Shari Churwin A hero is a person who is admired or ideal-ized for courage, outstanding achievement ornoble qualities. Our grade 6 students, whoare in the beginning stages of their own Bnei

Mitzvah journey, learn about Jewish heroesand the values they exemplify during the first semester ofgrade 6. Over the course of the semester, they uncover theinspiring stories of heroic men and women in the world ofscience, sports, film, and politics people such as SandyKoufax, Albert Einstein, and Steven Spielberg whose lserve as models to help students link Jewish values and idto their personal actions and lives. The culminating projecfor their semester-long studies is an opportunity for each sdent to share a personal Jewish hero with the class.

Our students heroes come in many shapes and forms,

whether biblical or historical figures, family members, ceties or even next-door neighbors. Bob Dylan, Kevin YoukEstee Lauder, Ilan Ramon and Levi Strauss are just a few the interesting people we had a chance to meet during thepresentations. For example, one student, Alberto (Bertie)

Ancona, researched the many accomplishments of Jonas SIt was so interesting to hear the questions that the other stdents asked during his report. It is amazing that, due to thwork of Dr. Salk, just a few decades ago polio was sometthat children feared and today our students read about it inbooks, as if it were ancient history. Bertie spoke about themitzvah of Pikuakh Nefesh , saving a life, as a value that headmires. Another student, Tova Rubenoff, talked about thshort, but very exciting, life of Hannah Senesh, a World W2 paratrooper and poet. Tova told the story of Hannahs cature and outstanding bravery which exemplified the mitzvOmetz Lev , courage. She spoke about the importance of being courageous and standing up for what you believe in. Iwish that there was enough space in this issue of Tidings me to write about each students presentation as their teacers Kate and Jason and l learned so much from them.

So, you may be wondering why we emphasize Jewish herand values in the pre-Bnei Mitzvah year. It is our hope thstudents understand that becoming a Bnei Mitzvah is mumore than just leading our congregation in worship or reaing from the Torah. It is also about the Content of their Chacter* (which was the theme of the BOSTY shul-in in Deber) and the choices that they make along their Jewish Jouney. More importantly, we understand, and need our studeto embrace, the idea that they have the capability and knoedge to be Jewish heroes for the next generation.

*This phrase was made famous by Dr. Martin Luther King in hisI have a Dream Speech.
