May 15, 2007 Congress has pledged $50 billion in

the budget or childrens health coverage through the

State Children Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)

reauthorization. SCHIP must be reauthorized by

September 30, 2007. SCHIP was a great bipartisan

achievement, and now is the time to strengthen it with

    a strong reauthorization bill.

A Republican Congress and a Democratic President

enacted the SCHIP program in 1997. Both Republi-

can and Democratic governors aggressively moved to

utilize the SCHIP funding and exibility to expand

coverage or children. Congress must help states fnish

    the job.

An SCHIP reauthorization bill should strengthen

the program, particularly by enabling states to cover

the millions o children eligible but not enrolled inSCHIP and Medicaid. The congressional pledge o

$50 billion for childrens health care needs to focus on

    improving Medicaid and SCHIP.

Timely SCHIP reauthorization will help ensure

coverage or children, as well as adequate and stable

resources or states. The ollowing elements are key to

    the reauthorization process:

    a. Dollars dedicated or childrens coverage can be

most efciently and most productively invested

in the SCHIP and Medicaid programs.

    b. Dollars rom Medicaid and SCHIP should not

be diverted in order to fnance the new monies

    promised to SCHIP.

    c. States need inc

    increase outreach and enrollment opportunities.

    d. States sh

or not to implement the mandatory Citizens

    Documentation Requirement Defcit Reduction

Act. States are now required to get two orms

o documentation in order to enroll potentially

eligible amilies or SCHIP and Medicaid,

thereby using already limited dollars or costly

    administrative tasks.

    e. Federal u

children in obtaining Medicaid and SCHIP

services should be restored. Prior to welare

reorm, legal immigrant children were eligible to

    enroll in Medicaid and SCHIP.

. The growiavailable and what states need simply to maintain

their current caseloads must be addressed in the

    reauthorization.

Congress must make health care or Americas

children a top legislative priority. I you care about

our children, you are asked on this Womens Day to

contact your members o Congress and urge them to

support SCHIP reauthorization legislation that offers

comprehensive, aordable, high quality health cover-

age or all children, with the necessary unds to do so.

To send a ax or e-mail message to your

representative on the SCHIP reauthorization, visit

To My Dear Trinitarian Family and Friends:

God, who reaches into everyones heart, knows how

thankul, grateul, and excited I now am to be a ully

engaged member o Trinity United Church o Christ. In

light o that, I would also like to take this opportunity to

congratulate and thank all Trinitarians who made TUCC

what it is today. Your welcoming spirit, since my frst visit

through the day I received the Right Hand o Fellowship,

was honorable and inspiring. THANK YOU ALL FOR

    THE WARM WELCOME!

I am deeply grateul to our Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Jer-

emiah A. Wright, Jr., Pastor Rev. Otis Moss III, and the

host o TUCC leadership, who by Gods help, devoted

their time in spiritual teaching (emphasizing both the Bib-lical and/or social context o our Arican traditions and

culture). Acknowledging that we live in a moment where

the church and the community are required to deliver

changes to its people, I see TUCC as one o the leading

Christian congregations demonstrating that principle, as it

engages in the living out of Gods plan.

Throughout my journey, which began 19 years ago in

Southern Sudan, Arica, I have observed and experiencedmany churches (and/or believers) worship and praise

God; but, very oten I ailed to understand how they

demonstrate Gods Love and work in their actual practices

    ater Sunday worship.

One o the biggest obstacles in every aspect o lie, be it

economically, socially, educationally, and/or spiritually, is

always the absence o knowledge and reedom to exercise

whatever God has given us and expect us to wisely use

those gits to the capacity we can and to the beneft o all.

But very oten, unortunately, we as human beings

end up in poverty, war, and man-made disasters, as some

of our own brethren fail to recognize God, or fail to

demonstrate Gods love. Instead, they misuse their power,

brandishing it over the powerless, the voiceless, and the

minority to ulfll their own earthly goals. I am convincedthat attending church, prayer, praising Him, and sharing

the Bible, are all very important. But, these practices

cannot ulfll Gods promises or desires i we remain silent

and do nothing or those who are in need.

As I grow, I have come to learn that we MUST always

look or knowledge, unity, and courage in order to rise as

a people and stand up or ourselves and our uture genera-

tions. Our desire should be similar to our beloved leaders,

Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Dr. Martin Luther King,

Jr., Dr. John Garang de Mabior o Sudan and the like,

each o whom lived by example and served so that we

    might have a better lie.

I thank Almighty God or bringing me to a congrega-

tion prepared or and transormed by, not only its prayers

to and worship o God, but also its commitment to and

demonstration o Gods love through tireless work withinthe church and within our collective global community.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, rom the bottom o

my heart, I believe that God does not want us to be silent

while our sisters and brothers living in the Diaspora are

    experiencing injustice, oppression, and discrimination,

let a lone the genocide, slavery, and mass displacement

which are now still active in the motherland and elsewhere

around the world. God wants us to love one another, careor the sick, shelter and/or eed the homeless and seek to

fnd ways to provide or those who have less.

Finally, I cannot end this message without recognizing

two o our own sisters. I would like to extend my appre-

ciation to Sis. Lynda Holiday Lawrence, who directed me

to Trinity United Church o Christ and to Ms. Dorothy

Riley, another Trinitarian, who frst told me about TUCC.

Above all, I thank God or bringing these two wonderul

people into my lie and establishing a riendship that has

    changed my lie.

With prayer, unity, understanding, love, hard work,

aith, and commitment, I wish you all a delightul return

o un, ellowship, learning, success, and growth!

money is geared toward military aid. This military

aid has not served to aid the crisis in Columbia, but

only served to deepen the distress o the millions

o people, including Aro-Columbians, who have

been displaced rom their homes in Columbia dueto violence.

WHINSEC/School of the Americas is a combat

training school or Latin American Soldiers, located

at Fort Benning, GA. Some have called this school

the school of the assassins. WHINSEC/SOA, in

no uncertain terms, trains Latin American soldiers

    in counterinsurgency, sniper training, commando

and psychological warare, military intelligence, and

interrogation tactics. Graduates o this school return

to their own countries and use these debilitating

techniques on their own people. SOA graduates

return to their countries and target educators,

reedom fghters, religious workers, and other who

work or the rights o the poor. In countries like

Columbia, many o those targeted by these gradu-

ates o the SOA have been tortured, assassinated,

raped, and orced into displeasure by those trained

    at the SOA.

The policy o the United States with regard

to Columbia has been one o eigning aid, whilepromoting destabilization. Through its nancial

support, and military support through schools

like WHINSEC/SOA, Columbia and other Latin

American countries have been the victims o a sick

and oppressive policy toward Columbia and Latin

America. The violence that has torn Columbia apart

disproportionately aects the rural poor, many owhom are Aro-Columbians. The time has come to

    change Americas policy toward Columbia.

Today and tomorrow, May 20th and 21st,thousands o aith communities across the United

States are participating in days o prayer and action

or Columbia, as they heed the call o Columbian

religious leaders for help in ending the 40-year civil

war that has torn the country apart. As you entered

the Sanctuary, you should have received a letter

addressed to Congressman Eliot Engel, WesternHemisphere Subcommittee Chairman o the House

Committee on Foreign Aairs. By signing this let-

ter, you can join other aith communities in de-

manding that the United States government alter its

policy toward Columbia, and call or an end to the

violence in that country unded by U.S. dollars.

THe ReSULTS OF A ReDeeMeD LIFesteadip Qote

I you want to live longer, give the other driver the right o way.

There will always be roses, but someone has to take care o them.

People who spend their time nding ault usually have little else to do.

A church member who eels no responsibility or his Church, does not really belong.

ACHIeVeMenT. My mother drew a distinction between achievement and

success. She said that achievement is the knowledge that you have studied and

worked hard and done the best that is in you. Success is being praised by others

and thats nice too, but not as important or satisying. Always aim or achieve-

ment and forget about success. (Helen Hayes) Thats a good denition of a

sense o stewardship toward our God-given time and talent.

CHILDRen AnD MOneY. Too oten we ail to understand that Christian

instruction about money is one o the best opportunities we have, to teach our

children about Gods love or us, and His ownership o all things. The way

we use money is the extension o our personal characteristics. By teaching our

children the Christian use o money, aording them control o money and the

need to make decisions about money, we also conront them with the meaning

    o discipleship and Christian stewardship.

GROWInG CHRISTIAnS. The Christian who trusts in Jesus Christ is grow-

ing daily, thinks in terms o Christs love and his blessings, receiving more than

they have ever been given or deserved, and the privilege o responding. Chris-

tians know that the grace o Christ enables an individual to look at his or her lieand rearrange priorities, making sacrifces here and there, so that increased giving

o money becomes possible out o seemingly unchanging fnancial sources.
