20 june, 2014 The team has continued to fire over the past week with a super six wins recorded, taking this season’s tally nationwide to 200.5 Waller-trained horses first past the post. Once again, our home-track of Rosehill provided the bulk of our Saturday winners while Sacred Flyer continued the great results coming out of our Melbourne stable, winning the stayer’s feature at Flemington. Also on Saturday, Loophole broke through at Newcastle just ahead of stable-mate Plenty Special and rounding them off, exciting youngster Wine Tales provided a very special victory for the Ingham Family, being their first home-bred winner under their Ingham Racing banner since selling Woodlands to Darley. This weekend we see our last Group 1 runners (Red Tracer, Catkins and She’s Clean) for the season step out as we look to record back to back Tatt’s Tiaras at Eagle Farm thanks to Red Tracer’s rewarding victory last year for the stable and Geoff and Mary Grimish. We also have some strong chances at Randwick and Moonee Valley and wish our owners the best of luck with their horses. CHRIS WALLER RACING – WINNERS THIS WEEK

Sacred flyer

7YO G High Chapparal – No Fibs (Casual Lies)

Flemington, 2014 Banjo Patterson Series (2500m) 0.5L.

Sacred Flyer and Chris Symons combined for another Raffles Racing victory with the stable, this time in the $100,000 staying feature at Flemington on Saturday.

Now the winner of seven races, Sacred Flyer will now race in the fourth race of the Banjo Patterson Series next Saturday at Flemington.

Sniper fire

2YO G High Chaparral – Strategic Answer (Strategic)

Rosehill, Freshworld 2yo Plate (1500m) 0.5L.

Continuing on his winning streak, Sniper Fire rounded off a fantastic first race preparation with his third win and second at Saturday level. Tough and hardy, he should continue to improve and we look forward to his spring and autumn preparations next season where he could well be suited in the prestigious Guineas type races.

He is now back lapping up the warmth in Queensland, spelling for six weeks before he eases back into work for a spring preparation.

amovatio 3YO G Al Maher – Grand Ovation (Scenic)

Rosehill, Eric Kime BM75 (1200m) 0.5L.

Continuing his hot streak, Amovatio was impressive to push through and make it two from two this preparation, making up for some luckless runs last time in.

More suited over further he carried a big weight that was reduced with apprentice rider Serg Lisnyy on board. Together they pushed through for a nail-biting but in the end decisive win. Having pulled up well from the run but with no ideal races jumping out at us for his next start, his next target is yet to be confirmed.

Sense and reason

3YO F Exceed and Excel – Donna Intelligente (Dehere)

Rosehill, Androssan Batlow Apples BM84 (1400m) 0.1L.

Running in Boban’s brilliant purple colours, Sense and Reason continued on her winning way recording her third win in a row. All three wins were in the hands of gun young kiwi hoop, Jason Collett who earned praise from Chris for not just this ride, but his skills in general being quoted during the week in the media saying “He’s a serious rider who continues to mature, in five years he will be in the top three riders in Sydney and if it doesn’t happen I will be surprised.”

Now with four wins to her name, Sense and Reason is building a formidable race record and having pulled up well, she will continue on this preparation with a next assignment yet to be decided.

loophole

4YO G Lonhro – Better Alternative (Soviet Star)

Newcastle, Schweppes BM90 (1400m) 0.5L.

Loophole downed stable-mate Plenty Special on the line at Newcastle on Saturday to record his second career win while his promising younger brother by Zabeel, named Preferment, is set to make his debut from the Melbourne stable in the next week or so.

Thanks to the confidence building run at the provincials, Loophole will now be targeted at a city race at Canterbury on the 25th of June.

Wine tales 2YO F Tale of the Cat – Vinavion (Flying Spur)

Warwick Farm, Ibis Milano Restaurant Maiden (1100m) 0.8L.

Wine Tales was the toast of the stables yesterday being the first home-bred winner for the Ingham family’s Ingham Racing. Most exciting was the way that this filly won – she was a long way back in the field and absolutely flew home to dead heat on the line. Vinavion herself didn’t show much on the track however if her first foal, Wine Tales, is anything to go by, she’s found her calling in the broodmare paddock. Following up behind Wine Tales is a Choisir yearling filly, a High Chaparral weanling colt and is currently in foal to Pierro.

GETTING TO KNOW Jessica Mitchell

A familiar face on race day in her role helping saddle up, CWR trackwork rider Jess Mitchell’s dad was a jockey and did his apprenticeship at Rosehill with Jack Denham. Growing up in Manly with three older brothers who surfed, Jess had her first riding lesson at age 10 and was given her first pony at 11 and went on to represent Australia in eventing at the Young Rider Trans Tasman in NZ with her horse AEC Storman. After making eventing and coaching her career for five years, Jess opted for a change of pace, to a faster pace, and ventured into the racing game.

Nickname? I've had a couple over the years but the one which has followed me the most is J-Crash.

Best quote? You only live once, but if you live it right once is enough.

Favourite part of the job? My favourite part of my job would be riding and working with such lovely horses, getting to see them turn into racehorses and watching them win races. It's very rewarding for us and owners.

Favourite horse? One horse really stole my heart when she arrived and I've ridden some amazing horses but I have to say Arinosa without fail!

Best horse ever seen? In my lifetime I don't think I will ever see a horse achieve what Black Caviar did. Best horse which I think didn't get to reach his potential was Reliable Man.

Role model? Pink because she is strong and stands up for what she believes in. Her songs have so much meaning and I can really relate to them.

Favourite food? It has to be Italian and Thai. But my boyfriend Blake Ryan is an amazing cook and makes most things taste good.

Favourite jockey? Would have been my dad Stephen Mitchell but I never got to see him ride. So I will say you can't go past Jimmy Cassidy and someone who didn't quite reach his top Nathan Berry.

If you weren’t in racing? I think I would still be eventing with my horses. Horses are my world and I couldn't imagine life without them.

Two people you would invite for dinner? I think they would be Susie O'Neill and Barack Obama because they inspire me.

Event you would most like to attend in the world? Would have to be Badminton three day event in England. It's an amazing display of horse and rider at their best.

If you had only $5 left? I would try to back a winner but I don't really bet... Otherwise I would buy some chocolate.

Tip for the weekend? One of my stable favourites the mighty midget Red Tracer in the Tatt’s Tiara in Brisbane.

RECENTLY NAMED HORSES Names for yearlings and some of our later two year olds continue to filter through to the stable. Amongst some recently named horses is the Thorn Park x Alberton Princess colt, cleverly named by Jack Lake and Ken Warriner who went back to his second dam – Straussbridge – to come up with Bascule. That name is from a German born – US citizen – and engineer, Joseph Strauss who was a bridge builder. He was the chief engineer who oversaw the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Strauss championed the Bascule bridge design – basically this design opens up the centre spans to let ships through. The word Bascule is also used to describe the arc of a horse jumping over a fence hence its application to Strauss’s bridge design.

keeping it in the family - kisma

After recognising the great contribution Myrrh has made to Chris Waller Racing last week being the dam of Triple Honour, Disciple and Enormous Honour, Kisma was an obvious subject for this week. Owned by Geoff and Mary Grimish, she resides at Kitchwin Hills and has provided the stable with two Group 1 winners in Shellscrape and Red Tracer. Red Tracer lines up tomorrow in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara vying to make it back to back wins in the race and her third Group 1 after coming out on top after a thrilling dual with stable mate Catkins in the Myer in the spring.

Similar to Myrrh, Kisma didn’t amass a long list of achievements on the track. A speedy mare however, she recorded three wins over 900m – 1000m and won just over $20,000 in prize-money.

By Snippets, her pedigree boasts some fantastic sires, import Lunchtime and on her dam-side mighty Vain, both of whom stood at Widden Stud. Lunchtime contributed to more headlines this week as the appears in the pedigree of Choisir and of course his son Starspangledbanner who’s juvenile colt The Wow Signal and filly Anthem Alexander both securing stakes wins at Royal Ascot.

Charged with the mission to hopefully follow in the footsteps of Shellscrape and Red Tracer, the stable is very excited about the prospects of their two three quarter siblings, Duty First (two year old) and Counterattack (now a yearling) as they work their way through the system. Both cracking types by Redoute’s Choice, Duty First (below left) has shown plenty of promise in his first two runs while Counterattack (below right as a foal) is completing his early education and is due for a visit to Rosehill in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately Kisma hasn’t had the best of luck in the breeding barn recently with Counterattack her last foal having missed to Sepoy and Dane Shadow before slipping a foal to Exceed and Excel this year.

horse of the week hINCHINBROOK – SKYESCENT COLT

Yarraman Park are renown for their ability to spot a top young sire and Hinchinbrook could well pick up where fellow Yarraman resident I Am Invincible leaves off this season, being the leading first season sire in Australia and if this colt’s anything to go by, it’s highly likely. He’s a half to Group 1 winner Rubiscent and to date has impressed everyone who has worked with him.

Chris’s comments “He caught my eye as a nice, strong and free moving colt at the sales. I really enjoyed working with him while he was in for his first look around Rosehill. He did some three quarter pace work and also some barrier work. The rider’s comments echoed the breakers – strong with a great attitude. He has started pre-training and I expect him to be back in the stables around the 2nd of July.”

You can race him for just $22,500 (inc GST) per 10% share. For more information call 02 9760 5710 or visit www.starthoroughbreds.com.au

STABLE cracks the double ton Chris Waller wanted to train 1000 winners when he took out his trainers licence, but it is a figure he left behind him last season and he added another five at Rosehill, Flemington and Newcastle on Saturday. His main focus was, as ever, at home at Rosehill where Sniper Fire, Amovatio and Sense And Reason gave him yet another treble, while Loophole won at Newcastle and Sacred Flyer brought up the 200 for the season at Flemington.

“It is actually just a number, but a very big one,” Waller said. “You have to be proud about it. When I began training I thought 1000 winners would be something to aim for and thought if I can get 30 or 40 winners a year, I might get there. In the last four years we have been at the same amount of horses in work but we have been getting better. It is something I’m very proud of.

“It was good to have another treble because our focus is always Saturday metropolitan winners and I think there a couple of horses that can kick on.”

CAESAR’S PRINCESS TO NEWGATE FARM

Whether it be finding an easier racing environment, a home as a sport horse or as a broodmare, part of our job here at Chris Waller Racing is ensuring our horses are managed through to the next phase of their careers after they’ve reached their potential with us.

This week we saw Caesar’s Princess sold by the stable to a client of Newgate Farm where she will visit their newly acquired son of Northern Meteor in Eurozone. Entering the stable in 2010, she won five and placed on nine occasions for her syndicate of owners and we look forward to following her progress in the next phase of her life.
