultra-sound for treating any aches and pains while he earned a thank-you phone call this week from none other than Glen Boss for the great work he’s put into Who Shot Thebarman (pictured right together) as his regular rider since he arrived in Melbourne.

Nickname? Rhino. Best quote? "It is what it is".

Favourite part of the job? Seeing horses win that you have an opinion of.

Favourite Horse? Black Caviar.

Best horse ever seen? Typhoon Tracey.

Role model? I’ll go with Mick Price.

Favourite food? Peking duck pancakes.

Favourite jockey? Glen Boss.

If you weren’t in racing, what would you have done? I may have gone down the acting career path.

If you could invite two people for dinner, who would you invite? Sacha Baron Cohen and DJ Havana Brown.

Event in the world that you would most like to attend? Tomorrow Land, Belgium.

What would you do with your last $5? I would definitely punt my last fiver.

Tip for the weekend? Bull Point.

ONE FROM THE ARCHIVES! Melbourne-based photographer and journo Darryl Sherer, who has been invaluable in supplying the stable with trackwork and race-day photos of our team, dug a beauty out of his archives last week.

Pictured right is a photo of the mare Prophecy. She wore the same colours of Khalid Abdulla’s Juddmonte Farm as her son Foreteller and the stable’s new acquisition Eye Contact who is her grand-son.

Like our triple Group 1 winning import Foreteller, Prophecy was well-named, being by Warning.

GROUP 1 GUY ALWAYS UP FOR THE BIG JOBS It’s been well-documented the success we’ve had over recent months thanks to bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster and if there was a premiership for bloodstock agent of the year, he’d be leading at the moment. We also have a bit of a running joke going re his work ethic.. Hardly sighted for a decent chunk of the year, come carnival time Group 1 Guy emerges and this time Haylie’s inbox was inundated with picture postcards from Chris and Liam of the great man enjoying his week in Melbourne…

Frame this - Guy is doing some work! Vacuuming the CWR office at the Flemington stables.

Tired now… Time for a nap. Big day ahead, sneaking in a sleep in the car on the way to the Melbourne Cup!
