mOviNG FORWARd iN 2010

during the last few months of 2009 we witnessed new investment being ploughed into Renault Trucks in the UK, including a state of the art new headquarters, a new dealership opening in Nuneaton as part of Renault Trucks Commercials: Renault Trucks Coventry, plus improvements made throughout existing dealerships, readying our network for 2010. in recent months, a new brand image for Renault Trucks has also been introduced, based around the concept of Renault Trucks deliver – highlighting trucks as an integral part of our society, which will be more important than ever going into this year. Across much of Europe, road links are the only means of transportation, therefore we are tasked with the imperative responsibility of developing sustainable vehicles. To this end, we continue to invest in R&d programmes, and fuel effi ciency solutions, such as the Optifuel programme to ensure our trucks go the distance.

Trucks are the pillars of the world economy, the link between producers, businesses and consumers. At one time or another, all goods in all parts of the world have been carried on a truck. The history of road transport affects you because the truck is essential to your social and economic life.

Trucks make a contribution to economic and social progress!Nowadays, our trucks are safer, cleaner and quieter than ever, while at the same time they consume less fuel. The modern Renault Trucks commercial vehicles of today represent the best in terms of state-of-the-art technology and they are there to guarantee us the quality of life we currently enjoy. The crisis felt across the whole of the goods vehicle sector does not call into question the importance our trades and businesses play in economic development. This crisis should not prompt us to call a halt to development projects essential to achieving our environmental objectives. We owe it to ourselves to be ambitious, bold and imaginative, and obviously we should stay as close as possible to our customers!

From Buenos Aires and back to Buenos Aires through Chile, all in 17 days! That’s the challenge issued to the participants of the next dakar, on 1st January 2010. Renault Trucks will be there, of course, with a Renault Kerax assistance vehicle for competitors running Renault vehicles and a Renault Sherpa that will let the press follow the progress of the rally day by day. These two

vehicles have been decorated in the national colours of Argentina (see article page 14) and Chile, both of which will celebrate the bicentenary of their independence in 2010. Renault Trucks employees in Argentina and Chile will be among the drivers at the wheel, candidates for adventure. For the manufacturer, rallies like the dakar or rally raids such as the Silk Road or Cape to Cape offer opportunities to meet customers and prospects in the regions crossed. So sales presentations promoting products and services will be featured along the rally route. in addition, the South American Renault Trucks hub is calling on innovative and personalised communication tools to reach its customers in real time: so rally news will be relayed via a blog, competitions using the Facebook networks and mini-messages (or “tweets”) on twitter. At the end of the race, the Renault Kerax assistance vehicle and the Renault Sherpa will tour the Renault dealerships in Argentina, to take part in trade days organised for customers in sectors such as the building industry.

Are you looking for a Renault Trucks photo or fi lm? At mediacenter, available at the web address http://mediacenter.renault-trucks.com, you will fi nd all the pictures and videos of the Renault Trucks brand, design, vehicles and services, as well as the industrial sites, events and the manufacturer’s history. n n n For truck drivers, driving is more than a job, it’s a passion. You just need to go for lunch at a truck stop to realise this. Now, in Europe, truck drivers do not really understand the grievances so often expressed against this truck around which their lives revolve and which is their pride and joy. Noisy, polluting, dangerous etc. it is criticised indiscriminately by the very people it serves at every moment: the consumers. indiscriminate prejudices which the following pages will lay to rest using facts and fi gures. in this respect, it is interesting to note that this negative perception of the road transport of goods is intimately linked to the living conditions enjoyed by Europeans, packed onto a small continent that is highly urbanised and serviced by a high density road network. Things are different in most other regions in the world, which are much larger, less urbanised, where road traffi c is incomparably lighter and where the truck is seen as the natural medium for transactions with the outside world. Overcoming stereotypes and giving back to the profession, particularly in these hard times, pride in the service provided to society: this is the meaning of Renault Trucks Deliver, the new signature of Renault Trucks and the perspective of this Optimum dossier.

EvIDENCE DEMONSTRATED By THE FIGURES

in response to the growth in commercial transactions and worldwide consumption, the demand for goods transport has seen constant progress, with the main benefi ciary of this being road transport. According to the Eurostat fi gures(1), in the 27 EU member countries, the market share for road increased from 67.5% to 72.7% between 1995 and 2006, at the expense of rail whose share went

down from 20.2% to 16.7% over the same period. The number of trucks on the road has increased proportionately, going from 22.8 million to 32.2 million vehicles. Other fi gures also demonstrate the socio-economic importance of the sector: in 2005, the transport of goods by road represented 2.8 million jobs and generated 258 billion euros. The reasons why road haulage is the obvious mode of transport in the eyes of industry and distributors are well-known and accepted: great fl exibility in operation, high commercial speeds and the ability to make point-to-point connections and cross borders without changing vehicles. So it was no accident that road freight traffi c through the pyrenees on the western coast (Biriatou) increased from 5,657 to 10,655 vehicles/day between 1997 and 2004. We could continue to come up with an infi nite number of further examples.

INCREASED LEvEL OF SERvICE, REDUCED NUISANCE

This increase in the number of commercial vehicles over the last few decades has brought about criticism which is contested by looking at the facts. Often perceived as noisy, dangerous, polluting and invasive, in reality trucks have continued to improve, becoming safer, greener, more fuel effi cient and quieter whilst offering better performance.Let’s take polluting emissions as an example. Since the introduction of the fi rst European standard (Euro 0) in 1990, emissions have been reduced by factors ranging from 5 to 20 depending on the substance (nitrogen oxide, unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulates). So much so that, globally, over the past 15 years, polluting discharges have decreased by more than half in Europe, against a number of vehicle kilometres that has increased by 40%. This trend will n■n■n(1) EU Energy and Transport in Figures, Statistical Pocketbook 2007/2008.

continue with the full effect of the Euro 4 and Euro 5 standards. Thus, by 2013, the reduction in polluting discharges should reach 80%.Now let’s discuss consumption: while improving its productivity, the truck has also become more fuel effi cient. Therefore, since 1960, average vehicle consumption has halved while, at the same time, the average operating speed has doubled. The new generation engines developed for Renault Trucks’ vehicles only emphasise this trend, with fuel consumption savings of up to 6% on the latest models, compared to the Euro 3 reference vehicles.Trucks: noisy and dangerous? There too, the grievance does not stand up to an examination of the facts: since 1960, the acoustic impact of the truck has been reduced by a factor of 12 and, since 1980, their involvement in road accidents has gone down by a factor of 7.5. The private motorist is not always aware of this, but a real gulf separates him from the professional truck driver, who is subject to strict regulations, particularly in terms of vehicle testing, medical examinations and training.

CONTROvERSIAL TRUCKS, wELL-LIKED TRUCK DRIvERS

A recent survey conducted at the request of the French Federation of Transport and Logistics Companies (TLF) shows that the perceived images of the truck and its driver are separated in the mind of the public. it appears that, although the truck is seen as a positive image by 57% of the French public and as a negative image by 42%, the driver is a positive image for 71% of those questioned and a negative image for 27%.

n■n■n

if we now ask the French how they perceive the developments that have taken place over the last 10 years in the general condition of trucks, the pollution they generate and their involvement in accidents, we note that satisfaction is restricted to the general condition of the trucks. As for the drivers, the improved image is clearly more encouraging, since their perceived sense of responsibility has improved by 34 points and their behaviour at the wheel by 16 points. Although this is a development in the right direction, in Europe the truck is still far from enjoying the image it deserves.

n n n From the heaviest range to light commercials, all Renault Trucks’ vehicles are the result of ceaseless striving for innovation. Engine, gearbox, driving position etc., we’ve looked at everything to offer you increased technical performance in terms of your vehicle’s commercial speed, fuel savings, a reduction in polluting discharges and greenhouse gases, lower noise emissions, reinforced safety, robustness and driver comfort. Let’s take a closer look at the results gained in two areas: greenhouse gases and safety.

PRAGMATIC ANSwERS TO CLIMATE CHANGE

With successive Euro standards, the battle against polluting emissions is being won, but now there is another task: the management of greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to climate change, the fi rst of which is CO2. There may be a lot to do, but we’ve already gone a good part of the way. Since 1960, for three times the power, the average consumption of a heavy vehicle has been halved so that today, a heavy vehicle consumes on average 30 l/100 km, to transport a load equivalent to 40 cars. Not wanting to stop when doing so well, Renault Trucks has created the Optifuel Offer, combining an optimised vehicle (vehicle not available in the UK), the consumption monitoring software, Infomax, and an economical driving training course, Optifuel Training. Together they will allow fuel savings of up to 15% at fl eet level, i.e. 4.5 l/100 km or 120 g of CO2 per kilometre. To go even further, Renault Trucks has deployed a laboratory vehicle christened Optifuel Lab over thousands of kilometres in real conditions, showing that there are still savings of over 10% in fuel consumption to be made, owing principally to redesigned aerodynamics. 10% less fuel means 10% less CO2.

OBJECTIvE: SAFETy

Calculated as the number of personal injury accidents per billion kilometres covered, the frequency of accidents involving heavy vehicles,

in France and across the EU, fell by a factor of 7.5 between 1980 and 2007. This trend is encouraging, but any accident is one accident too many. This is why Renault Trucks is working with the European Centre of Studies on Road Safety and Risk Analysis (CEESAR) in order to understand, by means of case studies, the causes and consequences of accidents. This has a dual objective: to prevent accidents and limit their severity. This collaboration has contributed to the development of new safety systems. For proactive safety, Renault Trucks vehicles are fi tted with electronically controlled braking systems (EBS), which have improved braking performance and response times, ESp systems with roll-over prevention sensors and rear view mirrors with integrated cameras to improve visibility at all angles. On the passive safety side, Renault Trucks is introducing energy-absorbing underrun protection, which is more effi cient than the current rigid systems. it is also redesigning the cabs to reinforce their structures and facades, fi tting them with protection devices complementary to the traditional seat belts, such as safety cushions.

n n n From the heaviest range to light commercials, all Renault Trucks’ vehicles are the result of ceaseless striving for innovation.

OBJECTIvE: SAFETy

n n n Road transport of goods would seem to be the ideal scapegoat. Should we feel shame working within such an industry? Certainly not. This is the assumption behind the new Renault Trucks positioning: with its new brand message, the company reasserts its pride; pride in manufacturing trucks for drivers, for hauliers, for everyone who uses a truck in their daily work, for a whole industry essential to everyone’s well-being.

PROMOTING THE TRUCK INDUSTRy

This new positioning promoted by Renault Trucks has not sprung from nowhere: it is in line with the continuation of a number of actions undertaken by Renault Trucks to affi rm the central place held by the truck in our society. it is much more than a simple marketing strategy, its purpose is to defend a whole profession that is too often disparaged. The position taken by Stefano Chmielewski, chairman of Renault Trucks, vis-a-vis the French and European public authorities, illustrates this. For several years now, the company has been vocal in its work to relax statutory requirements and proposed solutions for improving road transport for the greater benefi t of all.

RENAULT TRUCKS DELIvER

We fi nd these ideas expressed in Renault Trucks’ communications. visually, in photos showing vehicles manoeuvring in their work spaces, signifying that the truck can deliver everywhere in the world without harming the environment. in words, with a brand campaign showing how trucks contribute to our communities by bringing well-being by means of the goods they deliver or the services they offer to those who use them in their work. The new positioning of the Renault Trucks brand is based on values such as commitment, customer support and honesty, to put an end to the hypocrisy of the place of the truck in society. These values remind us that trucks are indispensable in our globalised society. in fact, in 2002, Renault Trucks had already effectively replaced the Franco-French name Renault v.i.. From now

on, the signature appears in English everywhere: Renault Trucks Deliver. A simple concept which implies the notions of supply, deliver, and providing a solution; this is our commitment. it clearly explains Renault Trucks’ mission, the reason why trucks are made and used, and why Renault Trucks and its customers are proud of them.

n n n The economic crisis is here, reducing commercial transactions and transforming the shortage in road transport into an overcapacity. No one can predict how long this situation will last, but one thing is certain: the growth of the world population, particularly in cities, will inevitably drive up demand, posing the problem of the sustainable transport of goods. however paradoxical this may seem, even in a period of crisis, we have to prepare for it.

FOUR BELIEFS…

At Renault Trucks, we have certain beliefs. The fi rst is that we have no choice but to rely on road transport in many instances. in France and across the EU, 80% of the volume of freight transported travels over distances of less than 150 km, and 60% over distances of less than 50 km. As we know the majority of operators believe rail to become relevant for distances of 500 km and upwards, and that extending the canal networks would be a herculean task, so we can measure the limits of the transfer from road to rail or water, even if an intelligent way of using all three modes of transport were developed. Our second belief is that, in the foreseeable future, no energy source appears to be able to replace diesel for long distance transport and we should therefore concentrate on reducing the number of litres consumed per 100 km.Our third belief is that we cannot expect the vehicles to do everything,

and that the adaptation of the road infrastructure has a considerable role to play in the development of the sustainable transport of goods. When a 40 tonne truck travels 10 km on the fl at at a steady speed, its fuel consumption is around 3.5 litres. For the same journey in congested traffi c, stopping every 100 metres, the vehicle consumes 35 litres, 10 times more! This shows the impact of traffi c congestion on CO2 emissions, and on hauliers’ balance sheets, and hence the importance of modifying the infrastructure, especially motorways, in order to ensure a smooth traffi c fl ow. This belief has driven Renault Trucks to become a founding member of Lyon Urban Truck & Bus (LUTB), an organisation whose objective is to respond to the challenges raised by the growth in the mobility needs of individuals and goods in an urban environment. Our fourth belief is that the European consumer will have to change his habits. The economical transport of goods means primarily ensuring that trucks run fully laden. The development of the mail order business and home delivery has given rise to courier delivery services, with consumers wanting to take delivery of their orders within 24 hours. And so an army of small trucks, often carrying small loads, run around dropping off a parcel here, a parcel there. many miles for little volume. if the consumer could accept to wait a little longer for his order to be delivered, and if he could collect it himself from a local delivery point, bigger trucks could be used fully laden. To appreciate the importance of this, just remember that to transport 6 tonnes of goods using an

The evolution of the Renault Trucks brand follows a logical progression: it extends the company’s institutional actions to enhance the standing of road transport in the eyes of the public authorities; for the products, it will result in the new ranges being released in 2012 based around a redesign. Although it is too soon to reveal any models, we already know that the future vehicles from Renault Trucks will adopt a more assertive design, to emphasise the force, power, and usefulness which is characteristic of the truck. Certain research projects already herald this new positioning: for example Optifuel Lab, a demonstration vehicle which explores simple solutions to enable hauliers to be more competitive while reducing their impact on society. The reduction in fuel consumption of up to 15% offered by Optifuel Lab is a strong argument and reinforces the message that Renault Trucks wants to send: a message guaranteeing greater productivity for the transport world, and illustrating the extent to which this industry is indispensable to our society. We cannot do without the road transport of goods. This is why, every day, manufacturers like Renault Trucks are seeking to improve their offer through more effi cient trucks that leave fewer and fewer traces behind them.

… AND A vISION: COOPERATIvE ROAD TRANSPORT

Of course, everyone’s dream would be a zero impact truck, a truck with all of its positive attributes, and no negative ones. At Renault Trucks, we have taken a global approach to the problem: it is not just the truck that has to be improved, but with it the whole system for road transportation of goods, giving us a truck of the right size which uses the right energy for the right goods transport. in practice, our cooperative road transport vision is based on two concepts. The fi rst is the logical optimisation of the transport chain: from a major logistics centre to the local distribution centre, then from the distribution centre to the urban centre or the historic heart of the town. The second is an intelligent system based on communication. Let us take a closer look at this.Between the main logistics centre (often designed as a multi-transport hub that can interconnect a plane, train or boat with the truck) and the distribution centre located on the outskirts of town, the volumes to be transported are high. here we introduce a maximum capacity tractor and semi-trailer combination with a much lower fuel consumption of diesel, synthetic fuels based on gas or biofuel. This vehicle, an ‘optifuelled’ Renault magnum or premium, is designed to deliver to a distribution centre closer to the town, with high productivity. From this local distribution centre, vehicles with a GvW of 12 to 26 t or more drive off to service the towns without causing as much congestion on the streets. They use either compressed natural gas (CNG), or hybrid diesel-electric power units, technologies that are successfully developed and now available. here we will fi nd, for example, the Renault premium hybrys Tech which combines a diesel engine with an electric motor or the Renault premium distribution CNG: 100% natural

gas, 280 hp for 26 t and excellent performance in terms of local pollution. in this context, only the historic hearts of European towns and cities, where the narrow streets allow only small vehicles to pass, are serviced by light commercial vehicles, hybrid powered or 100% electric and with a maximised load capacity, like the Renault maxity for example.

TOwARDS EFFECTIvE ROAD TRANSPORT

As well as complementary transport routes, the second approach to optimising the transport of goods is the deployment of efficient communication systems on trucks. To integrate fully within their environment, trucks must communicate not only with each other but with all other road users: car drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, etc. and also with logistics hubs and vehicle service managers, not to mention the road infrastructure. The driver will then be equipped with real-time awareness of the state of the road network, possible itineraries, delivery or parking areas for himself and for other modes of transport, for easier transportation. in a nutshell, Renault Trucks is working to provide the road transport world with intelligent vehicles to optimise operations and minimise their environmental impact.

FROM vISION TO REALITy, RENAULT TRUCKS R&D

Crisis or no crisis, Renault Trucks is maintaining the level of its investment in research and development in order to provide the most effi cient vehicles (see page 13), giving you a head start in your profession and contributing to improving the image of the road transport of goods. Renault Trucks Deliver, that’s exactly what we do, ensuring that tomorrow, going shopping at the supermarket, buying fl owers or reading the paper will still be simple for everyone, and safe for the environment.

RENAUD COMTE, 34 (FRANCE)“i’m lucky to work for a company where the directors listen to their employees, and they buy good equipment for them. We are proud because our vehicles are always clean and to a high standard. This gives a good impression to the clients. The environment concerns us all, but with all the new technology much effort is being made with regard to this. i do think however that the impact is a lot less now than it was in the past.”

JANUSZ POLAK, 39 (POLAND) “Nowadays there are trucks on the roads all over Europe and of course they emit fumes and this has an impact on the environment, on the ozone layer, but there are new EU regulations decreasing the emissions. Noise perhaps still has the biggest impact, but it’s going to be reduced as well.”

SUHEIL bUSHCAR, 46 (ISRAEL)“We strive to be professional in our work to portray a good public image. We employ the very best drivers, our trucks are fi tted with the best accessories and decorated to encourage a respectful reaction from people, they see our drivers as professionals.

FOR RENAULT TRUCKS, THE URbAN TRANSPORT OF GOODS IS NOT JUST A VISION, IT IS A COLLECTION OF R&D PROJECTS, SOME OF THEM CONDUCTED wITHIN THE CONTEXT OF EUROPEAN RESEARCH PROGRAMMES COVERING DIFFERENT TRANSPORT LINKS.

Optifuel Solutions : a programme aimed at reducing fuel consumption by up to 15% compared to the most effi cient vehicles currently on the road. The laboratory vehicle known as Optifuel Lab is used to test brand new aerodynamics.Hybrys Tech: a programme aimed at reducing fuel consumption by up to 30% with a diesel-electric power unit. A demonstrator fi tted

with a refuse collector body has already been trialled for a year. Two more will be trialled very soon: one for delivering drinks, the other delivering supplies to urban building sites.Electric Renault Maxity: the concept of the electric vehicle with a rated power of 70 hp, offering a payload of 1.8 t for a maximum speed of 80 km/h and a range of 60 km.Renault Midlum Fideus: medium range demonstrator with low environmental impact, particularly in terms of noise, allowing the possibility of night deliveries. Also equipped with interactive communication systems to optimise deliveries.CvIS-Safespot: solutions for communication between vehicles, and between vehicles and infrastructure, intended to improve traffi c fl ow and safety, and consequently distribution effi ciency.

DIRK ROSENFELDT, 41 (GERMANy)“i try to drive as smoothly as possible. i go with the traffi c fl ow and try not to accelerate unnecessarily. my speedometer is set at 90 kph. if i drive faster, i might perhaps gain 2-3 minutes, but it is not worth it. i’m actually glad that i don’t pollute the environment that much. it can’t be completely avoided, because somehow our daily food has to get to the people.”

Other fl eets that do not keep their drivers and equipment to our high standards may receive a completely different response. We are professional and proud of what we do. We equip each driver with his own truck, fully fi tted to comply with our needs and the driver’s wishes. Some will say we spend a lot of money, but it is money well spent, because it attracts professionals that can become our partners.”

MARKET

n n n With a high degree of adaptability to cyclical economic trends, the 3rd biggest economy in Latin America is feeling tremors in different sectors of activity – construction, primary sector, etc. – and anticipates a surge in vehicle orders for 2010-2011, even though prudence is still the order of the day. A trend that Renault Trucks means to exploit because, in spite of the crisis, the manufacturer has managed to increase its market share in Argentina. There are many reasons for this good performance…

TRADE ORIENTED TRUCKS

The reliability and robustness of vehicles such as the Renault premium Lander 440, particularly appreciated in the building trade or the Renault Kerax, highly rated by mine operators, contribute to the growing popularity of Renault Trucks products across Argentina, as does the loading capacity of the midlum 300 for example. A reliability and robustness that Renault Trucks does not hesitate to put to the test on a regular basis by taking part in the dakar, which in 2010 will take place in Argentina and Chile (see p. 3).

AN INNOvATIvE METHOD OF FINANCING

At a time when businesses are experiencing major difficulties in financing their acquisitions by traditional means, in particular through banks, Renault Trucks is offering the Road plan. The principle, based on shared investment, enables the customer to acquire his Renault vehicle through financing where each party guarantees the contribution of the other parties. A real crisis buster!

AN ExPANDING NETwORK

On the service side, the network of Renault Trucks distributors and repairers continues to grow. A new dealership, Gloker Trucks in Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego, has joined the existing 13 dealers and service points, along with 2 new service points. And, for 2010, further openings are scheduled in patagonia.

PRODUCT LAUNCHES

From the last quarter of 2009, new vehicles have joined the range already on offer, such as the Renault premium Lander 320 6x4 or the Renault Kerax tractor for extra heavy transport up to 120t. New services too, like the Optifuel offer, launched in 2010, which successfully reduces a vehicle’s fuel consumption.

A COMMITMENT TO SERvING THE PROFESSION

Beyond providing products and services, Renault Trucks lines up on the side of all those who take the road each day, providing the Argentine Automobile Club with a vehicle dedicated to preventive action and raising road safety awareness. Relationships with our customers cannot be imposed, they must be earned: everywhere in the world, this is the meaning of Renault Trucks Deliver.

The Rigar-La Estrella group is involved in two distinct activities: heavy goods transport, requiring vehicles with high torque to cover routes in mountainous regions, and transport on level ground for which they want the best net weight / GvW ratio, for a power rating of 300 hp. Carlos manuel García, chairman of the Rigar-La Estrella group, explains his choice: “We analysed the market offer for this segment and reached the conclusion that the Renault Premium 320 is the vehicle that best meets our operational requirements. As well as the vehicle’s technical qualities, the purchasing conditions offered by Renault Trucks and the excellent relationship we have with our distributor helped us to make our decision. In addition, the presence of the

Renault Trucks network at strategic points on our routes brings us the assurance that maintenance will be carried out in due time, which is crucial in our business!”
