people motives that arent real. When we do so, we drive outthe divine presence from ourmidst and we cease to knowGod.

Among Judaisms most fundamental teachings areto love your neighbor and to see him or her ascreated in the divine image. Its no wonder, then, that the Mishna derives the precept to judge yourneighbor favorably, to give him or her the benefit of

the doubt. Only when we do so - only when wesubdue our inclination to injure another and insteadendeavor to strengthen and support one another inall ofourways - can we bring holiness and blessinginto our world and create a truly holy community.

    * * *

A final note: As we speak of compassion in all ofour ways, I am inspired by those of you who wroteto ask what we can do to help alleviate the terriblesuffering in Haiti. In their time of unimaginablehardship, may we stand by the Haitian people with

our prayers and with our help. I urge all of us tosupport (or continue to support) one of the manyworthy relief agencies, among which are the

American Jewish World Service, Union for ReformJudaism, UNICEF, and International RescueCommittee. Through our compassion, may thepeople of Haiti know healing and wholeness.

This month Id like to share with you following text:

The Talmud tells a story about Rabbi Shimon BarYochai and his son, who were hidden in a cave. Whenthey learned they were now safe and came out of thecave twelve years later, they saw people forsakingeternal life to engage in ephemeral acts. Whatever theylooked at was consumed in fire. They arouseddestruction in the world and a heavenly voice cameforth and said, Do you wish to destroy My world?Return to your cave. Twelve months later they

emerged with compassion, and wherever they went theybrought blessing to the world.

It is taught: Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and his son wereconvinced that the only acts which constituted divineservice were Torah study, prayer, fasting, and the like. Therefore, when they saw that people were not engagedin these practices they were enraged and said, Theyforsake eternal life to engage in ephemeral acts. Theirintolerance increased anger in the world, until a divine

voice told them to return to their cave. They thensensed that this was to teach them a better way, a wayof compassion.

The path of compassion is to serve God through everyaspect of every act, giving heed to the fact that the HolyOne is there, too. This is manifest in the ways that thegreat masters are able to accomplish great unificationseven while telling stories with a friend . . . or to removesadness by engaging in . . . business. This, too, is aform of unification. Even when someone sees somethingunseemly in another person, or when another persondistracts us . . . we should recognize that even this isfrom God, to accomplish some divine end through us.This is clearly the meaning of Know Him in all of your

ways. (Toldot Yaakov Yosef, Vayetze #5)

In the narrow spaces of our individual lives, it issometimes easy to lose the way of compassion and ofseeing the divinity in each other. Sometimes, owing tosomething we dont like - a perceived shortcoming, aslight, an opinion we dont share - we can findourselves casting aspersions and imputing to good

Progressive in attitude yet traditional in practice, Temple Ohabei Shalom is an inclusiveReform Jewish community committed to nurturing, sustaining, and touching Jewish lives through joyfulworship, life

Just in case you missed it, onJanuary 23rd we held this yearsMusic and Worship Benefit -Duets: Harmony, Partnership,Collaboration, Byachad. Thetheme of duets was drawn from thewonderful sense of communitygenerated at last years Benefit, and this year's event lived up to itstitle. A musical duet requires give

and take, listening, a true partnership. When thisrelationship is achieved, we all benefit.

But to better appreciate the true collaboration ofDuets,

perhaps we should call it Quartet! There are four groupsof people who joined together to create this yearsfantastic evening: the beautiful musicians, the hard-working Committee (led by Shelley Schwartz), theleadership of our synagogue (staff and lay-leaders alike)

and the community that came to participate. Eachmember of this quartet added something unique to thewhole and helped create a wonderful event.

So whether you were a member of the January23rdQuartet, or if you would like to be, there are severalevents upcoming that share those qualities of joy, fun, collaboration and community. Join us for a festive Purimcelebration on February 28th. Join us for a Judaism inMotion or Shabbat Rishon service and dinner. Theseevents offer each of us the opportunity to come togetherto create something special. I look forward to sharingthese moments with all of you.

Support TOS Social Action andthe Brookline High School-Emerson Literacy Partnership

Contribute to and Attend IntelliJam a benefit world music concertSaturday, March 6, 3pm at BHS

After a successful Mitzvah Day in November, the next project of the TOS Social Action Committee is to support the BrooklineHigh School-Emerson Literacy Partnership and the IntelliJam concert on Saturday, March 6 at 3pm at Brookline High. This project has a special significance for our congregation as it all began as a result of Mitzvah Day 2008 (May) when weconducted a book drive for the Emerson Elementary School in Roxbury. Sarah Plovnick, a TOS student, was so taken with theEmerson School when we delivered the books that she decided to do more. She created a group at Brookline High, the BHSEmerson Literacy Partnership, to support literacy in low income communities. She is spearheading the IntelliJam fundraising concertto help the Emerson School carry out its dream of building a library. The students have lined up wonderful performing talent fromthe Emerson community and from Brookline, and they have reached out to businesses and local foundations as sponsors.

Please support this effort by contributing to and attending the IntelliJam. Performers include Zili Misik, a renowned womensworld music group; jazz musicians Bo Winiker and Jamie Saltman; the Emerson School chorus; and the Brookline High SchoolCamerata. A reception will follow the concert.
