When you need to buy something right away, youdo the best you can to find what you want at a goodprice. But with most items, it’s possible to time yourpurchase to when you’re more likely to get a real deal.

Here are some suggested times to buy:Vacuum cleaners — Shop for older models just in

time for spring cleaning.Air conditioners — anytime between October and

March, before new models arrive in early spring.Camping, hiking, biking and outdoor equipment

— Shop just as the newest gear hits the stores in Janu-ary and February.

Cars and trucks — Many people believe that thebest time to buy a car is at the end of the month, whensales personnel are desperate to meet their quotas.Instead, consider shopping for a car at the beginningof the month when the quota meter is reset to zeroand sales staff hope to get a jump on filling thatmonth’s quota.

Cameras — Keep an eye out for new models com-ing out — and buy an older model.

Airline tickets — Book your flight at least 21 daysin advance, but less than three months ahead of time. However, if you’re buying tickets for your family’sannual vacation, don’t play the waiting game for toolong. Consult a travel agent early to nail down yourbest price, especially if you’ll also need a rental carand accommodations at the other end.

Appliances — look for sales in September andOctober. Negotiate for free delivery and setup, as wellas taking the old item away.

Furniture — The best times to buy are Februaryand August, when showrooms are cleared for newfurniture after the holidays.

Gym memberships — It’s true that you’ll get thebest deals in December and January as people gearup for their New Year’s resolutions. But if there’s agym near you, approach them at any time to ask fortheir best possible deal. They might surprise you.

As always, do your homework before you buy.Make comparisons. Look online for competitor pric-ing and coupons.

The biggest way to save money is to plan ahead: Ifyou know your window air conditioner likely won’tmake it through another summer, start looking now.Don’t wait until July, when prices will be high andstock low.

• “We keep our sandbox covered when it’s not inuse. We have had two covers made of lattice that workedwell, but the wood breaks down quickly with use, andthey have to be replaced. I finally got smart and de-cided to cover the cover. I used a vinyl tablecloth thatwas colorful, and I stapled the fabric to the lattice. Now it not only keeps out animals, it also keeps outrain and leaves. It’s sturdier than just fabric alone, andit looks much better.” — A.A., via e-mail

• I have two driving teens now, and they both sharea car with me. Gas money (and maintenance costs)got to be a problem, but not anymore. There’s an odom-eter log in the car, and my kids pay by the mile. Thatcharge covers gas, oil changes and tires, and even in-surance. If driving styles matched personali-ties, David Ragan couldn’t possibly beerratic.

The second-generation driver — fa-ther Ken drove in major NASCARraces duringthe 1980s —

fell from 13th in 2008 Sprint Cup points to 27thin 2009. The driver some predicted might makethe Chase if he could move up just one posi-tion, instead fell 14 spots.

Ragan, still just 24 years old, can’t under-stand it either.

No one in NASCAR seems more calm andunflappable than Ragan, who is from Unadilla,Ga.

“I spent a lot of nights wondering what’sgoing on,” he said. “I guess it’s just that South-ern man, or Southern guy, in me. Maybe it’smy granddad rubbing off on me.

“A quick story: I was with him one day andwe ran out of gas. I asked, ‘What are we goingto do? Are we going to get some gas?’ It was15 years ago. We didn’t have a cell phone then.

“He said, ‘Nah, I’m going to take a nap.Somebody will come by in a little while.’ Henever worried about much.”

In one sense, though, the laidback style is justa front.

“There were times when I was sick at mystomach, so much that I couldn’t eat supper,”Ragan said. “We just couldn’t run any betterthan 25th, and I remember when we’d come tothe race track in 2008, and I’d make more mis-takes than I should have, and we’d run 12th. Itwas frustrating, but I’m a man, and I can admitit when I do things wrong. (Owner) Jack Roushis a man, and he can admit it when things arenot right on the performance side, and by be-ing honest, we can work together and fix it.”

Ragan knows he has to regain his form this year. “It’s prettysimple,” he said. “We’ve got to win races in 2010.

“We’ve got to be competitive, from the short tracks to the mile-and-a-half tracks to the (restrictor-plate) tracks, so I’m pretty ex-cited about going to Daytona. We’re ready to go.”

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have varicose veinson both of my legs. I wear only long dresses andslacks to hide them. My legs don’t hurt, but I wouldlike to be rid of these veins. What can I do forthem? At this point, I am not interested in surgery.— L.H.

ANSWER: Leg veins face a Herculean task. They have to return blood to the heart in the faceof gravity, which works to keep blood from mov-ing upward. They couldn’t accomplish their taskif they didn’t have valves. As blood moves up-ward in the vein, its valves close so that it can’tfall back down. The problem with varicose veinsis a valve problem. Their valves no longer work.Blood stays in the leg veins, distends them andstretches them out of shape — varicose veins.

Varicose veins can make the legs ache or causethem to tire quickly. Sometimes, the pooled bloodleaks fluid out of the veins, so the ankles and feetswell, and open ulcers — most often around theankle — might form. And then there is the cos-metic aspect, about which I’m not qualified tocomment.

Things you can do for varicose veins are lim-ited but worth trying. One is compression stock-ings. The very best stockings are the ones withgraduated compression, with the compressive

New Ways to TreatVaricose Veins

force greatest in the lowermost partof the leg and with lesser force in the upper partsof the leg. Compression moves blood upward.Another way to keep blood from pooling is lyingdown with your legs higher than your heart. Thatposition empties blood out of leg veins. Admittedly, you can’t spend the entire day with your legs el-evated, but elevate them as often as you can. Neverstand for long in one place. If you have to stay still, contract your calf and leg muscles to push bloodout of the legs.

Should you change your mind about surgicalvein removal, you should know that today thereare many methods of getting rid of these veins.Endovascular lasers, radiofrequency catheters andsclerotherapy are recent-vintage techniques. Sur-gical removal has been refined to the point that mostpatients return home on the day of operation.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have mucus that

drains down into my mouth and throat constantly.I hope you can offer some help for me. — H.E.

ANSWER: You’re describing postnasal drip, theirksome trickling of mucus into the back of themouth and throat. It is thick, gluey and tastes aw-ful. The mucus often comes from chronically in-fected sinuses.

Try saltwater irriga-tion of the nose to clearup some of this mucus.Boil some water, andinto a cup of boilingwater add a quarter-tea-spoon of salt. Let thewater cool. With a bulbsyringe, available in

NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson

• To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides withtoothpicks. This will eliminate the need to sliceoff a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-outportion. It works well for most types of cakes.

Even if we exercise regularly, too many hours infront of the television can be detrimental to ourhealth. There’s apparently a link between watchingtelevision and dying of cardiovascular disease.

The culprit? Sitting. Apparently while we’re sittingthere, our bodies are mishandling fats and sugarsfrom our diet. There’s a link between musclemovement and “lipoprotein lipase” in thebloodstream. Not using muscles allows that enzymeto temporarily shut down, which in turn lets more ofthe bad cholesterol get a foothold in thebloodstream. This is true, even if we’re notoverweight.

According to the Australian Diabetes, Obesityand Lifestyle Study, if we watch more than fourhours a day of television, we’re 46 percent morelikely to die, period. We’re 80 percent more likely todie of cardiovascular disease than people who sitin front of a television for less than two hours a day.The more hours, the more risk.

The study ran for 10 years, and the average ageof the participant was 50 years old.

The people in the study said they alreadyexercised a half hour or more per day. What arewe to do, then? Getting out of the recliner seemsto be the only answer. A treadmill in the living roommight not be lovely for the decor, but when it comesto saving our health, it could help. Even standingup and lifting a few hand weights while watchingtelevision could be beneficial.

There’s an additional dilemma here: If it’s “sitting”that causes the problem, then television can’t bethe only culprit. What about people who sit atcomputers for a living? Or customer-service peoplewho are hooked to a headset (while sitting in achair) for eight hours a day?

One way or the other, we have to find ways tomove more than we do.

Bad Smell Often Indicates IllnessDEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Scraps,” an 8-year-old Lab-collie mix, has

a rather embarrassing problem. He has a lot of smelly gas, and when he elimi-nates, well — his poo smells. Like, to the point that I have to look away when Ipick it up because my eyes water. Is this normal? Is there a way to stop this? —Melanie T., via e-mail

DEAR MELANIE: You should take Scraps to the veterinarian for a completecheckup, and be sure to mention every delicate detail of his poop and his gassiness.Bring notes to help you remember, in particular: Does the smell have a particularodor? How often is Scraps gassy? Have you noticed a pattern between, for ex-ample, when he eats and when he gets gassy? Does his poop always smell? Whatcolor is it? Is it firm or runny? (Bring a small sample with you, in a plastic bag orspecimen cup.)

The reason I want you to consult the vet first is that smelly elimination is oftenthe first indicator of an illness. The illness may be minor and easy to treat orrecover from, but it also may be more serious and need immediate medical atten-tion. Only your vet can say for sure.

If Scraps’ problem is not major, then the vet may recommend some changes inhis diet. If he eats table scraps or gets into the garbage often, stop both of thosebehaviors. (Table scraps are often higher in fat than is recommended for pets, andgarbage — well, you may have no idea what he’s ingesting.) A supplement or

medication also might be rec-ommended, and if Scraps hasa weight problem, the vet willrecommend a diet to help himshed a few pounds.
