    EXODUS 17:1-7 (NRSV)

1 From the wilderness of Sin the whole

congregation of the Israelites journeyed by

stages, as the LORD commanded. They camped

at Rephidim, but there was no water for the

people to drink. 2 The people quarreled with

Moses, and said, "Give us water to drink."

Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with

me? Why do you test the LORD?" 3 But the

people thirsted there for water; and the peoplecomplained against Moses and said, "Why did

you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our

children and livestock with thirst?" 4 So Moses

cried out to the LORD, "What shall I do with

this people? They are almost ready to stone me."

5 The LORD said to Moses, "Go on ahead of the

people, and take some of the elders of Israel with

you; take in your hand the staff with which you

struck the Nile, and go. 6 I will be standingthere in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike

the rock, and water will come out of it, so that

the people may drink." Moses did so, in the sight

of the elders of Israel. 7 He called the place

Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites

quarreled and tested the LORD, saying, "Is the

    LORD among us or not?"

    MARK 1:35-39 (NRSV)

35 In the morning, while it was still very dark,

he got up and went out to a deserted place, an

there he prayed. 36 And Simon and his

companions hunted for him. 37 When they fo

him, they said to him, "Everyone is searchingyou." 38 He answered, "Let us go on to the

neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the

message there also; for that is what I came ou

do." 39 And he went throughout Galilee,

proclaiming the message in their synagogues

    casting out demons.

    JOHN 3:1-6 (KJV)

1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named

Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same

came to Jesus by night, and said unto him,

Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come

from God: for no man can do these miracles tthou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus

answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I

unto thee, Except a man be born again, he can

see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith u

him, How can a man be born when he is old?

can he enter the second time into his mother's

womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily

verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born

water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into thkingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the

flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Sp

    is spirit.

DID YOU KNOW THE CIAHAS SECRET JAILS?

On August 4, 2005 (almost a monthago now), there was a report in the Associat

Press from San Juan, Puerto Rico about twoYemeni men who say that they were held insolitary confinement, in secret, undergroundUnited States detention facilities in anunknown country!

    They were interrogated by masked

for more than 18 months without beingcharged. They were not allowed any contactwith the outside world and AmnestyInternational is on the case!

Amnesty International and humanrights lawyers have issued a report stating thatthe United States has held secret detainees inthe war on terror. Sharon Critoph is one of theresearchers at Amnesty International whointerviewed the men in Yemen. She says, Wefear that what we have learned from these two

men is just one small part of the much broader

picture of U.S. secret detentions around the

world!Michael Ratner (of the United States

Center for Constitutional Rights in New YorkCity) says, The fact that there areunderground CIA facilities somewhere, wherepeople are being tortured has been known for awhile. Backing up that claim is the testimonyof the two men who are now being held in a

jail in Yemen as a part of the condition oftheir release from United States custody.

One of the men, Salah Ali, toldAmnesty International that he was originallydetained in Indonesia in August of 2003. Hesays he was then flown several days later toJordan. The other man, MuhammadBashmillah, testifies that he was detained inJordan in October of 2003 while visiting hismother there! He took a trip to visit his motherand ended up a prisoner.

Both Ali and Bashmillah testify thatthey were tortured by Jordanian intelligenceagents for four days and then they were flownto underground jails in an unknown location.Once they were there they were held in solitaryconfinement for more than 18 months!

During that 18-month period, theywere interrogated daily by United States guand they had Western music blared into thecells all day and all night. No charges wereever filed against them.

These two men told AmnestyInternational that the first jail in which theywere held was underground. It was surrounby high walls and it took more than four hoto fly there from Jordan. After six to eightmonths in that prison they were transferred modern prison, which is run by United Stateofficials. It took three hours by plane to ge

that modern prison and it also wasunderground!

Does this sound like something frommovie? This is your country at its finest, fighting terrorism! Does it frighten you? Dit wake you up?

How much more will we take as anation before we stand up and say, No morThe secrecy that shrouds the policies of thisadministration makes life for the followers oJesus a very difficult proposition. Will you

join me in prayer as we seek Gods Will tobring about a change in our country?

    INVEST TIME INIMPORTANT THINGS

As we live from day to day, we areinvesting our time and talents in various thin

Are they really important? As Christian

stewards, do we willingly volunteer some of

time and talent to the work of our church?

Whatever we are doing had better be importa

It costs us a day of our lives.

We Manage What God Has Given Us

A steward is defined as: anadministrator or supervisor; a manager. As

people of faith, we manage what God has giv

us. We are accountable to Him for we use Hi

gifts. We have both an individual and

community obligation as stewards. We need

personally decide how to develop and comm

the abilities and possessions we have. We mu

also respond to our faith community, the chu

which provides us with opportunities to heig

    the effect of our stewardship.

    Indication of Our Values

It is quite one thing to say that we ar

committed to serving God, and quite another

thing to demonstrate that with our pocketboo

But the extent to which we are willing to do

reveals whether we are offering to God that

which costs nothing, or that which is truly

    sacrificial.
