ISAIAH 40: 27-31 (KJV)
27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O
Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my
judgment is passed over from my God?
28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard,
that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator
of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is
weary? there is no searching of his
understanding. 29 He giveth power to the faint;
and to them that have no might he increasethstrength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be
weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall
renew their strength; they shall mount up with
wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be
weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

ACTS 16:1, 16-26 (NRSV)
1 Paul went on also to Derbe and to Lystra,
where there was a disciple named Timothy, the
son of a Jewish woman who was a believer; but
his father was a Greek.
16 One day, as we were going to the place ofprayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit of
divination and brought her owners a great deal of
money by fortune-telling. 17 While she followed
Paul and us, she would cry out, "These men are
slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to
you a way of salvation." 18 She kept doing th
for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed
turned and said to the spirit, "I order you in th
name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." Ancame out that very hour. 19 But when her
owners saw that their hope of making money
was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and
dragged them into the marketplace before the
authorities. 20 When they had brought them
before the magistrates, they said, "These men
disturbing our city; they are Jews 21 and are
advocating customs that are not lawful for us
Romans to adopt or observe." 22 The crowd
joined in attacking them, and the magistrates
them stripped of their clothing and ordered th
to be beaten with rods. 23 After they had give
them a severe flogging, they threw them into
prison and ordered the jailer to keep them
securely. 24 Following these instructions, he
them in the innermost cell and fastened their
in the stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silwere praying and singing hymns to God, and
prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly
there was an earthquake, so violent that the
foundations of the prison were shaken; and
immediately all the doors were opened and
everyone's chains were unfastened.

NATIONAL MARROW DONORPROGRAM DONOR DRIVE
August 9, 2005
Dear Friend,
As many of you are aware, in April 2002, Iwas diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphomaand multiple myeloma. Fortunately, followingchemotherapy, radiation and two bone marrow(stem cell) transplants, the diseases went intoremission.
Unfortunately, to extend my life, I needanother transplant. For the first twotransplants, I was able to donate my own stemcells. However, now I need a donor. OnSaturday, September 10th, the NationalMarrow Donor Program (NMDP) is assistingme in organizing a donor drive.
The NMDP is a nonprofit organizationcommitted to uniting potential volunteer
donors through a registry for patients in needof a life-saving transplant of marrow or bloodstem cells. Many of these patients have beendiagnosed with Hodgkins or non-Hodgkinslymphoma, multiple myeloma, breast cancer, leukemia, sickle-cell anemia or aplasticanemia.
Even though the registry includes more thanfour million donors, only 389,000 are African
American. That means that any AfricanAmerican requiring a donor transplant to livehas only a slim chance to none of finding amatch. That is due to the low number ofAfrican American donors on the registry. Forthose African American patients who survived
long enough for their doctors to even begin donor search, only 645 found a match.Statistics indicate 2
1/2times that number did
find a match, which means they more than
likely died.
Because of the tremendous need for minoritdonors ages 18 through 60, grant money ispresently available through the NMDPfoundation to cover the cost of being tested
joining the registry. The procedure is verysimple. It only requires a consent form andthirty seconds to draw a blood sample to betested to see if you are a match for me. You
may be the only person who can make this lsaving transplant possible. If youre identifas a match and consent to donate marrow orstem cells at that time, all medical costs arepaid for by me or my insurance company. IYOU ARE NOT A MATCH FOR ME, YOSTILL WILL BE REGISTEREDNATIONALLY IN THE EVENT A FAMILMEMBER OR FRIEND OF YOURS NEEDA DONOR.
I implore you to assist me and the NMDP inmission of saving lives by supporting a dondrive for me:Saturday, September 10, 20059:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m.Northern Trust Bank 2nd Floor7801 S. State StreetChicago, Illinois

HOW MANY LIVESWILL IT TAKE?
On the day that we left for Nigeria and
Ghana (August 8th), there were 1825 deadsoldiers who served under the American flag.Young American boys and girls were killedbecause they were sent by their Commander-in-Chief to find weapons of mass destructionthat did not exist. How many lives will it take?
That stark number of American deaths- needless deaths- becomes even moreterrifying when you stop to think about the factthat the Commander-in-Chief knew that therewere no weapons of mass destruction. Thoseyoung American boys and girls were sent totheir death on a pack of lies. How many liveswill it take?
At least 50% of the nation stares indisbelief at the number of needless deaths. Therest of the world looks on incredulously andsometimes even laughs at us because we havesent our children to die on a lie! How manylives will it take?
The novelist, E. L. Doctorow, has
written some chilling words about the currentCommander-in-Chief and his understanding ofdeath and this war. He writes:
This president does not know whatdeath is. He hasnt the mind for it. You seehim joking with the press, peering under thetables for the weapons of mass destruction hecant seem to find.
You see him at rallies, strutting up tothe stage in shirtsleeves to the roar of thecarefully screened crowd, smiling and waving,
triumphant, a he-man. He does not mourn. He doesnt understand why he should
mourn. He is satisfied during the course of thespeech (written forhim) to look solemn for amoment and speak of the brave youngAmericans who made the ultimate sacrifice for
their country. But you study him. You look into h
eyes and you know he dissembles an emotiowhich he does not feel in the depths of hisbeing because he has no capacity for it. Hedoes not feel a personal responsibility for th2,000 dead young men and women whowanted to be All That They Could Be!
How many lives will it take for theCommander-in-Chief to wake up? How malives will it take for America to wake up?
Those almost 2,000 dead youngAmerican men and women come to the deskthe Commander-in-Chiefnotas youngsterswith mothers and fathers.
They dont cross his desk as men wwives and children who will suffer to the enof their days without daddy (or mommy). TCommander-in-Chief doesnt see their needdeaths as being the start of a vicious cycle ffamily that cannot be consoled because of aaborted life - - a life aborted because of a lieabout weapons of mass destruction!
No! The 1825 dead young Americacome across the Commander-in-Chiefs desas a political liability. That is why the presnot permitted to photograph their coffins asthey arrive from Iraq. E. L. Doctorow asksabout the president: How then can he mouTo mourn is to express regret and he regretsnothing.
How many lives will it take before Bush doctrine is discarded and impeachmbegins? We have one month left in this lonhot summer. How many lives will it takebefore you as a Christian, a follower of the
Prince of Peace, rise up and do somethingabout this insanity?

Bishop T.D. Jakes MegaFest called mega-snub to Black Press
By Maynard EatonThe Atlanta Voice
(August 2, 2005)-Talk is cheap and, apparently, so too is renowned televisionminister Bishop T. D. Jakes. In June, Jakes, who has been dubbed Americas BestPreacher by TIMEmagazine, pledged apartnership with the National NewspaperPublishers Association (NNPA), a federation ofmore than 200 Black newspapers.
But when his MegaFest 2005, one of thelargest religious conferences ever, rolls intoAtlanta this week with an estimated 150,000people in attendance not one single dime willhave been spent with Atlantas Black Press.
We got nothing; hes not spending anythingwith Black newspapers, says Cheryl Mainor, advertising and marketing director for TheAtlanta Voice.
The appeals for advertising from the likes ofrobust publications such as the Voice, theAtlanta Daily World, the Atlanta Inquirerandthe six other Black-owned metro Atlantanewspapers fell on deaf ears despite Jakeshaving said recently at the NNPAs ChicagoConvention, Today is the beginning ofreconciliation between the Black church and
the Black Press.
Im not surprised at anyone who gives lipservice to supporting the African Americanpress financially. Its disheartening because thesnub is coming from one of the most
charismatic ministers to come along in mylifetime, says Jim Washington, publisher othe Dallas Weeklyand president ofThe AtlVoice. We have a history of people whohappen to look like us that support what westand for, appreciate the service we provideand read our paper, but who disappear whencomes down to putting their money where tmouth is. Its a legacy of ignorance.
While other media outlets including blackowned and blackformatted radio got paidadvertising black newspapers were onlyoffered free tickets to MegaFest entertainme
events in exchange for their advertising spaNNPA President John Smith, publisher of thInquirer, found that slight to be insulting boto his membership and, particularly, to hisAtlanta contemporaries. He is fuming.
As far as MegaFest is concerner, they onlycome to us for PR; everything else is anafterthought, Smith complains. For the mpart, in a commercial venue and in terms of
having a whole marketing plan for the blackentrepreneurs and business people, that is nhappening. They come into our communitieand for the most part, they leave us as aneconomic island.
Smith also says that Bishop Jakes cannot pathe buck nor plead ignorance to this issue. This has been brought to Bishop Jakesattention. He is aware of it because I talked
him myself.

WEVE BEEN CHOSEN
RESPONSIBLE STEWARDSHIP
The old testament refers to the ancientHebrews as a chosen people. But that dimean God liked them better than any otherpeople. It meant they were chosen for aresponsibility! The responsibility was to bGods people. This involved living in arelationship with God. It included worshipsacrifice and obedience to God. When theystrayed from this mandate to live as Goddesired, prophets called them back to their
responsibilities.
As Christians, we too are chosen for aresponsibility. We, as the body of Christ, are to be helping, not hindering, the kingdof God. We pray for this in the Lordsprayer. But how can we work on such adaunting task? We do it individually andcollectively. We do it in many small waysand perhaps in a few large ways.
God has given us the equipment. In fact, everything we have comes from God. Thequestion then is how best to use Gods giftsAnd thats exactly where responsiblestewardship enters the picture. Time, ideasabilities, talents, gifts, caring service, prayeactions and love are just some of the giftsfrom God we can use. God has alreadytouched our lives and will guide us. Theresponse of good, wise stewardship is up to
We have been chosen.
