Do You Believe in Miracles?

Broadcaster Al Michaels made those words famous at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. In the semi-final round of men’s ice hockey, he uttered that phrase as a plucky, young American team defeated the hockey goliath from the Soviet Union. The game was tape delayed, during an era long before the information age. Meaning that most Americans did not see the event live. Still, news quickly spread and the Al Michael’s statement, “Do you believe in miracles?” was known in every home.

Chanukah has always been the holiday when we speak of miracles. For generations children have heard the mythical tale of the oil that miraculously lasted for eight days until fresh oil could arrive. While the story of the oil was created centuries after the event, it echoes implausible events at the heart of Chanukah. The smaller Maccabee force defeated the Syrian-Greek army of Antiochus. Vastly outnumbered, they managed to use their wits and courage to outmaneuver their foes. The resulting miraculous victory gave Jews religious freedom.

What is a miracle? Some might answer it is a supernatural event, one in which the hand of God visibly alters events – like the parting of the Red Sea. That answer does not capture the whole of what a miracle truly represents. A miracle, a nes in Hebrew, is a time when the previously unthinkable occurs. It is a moment when the outcome of an event defies our expectations, because somehow the people involved manage to accomplish tasks we did not think they were capable of doing.

At Chanukah, there is no visible presence of God altering events on the field of battle. Yet somehow, the Maccabees find the courage, wisdom, and strength needed to defeat their foes. That truly was a miracle, in the same way that the improbable American victory at Lake Placid was a miracle. Especially given that the Soviets crushed the Americans 10-3 just weeks before the Olympics.

Even today, we are surrounded by miracles. It is a miracle that after thousands of years, many of those displaced and oppressed, the people Israel remain alive today. It is a miracle that we live in a society where we have the freedom to practice and express our Judaism as we want to. It is a miracle every day when we wake up to a world full of technology that makes our lives better, keeps us healthy, and lets us stay connected to those we love.

This Chanukah, give thanks for the miracles all around us, as well as the freedom to celebrate those miracles. Display your chanukiah proudly in the window – as a symbol to all who pass by that you believe in miracles.

May your Chanukah be filled with light, joy, laughter and miracles.

It’s Never Too Late to Become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah!Did you miss the opportunity to become a bar or bat mitzvah at the age of 13? Have you always wanted to study with clergy and become a more literate Jew? Would you like to learn to read and chant from the Torah? Are you willing to make a commitment of time to the exploration of your own Jewish identity with a small group of like-minded adults? If you’ve answered “Yes!” then our Adult B’nai Mitzvah Program may be for you.

Usually occurring when a young woman or man turns 13, the Bar or Bat Mitzvah is the point of being accepted as a son or daughter of the commandment; a responsible adult into the Jewish community. Many of you have been involved with your children or grandchildren becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah, yet you may not have had the pleasure and privilege of being called to the Torah. Perhaps it’s time to give yourself a unique, unforgettable gift—Jewish knowledge!

Adults who missed out on this ritual can have another opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to Judaism. The whole process of a person becoming B’nai Mitzvah as an adult is an amazing experience, for the students, their teachers, their families and the entire congregation. Together we can share in a journey of faith that starts in a deeply personal place of yearning for knowledge and connection and reach a place of heightened spirituality and a profound sense of accomplishment. For adults, becoming a B’nai Mitzvah can be a very rich and inspiring experience. You will have the opportunity to learn something in a more conscious way and apply it in your adult lives.

Starting this spring, we will begin meeting weekly for several months. I will create a study plan that will enable you to become readers of Torah, culminating in a wonderful ceremony where you will be called to the bimah as a Bar/Bat Mitzvah! If you are interested in this wonderful opportunity and gift to yourself, please be in touch with me ASAP. I will create a schedule around those who would like to be involved. I look forward to hearing from you! [email protected] or 239-455-3030 ex. 207

As Chanukah is approaching we think of the miracle of the oil burning for eight days when it seemed as though it would only last for a day or two. Chanukah is all about miracles, freedom and celebration.

Do you know what else is about miracles, freedom and celebration? Our children. As they grow and experience new things for the first time, we marvel at their innocence as we watch our little miracles, these gifts of life. They begin life with true purity and the freedom of being uncensored and unblemished by outside thoughts and prejudices. They are completely free to express what’s on their minds and how they are truly feeling, something that we, as adults, often lose sight of. And, who knows better how to celebrate life than our children. They embrace everything with wonder and joy, and they want us to share their joy as well. Our children feel free to express their joy out loud with giggles and laughter, sometimes at the wrong moments, and we find ourselves giggling right along with them. How often do we share something that our child has said that is just so cute and innocent?

Our children are truth. They say what they mean and they

mean what they say. If we listen closely we can learn great lessons and truth about life from our children. They want uncomplicated and simple explanations to their questions. I learned this from my 2nd graders recently. Shortly after announcing my retirement to the Congregation many of the students wanted to know why I was leaving, so I decided to speak to all of the students during Kehillah. The children sat quietly as I told them the story of how I became a Religious School Director and now, after 30 years, it was time for me to retire and a new Director would come to Temple Shalom. Some had questions and others were sad and many gave me hugs.

The 2nd graders really touched my heart that day. Later that morning Ms. Gloria asked if the class could come take a tour of my office. The class came in and the children handed me a huge card that had beautifully written and loving messages from each of them. Each read his or her message to me and gave me a hug. I felt their love and genuine truth as they expressed their concern about me leaving and had questions about who the next Director would be. I think you would agree that our children are all about miracles, freedom and celebration.

Happy Chanukah and a very Happy New Year!

b’nai mitzvah mazel tov to: Hanah SamuelDecember 13, 2014My parents are Tammy Strohl-Samuel and Darren Samuel and I have a younger brother, Nathan. I attend Community School Of Naples. I was a member of the CSN Middle School Volleyball Team for the past two years and enjoy soccer, running, bicycle riding, skiing, skating, music and playing with my dog and cat. For my Mitzvah project, I volunteered my time at the Humane Society in the Teen/Parent Feline Club. I will be collecting food, supplies and donations for the shelter on the Friday night service before my Bat Mitzvah.

Children love the holidays and our Temple Shalom Preschool students recently celebrated Thanksgiving with a delicious banquet and sing-along with family. Now, with the arrival of December, we celebrate the joyous holiday

of Chanukah, commemorating the miracle of our heritage. The month will be filled with many fun activities. An afterschool Holiday Workshop is scheduled for December 8th where children will be given the opportunity to create special gifts for family members. These presents will be beautifully wrapped and help teach our children the joy of giving.

Beginning December 15th, TSP children will be traveling the globe during our Chanukah Around the World Week. They will be cruising, flying, and traveling across world continents.

They will be visiting North America and Antarctica on Monday, Africa on Tuesday, Europe on Wednesday, and South America on Thursday. On Friday, December 19th, they will complete their journey in Asia by joining their families for a Chanukah Sing-along followed by a fun Family Festival and, together with their parents, will participate in Chanukah activities and games, design holiday art projects, and indulge in delicious latkes, sufganiyot, and chocolate gelt.

Once again, TSP will be opening its doors for our Winter Camp when the regular preschool is closed for vacation. Children ages 2-6 can come for the day or week to play with their friends, sing, cook, and enjoy science and arts and crafts. For further information, please contact Seyla Cohen, Preschool Director at (239)455-3227.

B O G O BRING ONE GIVE ONE

Feeding the hungry is the Jewish people’s way to perform Gemilut Hasadim (acts of loving kindness) and Tikun Olam (to repair the world). Did you know that right here in Naples and the surround-ing areas there are people who cannot afford to buy food? In Judaism, giving to the poor is not viewed as a generous, magnanimous act; it is simply an act of justice and righteousness, the perfor-mance of a duty, giving the poor their due. Temple Shalom expanded on their

relational Judaism to include those who are food insecure. When you go food shopping and see those weekly specials that we all know as BOGO (Buy One Get One) take advantage of the special and place the free non-perishable foodstuff in the non-disposable shopping bag that we will give to you to fill on a weekly basis. Bring the filled bag back to Temple either during the week or when you come to Shabbat services. We will then give you an empty bag to refill. Maxine and Harvey Brenner and the 7th grade religious school class have volunteered to sort and box the food for the food pantry. Remember, BOGO not only means Buy One Get One. It also means to Bring One Give One for the food pantry. Let’s make this a successful campaign to help those in our community who are food insecure. Don’t forget to get one of the empty bags during our Oneg after services and bring it back full next Friday night or during the week.

Connecting, Engaging, Sharing and Supporting, the One Family Way

Throughout the year Temple Shalom is a “happening place.” The volunteers, staff and clergy are constantly working to ensure there are a variety of programs to enrich the lives of our membership. During the “season” months, there is no wasted time. Many speakers and educational programs are occurring from November through April. Just go

to the website at www.naplestemple.org, check out the weekly email updates, look at the Shabbat Shalom on Friday night, or look in the Voice that is published monthly. As a “One Family” leader, I encourage everyone to attend the events that interest them and get engaged with others that are attending. Meet those that you do not know and hear their story and tell them yours. Exchange contact information and see how the relationships emerge. I challenge you to do more than just go to the event, eat, and leave. Mingle! Get involved! Meet people! There are a variety of opportunities to find the right committee or volunteer job for your skill sets and comfort level. Our Religious School, Preschool and B’nai Mitzvah training are filled with enthusiastic and imaginative young minds. Our adult education programs elicit creative thinking and thought-provoking discussions. But these programs need your support. As I indicated on Yom Kippur morning, the Temple needs your help to maintain its high level of education and programs for its members and the community. The dues that we pay only covers about sixty percent of the cost of running the Temple. The rest comes from those that give generously “Above & Beyond” their dues. Thirty-eight percent of our members are not able to pay the full dues or contribute to the building fund. Yet, Temple Shalom NEVER denies anyone Jewish education, experience or worship. Temple Shalom needs your participation in “Above & Beyond.” Our goal is to have 100% participation. This year we have created a category “I/We care.” Whatever works for you works for us. It is important that all of us be part of the process. Temple not only has a financial goal but also a participation goal. You will see a Star of David in the lobby that indicates the number of family units that have participated. Be a pin on a point! If you have any questions please contact Judi Palay at [email protected]. Let’s work together to make this year one of our most successful in terms of involvement, from both a financial and participation perspective.I look forward to a very active and productive season. See you at Temple!

Bring us your Pop Tops!!

Ronald Macdonald House is very glad to receive all the pop tops that Sisterhood has been bringing them. Please continue to bring your pop tops to Temple. Place them in the Sisterhood mailbox in the office. From there they are sent to the Ronald Macdonald House. The proceeds from recycling the pop tops will help the children staying there.

Thank you in advance for your help!

It’s time for a new Temple directory!

The Temple Shalom Sisterhood celebrates their 50th anniversary by once again taking on the task of compiling the contact information for the entire Temple Shalom membership to be published in the new Temple directory. By now, every household has received a form asking you to verify your information as well as whether or not you’d like to include your profession or children’s names. You will also be asked to indicate if you’d like to opt out of

having your contact information printed in the Temple directory.

Please return these forms PROMPTLY!

Directories are complimentary and available to each member household. Help defray the cost of this undertaking by purchasing ad space, meaningful messages that will appear in the directoy. You can also help

by becoming a Friend of the directory with the contribution of you choice.

Email information update forms and ads to [email protected] or mail them to the Temple.
