not know, 27 the one who is coming a ter me;I am not worthy to untie the thong o hissandal. 28 This took place in Bethany across theJordan where John was baptizing.

32 That evening a ter sunset the people broughtto Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The

whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesushealed many who had various diseases. He also

drove out many demons, but he would not letthe demons speak because they knew who he

A POweR Ul wORD O HOPe ROm BISHOP TUTU

    W HENEVER I am asked i I am optimistic

about an end tothe Israeli/Palestinian con ict,I say that I am not. Optimismrequires clear signs that thingsare changing meaning ul wordsand unambiguous actions thatpoint to real progress. I do not

yet hear enough meaning ul words, nor do I yet see enoughunambiguous deeds to justi y optimism.

However, that does not mean I am withouthope. I am a Christian. I am constrained by my

aith to hope against hope, placing my trustin things as yet unseen. Hope persists in the

ace o evidence to the contrary, undeterred by setbacks and disappointment. Hoping againsthope, then, I do believe that a resolution will be

    ound. It will not be per ect, but it can be just;

and i it is just, it will usher in a uture o peace. My hope or peace is not amorphous. It has ashape. It is not the shape o a particular politicalsolution, although there are some political solu-tions that I believe to be more just than others.

Neither does my hope take the shape of aparticular people, although I have pleaded tire-lessly or international attention to be paid tothe misery o Palestinians, and I have roundly

condemned the injustices o certain Israeli policies thatcompound that misery. Thus

I am o ten accused o siding with Palestinians against IsraeliJews, naively exonerating theone and un airly demonizingthe other.

Nevertheless, I insist that thehope in which I persist is notreducible to politics or identi-fed with a people. It has amore encompassing shape.I like to call it Gods dream.

God has a dream or all his children. It isabout a day when all people enjoy undamental

security and live ree o ear. It is about a day when all people have a hospitable land in whichto establish a uture. More than anything else,Gods dream is about a day when all people areaccorded equal dignity because they are hu-man beings. In Gods beauti ul dream, no other

reason is required.Gods dream begins when we begin to know each other di erently, as bearers o a commonhumanity, not as statistics to be counted, prob-lems to be solved, enemies to be vanquished oranimals to be caged. Gods dream begins themoment one adversary looks another in the eyeand sees himself re ected there.

All things become possible when hearts

BISHOP TUTU, contd fxed in mutual contempt begin to grasp a trans-

orming truth; namely, that this person I earand despise is not an alien, something less thanhuman. This person is very much like me, andenjoys and su ers, loves and ears, wonders, wor-ries, and hopes. Just as I do, this person longs or

well-being in a world o peace.Gods dream begins with this mutual recogni-

tion we are not strangers, we are kin. It culmi-nates in the de eat o oppression perpetrated inthe name of security, and of violence in icted in

the name o liberation. Gods dream routs thecynicism and despair that once cleared the path

or hate to have its corrosive way with us, and orravenous violence to devour everything in sight.

Gods dream comes to ower when everyone who claims to be wholly innocent relinquishes

that illusion, when everyone who places absoluteblame on another renounces that lie, and whendi ering stories are told at last as one sharedstory o human aspiration. Gods dream ends inhealing and reconciliation. Its fnest ruit is hu-man wholeness ourishing in a moral universe.

In the meanwhile, between the root o humansolidarity and the ruit o human wholeness, there is the hard work o telling the truth.

From my experience in South Africa I know that truth-telling is hard. It has grave conse-quences or ones li e and reputation. It stretchesones aith, tests ones capacity to love, and

pushes hope to the limit. At times, the di fculty o this work can make you wonder i people are

right about you, that you are a ool.No one takes up this work on a do-gooders

whim. It is not a choice. One eels compelledinto it. Neither is it work for a little while, but rather or a li etime - and or more than ali etime. It is a project bigger than any one li e.This long view is a source o encouragementand perseverance. The knowledge that the work preceded us and will go on a ter us is a ountaino deep gladness that no circumstance can alter.

Nothing, however, diminishes the fear and

trembling that accompany speaking the truth topower in love. An acute awareness o allibility isa constant companion in this task, but becausenothing is more important in the current situa-tion than to speak as truth ully as one can, therecan be no shrinking rom testi ying to what one

sees and hears. What do I see and hear in the Holy Land? Some people cannot move reely rom one placeto another. A wall separates them rom their

amilies and rom their incomes. They cannottend to their gardens at home or to their les-sons at school. They are arbitrarily demeanedat checkpoints and unnecessarily beleagueredby capricious applications o bureaucratic redtape. I grieve or the damage being done daily to peoples souls and bodies. I have to tell thetruth: I am reminded of the yoke of oppressionthat was once our burden in South A rica.

I see and hear that ancient olive trees areuprooted. Flocks are cut off from their

pastures and shepherds. The homes o some peo-ple are bulldozed even as new homes or othersare illegally constructed on other peoples land. Igrieve or the land that su ers such violence, themarring o its beauty, the loss o its com orts, thedespoiling of its yield. I have to tell the truth: I

am reminded o the bitter days o uprooting anddespoiling in my own country.

I see and hear that young people believe thatit is heroic and pious to kill others by killingthemselves. They strap bombs to their torsos toachieve liberation. They do not know that libera-

tion achieved by brutality will de raud in the end.I grieve the waste o their lives and o the livesthey take, the loss o personal and communalsecurity they cause, and the lust or revenge that

ollows their crimes, crowding out all reason andrestraint. I have to tell the truth: I am reminded of the explosive anger that in amed South Africa, too.

Some people are enraged by comparisonsbetween the Israeli/Palestinian con ict and whathappened in South A rica. There are di erencesbetween the two situations, but a comparisonneed not be exact in every eature to yield clarity about what is going on.

Moreover, or those o us who lived throughthe dehumanizing horrors o the apartheid era,the comparison seems not only apt, it is alsonecessary. It is necessary i we are to persevere inour hope that things can change.

Indeed, because o what I experienced in

South A rica, I harbor a vast, unreasoning hopeor Israel and the Palestinian territories. South

A ricans, a ter all, had no reason to suppose thatthe evil system and the cycles o violence that

were sapping the soul o our nation would everchange. There was nothing special or di erentabout South A ricans to deserve the appear-ance o the very thing or which we prayed and

worked and su ered so long. Most South A ricans did not believe they

would live to see a day o liberation. They didnot believe that their childrens children wouldsee it. They did not believe that such a day evenexisted, except in antasy. But we have seen it.

We are living now in the day we longed or.It is not a cloudless day. The divine arc thatbends toward a truly just and whole society hasnot yet stretched ully across my countrys sky like a rainbow o peace. It is not fnished, it doesnot always live up to its promise, it is not per ectbut it is new. A brand new thing, like a dreamo God, has come about to replace the old story o mutual hatred and oppression.

I have seen it and heard it, and so to thistruth, too, I am compelled to testi y - i it canhappen in South A rica, it can happen with theIsraelis and Palestinians. There is not much

reason to be optimistic, but there is every reasonto hope.

    TO dO JUsTiCe

O n Tuesday November 6, 2007, afterhours o intense questioning, Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey assured the Judiciary Committee that he woulden orce a law to prohibit an interrogation torturetactic called water boarding. This statement cameon the heels o his re usal to characterize waterboarding as an illegal orm o torture. Sen. EdwardKennedy (D-Mass.) called Mukaseys assurancesperhaps the most stunning and hollow promisereportedly made by a nominee or attorney generalin my 45 years in the Senate.

Water boarding, as it is currently described, involves strapping a person to an inclined board,

with his eet raised and his head lowered. Theinterrogators bind the persons arms and legs so hecant move at all, and they cover his ace. In somedescriptions, the person is gagged, and some sorto cloth covers his nose and mouth; in others, his

ace is wrapped in cellophane. The interrogatorthen repeatedly pours water onto the persons ace.Depending on the exact setup, the water may or may not actually get into the persons mouth and nose;but the physical experience o being underneatha wave o water seems to be secondary to thepsychological experience. The persons mind believes

he is drowning, and his gag re ex kicks in as if he were choking on all that water alling on his ace.

As this country continues to employ old ways o torturing people (water boarding has been aroundfor 1500 years), they continue to nd new waysto torture through laws, and policies. From Jena,Louisiana, to West Virginia, to New York, to right

here on the streets o Chicago, the hypocrisy o the powers that be is un athomable. In the words

THE RESULTS OF A REDEEMED LIFE

    STEWARDS OF STRAnGERS

I especially would like to welcome a young amily man to our church, saidthe Deacon. I hope you enjoy us.

Man, I couldnt wait to change churches! replied John. The people at thechurch I le t were the coldest, stingiest bunch o do nothings ever! It musthave been hard to work with a group like that, sympathized the Deacon.

I wouldnt know, John answered. I never li ted a fnger or them; always wrangling and griping.

The Deacon placed his hand gently on his shoulder. John, I hope youll bepatient with us; Im a raid our church is a little like that, too.

The Deacon turned to welcome an elderly man who had come to our town tolive with his daughter. It is a pleasure to welcome a senior Christian; I hopethat you will enjoy our group.

I hope so, too, said Frank. I hated to leave my old church; they were such warm, caring people.

Ill bet you were really involved there, commented the Deacon. Yes, Iguess I tried everything, except preaching, smiled Frank. I enjoyed serving

those generous people, always working cheer ully together. The Deaconglowed, Frank, I am positive youll nd our church to be the same.

My heartfelt hope for the congregation in the year 2007 is that each member

will fully embrace what it means to be loved by a God who restores.God is a God of redemption and not a God of condemnation.
