JAMES 2:14-26 (NRSV)

14What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say

you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save

you? 15If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily

food, 16and one of you says to them, “Go in peace;

keep warm and eat your fi ll,” and yet you do not sup-

ply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17So

faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. 18But some-

one will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show

me your faith apart from your works, and I by myworks will show you my faith. 19You believe that God

is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and

shudder. 20Do you want to be shown, you senseless

person, that faith apart from works is barren?

21Was not our ancestor Abraham jus fi ed by works

when he off ered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see

that faith was ac ve along with his works, and faith

was brought to comple on by the works. 23Thus the

scripture was fulfi lled that says, “Abraham believed

God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,”

and he was called the friend of God. 24You see that

a person is jus fi ed by works and not by faith alone.25Likewise, was not Rahab the pros tute also jus -

fi ed by works when she welcomed the messengers

and sent them out by another road? 26For just as

the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without

works is also dead.

11:00 a.m.

JAMES 2:14-26 (THE MESSAGE)

14-17Dear friends, do you think you'll get anywhere

in this if you learn all the right words but never do

anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate

that a person really has it? For instance, you come

upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved

and say, "Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ!

Be fi lled with the Holy Spirit!" and walk off without

providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where

does that get you? Isn't it obvious that God-talkwithout God-acts is outrageous nonsense?

18I can already hear one of you agreeing by saying,

"Sounds good. You take care of the faith depart-

ment, I'll handle the works department." Not so fast.

You can no more show me your works apart from

your faith than I can show you my faith apart from

my works. Faith and works, works and faith, fi t to-

gether hand in glove.

19-20Do I hear you professing to believe in the one and

only God, but then observe you complacently sit-

ng back as if you had done something wonderful?

That's just great. Demons do that, but what good

does it do them? Use your heads! Do you suppose

for a minute that you can cut faith and works in two

and not end up with a corpse on your hands?

21-24

Wasn't our ancestor Abraham "made right withGod by works" when he placed his son Isaac on

the sacrifi cial altar? Isn't it obvious that faith and

works are yoked partners, that faith expresses itself

in works? That the works are "works of faith"? The

full meaning of "believe" in the Scripture sentence,

"Abraham believed God and was set right with God,"

includes his ac on. It's that mesh of believing and

ac ng that got Abraham named "God's friend." Is it

not evident that a person is made right with God not

by a barren faith but by faith frui ul in works?

25-26The same with Rahab, the Jericho harlot. Wasn't

her ac on in hiding God's spies and helping them

escape—that seamless unity of believing and do-ing—what counted with God? The very moment you

separate body and spirit, you end up with a corpse.

Separate faith and works and you get the same

thing: a corpse.

SHARING WHO WE ARE

KNOWING WHO WE ARE

Are we human beings “good” or “bad”? The answer is “both”. We have the poten al for great

righteousness and great evil, but most of us live somewhere in between. If, then, we are going

to make the season of lent a me of “sharing who we are”, what is it that we share?

Lent is a peniten al season and the Lenten color, purple, signifi es repentance. It becomes

distorted, though, if we seek it only as repentance. Many people give up something for Lent, a

favorite food or luxury, but what good is “giving up”, if we do not also “give to”? We need to add

something.

Let’s look at both of these. We do need to give up, get rid of those things that make our lives

less than their best. We need to turn ourselves around at mes, for we are fallible and o en

make misjudgments, pursuing wrong or inadequate goals. Be sorry and repent, at mes? Yes!

But, what parent would want a child to be constantly lamen ng his or her failings and endlessly

saying, “I’m sorry?” Parents and God seek a rewarding life, a produc ve life for those we love.

Lent calls us to fi nd our genuine, whole selves. In the process, we turn away from those thingsthat are counter-produc ve or unworthy, but we seek primarily to turn toward what has true

value. Who – really – are you? And, what could you become, with God’s guidance? There is a lot

of good in everyone, o en more than we give them credit for. We all have within us the seeds

that can produce beau ful growth.

Ge ng to know who we are – self-discovery – is a good thing to add to our Lenten observance. The objec ve, though, is not to draw up a balance sheet of the good and bad within us. It is

rather, an eff ort to “accentuate the posi ve and eliminate the nega ve.” We are called to be all

that we are able to be as God’s children.

Lenten Fast

We are calling for a period of prayer and fas ng for the en re church during the Season of

Lent, from Ash Wednesday (March 9, 2011) through Resurrec on Sunday (April 24, 2011).

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil and a er fas ng forty days and

forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these

stones to become loaves of bread.” Ma hew 4:1-3

Fas ng has been used throughout the ages to prepare the people of God for the great things God has in store

for them. As we pray through this season of transi on and Divine imagina on, I am calling, I am asking, I am

reques ng that the en re church become involved in some form of prayer and fas ng. The following are several

types of fasts that can be used to develop spiritual power and clarity.

Fast #1 - Fas ng to confront destruc ve forces

  March 9 – March 19 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.

March 20 - March 27 Eat only two meals a day before 6:00 p.m.March 28 – April 2 Eat only one meal a day

April 3 – April 9 Drink only juices, water and/or tea

A Word From the Pastor

The Top 9 Lamest Excuses for Not Fas ng

1. “If I fast I might die.”

2. “I can’t breathe; it’s too hard for me”.

3. “I will fast” – next year, never today.

4. Some fast for 3 meals then eat like “pigs’ and fall into bed to sleep it off ”.

5. Some feel that it’s enough to fast from bed me to breakfast.

6. Some people can’t func on without meat in their stomachs.

7. Some people fast for the wrong reasons.

8. Some people claim to fast to please others, but stop by McDonald’s on the way

home.

9. Some people don’t fast because they might be “misunderstood”

Where are you on this list?

Dear O s,There was once a me in this country when Black folks would work 12-hour days for less money than their White

co-workers who worked only eight. The key to leveling the playing fi eld for Black workers was collec ve bargaining

— and now Republicans around the country are a acking this basic right.

The right of workers to nego ate as a group for be er wages, benefi ts and working condi ons has been important

for everyone, but it's been especially meaningful for Black Americans. Before we could collec vely bargain, we hadli le control over our working condi ons and no protec on from racial discrimina on in the workplace.

That's why it's cri cal that we stand with the workers in Wisconsin,

Ohio, New Jersey, and everywhere else collec ve bargaining is coming

under a ack. Please join us in sending a message of support to all those

fi gh ng this ba le on the front lines. It takes only a moment: h p://act.

colorofchange.org/sign/workers

In Memphis in 1968, Black sanita on workers worked in dangerous,

inhumane condi ons under abusive White supervisors for li le pay.

A er two workers were crushed to death by a malfunc oning city

garbage truck, the city's Black sanita on workers sought to unionize.

They demanded be er wages, safer working condi ons, and the right to collec vely bargain for these things. They

took to the streets of Memphis bearing signs that read, "I am a man." During the strike, police a acked and jailed

Black workers for peaceful protest. Months later, Dr. Mar n Luther King, Jr., who said that "all labor has dignity,"

joined these workers on the front lines. He was assassinated while leading the eff ort to win collec ve bargainingrights for these workers.

Collec ve bargaining has helped Black workers vulnerable to workplace discrimina on win needed on-the-job

protec ons. “Black workers have an interest in unions as all workers do, because they give them power in the

labor market to improve working condi ons, and allow them due process and fairness on the job,” says labor

scholar Stephen Pi s. “Any sort of ins tu on that allows due process procedures and reduces arbitrary behavior in

decision making is posi ve for black folks.”

More than just protec on from discrimina on, collec ve bargaining has won Black workers fairness in pay and

advancement, access to health insurance and re rement savings, and basic worker safety protec ons. This is

especially true for Black public-sector workers. Twenty-fi ve percent of all Black college graduates work in the public

sector, and government work is second only to health and educa on services in concentra on of Black workers.

As scholar Michael Honey points out, "The one toe-hold many black and minority workers (and especially women

among them) s ll have in the economy is in unionized public employment.

A Word From the Pastor

Now, Republicans in state legislatures around the country are a acking public employees' collec ve bargaining

rights. The ba le began in Wisconsin, when Republican Governor Sco Walker off ered a bill that would strip

public employees of their collec ve bargaining rights. In response, thousands of regular people fi lled the state

capitol in protest — with many camping out there for days or even weeks. To stop the bill and force Republicans to

nego ate, 14 Democra c state senators le Wisconsin, (preven ng Republicans from vo ng on the bill). Despite

the overwhelming public opposi on to the bill, Republicans were eventually able to pass the law using procedural

tricks late last week. But the protesters in Wisconsin drew the world's a en on to this fi ght, and exposed the

a ack on collec ve bargaining rights as hugely unpopular and poli cally mo vated. And right now they're workingto hold Republicans accountable in powerful ways.

Wisconsin is one of many states where collec ve bargaining is under a ack. Republicans in Ohio just passed a law

similar to Wisconsin's, and states from Indiana to New Jersey are prepared to follow suit.

Republicans say that their eff ort to roll back collec ve bargaining rights is necessary to curb spending in mes of

economic hardship, but that just doesn't square with the facts. In no state are public employees' salaries or pension

benefi ts a major cause of their current fi nancial problems. The Republican eff orts are part of a strategy to a ack

public employees' unions, which overwhelmingly give money to Democra c interests. Without the strength of the

unions, many expect that President Obama and other Democrats will have a tougher me raising funds for the

2012 elec on.

DePaul University law professor Terry Smith says that, "Dismantling bargaining rights will dispropor onately aff ect

African Americans." This right has played a vitally important role in Black Americans' move into the middle class.

For Republicans, the economic well-being of Black folks (and all workers) is only collateral damage in a poli calba le. It's shameful.

That's why it's important that we stand with the brave workers around the country fi gh ng to preserve the right

to collec vely bargain in their states. They're on the front lines, and your message of support will help them keep

going even as circumstances get tougher. Please join us in telling these workers that you stand with them, and then

ask your friends and family to do the same.

Thanks and Peace,

THE RESULTS OF A REDEEMED LIFE

A family counselor’s favorite bit of advice is, “Love is a four-le er word, spelled “T-I-M-E.” She maintains

that the best way to prove your love for anyone is to spend me with them…and for them.

The greatest of all commandments is this, “Love the Lord, your God.” That, too, involves our me. Godloved us fi rst, the Bible records. It is good for us to remember that God proved His love by giving us His

me… me to share our sorrows; me to teach, me to pay the supreme sacrifi ce, me for everything we

needed. As always, God gave in generous measures.

How sad then, for us to give so li le me in return. We, of course, are the losers! “We are now stuck with

a sixty-minute God.” It would be another ma er if we did not need much of God’s company, or if this

world of ours did not require more loving acts of Chris an service. Everywhere, empty hearts and brokenlives beg silently for help. The sixty-minute God can hardly begin to deal with all these problems; but, the

real God can do it!

Spend some me where it counts. Spend some me in God’s presence to have your own empty heart

fi lled, and spend some me in God’s service, fi lling the needs of the people. “Charge them to do good, to

be rich in good works and generous, sharing what they have.” I Timothy 6:18.

May Timothy’s le er move us to be er see how we are using all that the Lord has entrusted to us; our

income, our talents. This sense of stewardship will help us grow in faith and concern for one another.

The Jus ce Watch Team Invites You to

THE HIGH HOPES COALITION’S STOP THE PUSH OUT

Saturday, April 2, 2011

11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.Roosevelt University

430 South Michigan, Chicago, Illinois

10th Floor Library

Community Speaker: Pastor O s Moss III

The Jus ce Watch Team of Trinity United Church of Christ is calling upon the congrega on to support the

High Hopes Campaign Coali on (HHCC). The coali on is raising the issue regarding the dispropor onate

number of black and brown children that are suspended or expelled from Chicago Public Schools. This

push out is the fi rst step to incarcera on, the pipeline to jail. The HHCC is calling for full implementa on

of restora ve jus ce prac ces in schools as a means for reducing the number of suspensions/expulsions.

The goal is to reduce the number of students being suspended/expelled by 40%.

• Restora ve jus ce is a way of bring community and its various stakeholders together to repair

harm and restore rela ons. Examples in schools include peace circles, peer juries and community

service. It has the poten al for teaching confl ict resolu on skills, building stronger rela onships and

providing alterna ve approaches to discipline.

• We need your support. Join the JWT, our Pastor and the HHCC at a public mee ng with the Chicago

Public School president on Saturday, April 2. Mayor-elect Rahm Emmanuel has been invited.

• We need at least 100 members to be in a endance.

• Those interested may sign up a er each service in the Atrium beginning today, Sunday, March 20,

2011. We are coun ng on you! We need your support!

every minute of my life dedicated to the needs of

friend from church, or even a neighbor. They come

to the aid of someone who needs help with errands,
