    Derek Bock, operasionele hoof

    van die stadsverbeteringsdistrik

(VRCID) in die gebied, s daar

word gereeld hulp aan mense soos

    John gebied.

    Die VRCID se maatskaplike

    dienste-arm, noem hy, doen baie

    werk met straatmense.

    Wilma Piek (maatskaplike

beer kry. Dit is egter n lang proses

omdat hulle nie die hulp wil aan-

    vaar nie, s Bock.

Hy s die VRCID neem wel su-

    permarktrollies van di mense af,

    asook die Stad se wielietjiedrom-

    me, omdat dit gesteelde eiendom

    is.

    Trollies word aan supermarkte

    terugbesorg, so ook die dromme.

Hy s di mense is ni bo die wet

    verhewe nie.

Om haweloos te wees, is nie n

    misdaad nie. Maar om stadsordon-

nansies nie te gehoorsaam nie, is

    onaanvaarbaar, s hy.

    siale gedrag te openbaar, beteken

    @linnertmb

    A

big thump!, is what Gerald de

Bruyn heard when a car hit a

    hawk on Sunday.

He saw the entire incident, fromwhen the

VW Golf hit the low-flying bird, its wind-

screen wiper coming off, the owner disem-

barking, picking up the wiper blade, and

    speeding off, swearing.

De Bruyn very gently took out the bird,

with its nostrils still covered in dry blood

and its one eye bloody and swollen shut, to

    show TygerBurger.

He had built the bird amakeshift bed and

soft shelter in a contraption resembling a

    trolley, but not quite.

From the middle of a milk crate, De

Bruyn, who is homeless, took the bird out.

    Rescued

He was much wilder yesterday when I

found him, he explained as the bird, with

its feet tied loosely, snapped at his hands.

If I could have the opportunity to name

it, Id call it Pure White. Not because its

white, but because its innocent, he said.

That driver of the Golf had no idea what

kind of bird he hit. It is a hawk. You dont

just hit a hawk and drive off. I saw it and

immediately scooped it up, De Bruyn said.

De Bruyn brought the bird to the shop in

Bellvilles CBD on Monday where he nor-

mally goes to sell bric-a-brac given to him

    by residents.

Not knowing what to do with the hawk,

the owner of the shop in Kort Street, Steven

Erasmus, proceeded to call TygerBurger in

    search of information.

The bird had a tag from the University of

Cape Town (UCT) on its foot.

    Referred

Professor Peter Ryan of UCTs Percy Fitz-

    patrick Institute of African Ornithology,

told TygerBurger the bird might belong to

Safring, a national bird-ringing unit that

tracks birds movements and survival on a

    national database.

It is most likely to be a black sparrow

hawk or a peregrine (falcon), he said at the

time. But it is definitely not my bird.

TygerBurger alerted the Cape of GoodHo-

pe SPCA,which in turn arranged for a near-

by emergency vehicle to fetch the bird.

The driver, Farrent Dlula, was previous-

ly at a nearby branch of the Tygerberg Ani-

mal Hospital and made his way to the CBD

    to collect the animal.

The case will be referred to our wildlife

department and taken to Grassy Park, he

said. They deal with animals like these.

V Have you rescued a wild animal lately? What did

you dowith it? Let TygerBurger know at briewe@ty

    gerburger.co.za.

Digital world is opened to the blind

    MICHELLE LINNERT

    @linnertmb

    A

    lthough completely blind, Kyle Willi-

ams (23) says he can become a heart

    surgeon.

Kyle is a junior project coordinator for Ed-

it Microsystems, the company that provides

eBraille technology. He works at the Athlo-

ne School for the Blind in Bellville.

Kyle says he tries to paint a picture for

sighted people to show how the Braillenote

Apex machine has changed his life.

Kyle, from Retreat, had an accident as a

six-year-old I fell off my aunties exercise

bike and lost his sight completely due to

a growing tumour when he was 13. It was

instantaneous: One moment I could see, the

    next I was completely blind.

But with the eBraille technology, he says

he and others like him are able to see into

the exact same digital world as the sighted.

The project was started three years ago.

It has revolutionised education for the blind

    and vision impaired, says Kyle.

Through the technology, the blind are able

to access all textbooks. We are no longer re-

active in the classroom environment, but

proactive. A teacher can easily cut informa-

tion out and enlarge it for low vision stu-

    dents to use.

For us blind students, it needs to be

retyped into Braille and there is a lot

of editing that goes intoBrailling infor-

mation, he says. Teachers now no

longer need to Braille anything. We

can go search and immediately read it

    in Braille. Information is instantly

available at our fingertips thanks to

    theBraillenoteApex technology,Kyle

    explains.

    The technology is fully operational

at the Athlone School for the Blind and

    PioneerSchool for theBlind inWorces-

    ter, and is used nationally.

For the first time in history, learners

were able to write their exams on the

Braillenote Apex, print out their an-

swers in sighted text, and have their

papers marked by a sighted marker

who would never have known it had

    been written in Braille.

It was very successful and its being

done for a second time this year, but the fo-

cus is not just on the matrics. Even the

Grade 7s are writing their exams like this.

One blind leaner is now attending a main-

    stream school.

With the programme there is a whole

new world open for us blind people. We are

no longer limited to being teachers or work-

ing on a switchboard, he says.

Hes since written a training manual on

the programme. The world is not going to

adapt to us. We need to adapt to the world.

Im now quite comfortable in this world.

Pieter Labuschagne is the managing di-

    rector of Edit Microsystems.

It was traditionally a big problem getting

learners to access proper Braille books. You

had your traditional paper version, with the

    printed Braille conversion.

The Athlone school just took the

opportunity and ran with it, moving

    paper to digital, he says.

    He said theyveworkedhard to form

    good relationships with publishers.

    Edit Microsystems was awarded

the Braille Partner of the Year in De-

cember 2014 in London thanks to their

    technology. Now blind children have

access to the internet. This is our big-

    gest success story.

    The project was officially launched

inFebruary 2013 by the specialised ed-

    ucation support directorate of the

    WCED, who supplied the equipment

    to Athlone and Pioneer schools.

    Tessa Trafford from Edit Microsys-

tems says part of their mandate is to

    encourage big businesses to partner

with them to ensure learners have ac-

    cess to education and opportunities

    through this technology.

With access to this equipment, learners

will have the opportunity to reach their

    maximum potential and find employment

once they leave formal education. Current-

ly only 3% of those who are blind are em-

ployed in South Africa. Through initiatives

such as the eBraille project we believe that

    these figures will change.

The Athlone School for the Blind in Bellville is one of only

two schools in the province which boast eBraille technolo

gy. The other is in Worcester. PHOTO: MICHELLE LINNERT

    erdekarre is nie welkom in

    Blommendal nie. Ni as hul

    drywers in die buurt kommet

die doel om te kom steel nie.

Dt is die boodskap van Eugene

    Grobler, voorsitter van die Blom-

    mendal-buurtwag, nadat daar Sa-

terdag presies s n voorval wat

nuwe intrekkers betrek het in die

    buurt plaasgevind het.

    Eugene vertel: Die perdekarre

wat by buurte inkom onder die

    voorwendsel dathulle vulliswegry,

is werklik n groot probleem. Di

mense kyk eintlik waar hulle kan

aas en diefstal pleeg, meen hy.

    Die einste persoon (in Saterdag

se voorval) het so n paarweke gele-

    Lisensie

Eugene s di lisensie het slegs

gewys hy mag n perdekar bestuur, en is

    deur die Carthorse Protection Association

    (CHPA) uitgereik.

    Nuwe intrekkerswas Saterdag omstreeks

16:30 besig om hul trek by hul nuwe woning

in Peperdruifstraat af te laai. Diemotordeu-

re was ongesluit, aangesien daar telkens in

    duidelik Eugene.

n Knaap met n perdekarretjie het ge-

kom en aangebied om te help indra. Toe die

man later sy beursie soek, is dit weg.

    vertel Eugene voorts.

Hy is in hegtenis geneemomdat hy skuld

erken het. Maar dt was het einde niet, s

Eugene.

der.

met so n verflenterde ou bakkie. Die onpad-

    waardigewaentjie is dus, voor getuies,weer

net so op n openbare pad weggesleep.

Eugene het ook n ander teorie.

Die CHPA is n groepwat hierdie

    klompie (drywers) beskerm. Die

    groepword geborg deur n organisa-

    sie uit die Verenigde Koninkryk.

Die polisie is nie bewus van hulle

nie, maar hierdie mense is vir ons

    n probleem.

    Hartseer

Diana Truter is die CHPA se seni-

or inspekteur. Sy s hulle is baie

    hartseer oor di insident.

Die inspekteur aan diens het my

    gebel om te laatweetwat gebeurhet.

Ek moes die Bellville-polisie bel om

hand by te sit, omdat sy gentimi-

deerd gevoel het vanuit n inspek-

    teursoogpunt, s Diana.

    Ons werk onder die dierebesker-

    mingswet dt alleenlik.

    affilieer by dieWorldHorseWelfare

    Association.

    hoflikheid.

Die betrokke inspekteur was in trane,

wantmense opdie toneel het geweier dat die

waentjie weggeneem word, want dis onpad-

    waardig. Ons bly neutraal.

Diana s daar is n eenvoudige oplossing:

As die buurtwag nie die werkende waens

in hul buurt wil h nie, kan hulle ons laat

weet, dan stuur ons n SMS na almal om te

    s hulle moet daar wegbly.

Nie almal het egter fone nie, so nie almal

kry die boodskap nie. Ons is opreg jammer

    oor di insident.

Di perdewaentjie is deur n vriend van die verdagte uit Blom

    mendal verwyder.

Armed robbers hit employees of a wood-

work supply factory in Stikland over the

head, then robbed the establishment of lap-

    tops and cellphones.

The incident occurred last Tuesday at the

Chipboard Cafe in the industrial area when

twomenentered the premises just after ope-

    ning time.

The factory is in Cecil Morgan Road near

the R300 highway and Bottelary Road, and

is not typically known for armed robberies.

So says Edrich Engelbrecht, one of the

    company directors.

This is the first time I hear of such a rob-

bery in this area. With the economy being

what it is, people come to look for jobs all

the time. There was nothing strange about

    it, said Engelbrecht.

These guys knewmost of the staff would

    not be there yet.

    Engelbrecht says his colleague, Johan

    Oosthuizen, usually opens the factory.

I wasnt there. Johan had just opened up

and the machines were switched on to

warm up, when two guys appeared, he

    said.

The two asked if therewere any jobs avai-

lable and Johan told them go around to the

front. He and a salesman, as well as five fac-

tory workers were there at the time, says

    Engelbrecht.

Then they pulled out the rifles. They

took laptops, cellphones, watches, that sort

of thing. They also had the safe opened and

took whatever was inside, he said.

The robbers fled. They didnt have time

to consider taking the guys wallets too, he

    said.

The police and emergency services per-

sonnel arrived a short while later and trau-

ma counselling was offered to the workers

involved, with the two injured employees

    being taken away for treatment.

    socialwelfare organisation showed

its compassion for children when it

arranged a winter camp for mostly

    homeless kids last week.

    Hewlin Compassions Hewitt de Jager,

told TygerBurger more about the camp

which was held from 14 to 17 Ju-

    ly and included teenagers from

    Durbanville, Kraaifontein,

    Brackenfell, Athlone and Delft.

    Weveworkedwith homeless

    people in the northern suburbs

for the past three years. Among

    them are children under 18,

    said Hewitt.

So we decided to take 30 of

    Our facilitators consisted of

    ders and pastors, he said.

    Hewitt said their programmes ranged

from life skills sessions to self-worth, cre-

    ativity, team work, problem-solving and

    decision-making, among others.

Among the various activities the chil-

dren enjoyed were playing tag, building

a bonfire and sharing their experiences

    during the group sessions.

The kids had three meals per day, lo-

ads of snacks in between, and lots of ga-

mes to play with. They each got two blan-

kets and a sleeping bag, each had their

own bed and own bag of toiletries with a

face cloth and towel, he said.

ccording to data released by Crime

Stats SA last week, some northern

suburbs have been dubbed the most

affected by crime in the country in their re-

    spective, often bloody categories.

    These include Kraaifontein, Table View,

Bishop Lavis and Delft, among the variety

    listedon theonlinedatabase runbyMeerkat

    Data Management.

According to the report, at least 5 900

crimes are reported to the police across the

    country each day.

    Statistics

Data released by Crime Stats SA is based

on official information from the police.

Based on these facts, it would appear the

still high levels of crime were gradually de-

    creasing.

The following is based on raw data, and

not in proportion to percentage of the popu-

lation. The data covered refers to the statis-

tics for 2014 (covering April 2013 to March

    2014).

According to these statistics, Delft ranks

seventh in the Western Cape in the murder

category (144), with Nyanga as the forerun-

ner, or precinct with the highest total (305).

Kraaifontein ranks seventh in the catego-

ry for reported house break-ins over the

year, with a total of 1 247, with Table View

    following closely with 1 235.

    Where drug-related crimes are con-

cerned, Delft ranked fourth (2 954), Bishop

Lavis fifth (2 578) and Kraaifontein seventh

    (2 516). Mitchells Plain was first with 6 044

    cases opened.

    Outdated

It is surmised by Africacheck.org that,

due to the time periods between having re-

ported the data and the financial year cov-

ered, the polices crime data might be as

    much as six months outdated.

According to Africacheck, a lot of crimes

go unreported, the police data is unaudited,

and there is widespread mistrust of the po-

lice, raising concerns over the legitimacy of

    the figures.

    A

    78-year-old Oakdaler is proving age

definitely does not stand in the way of

    keeping ones community safe.

A gift was awarded to Pieter Mouton last

week in recognition of his patrolling a total

of 27 hours in June during his shiftswith the

    Oakdale Watch (OW).

    Watch chairperson Mark Stewart said

Oom Pieters dedication knows no bounds.

Oom Pieter is our most senior patroller

(in years) and because he is one of a few re-

tired patrollers, he, like the others, is able

to put in an above average amount of patrol-

    ling hours.

    However, he regularly outshines his

peers in the number of hours patrolled,

    Mark says.

This is something that Oakdale Watch is

very grateful for and it was the reason for

rewarding him by providing a small token

    of our gratitude.

Mark says their core team is a highly dedi-

    cated and very reliable group.

But I can without a doubt say that Oom

Pieter is the most dedicated patroller Oak-

daleWatch has ever had and thismakes him

an invaluable member of our team.

Mark saysOomPieter is always the volun-

teer when one of the patrollers needs a part-

ner on a shift and communicates hiswilling-

ness via the Oakdale Watchs WhatsApp

    group.

His dedication goes beyond just giving of

his time and energy because most of the

equipment he requires for patrolling he pur-

chases out if his own pocket.

Mark saysOomPieter has not only bought

his own radio, but also donated a few radios

and magnetised decals to the watch. He had

these designed and produced of his own ac-

    cord.

Given his seniority in years, he is a real

team player with a great sense of humour

and someone we as younger patrollers

    should all try emulate.

Oom Pieters photo was published on the

groups Facebook page, showing him receiv-

ing his warm winters jacket from a local

    corporate sponsor.

Resident David Olivier said on Facebook:

Thanks, OomPiet. Its because of dedicated

people like you that the neighbourhood is

    just a little safer.

    OomPiet proves

    to be awatch hero

Pieter Mouton (78) received a warm winter

jacket from Tommy van Zyl of Afriform Cape

Town North. Oom Pieter racked up 27 hours

of patrolling during the month of June, more

    than any other watch member.

    On the coldest, wettest mor-

what I thought was a drunk

old man in our warm waiting

    room. He sat there, soaking

    wet, swinging from side to

side, his head on his chest. I

was annoyed and called two of

our workers to escort him out

as he obviously was not a

client of ours. They gently took

him by the arms, stepping over

the pool of urine by his feet.

    What happened next humbled

    me. These workers, earning a

    very small salary and being

    quite poor themselves, literally

took the clothes off their own

    back to replace his soaked

    clothing. I felt ashamed. He

was given warm coffee and a

blanket. In the end, he was

taken to the police station, as

he did not know how he got to

us. In hindsight, he might have

been ill and not drunk at all.

    What a humbling experience. I

    Rubbish not the

Ek gebruik daagliks die Otto du

    Plessis-rylaan en is verbaas dat

    vragmotors toegelaat word om

    die noodbaan en sypaadjie

    tussen Paardeneiland-rylaan en

    Milnerstraat te gebruik as n

    gratis parkeerarea.

    Van hierdie vragmotors neem

    nie aankomende verkeer in ag

    wanneer hulle hul parkeer-

    area verlaat nie en menige

    maak n U-draai by Milner-

straat om terug te draai na die

    hawe, weer eens sonder om

    aankomende verkeer in ag te

    neem.

    Op donker wintersoggende is

dit ook n probleem met die

    toename in voetgangers wat die

    bane oorsteek, veral naby die

    Caltex-motorhawe. Ek kan nie

help om te wonder of die

    padverspoelings tydens die

    renseisoen nie ook veroorsaak

    word deur die vragmotors wat

    die sypaadjies beskadig nie.

Elke vyf jaar gaan stemme op

    en word opgetree teen politieke

    partye wat hulle verkiesings-

    plakkate teen lamppale in Otto

    du Plessis-rylaan oprig, omdat

    dit die natuurskoon belemmer.

    Bring maar die plakkate,

    vragmotors kan die scenic

    roete nie lyk nie.

    SLICE OF LIFE

    Keer dat ons

    reg in eie

    hande neem

Wanneer mense die reg in hul eie hande

neem om met misdadigers klaar te speel,

moet die gevaarligte vir n land ernstig

    begin flikker.

    In n onverwante voorval vroer

vandeesweek is nege buitelanders en n

    Suid-Afrikaner aan die onderkant van

Leeukop in Kaapstad beroof. Toe die

slagoffers die booswigte n die rooftog

    agtervolg, het die Suid-Afrikaner die

    noodnommer 112 gebel sonder enige

sukses.

as 20 minute lank die 112-noodnommer,

sowel as die polisie se 10111-nommer,

geskakel het. Toe sy uiteindelik na die

    Kaapstad-Sentraal-polisiekantoor deurge-

nie geweet waar Leeukop is nie.

    afwesigheid. Sulke onbeholpe optrede (of

    kende en onaanvaarbare gedagte!

    @dezzierorke

    L

ocal filmmakers are thrilled that a

South African feature film has won

    awards at two international filmaward

    ceremonies.

The local film Born to Win

    scooped the Golden Crown

    Award for Best Evangelistic

    Feature Film at the Internati-

    onal Christian Visual Media

    Conference (ICVM 2015) in

Orlando, USA on 27 June, on-

    ly three weeks after winning

    theAdamAward forBestFea-

ture Film at the Sabaoth In-

    ternational Film Festival in

Milan, Italy. It also won the

    Bronze Crown Award for

    Best Feature Drama.

    Frans Cronj from Brac-

    kenfell, who also produced

the hit movie Faith Like Pot-

    atoes, and Cobus van den

    Berg from Eversdal, produ-

cer of the equally successfulKleinKaroo, te-

amed up to produce this movie which was

    released in August last year.

The film was written and directed by

Cronj, produced by Van den Berg and

    wholly filmed in George.

Born toWin, based on the true story of Le-

on Terblanche, poses the question: Where

    is God?

    TheCrownAwards are the biggest annu-

al film awards in the international Christi-

an film industry and have been in existence

for 60 years, whereas the Sabaoth Festival

is a bi-annual film festival where some of

the best international Christian films are

    screened, says Cronj.

Cronje, who was in Milan and Orlando to

receive the awards, said: We produce our

films to have maximum personal impact

and not with the goal to win awards, but

it is great to receive recognition for the

    work that we do.

    He said the Golden Crown

    Award in particular helps to

    market the movie world wide.

    We are awaiting the final

    paperwork, but since the an-

    nouncement of the Crown

    Awards a second major Holly-

    wood distributor has expres-

    sed interest in theatrical relea-

se of themovie. I think the qua-

lity and impact of Born to Win,

    combined with the success we

still have with Faith like Pot-

    atoes created this interest, he

    said.

    Faith like Potatoes, released

in 2006, is the true story of An-

gus Buchan and has been seen

by over 300million people in 17

languages, with over three million DVDs

    sold.

Making a film takes a massive team ef-

fort and I am proud of the team we had on

Born to Win, starting with Leon and Elma-

rie Terblanche who allowed us to tell their

story, Cobus van den Berg as producer and

two of our key executive producers Billy

and Tanja Robertson. Our lead actor Greg

Kriek played in his first lead role and sho-

wed such maturity and brilliance that he

has since been really busy on other films.

Born toWin, available on DVD, will again

be on the big screen in August and October

    through the new CrossKine network.

    saamstemmetdie opgrawerynie.Ek is baie

dankbaar daarvoor, want nou kon ek inwo-

bels.

paadjies daarna. Dit was ongelooflik om te

sien hoe hierdie kontrakteurs hul swak

werk regverdig.

    tiese kabels.
