full‐length Spinefarm Records debut, Nocturnal Masquerade. These five musicians—Wills Weller [drums], Jason Goss [guitar], Matt Mielke [guitar], Matt Arensd

[bass], and Justin Matthews [vocals]—certainly know how to create combustible artwork.

The delicate balance of guttural guitar gnashing, polyrhythmic stop‐start percussion, and the most delightful vocal schizophrenia this side of the Mississippi fuels

this midnight waltz. It’s an amalgam the group has unlocked over the past few years beginning with a string of independent demos, their Schizophrenic Jubilee E

and tours supporting the likes of Periphery, The Faceless, After The Burial, The Contortionist, and more. However, in April 2015, they honed and focused this att

spending an uninterrupted month in a Maryland studio with producer Taylor Larson [Darkest Hour, Capture The Crown, Periphery], creating what would become

Nocturnal Masquerade.

Nocturnal Masquerade commences with the budding explosion of “The House (That Fear Built),” which relays a relatable emotion. “That song was about the

turning point for me where I really wanted to get out of my town, experience new things, and live my own life,” admits Justin. “I had this urge to do something

different.”

Immediately after, the grinding freight train of “Lace & Anchor” derails on a haunting refrain, which sees Justin “dig deep to pull something out that I wanted to

about but was afraid of.” “Blue” offers a mid‐album rumination on “overcoming obstacles in your way” with a bombastic break and deliberate smash. “Diamond

for Gold” enlists the vocal talents of Periphery frontman Spencer Sotelo, expanding the boundaries and then destroying them in a hypnotic twin

Hailing from Montreal, Bridgeway is a band to be reckoned with and you will know this the minute you hear their powerful album WhatchWant From Me.

After opening for international band Hedley in 2012, Bridgeway became friends with the group and during summer 2014, the boys went tVancouver to record a part of their album with Tommy Mac at the production helm and also Hedley’s bass player. Strange Culture (OST): In 2007, Director/artist Lynn Hershman-Leeson heard of a strange situation of an artist being arrested asa bioterrorist due to the fact that his "art" used harmless mold.She gathered a number of friends to make a film to bring moreattention to the artist's plight. Among the friends were TildaSwinton and The Residents who had worked with Ms Hershman

on her previous film, Conceiving Ada. The Rivers of Hades: Anaural art piece, Chaos Is Not Just A Theory, was written by TheResidents in 2007 to accompany the release of The Residentstoy figures designed by Steve Cerio. The sound installation wasnot included in the final gallery presentation, however, and theessence of the much larger project was reduced to this piece,The Rivers of Hades. Haeckel's Tale: The Showtime Channelhas a long running horror TV series, Masters of Horror. Theseason included a Clive Barker story, Haeckel's Tale. Director,John McNaughton (Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer), wasemployed to oversee the project. McNaughton called in TheResidents to score the film after having worked with them on aprevious film, Condo Painting. For unknown reasons, the scorewas not used for the broadcast. Atlantic Records drew up contracts and we signed the next da Ahmet told us he wanted to produce us in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and we flew there in the spring and recorded most othe tracks to Off The Shelf. I wrote some newer songs, Let Me

Go, Don't You Hear Me Callin' and Me and My Guitar thatreplaced some of the earlier cuts from the first sessions. Wefinished up the album in LA and it was finally released in the fof 1971. In the words of John Batdorf: After releasing our first album, "Off

The Shelf" and then touring the country for most of that year, it

was time to think about making another record. I had written

most of the songs in hotel rooms or wherever else I could write.

At that time David Geffen had formed a new West Coast label

called Asylum and since we were based in L.A. Ahmet Ertegun

let us switch labels since Asylum was under the NY based Atlantic/ WEA umbrella. We chose Bill Halverson to produce us

at the Record Plant and used our touring band to record the

tracks. We had a few guest players and also added strings on

three songs that were arranged by the great Jimmie Haskell. The

album was an immediate FM hit and we went back out on the

road for several months. This was probably our signature record.

The song Home Again put us on the map for good.

Mark and I put together some new songs and went out shopp

for a record deal. Clive Davis had just started Arista Records

decided to sign us. We chose Tom Sellers to produce the rec

because Clive liked him and we wanted to get started. We

recorded the whole album in LA at various studios. This album

by far was our most commercially accepted record but Clivemade us record songs written by other people and chose to

homogenize our sound and turn us into his next Simon and

Garfunkel. Although we loved them, that's not who we were a

the record was no way close to how we envisioned ourselves

solo jams, all cut out and sweetened like iced tea. We liked it,

we lost artistic control and we wished we had done it another

way but Clive was the boss so that was that.

Webster began his musical life whilst still in Elementary school,studying violin and teaching himself piano. After a short timeplaying for silent film, Webster moved to Amarillo, Texas, wherehe was taught rudimentary saxophone by Budd Johnson. In 1930he left Amarillo to perform with the Gene Coy's Happy Black

Aces, and would be Coy who bought Webster his first tenor, as

he later explained: "I couldn't express myself on alto. The tenorhad a bigger sound." A major milestone during this period of hiscareer came from Webster's association with Duke Ellington,having first appeared with the bandleader as early as 1935, andwould become a full time member of his orchestra by 1940.Webster was often quoted as saying that Johnny Hodges,Ellington's alto saxophonist, has a major impact on his ownplaying style, and his contributions can be heard on such famousrecordings as 'Cotton Tail,' his signature tune, and 'All Too Soon.'In fact, alongside bassist Jimmy Blanton, Webster's contributionsto Ellington's group were considered of such important that theorchestra was referred to as The Blanton-Webster Band for atime. However, Webster would eventually leave in early August1943, with a physical confrontation with Ellington. Following hisdeparture, Webster spent much of the 1940s playing as bothleader and sideman. In 1953 he recorded his first full LP asleader, King of the Tenors (Verve), which featured the playing ofpianist Oscar Peterson who would become one of Webster's keycollaborators throughout the rest of the decade.

The 1950s saw Webster's career going from strength to stren As the decade drew to a close, Webster formed a quartet withbaritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. The album they releasetogether has since been hailed one of the finest albums eitheartist ever recorded and garnered a five star review in TheRolling Stone Jazz Record Guide. The Webster-Mulligan grouwould continue to perform regularly, particularly at theRenaissance club in L.A. where they would record a live albuwith blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon. Webster would go on trecord his own live album at the same venue, with a new banguitarist Jim Hall, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Red Mitchell on baand drummer Frank Butler. Webster relocated to New York inearly 1960s and released a trio of eclectic albums: the string-laden The Warm Moods in 1961, becoming the first musicianbesides Frank Sinatra to release an album on the Reprise laba collaboration with trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison on Ben

Upon his arrival in Europe, his fortunes took an almostimmediate upturn and his successful London gig soon lead toweek-long residences in Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen.

Although his health began to decline, his playing did not, andindeed Webster would go on to reunite with Duke Ellington fonumber of performances at the Tivoli Gardens as well asrecording albums with the Georges Arvanitas and Tete Montotrios.

the enormous benefit of hindsight and wider perspective, it isnow possible to view the recordings he made surrounding theNewport gig - all too often talked down in jazz histories, or at bestmerely overlooked - in a fresh light, the link between the old andthe new.

1955 would close with the début of the new Miles Davis Quintet,a band destined to become one of the most widely influentialsmall groups within the music, and an outfit that was also todefine the working modus operandi Davis would utilize for themuch of the following twelve years. The albums he tapedimmediately prior to the quintet's launch, however, tell asomewhat different story, with the trumpeter engaged in afascinated search for instrumentations, sonic textures and newplaying partners - changing, revamping, evolving from session to

The 1950s saw the emergence of a new and more adventurostrand of political and social satire evidenced in books andnewspapers, on stage and on radio, and especially on theburgeoning new medium of TV, but it also found its expressiomusic, and one of the most individual and celebrated musicalsatirists of the time was Tom Lehrer. A mathematician andacademic by profession, he recorded a 10" LP of his firstcollection of songs in 1953 "Songs Of Tom Lehrer", whichgradually brought him to public attention, following it severalyears later in 1959 with a 'Live' LP of new material "An EveninWasted With Tom Lehrer" which was also recorded in a studienvironment that year as "More of Tom Lehrer". In 1960 a fur'live' album including material from his first album was releaseas "Tom Lehrer Revisited", the US version comprising a siderecorded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and aside recorded in Australia. The Decca UK release comprised same songs drawn entirely from the MIT concert.

This 2-CD collection comprises the complete content of all fouLPs, using the Decca UK version of the last of those. It's acomprehensive and thoroughly entertaining anthology of hisbest-known repertoire with studio and 'live' versions of his

hilariously irreverent and off-the-wall compositions.
