altyd gratis parkeerplek was. ’n Finansiëlehaalbaarheidstudie word gedoen om vas testel watter tariewe die beste sal wees.”Sy sê die verbeterde parkeergebiede gaan

gepatrolleer word om sodoende beter mis-daad te kan bekamp en ook om ongemagtig-de parkeeraanwysers uit te hou.“Inwoners wat die inkomstedienstekan-

toor besoek, sal noumakliker parkering kankry en ook veiliger voel.” Sy sê die “vuil toe-stand” van die parkeerterrein oorkant dieposkantoor sal ook verdwyn.

Leerders van die Laerskool Totiusspog hier met hul “aangenome”poppies, wat eintlik die lewe van ’nregte kind verteenwoordig. Diépoppies word gebruik in ’n gewildeveldtog van die Badisa Trio(Bellville, Durbanville, Kraaifonteinen Brackenfell), wat kinders oor hulregte leer. Dié kinders het elk ’npoppie aangeneem, terwyl daareintlik van die hele klas gevra isom slegs één poppie hul eie temaak. Daar is reeds 67 poppies bydié skool aangeneem. fasiliteite-afdeling meen daar is genoeg ba-ne in die breër Bellville-area om vir die aan-vraag van dié wat tans die fietsrybaan ge-bruik, voorsiening te maak.

OntwikkelaarSy meen dat hulle “maklik hier geakkom-

modeer kan word, terwyl die ontwikkelaarvoortgaanmet die ontwikkeling by die fiets-rybaan”. Volgens Walker het Devmet inge-stem om die oefensessies vir so lank moont-lik te akkommodeer, totdat bouwerk dié ses-sies onmoontlik sal maak.“Die ontwikkelaar het aangedui bouwerk

sal in Oktober 2014 begin,” het Walker be-vestig.“Die onderskeie klubs is bewus gemaak

de bouwerk selfsmeer sportkodes te kan ak-kommodeer. Sy verwag dat die hele projeknagenoeg 26 000 direkte en indirekte werks-geleenthede sal skep.

appearance as it is an umbrella term for afew different “strains”.They are generally medium-sized with a

waarin mense – meestal kinders – mekaarmoes verwurg totdat hulle flou word, om glo’n gevoel van euforie te beleef net voordatbewusteloosheid – of die dood – intree.Die sogenaamde “neknominations” is ook

’n onlangse een. Dié speletjie verwag van diedeelnemer om hulself te verfilm terwyl hy/sy ’n alkoholiese drankie, gewoonlik bier, ineen asemteug wegslaan en dan die video opdie internet laai. Die deelnemer nomineerdan twee ander om dieselfde te doen.“Ons wou met dié nuwe gier die publiek

Durbanville.Belinda Sharp, wat in Vierlandenwoon, vertel dat sy verlede Woensdag-middag kort voor drie-uur die teer “sien

beweeghet” toe sy inBotterblomstraat ry– op pad om haar kinders by die skool tegaan haal.

SkoendoosSy het die klein skilpadjie opgetel en in’n skoendoos gesit, wat in die karwas. ’n Ou en ’n nuwe misdaadtendens hetdie afgelope twee weke in Boston kopuitgesteek, het die Bellville-polisie

bevestig.Volgens kapt. Fienie Nimb, woordvoerder

van dié polisiekantoor, is daar in bietjiemeer as ’n week vyf voorvalle aangemeldwaarin allooiwiele (“wheel mags”) van mo-tors afgesteel is. “Daar is by twee voertuievoorverlede week allooiwiele afgesteel, endrie in laasweek – een Maandag- en tweeWoensdagaand,” het Nimb gesê.

“Die verdagtes móét met ’n motor beweeg,want al vier die wiele is in dié gevalle verwy-der,” het sy gesê.

Sy sê die meeste van die voorvalle is bo12de Laan aangemeld. “Die afhaal van die al-looiwiele verg ’n spesiale moersleutel en dieverdagtes het een van dié implemente. So,al het jou motor wielnawe (“wheel nuts”)aan, parkeer dit maar liewer langs jou erf,of in die motorhuis,” sê Nimb.

Sy sê daar was ook verskeie voorvalle regoor Boston waar daar by huise se motorhui-se ingebreek is.

krities kyk na die sekerheid rondom hul mo-torhuisdeur. Die meganismes waarmee huldeure sluit, is nie opgewasse teen die skelmsnie.

Hy sê mense vervang nie die slot of mega-nisme van hul motorhuis nie, al bied dit minweerstand teen die eenvoudigste implemen-te wat gebruik word om dit oop te forseer.

“Hulle aanvaar maar as vanselfsprekenddat die deur op daardie manier sluit – of ditgenoegsame sekerheid bied, of nie.”

gaan sien het en dat die eerste been van dieuitleg van dié sentrum, waar “enige instru-ment van viool tot dwarsfluit” vir oud en

jonk aangeleer sal word.“Daar gaan drie klaskamers wees, en ’n

vierde een wat ek as kantoor sal gebruik.Maar ek gaan self ook daaruit klasgee,” sêsy.Sy is ’n gospel-kunstenaar met 26 jaar as

Speeding will soon be a concern of thepast for residents of Boston in Bellvilleas the city has approved a number of

traffic calming measures.However, the city says residents will have

to wait until its budget allows for the neces-sary measures to be implemented.

“While the requested speed humps havebeen approved, it is dependent on the availa-ble budget,” said Ward 2 councillor Leonorevan der Walt.

“The number of requests for speed calm-ingmeasures is usuallymore than the budg-et allows for. We will, however, implementthemeasures, even if not immediately,” vander Walt said.

This comes after the city assessed thestreets in question, namely: ClevelandStreet and Boston Street at the Van NiekerkPark, Lincoln Street between Frans Con-radie Drive and 18th Avenue, BroadwayStreet between Frans Conradie Drive and18th Avenue, 8th Avenue and Duminy

Street, and 2nd Avenue and GladstoneStreet.

In order to decide if an area needs speedcalming measures, the assessment weighsup a number of factors.

These include speed, accident history,traffic volumes, pedestrian facilities, prop-erty access, population density, parking ac-tivity, pedestrian or cyclist activity, andpublic amenities.

Potential for conflict“These factors are combined to determine

the overall potential for conflict,” said vander Walt.

The city gives special considerationwhere high volumes of vulnerable road us-ers such as primary school children exit di-rectly onto public residential roads (Class 4and 5 roads).

This includeswhere roadusers exit direct-ly from other public facilities like a devel-oped play park, or where accidents betweencars and pedestrians can occur, she said.

She said speeding is not reason enough toimplement calming measures, but has to be

taken into accountwithall the above factors.As it happens, all the above factors were

taken into account when the go-ahead forcalming measures was given, “with thehighest possible score being awarded forspeeding”, she said.

The mentioned streets are all consideredClass 5 residential roads located within amedium density residential area and all of-fer a good view over the length of the road.They are also broad enough to accommodatepedestrians off the roadside, she said.

The calming measures for Cleveland andBoston Street at the Van Niekerk Park hasmany vulnerable pedestrians and high pe-destrian movement that increases the riskof accidents.

This area will get three speed humps, Vander Walt said.

At Lincoln Street betweenFransConradieand 18th Avenue, there is also a play parkand nearby primary school, which meansplenty of vulnerable pedestrians.

At 8th Avenue and Duminy Street, thereis another play park.

“We recommend the implementation of afence along the play park boundary with thepedestrian gate along 8th Avenue. In addi-tion we also recommend a speed hump nearthe pedestrian gate along 8th avenue.”

At 2nd Avenue and Gladstone Street thereis a fenced and locked play park. It beinglocked means there is no heavy pedestriantraffic. She said the city would not imple-ment any traffic calmingmeasures at this in-tersection.

The country is this week celebrating Na-tional Science week and a local universityhas some plans up its sleeve to make it anunforgettable experience for learners andstudents alike.

The week, a Department of Science andTechnology (DST) initiates a countrywidecelebration of science from 2 to 9 August.

The theme this year will be “Today’s sci-ence, tomorrow’s world”, and the staff attheUniversity of theWesternCape’s (UWC)Science Learning Centre for Africa (SLCA)will be in charge of running entertainingeducational activities.

“In addition to promoting science, engi-neering and technology amongst varioussections of the population, National Sci-ence Week is intended to expose learners,educators, parents and other members ofthe public to science careers, opportunitiesand events, particularly among disadvan-taged sections of thepopulation,” saidUWCspokesperson Aidan van den Heever.

He said SLCA staff will conduct a scienceroad show in the southern Cape to encour-age schools todevelop science clubsandsci-ence-related activities for learners andteachers.

“Other science promotion activities willbe conducted on the UWC campus and insurrounding schools.”

Their activities will begin with an openlecture, said Aidan. “Geotagging”, a function on smartphones and tablets that adds geographicalinformation to the photographs and videosone takes, can be retrieved by criminalswhen viewing the footage on social web-sites.

“Geotagging lets viewers know where apicture was taken. While this is great fora beautiful view, it’s a risk for endangeredwildlife,” explains Ettienne JacquesKüyler, the biodiversity area coordinatorof the Blaauwberg region.

To disable geotagging on an iPhone,press “Settings” and select “General”, then“Location Services”. Disable the applica-tions that make use of GPS information. OnBlackberry, select the camera icon. Press“Menu”, followedby “Options”. Set the geo-tagging option to “Disabled” and save. OnAndroid activate the camera and press thesettings button. Turn off “Geotagging” or“Location Storage”.

Die skool vir die kinders van plaaswer-kers van Morgenster en omringende plase isin 2009 begin. Die kinders kry nie net onder-rig en stimulasie nie, maar ook twee maaltyeen twee peuselhappies per dag.

Sandra het haar vriendin, Melinda, inspi-reer om by haar aan te sluit en die twee pakal wat ’n staproete is aan ter voorbereiding.Meeste van hul stapgereedskap is reeds deurHi-Tec en Cape Union Maart geborg – hullekort nog net slaapsakke en handskoene.

Hier is (van links) die sirkusmeester, Mario (Dean Balie), sirkusnar (Martelize Kolver) en Vlooi(De Klerk Oelofse). Voor is Wilma (Crystal Donna Roberts).

Dis Augustus en dit beteken Vlooi en symaats neem weer die Kunstekaap-teater ophorings van Maandag 11 tot Vrydag 29 Au-gustus.

Die vervaardigers, Krazy Katz, in same-werking met Kunstekaap, het besluit datVlooi nou al op so baie avonture was – ditis per slot van rekening die veertiende jaar– dat hulle moes koppe krap vir ’n nuwe be-stemming en wat kan meer opwindendwees as die sirkus?

Die Cirque du Amar, al die pad van Parys,Frankryk, is in die dorp en al wat leef enbeef wil na die sirkus gaan.

Vlooi, Wilma en Ouma is van die gelukki-ges wat kaartjies kon kry, maar ’n groot tra-gedie tref die sirkus – waterpokkies.

A local businessman is setting out ona music adventure, having just rele-ased his debut album, Verily, Verily.

Hyram Doolings, a Zevenwacht familyman, has roped in some of Cape Town’sfinest musicians to help on the gospel al-bum he launched in Kenridge this wee-kend.

“As a little boy I always wanted to sing,”Hyram says. His grandmother took him tochurch where she in-troduced him to thechoir master and itwas just a few monthsbefore he was singingsolo.

“The choir used tosit upstairs and the pe-ople used to turn theirbacks to see who thislittle boy singing is,”Hyram recalls.

Almost 50 yearsdown the line, Hy-ram’s desire to singturned into a “huge de-sire to write”, andthat’s how Verily, Veri-ly was born.

As a Capetonian, Hy-ram says he was al-ways fascinated byjazz, and he alwayswanted to sing a “jazzykind of gospel”.

While he hopes to spread the messageof God’s love, some of the songs are relatedto his own struggles, which brought himcloser to God.

As a child, Hyram was exposed to an al-coholic father and an abusive mother, andsinging was an escape for the young boywho once tried to commit suicide by jum-ping into a river.

He was saved by his uncle, but thatwasn’t the end of his near-death experien-ces. He got trapped in quicksand, nearlydrowned, and was hit by a car, which sawhim go through twelve operations and oc-cupational therapy to even out his mouth.

“Some of the songs are related to the suf-

fering of Jesus and I could somehow to re-late to that through my own suffering, butnothing compares to his suffering for me,”Hyram says.

While he points out that this theme isn’texplicitly laid out in the lyrics, it can befound in the “feeling of the music”.

Hyram’s grandmother used to oftenread the Bible to him and his siblings andthe albums’ name come from a scriptureshe was particularly fond of, John5:24:“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, excepta man be born of water and of the Spirit,

he cannot enter intothe kingdom of God.”

He says it was hisgrandmother’s rea-ding that eventuallyled to the album,which he has dedica-ted to her.

Hyram says he takeshis hat off to the peoplewho worked with himon Verily, Verily. “It’sguys that have reallybeen in the industryfor a long time.”

Camillo Lombard,Jonathan Rubain andDonveno Prins are justsome of the names inthe album sleeve.

It’s with the help ofhis family and theloyal people that sur-round him that Hyram

knows his business is in safe hands whilehe pursues his music career. He felt, con-sidering how tough the local music indus-try is, that he wanted to build a career andhave some money in the bank before ta-king on the music world.
