    LUKE 5: 12-16 (NRSV)

12 Once, when he was in one of the cities, there was a man covered with leprosy. When he

saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the

ground and begged him, "Lord, if you choose,

you can make me clean." 13 Then Jesus

stretched out his hand, touched him, and said,

"I do choose. Be made clean." Immediately the

leprosy left him. 14 And he ordered him to tell

no one. "Go," he said, "and show yourself to

the priest, and, as Moses commanded, make an

offering for your cleansing, for a testimony to

them." 15 But now more than ever the word

about Jesus spread abroad; many crowds would

gather to hear him and to be cured of their

diseases. 16 But he would withdraw to deserted

    places and pray.

    I JOHN 4:18-21 (NRSV)

18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love

casts out fear; for fear has to do with

punishment, and whoever fears has not reached

perfection in love. 19 We love because he first

loved us. 20 Those who say, "I love God," and

hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for thosewho do not love a brother or sister whom they

have seen, cannot love God whom they have

not seen. 21 The commandment we have from

him is this: those who love God must love their

    brothers and sisters also.

    I SAMUEL 8:1-8 (NRSV)

1 When Samuel became old, he made his so

judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstbo

son was Joel, and the name of his second,

Abijah; they were judges in Beer-sheba. 3 Y

his sons did not follow in his ways, but turn

aside after gain; they took bribes and perver

justice. 4 Then all the elders of Israel gather

together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5 a

said to him, "You are old and your sons do follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a

king to govern us, like other nations." 6 But

thing displeased Samuel when they said, "G

us a king to govern us." Samuel prayed to th

LORD, 7 and the LORD said to Samuel,

"Listen to the voice of the people in all that

they say to you; for they have not rejected y

but they have rejected me from being king o

    ACTION-CALL FOR FAIR

    COURT PROCESS

    Dear Trinity Member,

In response to the July 1resignation announcement of SupremeCourt Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, theUCC 25th General Synod in Atlanta, GA,approved an emergency resolution calling

for President Bush and the Senate toengage in a bipartisan process ofmeaningful consultation in nominating thenext Supreme Court Justice.

The Synod resolution expressesappreciation for Justice O'Connor'sbalanced jurisprudence and moderatingleadership and calls attention to the

significance of this nomination at a timewhen the country is deeply divided. Thisresolution urges the President and theSenate to set aside the politics ofconfrontation and division, and insteadpursue consensus.

Justice O'Connor's resignationcreates a vacancy on the Supreme Courtfor the first time in over 11 years. Her

replacement will be appointed for life awill be given the responsibility ofinterpreting our nation's constitutionalrights. Given the Supreme Court's role iprotecting the rights and liberties of allAmericans, a thorough and deliberateprocess of consultation and confirmatioessential.

    The "advise and consent clause"

the Constitution makes the President anSenate partners in the appointment andconfirmation of federal judges. ThePresident's meeting with congressionalleaders on July 12th was an encouragingstep in the process of consultation, and to be applauded.

Your voice is needed to encouraPresident Bush and the Senate to engaga process of consultation that is thorougfair and beyond reproach. It is onlythrough such a process that a consensusnominee will emerge who is independenof ideological bias and committed toprotecting the rights, liberties and freedoof all Americans.

ANOTHER SENATE "SLICKIE"TO BENEFIT THE RICH!

Before Congress adjourns for itsAugust break, the Senate leadership wantsto eliminate the estate and gift tax, a taxthat only applies to the wealthiest 1.4percent of U.S. families. With scheduledchanges in exemption limits, the tax willonly apply to the wealthiest 0.3 percent ofU.S. families by 2009. The House has

already passed legislation eliminating theestate tax (H.R. 8).

Exemptions in the estate taxalready make it virtually certain thatfamily farmers, homeowners and mostupper-income asset holders will never payinheritance taxes. Today, estates valued atless than $1.5 million ($3 million for acouple) can be passed on tax-free.

By 2009, only estates exceeding$3.5 million ($7 million for couples) willbe subject to the estate tax. At this level, according to the Urban Institute, only8,500 estates in the entire country (just 65of which are farm estates) will be subject

to the estate tax by 2011 when someonedies and leaves an estate to heirs.

Eliminating the estate tax also h

negative impact on giving to churches, charities, educational institutions andfoundations. The Congressional BudgeOffice has shown that if the current estatax had been repealed in 2000, U.S.charities would have lost $13 to $25billion in donations in that one year alon

The estate tax is our most fair anprogressive tax, because it taxes only th

who are already wealthy and have theability to pay. It also provides neededrevenues at a time when Congress is facnearly $45 billion in cuts to programsfunding critical needs in the next 5 yearand even deeper cuts in the future.

It appears that some people are finally beginning to wake up and smell the oil.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone told BBC radio last week that Western intervention inthe Middle East since the end of WWI was motivated by a desire to control the flow

oil. According to Livingstone, Under foreign occupation and denied a right to vote,

denied the right to run your own affairs . . . I suspect that if it had happened here in

England we would have produced a lot of suicide bombers ourselves . . . But I don't ju

denounce suicide bombers. I denounce those governments which use indiscriminate

slaughter to advance their foreign policy.

The double standard spoken of by Mayor Livingstone is just another example o

what Dr. Marimba Ani calls Rhetorical Ethic. Rhetorical Ethic, according to Dr. An

defined as: culturally structured European hypocrisy. It is a statement framed in terms

acceptable moral behavior towards others that is meant for rhetorical purposes only. It

purpose is to disarm intended victims of European cultural and political imperialism. I

meant for export only. It is not intended to have significance within the culture. Its

essence is its deceptive effect in the service of European power.

This rhetorical ethic empowers Bush and Blair to claim to denounce terrorism

while refusing to look in the mirror and at the Downing Street Memo to see how they

have infected the world with a virus of hate and evil. The Downing Street Memo show

how they intentionally fixed facts and intelligence (or stupidity, depending on how y

view it) in order to make themselves a war, resulting in over hundreds of thousands de

    Americans and Iraqis.

Please do not be fooled by the games these people are playing. It is no more th

    rhetorical ethic.

    STEWARDSHIP

    STEWARD OF HOPE

The most exciting lesson onStewardship that I learned didnt come from abook, but from old Mark Bright. Mark, aliving example of Christian joy, alwaysseemed to find life a great adventure. Untilarthritis caught up with him, Mark wasalways the most willing volunteer in hischurch, able somehow to make difficult jobsreadily accomplished. Mark taught me:Christians are stewards of hope. We are thestewards of tomorrow.

Daily, I become more impressed withthe truth of Marks teaching. The world today

seems so filled with greed, cynicism, despairand hardness of heart that the few people whoface tomorrow courageously are a light in thedarkness. I wish I could say that all of thosecourageous people were Christians, but Icannot since God chooses to do some of Hiswork through unbelievers. I wish I couldclaim the antithesis, namely that all theChristians I have met are courageous. Icannot, because some are a faint spark whereothers are a flame.

However, it seems to me thatChristians, as a group, are more hopeful, more cheerful, more courageous in facingtomorrow than the other people of this world. For Christians, there is always a Tomorrow, for we have an understanding and forgivingGod. Our hope is to be a blessing to theworld for Christ.

When we strive to be better stewardsfor Christ, we should remember to guard,

nurture and share our greatest treasure -Christians are stewards of hope. We arestewards of tomorrow.
