The Healing Spirit in the House of God
The visit to our Shabbat Rishon inMarch by Ellen Smith, premier studentof the past of Jewish Boston, haswhetted my appetite to learn moreabout the history of our extraordinarilyhistoric congregation. For instance, Imcurious to know when the Mi Shebeirach prayer began to be recited
regularly at Shabbat services. The Mi Shebeirach, as we commonly use theterm, means the prayer for healing. And if the answer is more than thirtyyears ago, that would make us unusual(not for the first time!). Although aprayer for healing has deep roots inJewish tradition, it had fallen out offavor with most Reform Jews for a longtime.
Yet, today, Reform congregations notonly regularly include a Mi Shebeirach in their Shabbat liturgy, but many haveadded special healing services to theirrepertoire of worship opportunities. This month, we shall join them. I inviteyou to participate in the first TempleOhabei Shalom healing service, which will be held on Thursday,April 12, at 7:00 p.m.
For some people, healing services
conjure up images of revival tentmeetings, where the afflicted throwdown their crutches and cry out,Praise the Lord, I am healed! To putit mildly, these people would haveproblems with such a service in oursynagogue, and so would I. But themodern Jewish healing service is notabout superstition.
Prayer can helpheal the afflictionsof the spirit. In thewords of ourprayerbook, prayercan water an aridsoul, mend abroken heart, andrebuild a weakenedwill. Prayer mayalso have a role even in physicaldisease. Recent studies have
indicated that peoples attitudes, including their attitudes about faith, canaffect their recovery. Beyond theindividual, healing services can focusthe attention of our community onthose in need of our comfort.
Yet, when we think of prayer not just asgetting in touch with ourselves and ourneighbors, but as talking to God, weopen up a new dimension. We askGods spirit, Gods breath, to blow intous, to give us strength. The healingservice on April 12 is for everyone whowants to be inspired. It is for thosewho are sick and those who care forthose who are sick. It is for thosewhose bodies are in pain, and for thosewhose hearts are in pain.
We will sit together. We will sing andbe silent, hear and recite prayers andpsalms, tell and listen to stories. And,
if all goes well, we will leave a bit betterable to deal with the complexities thatlife provides.
From Eileen and our entire family, mayI also wish you at this season a zissen Pesach, a sweet and joyous Passovercelebration.

who shared similar dreams. Instead I will work onmy golf game and improving in other areas of mylife.
So this Passover, rather than focusing on what Imiss, I will try to focus on how much I have to bethankful for beyond food and freedom. And whileturning 50 has meant that I am not as young as Ionce was, I am appreciative of how good I have it,how many wonderful people I share my life with, and how, relatively speaking, life is pretty darngood for most of us. A little deprivation, and evenan AARP invitation, may not be so bad at all.Happy Passover!

Passover will soon be here.Unlike all of our other holidays,Passover really does involve afairly noticeable change in ourlives for a long enough period totruly make a difference. Inaddition to celebrating theholiday at seders and in services, we change oureating habits in a way that affects us every day.Being deprived of some of the foods that we take forgranted makes an impact on us. This year for me ithas even more significance. It is, as it frequently is,about perspective.
I recently celebrated my 50 th birthday. Yes, I know Ilook much younger, but the calendar does not lie.Now I realize that everybody reading this does sowith a different perspective. For some, the responseto a 50 th birthday will be, thats so young. Forothers, the perspective will be quite different, especially as viewed from a much younger vantagepoint. Normally a birthday is just another date onthe calendar, but somehow this one felt different. Ireceived my notification that I was eligible now to bea member of AARP (the American Association forRetired Persons); celebrated with my family and avery few of my friends; and was constantly remindedthat this was no regular birthday. Just like Passover,I had a sense of change, but (sadly) unlikePassover, this change will not revert back now thatthe celebrations are over !!
The deprivation of foods at Passover should be andis a reminder of how much we have, even as wefocus on what we do not have. For though we misspizza, pasta, bread and all sorts of other leavenedproducts, we should be mindful that we still are notstarving, we still have a great variety of things to eat,and we still live in a land of freedom and opportunitythat many people yearn to enjoy. But for most of us,Passover means that we miss some of the things we
take for granted. In America, we are accustomed toalmost boundless choices in almost everything wedo. As a result, we too frequently forget how goodwe have it because whenever anything is takenaway from us, we feel deprived. The losses ofchoice at Passover should really be viewed in afairer context. Similarly, at the age of 50 I no longercan do many of the physical things that I used to. Imiss them, too, and focus on what I can do. I willnot ever play in the N.F.L. or at Wimbledon, or ski inthe Olympics. Oh, well.neither will a lot of people

Cantorial Search Committee ReportThe Cantorial Search Committee held a Town Meet-ing at Penn-Spero Hall on Wednesday evening,
February 7, 2007 attended by approximately 40Congregants. Committee member and Shabbat gui-tarist Andy O'Connell first led everyone an openingsong. Chair Michael Weintraub explained to every-one the selection process and reported on what thecommittee had accomplished to date and where itsgoals and objectives were moving forward. In short, the Chair explained that the committee filed an appli-cation with the American Conference of Cantors(ACC). As such, we are prohibited from seeking toengage a Cantor, Soloist, or any other person to fillthe Cantorial position while registered with the ACC.
As noted in our last report, Cantor Onigman has ex-pressed her desire to be considered for this positionand she is exempted from this prohibition.
It was noted at the Town Meeting that prior to filingthe application, we sought and received resumesfrom other established schools such as Hebrew Col-lege and the Academy of Jewish Religion. While thisresulted in a few telephone and personal interviews, the committee felt it needed to expand its search. The Chair went on to report that we now have re-ceived resumes from around the country and arefully engaged in the interview process meeting on aweekly basis. We hope that the committee canmake a recommendation to the Board by the begin-ning of April.
Committee Shellee Robbins then reported on thesurvey results. She stated that we had received over70 surveys and that the majority of congregantsranked pastoral duties, singing voice and ability totrain bar/bat mitzvah students as the top three skillsof importance. This report was followed by manycomments and questions. It was an informativemeeting and feedback was very positive.
We are currently working on a Cantorial web sitethat will keep everyone up to date and provide Con-gregants with various report summaries as well asthe Cantorial application. Please keep your com-ments and suggestions coming as each one is takenseriously. Thank you for your continued support.

Yom Hashoah Light a Yellow Candleto Remember those who perished
Its been sixty years since Nazi concentrationcamps were liberated, and the Holocaust thatclaimed six million Jewish lives came to an end. Toensure that the six million did not die in vain and thatthe Holocaust never happens again, Temple OhabeiShalom will join Jews throughout North America byparticipating in the Yom HaShoah Yellow CandleProgram TM, a program sponsored by the Federationof Jewish Mens Clubs in cooperation with theUnited Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and theNorth American Federation of Temple Brotherhoods.
As the years pass, the memories of thosewho fell victim to the ultimate hate crime must notdiminish. Thats why we are encouraging your
family and every family in Temple Ohabei Shalom tolight just one Yellow Candle on the night of Sunday,April 15 th, 2007 when each family lights a YellowCandle, it will increase the awareness of theHolocaust.
Yom HaShoah candles are a highly visiblesymbol for keeping the flame alive. Their colorrecalls the badges Jews were forced to wear inNazi-occupied Europe, but their flame inspires hopethat we can yet make our world a tolerant place tolive.

From the desk of...Shari Churwin
This year, our students in grades 3 7 will onceagain have the opportunity to apply what they arelearning in the classroom to a unique experience, our infamous Chocolate Seder. For the past monthor so, students and teachers have been studying theparts of the seder so that they can use theircreativity and to create their own Passover ritualsaccording to our special maggid (story). Here is orversion of the chocolate story of Passover:
Many years ago many Jews lived in Egypt, aland flowing with chocolate the roads wereeven paved with chocolate bars. They livedpeacefully with the Egyptians for many years, sharing all of the chocolate riches that Egypthad to offer. One year there came a newking who knew not of the sharing ofchocolate. This wicked king, the Pharaoh, was afraid that the Jewswere eating too muchchocolate so he orderedthem into slavery andmade them build greatpyramids to store andsave the chocolateriches of Egypt.
The Jews, who wereused to eating chocolatewere very upset. Theywished that they couldhave even just a littlechocolate, but thePharaoh forbid anyEgyptian from sharing chocolate with theJews. They were not allowed to make theirown chocolate or to eat any of the chocolateat all. Many Jewish parents were sad andafraid that their children would never havethe sweet taste of chocolate. Many parentstried to hide their children from the chocolateoppression by sneaking them out of Egyptalong the Chocolate river.
The Pharaohs daughter found a baby in thechocolate river. She called him MosesHershey and he came to live in the palacewith the Egyptian royalty and he could eat asmuch chocolate as he wanted. One day ashe was walking home from ChocolateMaking class, he saw an Egyptian guardtaunting a Jew by eating chocolate fudge infront of him. Moses watched this and
became very angry, so angry that he hit theguard over the head with a super-sizedchocolate bar. He was so upset by thisincident that he ran away from the palaceand became a cow farmer
(and eventually one of Egypts largestproducers of Chocolate Milk).
While on the farm he started a fire to makesome burnt marshmallows for smores andhe noticed that the fire did not consume hismarshmallow. Then he heard the voice ofGod, who spoke with Moses and told himthat he was a Jew and that the other Jewsneeded him to help free them so that theycould once again eat chocolate.
Moses returned to the palace and spoke withPharaoh. He calmly said, Please Pharaoh, let my people go and eat chocolate. But
God hardened Pharaohs heartand arteries and he justwouldnt listen. Moses had aTootsie Roll staff in his hand, which he turned into someasparagus (vegetables werevery scary to the Egyptianswho lived on chocolate), butPharaoh would not listen. SoMoses tried to bargain with thePharaoh, but he just wouldntlet them eat chocolate. Godeven sent 10 plagues topunish Pharaoh and theEgyptians, for example theriver was turned into skim milk,
but he still would not let the Jews eatchocolate. Finally, the last plague frightenedthe Pharaoh and he gave the Jews somechocolate. But, all of a sudden he changedhis mind again, so the Jews who were bakingbread and eating chocolate had to pack upand leave. Moses called to the Jews to getout of there Nestle Quick! It was so rushedthat the bread couldnt rise and the chocolatebars on their backs melted makingchocolate covered matzah, a wonderfulPassover treat.
The Jews raced towards the Chocolate seaand Moses once again raised his TootsieRoll staff and the sea parted making a pathof M & Ms for the Jews to follow to thedesert. When the Egyptians arrived at thesea their chocolate chariots melted, drowning

Let Your Voice Be HeardIran's recent Holocaust denial conference and thethreat by the president of that country to "wipe Israeloff the map," might appear to the rest of the world asthe rantings of a fanatic. While that may be thecase, it is crucial for us as Jews to speak out againstsuch ignorance, hatred, and blatant Holocaust
Save the Date & Community Cornerdenial. Currently in many congregations across theUS, Jewish and Christian, congregants have beenwriting letters to their representatives in Congress, urging them to support H.CON.RES.21, calling onthe UN Security Council to charge Iranian PresidentAhmadinejad of Iran with violating the UN charterand the 1948 Convention on the Prevention andPunishment of the Crime of Genocide
At Temple Ohabei Shalom, we have a long history ofspeaking out against injustice and of holding up ourheads proudly as Jews. By joining in this letterwriting campaign we can perpetuate that traditionand continue to hold our heads up proudly as Jews.
Here is a copy of the letter. You may alter it if youwish. You can obtain the email address of your

Dear :The Iranian regime hosted a Holocaust denialconference, mocking the murder of 11 million Jews
and Gentiles. It seeks regional dominance andspreads Islamic extremism. The President of Iranrepeatedly calls for The destruction of Israel anddefies the international community by developingnuclear capabilities to carry out the threat. Iranshate-filled Incitement to genocide must stop. I urgeyou to support H.CON.RES.21, calling on the UnitedNations Security Council to charge Iranian PresidentMahmoud Ahmadinejad with violating the 1948Convention on the Prevention and Punishment ofthe Crime of Genocide and the United NationsCharter, because of his calls for the destruction of a
UN Member State. It is time for the internationalcommunity to recognize Iran as a global threat andto take immediate and clear action.Thank you very much.(your name)
