Last week was Education Week. The theme was ‘Learning Together’ which is very appropriate knowing the path that learning has taken during this school year so far. Whilst we were not able to invite parents and other family members into the school to celebrate learning at CEPS with us last week as we normally would, we can instead acknowledge and celebrate how our school community has worked together this year to ensure that the learning of our students is supported. We have built a stronger learning partnership due to COVID-19 and are certainly ‘Inspiring Excellence Together’. We have achieved this through the mutual respect, understanding, support, patience and care that everyone has shown each other. Thank you everyone. Visible Learning We are in the first year of our professional learning about Visible Learning. Last week a short survey was sent home to gain some insight from our parents about the qualities of a learner. Please return this survey to your child’s class teacher by Friday. We have already gathered some data from the students and the staff and will combine this all together to develop a list of the key learning dispositions of a learner at CEPS. Gaining a shared understanding of what a visible learner is and the qualities that need to be observed is the foundation for the implementation of Visible Learning across the school. Parent Teacher Interviews All teachers have been spending time making phone calls to all parents as a way of connecting about the first semester’s learning. We hope that these conversations have been valuable and have provided insight into where your child is at with their learning and what are their next steps. Attendance We understand that there is some uncertainty in the community at the moment, but it is important that students are at school so that they receive the benefits of face to face instruction from their teacher. We continue to monitor attendance as we always have and continue to expect that students are at school every day unless they are unwell or have leave approved by the principal. Please remember to provide advice to the school by phone, letter or skoolbag if your child is absent. If you need to collect your child/ren early for an appointment please ensure that you arrive in sufficient time for us to collect your child/ren from their classroom and bring them to you at the Kiss and Ride gate. Where possible please give advance notice to the office. See skoolbag notice for more information. WEDNESDAY 12 AUGUST, 2020

COVID-19 Response Plan Attached to the bulletin today is a brief overview of the plan that the school will follow should there be a confirmed case of COVID-19 reported in our school community. Please make yourself familiar with this information, particularly in the instance that we are required to remove all the students from the school during the school day. The plan references our school evacuation procedures. These are also attached for your information should you be on site when a drill or an actual event occurs. Skoolbag is the quickest and easiest way to get information to our school community so please ensure that this is installed on your device with the notifications ‘on’. Kindergarten Orientation It is that time of year again when we start planning to meet our new little friends for kindergarten next year. We are currently discussing options for our Kindergarten Orientation Program in case we are not able to run it in the usual way. Rest assured that we will be doing the best that we can to ensure that the children and their families have sufficient information for a happy and supported start to school. If you have a child who will be starting school next year, please make sure that you have provided the office with your contact details, including phone and email for when we start to distribute information. This will also enable us to start organising our staffing for next year. We will be allowing new families to have a school tour. These tours will only include outdoor spaces and will involve one family at a time with social distancing ensured between staff and families. Readathon Our P&C continue to be very active and supportive during these times and have organised a Readathon to start this Friday. Any money collected from the Cross Country sponsorship can be transferred over to this event. When we have a little more time at home than we usually do, what a wonderful way to pass the time – read a book! We are encouraging electronic payments to avoid money handling by our staff or the volunteers. The P&C have done a wonderful job at adapting their operations to be COVID safe. Have a great week everyone. Keep smiling and stay safe.

Michelle Unterrheiner Principal

Tree of Values Over the past few weeks we have focused on the value of cooperation. The positive behaviours we have explored are taking turns and listening to other people’s ideas, which are not always easy to do. I encourage you to play board games with your children at home and reinforce the concept of taking turns helps to build cooperative relationships. Another discussion point is listening to the ideas of others. For example, someone might have a different way to complete a task or suggest a different story to read before bed. Thank you, Michelle Bell & Libby Bailey Values Coordinators

Unfortunately face to face P & C meetings are still on hold at this stage for everyone’s safety. The P&C is still busy behind the scenes though!

We are excited to announce that we raised $585.76 for the Thompson Pie Drive, and $1387.50 for the wine fundraiser! Well done to our fundraising team, and thank you to everyone that contributed.

To keep updated with school information download the Skoolbag app. Any information sent through the app is delivered by the school, which includes information on behalf of the P&C.

Don’t forget about our ongoing fundraisers:

1. Newcastle Permanent Building Society Introducer Program - For every eligible new home or business loan (over $100 000), Newcastle Permanent will give Charlestown East $600. During the loan application process, you just need to mention our school name.

2. Athletes Foot School Rewards Program - When buying new school shoes, or joggers don’t forget to visit the Athletes Foot. For every pair of shoes purchased our school receives $5.00 when you mention CEPS.

3. Rebel Sport - Ask them to link your membership to CEPS and with each purchase a % goes back to CEPS to spend on anything that Rebel stock. Thank you for all of your continued support Emily Baker Vice President P&C

Our uniform shop is open for online purchases only through our online portal https://charlestown-east-pc.square.site/ Orders will be filled Tuesday and Thursday afternoons then delivered to your child's classroom.

We have just received an order of skorts for those that have been waiting. Please be aware that due to COVID19 we are experiencing some delays and out of stock issues. We are doing our best to keep stock levels up.

Remember we now stock beeswax wraps in our shop. These wraps are a great way to help the environment and are a great addition to our reusable insulated lunch bags. You will find prices and sizes in our online shop.

Our garden is at the centre of the schools sustainability focus again, with active class participation and harvesting for the canteen.

5/6L has taken residence in the greenhouse with new seedlings of squash, carrot, peas and nasturtiums planted in recent weeks. They will watch as the seedlings germinate and thrive (we hope!) into larger plants ready to be harvested or replanted.

Page 12: Visible Learning - charlestoe-p.schools.nsw.gov.au

A great range of greens from the garden were the hero ingredients in a recent fresh food Tuesday at the canteen. Our vegetables and herbs featured in a delicious pasta Bolognese which walked out the door and into plenty of young tummies! We will continue to work with Canteen Coordinator Leila Finch to use our fresh produce, with a garden to plate distance of less than 100 metres.

Maree Turner Garden Committee

Term 3 has certainly been busy it has been wonderful having some volunteers back on deck, and being able to have counter sales again.

Last week we had our first Fresh Food Tuesday. We made a yummy CEPS bolognaise gf pasta, which was full of amazing fresh produce from wonderful school garden. Thank you to all the children that purchased one of our pastas, we have had some great reviews from the students. We are extremely lucky to have such an amazing garden that we can use on these days, thank you to Mrs Turner and the garden committee. These fresh food days will be on the first Tuesday of each month, and information will be on the Skoolbag app.

We are extremely busy with lots of orders could you please make sure your children have their lunch orders in on time and have their names and class marked clearly on the order.

Stay tuned for our next meal deal coming soon.
