    GENESIS 21:15-21 ( NRSV)

15 When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes.16 Then she went and sat down oppositehim a good way off, about the distance of abowshot; for she said, Do not let me look on the death of the child. And as she satopposite him, she lifted up her voice andwept. 17 And God heard the voice of theboy; and the angel of God called to Hagarfrom heaven, and said to her, Whattroubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; forGod has heard the voice of the boy wherehe is. 18 Come, lift up the boy and holdhim fast with your hand, for I will make agreat nation of him. 19 Then God openedher eyes and she saw a well of water. Shewent, and filled the skin with water, andgave the boy a drink. 20 God was with theboy, and he grew up; he lived in thewilderness, and became an expert with thebow. 21 He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother got a wife for him

    from the land of Egypt.------------------------------------------

    11:00 a.m.LUKE 11:5-10 (NRSV)

5 And he said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him atmidnight and say to him, Friend, lend methree loaves of bread; 6 for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to setbefore him. 7 And he answers fromwithin, Do not bother me; the door hasalready been locked, and my children arewith me in bed; I cannot get up and giveyou anything. 8 I tell you, even though hewill not get up and give him anything

because he is his friend, at least because ofhis persistence he will get up and give himwhatever he needs. 9 So I say to you,Ask, and it will be given you; search, andyou will find; knock, and the door will beopened for you. 10 For everyone who asksreceives, and everyone who searches findsand for everyone who knocks, the door wibe opened.

    JOHN 19:18-25 (NRSV)

18 There they crucified him, and with himtwo others, one on either side, with Jesusbetween them. 19 Pilate also had aninscription written and put on the cross. Itread, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of theJews.20 Many of the Jews read thisinscription, because the place where Jesuswas crucified was near the city; and it waswritten in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.21 Then the chief priests of the Jews saidto Pilate, Do not write, The King of theJews, but, This man said, I am King of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered, What Ihave written I have written. 23 When thesoldiers had crucified Jesus, they took hisclothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took histunic; now the tunic was seamless, wovenin one piece from the top. 24 So they saidto one another, Let us not tear it, but castlots for it to see who will get it. This wasto fulfill what the scripture says, Theydivided my clothes among themselves, andfor my clothing they cast lots. 25 And thais what the soldiers did. Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were hismother, and his mother's sister, Mary thewife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

    IN HONOR OF OUR MOTHERS

Mothers Day at Trinity Church hasalways been a very special day. For the firstten years of this churchs life, Mother's Daywas Womens Day.

Once I began my pastorate here, however, I moved Womens Day off of Mother's Day so that we could give properrecognition and honor to our mothers on one

day and to all of the women in our church andchurch community on a separate day. Todayis the day that we stop to honor our mothersand I want to take this opportunity to send apastoral message to all of the women whogave us life.

Because my mother is such a blessingin my life, I never thought about all of themembers in our congregation who are notblessed as I am. Shortly after becoming apastor I had members bring to my attention thefact that their mothers had abandoned them.

I had other members who told mehorror stories of how their mothers treatedthem as they sought their own agendas, sexualagendas, getting a man agendas andprofessional career agendas. Our members (aschildren of these women) got kicked to thecurb. That made Mother's Day very difficultfor them as I talked about my own mother andthe mothers who had tried to do it God's way.

On this Mother's Day I want to say tothose members that had it not been for yourmothers you would not be here! They may n

have done it God's way, but I thank God thatthey did not get an abortion. If they had, youwould not be here!

To all of our mothers who are singleparents, I write you on this day to encourageyou and to thank you. I thank you for yourhard work. I thank you for your sacrifices. Ithank you for doing your best to raise yourchildren in the church and to raise them in thefear and admonition of the Lord.

Yours is a thankless job. You wearthe stereotype of the single moms and youget the putdowns that are so easily andrapidly given by the church community. Onthis Mother's Day I want to lift you up and noput you down!

I thank you for the love that you havgiven your child(ren). I thank you for thesacrifices you have made on their behalf. Ithank you for pushing them and praying forthem. I thank you for seeing to it that they hathe very best that you could offer and onbehalf of our Lord, I say to you, Thank you!

To the mothers of our church whohave been married moms and who have hadto care for your children and your husbands(and many would say that we are childrentoo!) I want to say a special Thank you!You have worked hard. You have provided

love, nurture and a spiritual foundation foryour children.

You have done an awesome balancing

act in juggling the roles of mother, wife, friend, caretaker, nurse, cook andsuperwoman. There is no S on your chestin terms of your being superwoman. Thereis an invisible S on your soul, however, asbeing one of Gods saints! Thank you!

To the other mothers in ourcongregation, I say Thank you, also. Youhave been surrogate mothers. You havebeen play mothers. You have been thefeminine presence in the lives of many of uswho talked to you when we felt we could nottalk to our biological mothers.

For all that you have done to make lifewhat it has been for those play children of

yours, I say a special thank you also. MayGod continue to bless you and keep you.

    Bolton Bad for U.N.

Dear Trinity Members,The United Church of Christ has a

strong and proud legacy of supporting theUnited Nations. The General Synod of theUnited Church of Christ has repeatedlyaffirmed that a productive relationship betweenthe United Nations and the United States isessential for a successful U.S. foreign policy. Both the UCC Wider Church Ministries andUCC Justice and Witness Ministries hold non-governmental standing with the UnitedNations.

John Bolton, the nominee of the BushAdministration to serve as the U.S.ambassador to the United Nations, has a longhistory of opposing the work of the United

Nations. His willingness to put ideologyahead of American security has been welldocumented. Mr. Bolton has said that the dayPresident Bush retracted the U.S. commitmentto the International Criminal Court was thehappiest day of his professional career.

The Senate Foreign RelationsCommittee has raised many concerns about

entrusting the highly sensitive task of forginginternational agreements in a polarized anddangerous world to John Bolton. Theseconcerns are too great to move this nominationout of committee to the full Senate floor.

For well over ten years, Trinityprovided the Chicagoland viewing audiencewith one full hour of power. For well over tenyears, members of this church, friends of Trinity and many, many others were blessed toget the genius of Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. WrightJr. We were blessed and provided ministry tobe a blessing to several thousands in theChicagoland viewing area.

We thank God for all who watched uand worshiped with us during that period of time. As we all know, however, to everythingthere is a time and a season. The season haschanged. We were blessed to have faithful

viewers during the WJYS season. As faithfulas our viewers were, however, their viewingdid not generate any revenue.

Your church spent well over twomillion dollars airing that prime time Mondaynight worship service. Within those ten years, two million dollar expense, we did notgenerate one-tenth of the expense in revenue.

Our viewers failed to plant a seed in thisministry. They failed to purchase the sermonsor support the ministry of the churchfinancially. Life was made very easy for theviewers, as they taped the services and

sermons, week in and week out.Because we are blessed to have Dr.

Wright as our pastor, and so many others

across the globe long to be blessed by themessages God gives him, we remainedprayerful for ten years. Our prayer was forGod to lead us to minister, at least nationally,in Gods own time.

As the ministry of Dr. Wright grew, preaching and lecturing 40+ weeks out of eachyear in all areas of the world, more peopleoutside of these walls called Trinity UnitedChurch of Christ constantly prayed and askedwhy they could not get Dr. Wright on any of their religious broadcast programming. Severalothers began working on securing PastorWright and Trinity on national programming.

Because God is faithful, Trinity is nowable to share the liberation theology preachedthrough the man of God, Jeremiah A. Wright,Jr., with the nation! What a blessing thisnational ministry has already been to thechurch, within one month!

Monetary gifts, tape series orders, book sales, Trumpet Newsmagazines, etc., comein daily! We receive more calls now for orderson any given Sunday or Tuesday morning thanwe would receive within an entire month whilewe were broadcasting on WJYS. To God bethe glory!

We are encouraging our faithfulviewers who would plan their Mondayevenings around the ministry of Trinity Unite

Church of Christ to subscribe to the tapeministry. We have had monthly tapesubscribers (many living out of the country)for the past 15 years.

Understanding change is never easy.We ask you to please help us make thistransitional season of change a much easierone. Support the ministry of media and help ureach the masses. Please continue to pray forus, as we strive to do the Will of God andshare the Man of God with the world, and notsimply confine him to this small Chicagolandviewing area.

Many media outlets in this country arerun and directed by right-wing conservativeswith the financial resources to ensure that their

viewpoint is passed over to the viewers andreaders as fact. In their effort to shape theviews of those watching and reading thesemedia outlets, supporters privilegedconservative agenda not only fund the outletsto ensure that their message in disseminated, but they also hire persons to frame and delivertalking points to the media. In essence, theoutlets are being told what to think and what

to say by those with the financial resources, who only want to preserve their privilegedpositions to the detriment of those on whosebacks their riches come and have come.

Consider the following examples. So-called journalist, Armstrong Williams, washired by the government for $240,000 to pushBushs No Child Left Behind Act on hissyndicated television show. Corporations, likeWal-Mart, throw exorbitant sums of money toshows like The Tavis Smiley Show as asupporter. The chairman of PBS has recentlymade decisions which indicate their desire toinfuse more and more of the conservativeagenda into broadcasting schemes and showson PBS claiming that these decisions are anattempt to bring more objectivity and balance.

Think further as you listen to themusic on the radio, particularly with regard to

hip-hop music and stations that play hip-hop.The music played is funded by one of the fiveconglomerates that literally own hip-hop.Many times, it is music degrades women, ordealing in sex, drugs, murder, etc.

Very rarely will you hear music fromthe hip-hop or R&B genre that deals in anygovernmental criticism, or positive messages,

as if that music does not exist. It is a part of larger scheme in controlling all of media, andcontrolling the minds of people throughmessages of fear. Terrorism, homophobia, etc., are all issues used by those who controlmedia to keep people in fear, while those whorun the companies and fund the companies dowhat they will in order to preserve theirprivilege.

I encourage you to seek out otherforms of media that give another view than thone being forced upon people today. This isone purpose of our own Trinity Trumpet Newsmagazine - to offer a perspective otherthan that coming from the dominant cultureregarding the issues we face as a people.Dont depend on the major outlets to give youwhat you need regarding news. Do theresearch for yourself. When you do read orview those outlets, I encourage you to do sousing your critical-thinking skills. Whensomething arises that you dont agree with, lethe media outlet know by calls or letters. Thiis not a one-day thing, but a fight that must bwaged every day.

Measuring The Reach Of Your Stewardship

To describe a products success, newspapers sometimes state, If all the (type of item)ever sold were lined up end-to-end, theyd reach from the earth to the moon and back.Sometimes, this line is long enough to reach the moon multiple times. Its an easy way to helpreaders imagine the large quantities involved.

Theres no way of knowing how far all the donations given by Christians would reach if lined up.Of course, it isnt necessary to measure them in terms of reaching to the moon and back.

Instead, think about reaching needy families across the world with donations to a livestock program. Think about reaching students across the country with scholarships to help them go tocollege. Think about reaching the hungry in a nearby city with sandwiches made in your churchkitchen. Think about reaching the hearts of people sitting in the pews around you with musical ordramatic performances.

Finally, think of how the church has reached out to you, in one way or in many. Then try to think

of other ways you can help others with your time, talent or treasure. Could you give time to helpshut-ins maintain their property? A check to help finance our churchs expansion? A homemadedessert, afghan or bookends to be sold at a church bake sale and bazaar? A can of soup for a fooddrive, or hat and mittens for a clothing drive?

God has reached out to us, giving us time, talent and treasure. Now its our responsibility to usethose things to reach out as far as we can to others.
