With the BJP winning ahandsome and impressivemajority on its own, is aremarkable paradigm shift in theParliamentary history whichdefied several preconceivednotions against BJP’s PrimeMinisterial candidate NarendraModi. BJP and its allies garnered23% votes, Congress got 23%,the four regional parties likeAIADMK, SP, BSP andTrinamoolCongress got above14% votestogether, Left got above 5%. InTamilnadu, the ruling AIADMKgot vote share of 43.3%, DMK23.6%, Congress 4.3%, others27.3% which is unprecedented inhistory. The selection ofcandidates puts firmly a brake onthe family dynasty system andcaste politics which can producesuccessive generation of capableleaders. The BJP has allowedgrassroot leaders to come upthrough the rank and file andoccupy top party posts. It needsto be credited for managing atricky power shift within the partywith several stalwarts like L.K.Advani and MurliManohar Joshito be sidelined and yield spaceas dictated by the party. Thevoter turnout of 66.38% has thehighest ever in India’s post-independence electoral history, meeting a record of 1984 when64.01% of Indians voted afterIndira Gandhi’s assassination. This election mocked the entryof 100 million new voters, youngIndians, impatient for change andextremely aspirational.

The nine phase long electionfrom April7th to May 12th was thesecond largest in India’s historyafter 1951-52, held for 5 monthsstretching out mammothmanagement exercises likeshifting of security personnel forpoll bandobast after takingcognizance of local festivals andpublic holidays. The electioncommission has done acommendable and remarkableexercise which is laudable forsmooth running of electionswithout any major disturbance inany area. The electorates too set

16th LokSabha elections - 2014

- The glimpses of mandatea new record, over 81.4% votersalmost 10 crore more than in 2009entitled to exercise the ballot. Theexpense in conducting theelections barring securityarrangements touched alone 3500crore. Apart from the politicalparties would have spent 35000crore which is thrice the amountspent in 2009 and the secondhighest to 7 billion dollars spenton the US president’s election in2012. Whistles stop tours bycampaigners of major politicalparties by helicopters and jets, elaborate Ad campaigns and rallyorganizations were reallybewitching.

NOTA : None of theAbove(NOTA), or negative voting, anoptional feature made its debutin LokSabha vote making a wayfor the discerning voters for theselection of decent candidates. Itis discerning to note that over60lakh NOTA votes were cast in the16thLokSabha elections in theselection of candidates which isan improvement from 49 O optionintroduced in the last by-electionwith a filled up form. This time itis embedded into electoralmachines for maintaining secrecy. The disproportionately high useof NOTA votes were cast in thereserved constituency, thehighest NOTA vote last polled inthe Nilgiris. over 46000 votesmore which is more than theCongress candidate got. In SouthBangalore, NOTA votes polledwere more than the independentcandidates’ votes. Across TamilNadu, 5.6 lakh NOTA voterschose to express thedissatisfaction by NOTA.

Digital divide : Political partiesthis time had adopted high octaveonline propaganda which came inhandy like social cloud, mobileanalytics and street cornermeetings like BJP’s ChaipeCharcha campaign, Moditalking from giant screen tovoters. American system ofpresidential elections faced forthe first time the politicaldiscourse entered around PrimeMinister hopefuls, Modiand

Rahul Gandhi. The high turn-outof young voters was a formidable149.36 million with states highyoung voters in Tamil Nadu,Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh,Jharkand and Chattisgarh. Bitesand barbs, stings and spoofswere high in the absence ofproper debates which were highin the agenda. The electioncommission has condemnedthese and taken action. Moreover, this election saw morenumber of youngsters, womenwere elected,on the negative side, people with more criminalbackground were elected whichis an upward trend compared to2009 polls. The political partiesshould not give tickets to suchcriminal background persons tocontest in the elections. Thiselection also saw a big turnoutand assistance in hardcampaigning where number ofNRE volunteers participatedvoluntarily, taken leave from theirestablishments and thousands ofRSS volunteers workedceaselessly day and night for thedefeat of UPA and pave way for ahuge victory for BJP and alliesand PM candidate NarendraModi.

According to Association forDemocratic Reform (ADR) datareport, 165 of the reelectedMP’sdisclosed an averageincrease of 137% in their assets, out of them, 71 declared criminalcharges, 21 disclosed who had nocriminal charges in 2009 havedeclared such charges in 2014.Out of 543 MP’s, 315 MP’s, about58% have been elected for thefirst time, AIADMK leads with92% MP’s, Shiv Sena with 67%.40 are first time women MP’s and171 MP’s are reelected from the15th LokSabha, half of them fromBJP and 31 from Congress.

Overall, the elections wereconducted in a smooth mannerand it is imperative thatNarendraModi as thePrimeMinister must ensure hisagenda of good governance, economic change for a developedIndia, more employmentgeneration and inflation controlmeasures etc. and also preservethe idea of India as a pluralist andinclusive landscape in which allcitizens have equality before thelaw as enshrined and guaranteedby the constitution, is upheldconsistently and transparently. His style of functioning and histhirst for development of India inall spheres is watch-worthy.
