eXODuS 3:914 (The Message)9 The Israelite cry or help has come to me, and

Ive seen or mysel how cruelly theyre being

treated by the Egyptians. 10 Its time or you to go

back: Im sending you to Pharaoh to bring my

people, the People o Israel, out o Egypt.11Moses answered God, But why me? What

makes you think that I could ever go to Pharaoh

and lead the children o Israel out o Egypt?12Ill be with you, God said. And this will

be the proof that I am the one who sent you:

When you have brought my people out o Egypt, you will worship God right here at this very

mountain. 13 Then Moses said to God, Suppose

I go to the People o Israel and I tell them, The

God o your athers sent me to you; and they ask

me, What is his name? What do I tell them? 14

God said to Moses, I-AM-WHO-I-AM. Tell the

People o Israel, I-AM sent me to you.

    6:00 p.m.

eXODuS 4:12 (The Message)1 Moses objected, They wont trust me. They

wont listen to a word I say. Theyre going to say,

God? Appear to him? Hardly! 2 So God said,Whats that in your hand? A sta.

was a stranger, in the land o Canaan. 2 These are

the generations o Jacob. Joseph, being seven-

teen years old, was eeding the fock with his

brethren; and the lad was with the sons oBilhah, and with the sons o Zilpah, his athers

wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their

evil report. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than

all his children, because he was the son o his old

age: and he made him a coat of many colours.4

And when his brethren saw that their atherloved him more than all his brethren, they hated

him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his

brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

t the rst Watch Meeting Service on

December 31, 2007 (the seven oclock

service), no slips of paper were passed

out or our members to submit theirprayer concerns for the year 2008.

From Advent through Epiphany, members of

the United Church o Christ have observed the

incarnation in many ways through ruitul works

pleasing to God. I am particularly grateul or the

generosity that has surpassed our $100,000 goal of

support or Iraqi reugees orced to fee their homes

    by sectarian violence.

At the second Watch Meeting Service (the ten

oclock service), I asked our members to be sure

to spread the word to our members who had

worshipped at that rst service to bring their 2008

prayer concern (one prayer concern!) to church onthe rst Sunday of the New Year.

We had one variation in this years prayer

concerns. We asked members to please print their

names, print their addresses and print one prayer

concern (not three) for the year about which they

would like the pastors o this church to pray along

    with them.

Since we were broadcasting live on WVON for

our second Watch Meeting Service, we repeated the

request to those members who might have been

listening in at that hour. All o the members were

asked to please bring in one prayer concern i they

were at the rst service and did not get a chance toturn in a prayer concern as did the worshippers who

worshipped at the second Watch Meeting Service.

Some o our worshippers rom the rst Watch

Meeting service came expecting us to pass out

paper as we do on New Years Eve. I specically

asked you to bring in your prayer concern. I didnot make it clear that we would not be passing out

    slips o paper.

Because o that conusion, some members came

prepared to ll out a slip o a paper. Others brought

their concern in, but waited or a special oering

when those prayer concerns would be collected. I

    apologize or the conusion.

If you were at the rst service on December 31st

and did not hand in a prayer concern, please get a

slip o a paper rom an usher, print your name,

your address and one thing you want prayer or

in this New Year. We will collect those rst service

missed prayer concerns today on the thirdSunday o the year.

Pastor Moss has stressed prayer as the primary

spiritual ocus o the congregation or this year.

We want to pray with you. We ask or you to pray

    with us!

    Sincerely Yours,

Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

AFRICA ACTION STATEMENT ON THESUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN TO CLEAR

    LIBERIAS ARREARSNovember 15, 2007

    Arica Action welcomes the recent

    International Monetary Fund (IMF)

    announcement that the necessary

resources have been identied to clear

Liberias arrears, paving the way or ull debt

cancellation. This action is an important step

forward in the effort to achieve 100% cancellation

o Liberias illegitimate debts without harmul

economic conditions. The elimination o Liberias

arrears would not have happened were it not or

the sustained eorts by Arica Action activists

and others in the Jubilee USA Network to raisethis issue with the U.S Treasury Department and

Executive Directors of the IMF. The IMFs press

release noted that they had received a large volume

    o mailand Managing Director Dominique

Strauss-Kahn specically thanked all those who

have expressed their concerns about Liberias debt

situation. Their strong support to the cause o debt

relie contributed to the broad donor support that

made this nancing possible.Arica Action applauds

its constituents across the country that took action

    on this critical issue.

This breakthrough comes only a ew weeks ater

Arica Action released a press release and an actionalert inviting constituents to contact Key Executive

Directors at the IMF. The Jubilee USA Network,

the ONE Campaign and others subsequently

circulated the alert, generating tens o thousands

o responses. Arica Action alone generated over

11,000 messages on this issue. Previously this year,

Africa Action joined with the Jubilee USA Network

and others in an eort to collect Valentines Day

cards to the Treasury Secretary. Arican Action sta

assisted in the delivery of over 10,000 cards while

activists rallied outside the Treasury Department

in an eort to raise awareness o the devastating

impact o Liberias debt on the country.Liberias illegitimate debt was accrued as a result

o loans made largely to the brutal dictator, Samuel

Doe. Neither Doe nor his dictatorial successor,

Charles Taylor, made payments on these debts,

accumulating substantial arrears that have become

a barrier or Liberias eligibility or the Heavily

Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) Initiative. The

recent IMF payment on Liberias arrears opens the

door or debt cancellation, however, the reality

that Liberia will be orced to go through the HIPC

    process is disconcerting.

Arica Action has long critiqued this debt relie

scheme as insucient to resolve the debt crisis inArica. HIPC is riddled with harmul conditions

While the Trumpetmagazine is being trashed and taken through the cesspool o ugly

journalistic minds this week (in yet another attempt to discredit Barack Obama), Xernona

Wright and the Trumpetmagazine in a very dierent way than the way the Washington Post sees it!

On the second weekend o this month, Jeri and her magazine were given the SpiritualEnlightenment Award by the Trumpet Awards Foundation. Jeri was honored (along with Bishop

John Richard Bryant of the African Methodist Episcopal Church) for her outstanding contribution to

our people, our race, our history, our heritage and our culture.

This is a congratulatory note rom your church amily, Jeri. This is also a thank you note rom

your dad. Most importantly, this is a note rom a servant o God who wants to say to you publicly, I

thank God or you!I wish the entire congregation could have been in Atlanta with us as Ramah and I listened to Jeri

accept the award. She not only acknowledged me and my ministry. She not only acknowledged Dr.

Martin Marty who prodded me into having a church publication that dealt with the real world in

which the church sits. Jeri also acknowledged Reverend Barbara Allen.

Reverend Barbara Allen started the Trinity Trumpeton the rst Sunday of March in 1982. It was

my tenth anniversary git. Reverend Allen worked aithully with the Trumpetacross the years and

Jeri has taken it to a new level.

For your hard work, Jeri, we say thanks. For your faithfulness and your commitment, we say

thanks. For your integrity and your being willing to think outside of the box, we also say thanks

and we wish you Gods speed and Gods grace in this New Year.

    ramped-up smear campaign against the

UCCs largest congregation and U.S. Sen.

    Barack Obamas home church Trinity

UCC in Chicago has raised the ire o the Rev.John H. Thomas, the UCCs general minister

and president, who called the e-mail-driven claims

    absurd, mean-spirited and politically motivated.

Our national oces in Cleveland, as well as

other settings o the UCC, have been orwarded

countless e-mails that obviously derive rom asimilar source, Thomas said. They contain

    misleading statements obviously meant to

undermine the integrity o one o our most

    vibrant, mission-driven congregations.

Thomas said, while its not his intent to come to

the aid o Obama or any presidential candidate, he

does eel its imperative that absurd, mean-spirited

and politically-motivated attacks against one o our

    UCC churches be challenged orthrightly.

Obama, who is seeking the Democratic

nomination or president, has been a member o

    Trinity UCC for 20 years.

Since Obama won the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3,a furry o e-mail messages with identical language

and sentiment began circulating across the

internet, claiming that Trinity UCC was a racist

congregation because o its long-stated church

    motto: Unashamedly Black, Unapologetically

Christian.Trinity UCC is rooted in and proud o its

Arocentric heritage, Thomas said. This is no

dierent than the hundreds o UCC churches

rom the German Evangelical and Reormed

stream that continue to own and celebrate their

German heritage, insisting on annual sausageand sauerkraut dinners and singing Stille Nacht

on Christmas Eve. Recognizing and celebrating

    our distinctive racial-ethnic heritages, cultures,

languages and customs are what make us unique as

    a united and uniting denomination.

While Trinity UCC is predominately AricanAmerican, it does include and welcome non-Black

members. The Rev. Jane Fisler-Hoffman, Illinois

Conerence Minister, who is white, has been a

member o the congregation or years.

Trinity is a destination church or many

    members o the UCC, a multi-racial, multi-

cultural denomination that is largely Caucasian,

Thomas pointed out. When in Chicago, many

UCC members fock to Trinity to share in and

learn rom its vibrant ministries, dynamic worship

    and justice-minded membership. Contrary to

the claims made in these hateul emails, UCC

members know Trinity to be one o the mostwelcoming, hospitable and generous congregations

    in our denomination.

Trinity UCC was founded in 1961. Ten years

later, when the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright became its

pastor, the church had 87 families. Today, Trinity

UCC has more than 8,000 members, 70 ministriesand three Sunday worship services.

The circulating e-mails are written to appear as i they are coming rom a groundswell o persons, with

even manages to make the same mistakes. For example, each makes introductory reference to Trinity

creditors. It has been the conditions attached to loans and the prospect o debt relie through HIPC thathas made Aricas debt a new orm o slavery, denying Arican governments the economic sovereignty to

shape their economies to benet their citizens.

Africa Action notes that the IMF ha agreed to address Liberias arrears, but international creditors have

not come together to provide the immediate 100% debt cancellation that Liberia needs to successfully

emerge rom confict and provide or the basic human needs o its population. Liberias creditors must now

spirit Liberia through the process to ensure rapid and comprehensive debt cancellation without harmul

conditions. This initial victory must inspire activists to continue eorts to seek complete debt cancellation.Arica Action will accompany our Arican counterparts in Liberia on this path toward ull debt

cancellation, seeking an expedited process without harmul

economic conditions attached and working to protect

Liberia rom vulture unds. Liberia cannot aord to siphon

desperately needed resources to pay down an illegitimate

THE RESULTS OF A REDEEMED LIFE

    PROFILe IN STeWARDSHIP

There is no typical volunteer. People who donate their time are as varied as

    the jobs they do.

At 71, Ed Porter discovered that a leisurely retirement wasnt for him.

At his wies suggestion, Porter began volunteering at St. Marys Hospital in a

nearby suburb, updating their maintenance records.

Seven years later, Porter said, I get a lot out o my work at St. Marys, like the

personal satisaction o having a place to go, people to speak to and something

useul to do. It keeps me young.

By way of contrast, Trevor Ferrell was only 11 when he made national

headlines or helping the homeless. Moved by the plight o homeless people, he

saw on a television news report, Trevor took his own pillow and an extra blanket

and persuaded his ather to drive him to downtown Philadelphia, where he

handed the bedding to a man sleeping on a grate.

What began as a grassroots eort to help street people, ended with theounding o Trevors Place, a Philadelphia shelter or the homeless.

Youre never too old to be a volunteer, and it is never too late or too early to

start. Begin by seeing what you can do or your own church.

    TO dO JUsTiCe

In Luke 4:1819, our Lord and Savior reads

rom the scroll o the prophet Isaiah when

he says, The Spirit o the Lord is upon me.

For he has anointed me to bring good news to the

poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the

captives and recovery o sight to the blind, to let theoppressed go ree, to proclaim the year o the Lords

    avor.

Entering this new year, let us thank God

or our Senior Pastor who has sought to

faithfully serve for 36 years in the line of the

prophet Isaiah, Jesus the Christ, and Dr. MartinLuther King, Jr. Let us further thank God for

sending us a Pastor in the Rev. Otis Moss III,

who continues in that same prophetic line o

preachers, pastors, activist and reedom ghters.

What a blessing it is to be a part o a

Congregation which seeks to live out that

about which Jesus preached and taught. What a

blessing it is to be part o a congregation which

afrms who we are and Whose we are. For we

    are Unashamedly Black, and Unapologetically

Christian. What a blessing it is to be part o a

congregation that seeks to serve God by serving

Gods people. For we are a people who exaltthe Christ, embrace our culture, and engage our

community. What a blessing it is to be a part

o a Congregation that with Gods help, is not

araid to address injustice as a parish and as a

    people, locally, domestically, or internationally.

This weekend, we celebrate the lie o Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. whose prophetic

ministry sought to make social justice a reality.

Many, or their own political or privileged

benet, conne Dr. King to the last 3 minutes

of a speech at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963.

However, Dr. King was vilied for stating, I

knew that I could never again raise my voiceagainst the violence o the oppressed in the

ghettos without having rst spoken clearly to

the greatest purveyor o violence in the world

    today - my own government.

Dr. King also stated, Of all the forms of

inequality, injustice in health are among themost shocking and inhumane. As we arm

who we are as a congregation, we oer an

opportunity or ministry to you regarding the

healthcare system in Cook County. In an eort

to honor Dr. Kings memory and legacy, and

in an eort to be aithul to God by serving

Gods people, we oer you an opportunity

to advocate or a strong Cook County public

health system that provides quality health

services to all o Cook County. In addition to
