Far from the Madding CrowdGo where few have trodden. This is the time to do something different and go some place that will open your eyes – and all your senses – in a different way. I did. I accepted a trip that brought me out to the grasslands and into a landscape that many may think is desolate and uninviting.

When I told friends that I was going to Mongolia, I was met with an enthusiastic “You are?! I would love to go there!” response. So, off I went to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia with nary a sunscreen product and with scant clothing at that too. That’s not a good idea. Even though the sun was blazing down intensely upon us, the weather was pleasantly cool and even chilly when the winds whipped up. Even more so when we headed out of the city and into the wild terrain that showcases Mongolian beauty in all its natural splendour.

I also discovered a bustling city that is booming with skyscrapers – sprouting like truffles amidst a city landscape dotted with abandoned buildings harking back to the days of Russian rule. And alongside them, you may find old Chinese temples lending colour and charm to this eclectic cityscape. It was an experience that will never be forgotten and which friends and family will remember as well – that is, if you buy them gifts of cashmere. If you know where to shop, you will find that buying cashmere products is like finding nuggets of gold – without the price of gold. Look out for our September/October issue of Lonely Planet Asia or October/November issue of escape! to find out more about this gorgeous city and its culture.

Scents and Senses

Temptations never end in Melbourne, a city that sizzles with an ever-changing and never-ending variety of destinations for coffee gourmands,

foodies and shopping aficionadoes. Melbourne offers all that and more – with unique experiences that make each visit and discovery a uniquely Melburnian memory to cherish.

We all know that Melbourne takes its coffee seriously, and this coffee capital continues to stoke the caffeine rush in many fans with new standards in sourcing, roasting and brewing. Baristas and roasters are giving their beloved beans tender loving care, and ethically so as well for some. We take a look at several coffee joints with the hip factor and ethical agenda. And it’s not just the coffee that has garnered international fans. The city has raised the bar for cafe dining, so expect to find gourmet food to go with your coffee, with menus that highlight organic produce and fine culinary creations. Discover these hidden gems now.

What’s BreWingFor coffee that tells a story, check out 2Pocket Fair Trade (277 Little Lonsdale Street) which draws the artistic crowd with its hip, grunge factor. With sustainability and fair trade as its main focus, they stock gifts, toys and homeware alongside its 70 over types of chocolates that support disadvantaged producers. So have your favourite brew and pick up some items to support their charitable goal.

Just a few streets away, Krimper Café (20 Guildord Lane) has been making its own statement with its design concept. Krimper occupies a

converted warehouse space that used to be a sawmill and cabinetmaking factory and now brews its coffee in an environment that is industrial and rustic, with recycled machinery and furniture seeing new life as artistic interior design pieces. The coffee is from Proud Mary (another coffee institution in Collingwood), accompanied by a creative menu that is inspired by Japanese, French and American styles.

Do check out the range of coffee from Seven Seeds, a boutique micro roaster, café and retailer that has played a big part in influencing the coffee scene. Their coffee is available at Brother Baba Budan (359 Little Bourke Street) and Traveller Coffee (2/14 Crossley Street). Traveller is a small set-up that exudes the charm of an old American Airstream caravan; with regulars dropping by for their morning coffee and choice of cakes and pastries by Brioche by Phillip (114 Russell Street), an artisanal patisserie. Try the spinach and feta triangle with kasundi. Look out for a signboard showing a shoe; the name “Traveller” is not on it. Brother Baba Budan likewise focuses on their coffee, providing a tiny spot with just 15 seats for mainly takeaways.

Over at Filter (555 Collins Street), a roastery and café, they take their food seriously as well, and have crafted a perky menu that pairs well with its brews. Scandinavian influence is the order of the day, with one of the popular dishes being the Goslinger smorrebrod sandwich, a medley of chicken, avocado and saffron mayo.

sWeet satisfactionFrom coffee, we move on to desserts, and the best way to sample Melbourne’s sweet offerings is to go on a walk with Queenie (queeniesfoodtours.com). To sharpen your sweet tooth, the desserts tour begins at a place that is famous for its television show. Have a taste of a lolly cake and pick up the finer points of baking this cake. Queenie will take you from the heart of the city out to the suburbs where you will uncover more hidden gems. You will head out to South Yarra, which is gaining repute as the dessert capital of Melbourne. You will

taste and relish your way through an irresistible line-up of chocolates, macaroons, tarts, cakes, profiteroles and all manner of patisserie delights.

MaD aBout MarketsWhen in Melbourne, one must visit the markets and Queen Victoria Market (corner of Victoria and Elizabeth Streets) is a historic landmark that promises hours of organic gourmet produce heaven. It showcases a staggering range of stalls selling fruits, vegetables, meats, local and imported gourmet produce, flowers and even homeware, clothes and souvenirs. Going through this market will require some discipline as you will be tempted to stop at all the bustling stalls. Go on the two-hour Hunt and Gather Food Tour for a deeper insight and appreciation of the stories and history behind this market. Take tram service 35 and alight at the corner of La Trobe and Elizabeth Streets.

To experience village market shopping at its most charming, visit South Melbourne Market (corner of Coventry and Cecil Streets), which has been a meeting point for farmers, producers, artisans and foodies since 1867. Visitors will be regaled by gorgeous

produce, superb coffee and shopping options as well as a buzzing calendar of live music and events. Tram services to take from the CBD: 1, 12, 96 and 109.

For a taste of food lover’s paradise, head to Prahran Market (163 Commercial Road, South Yarra), which showcases delectable offerings from fishmongers, butchers, delicatessens and speciality producers. If you are a gourmand, this is where you will find heirloom produce, hard-to-find speciality

Getting AroundIt has never been easier to explore Melbourne on foot. The CBD and Docklands areas are now a free tram zone with many services that take you to major attractions and locales. Start off by hopping onto city circle tram No 35, which passes by major tourist attractions and locales within the CBD. You can reach your favourite alleyways and shopping centres with minimal fuss. No 35 runs at 12-minute intervals in both directions, from 10am to 6pm (Wed–Sat) and 10am to 9pm (Thur, Fri & Sat).

To explore Melbourne’s precincts such as Fitzroy, South Yarra/Toorak, Richmond and St Kilda on the public trams, buy a Myki Visitor Value Pack, which can be used on trains, trams and buses. It costs A$14 and includes A$8 of stored myki value, with discounts at 15 attractions in the city and its precincts.

Capture your Seoul

Dubbed the “Korean Wave” in mid-1999 to describe the burgeoning appetite for Korean cultural exports, this phenomenon has had

an immensely powerful impact on global lifestyles. Having reached as far as Latin America, North Africa, and the Middle East, the Korean Wave is influencing everyone from avid K-pop fans to Hallyu drama-chasers, re-writing fashion and beauty ideals, and proliferating the growing taste for everything Korean, from traditional garb to regional cuisine.

SHOPPINGKorean fashion has definitely seen a leap in demand, much thanks to K-Pop idols and drama actors who flawlessly carry fashion-forward garments with ease. Fashion designers in Seoul tend to follow this curve of wearability, with many choosing to stylise clothing that will look good on a model as well as any person oo the street.

A brand that has already gained a cult following internationally for following this design philosophy is Modern Creation Munich (often stylised as MCM). Formerly a German brand of leather goods, MCM was acquired by Kim Sung-Joo in 2005, where it underwent heavy rebranding and now counts world stars like

There seems to be no stopping the relentless onslaught of Korean lifestyle influences that have been sweeping the world in recent years.

Kanye West and EXO as fans. Another name to look out for is Steve J and Yoni P, a designer duo whose playful and colourful hip hop-inspired clothes are raved as the hottest things in the Korean fashion scene today and even touted by Vogue as “one to watch”.

Needless to say, shopping in Seoul is a veritable institution of its own, with streets brimming with local cosmetics brands and affordable apparel. Myeongdong carries both international and homegrown brands along its street, while Dongdaemun is known as the Mecca of Korean fashion with the area being filled with wholesale shops that provide merchandise to other fashion retailers in the city. In college towns, Ehwa and Hongdae, fashion is targeted at trendy youngsters and is sold much cheaper than at other places while still carrying a high standard of quality. For more popular brand names, hit the chic streets of Apgujeong, known to many as where high-end fashion designers converge in Seoul.

Cosmetics fans will also rejoice at the wide array of standalone boutiques offering inexpensive skincare and makeup. Take your pick from names such as Nature Republic, Etude House, The Face Shop, and Tony Moly, whose stores are easily visible from just about

Skyscrapers in Seoul

every corner. These internationally renowned brands offer much cheaper prices and deals in their native country, and purchasers of their products even stand to take home generous samples of their latest releases.

DININGIt’s impossible to watch a Korean drama without being tempted by the array of food consumed by the characters. As a result of these shows, it is not uncommon for dishes to explode in popularity and the classic pairing of fried chicken and beer is one such item. The fried chicken in chimaek, a portmanteau of ‘chicken’ and ‘maekju’ (meaning beer), isn’t your average American-style battered-and-fried wings. Rather, wings, legs and breast meat are coated in a seasoned batter before being fried and then coated once more with a sticky, sweet and spicy sauce. Wash them all down with a frosty tall glass of Korean beer for a treat on any night.

For authentic Korean street fare such as ddeokbokki, a mixture of soft rice and fish cakes steeped in gochujang, a sweet red chili sauce, make a stop by the nation’s first market, Gwangjang Market, or the equally popular Tongin Market. You can

also opt to dine like royalty by partaking in traditional court cuisine at places such as Korea House. Here, you can feast on Daejanggeum, a table d’hôte that ranges in variety, with up to 14 dishes being served at one meal. These dishes can include Abalone in Soy Sauce, Pomegranate Shaped Puffer Fish Soup and Beef Rib Meat Patties.

Enroll yourself in Korean culinary classes at restaurants such as Surime in Gyeongju for a more hands-on approach to Korean cuisine. You can master the skills to make a variety of dishes such as kimchi, a fermented vegetable that is a staple at every Korean meal, or japchae, a delicious blend of noodles, spices, meat and vegetables. Alternatively, you can also harvest produce such as strawberries at farms in the city.

ATTRACTIONSIf there is one thing Seoul does well, it is preserving its past and having it blend seamlessly among modernity. Visit living history at Bukchon Hanok Village, which is situated in between the Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces. The cultural and heritage centre is where many restored Hanoks can be found. These traditional Korean houses are still used as places of residency but there are many others who have converted Hanoks into workshops, museums, tea houses and guesthouses that can be visited. Walking tours around this scenic maze of streets will bring you through some notable places of interest, such as the Bukchon Traditional Culture Centre, Museum of Korean Buddhist Art, Han Sansgoo Embroidery Workshop and World Jewellery Museum.

For a touch of cosmopolitan flavour, enjoy a stroll along the picturesque Deoksugung Stone Wall Path. Stretching around 900m in length, the trail is touted as an urban space where human and nature can coexist. If you are in the mood for some romance, indulge in a date at the famed Namsan “love locks” bridge, where you and your loved one can choose to secure your own padlock to the promise of eternal love. The nearby N Seoul Tower, otherwise commonly referred to as Namsan Tower, also marks the highest point in Seoul. This lofty peak can be accessed via buses, cable cars or on foot and offers panoramic views of the glittering nightscape below.

For those who have caught the Hallyu bug, a K-Pop tour will be right up your alley. These tours, such as the one crafted by Dream Tour Korea, are

a literal dream come true for anyone hoping to experience K-Pop beyond the music videos. Take trips to top K-Pop agencies in Gangnam and to eateries owned by K-Pop world stars. There are also opportunities to attend K-Pop concerts headlined by your favourite artistes and you can even join in the fun with a K-Pop dance lesson that will have you grooving your hips to familiar beats in no time.

Depending on the season, take the opportunity to join in annual celebrations and festivals such as the highly anticipated Hwacheon Sancheoneo (Mountain Trout) Ice Festival at the beginning of the year and the Jinhae Gunhangje (Cherry Blossom) Festival in April. Look out for the Icheon Rice Cultural Festival in October, where you can treat yourself to different varieties of rice and savour the scent of makgeolli, also known as rice wine, while enjoying traditional music and dance.

Islands of Idyll

KRABI

Krabi’s dramatic limestone cliffs, golden sand beaches, offshore islands and international airport ensure that Krabi receives a growing number

of sun-seekers. Krabi is on the mainland and while the riverine town has an interesting market, most tourists head to the beaches of Ao Nang and Railay and from here, fan off to several offshore islands such as Phi Phi, Hong and Lanta.

Railay has the best beaches while Ao Nang is a well-established tourist beach with restaurants, bars, resorts and facilities like ATMs, travel agents, rock climbing schools, ticket offices for ferries and a flotilla of long-tail boats to transport day visitors to various near-deserted offshore islands.

Fly direct to Krabi Airport, which is the base for domestic flights and a handful of international flights, including those direct from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Hundreds of Thai islands await and beckon to adventure tourists and leisure seekers. You will find in these islands some of Thailand’s finest resorts, restaurants and spas, and of course, the street food and vibes that make Thailand a memorable vacation destination. We take a closer look at several islands of interest.

shoplots. Alternatively, head to Jungceylon Shopping Mall and Central Festival Phuket, which are two of several malls on the island. Explore the interior rainforests and plantations along dirt trails on all terrain vehicles. Along a similar vein, Xtrem Adventures offers an action-packed treetop adventure in the forests of Phuket. Zip, slide, glide and jump your way through the rainforest canopy along an elevated course that weaves its way through a former rubber plantation.

Koh LIpe And KhAo LAKKoh Lipe is a small island paradise a boat ride away from popular destinations in Thailand such as Phuket and Koh Lanta as well as Langkawi. Part of the Adang Archipelago, it boasts gorgeous stretches of beaches that draw multitudes of tourists annually. The island has three beautiful beaches to explore, namely Pattaya Beach, Sunrise Beach and Sunset Beach. Pattaya Beach’s clear blue waters are perfect for snorkeling, with tourists flocking to its trendy restaurants and bars for cocktails. For a more serene experience, travellers visit Sunset Beach with driftwood-built eateries that exude old charm. East of the island is Sunrise Beach, another ideal location for snorkeling.

Located along the Andaman coastline, Khao Lak offers tourists a quiet getaway at its unspoiled beaches. They can hop on a bus at Phuket International Airport that will bring them to Khao Lak. Many visit the world renowned Phang Na Bay located an hour away, paddling through its limestone landscape and exploring its caves.

phUKeT Phuket is Thailand’s largest island (543km2) and best known with global travellers who fly direct to the international airport from many parts of the globe. Its main beaches are situated on the western seaboard with the most popular and crowded beaches being Patong and Karon. Land of the Thunder Dragon

Is a way of life for the Bhutanese. The Kingdom of Bhutan first received travellers to their land in 1974 during the coronation of the 4th King Jigme Singye Wangchuck with

278 tourists. Since then, tourism has been liberalised and today, there is no longer a cap on the number of travellers allowed to visit Bhutan.

SInGAporE To BhuTAn DIrEcT WITh DrukAIrThe only international airport is located in Paro town, which is a 50-minute drive from the capital city, Thimphu.

Drukair, the national flag carrier for the Royal Bhutan Government, flies to eight destinations including Singapore and Bangkok. It started operations in 1983, and has flown for 32 years with a perfect safety record. Drukair has direct flights to Singapore twice a week, and a third frequency will be added in September 2015 on the Airbus A319s that seat 118 passengers, including 16 in business class.

GroSS nATIonAL hAppInESS AnD TourISM poLIcy of BhuTAn The tourism policy of Bhutan states that travellers must purchase a minimum sum package from a licensed travel agency before a visa is issued. These packages start at US$20O/day for Summer and Winter and US$250/day for Spring and Autumn. Bhutan has a “High Value, Low Impact” tourism policy, which ensures sustainability by discouraging mass tourism and making sure the tourism industry is environmentally and ecologically friendly.

The small Himalayan country is touted as the “Happiest Country” in the world and bases this on its own Gross National Happiness, which measures the people’s quality of life rather than the economy’s growth. But it is easy to see

why the Bhutanese are such happy people; the Buddhist kingdom, approximately the size of Switzerland, is surrounded by majestic mountainous landscapes and lush green forests.

ADVEnTurE, nATurE AnD cuLTurE Whether it is adventure, nature or culture, there is something for everyone in Bhutan.

For those looking for a spiritual journey, consider hiking up to the iconic Tiger’s Nest, which is perched atop a cliff at 9700ft/2950m above sea level. Built around the cave where Guru Rimpoche meditated for three months, the hike up to the viewpoint is thrilling and worthwhile. While there, develop a deeper understanding for Buddhism and meditation by joining neykor, or pilgrimage, with Dr Karma Phuntsho, author of History of Bhutan (visit www.Neykor.com for more information).

Nature lovers should make a visit to the Phobjikha Valley to see the Black Necked cranes in the month of November. For

the adventurous, attempt some of the best camping treks in the world in Bhutan, like the Soi Yaksa (www.soiyaksa.com), or even the longest and toughest Snowman Trek, which will require up to 25 days.

For the culture lover, you can attend any one of the religious festivals that takes place in all the Dzongkhags (provinces); the popular ones being the Paro Tshechu in early spring (March/April) and Thimphu Tshechu (September/October). Do also check out all of Bhutan’s 13 traditional crafts like weaving, Thangka painting and sculpturing.

Mystical Mandalay

Its no surprise that the mystical city of Mandalay has grown to become the centre of culture and religion in Burma. Thankfully, jetting off to this vibrant spot

is a painless feat with SilkAir, Asia’s most awarded regional airline. Connecting flights between Singapore and Mandalay operate three times a week, making your journey to Myanmar’s second largest city a breeze.

As the last royal capital of Burma, the city is steeped in history dating back to hundreds of years ago. One historic monument that has never failed to impress is the magnificent palace built by the last Burmese monarchy situated right in the heart of Mandalay. Roam amongst the 40 different timber buildings, including a spiral watchtower with a spectacular panoramic view and the Glass Palace, touted as one of the most beautiful apartments in the sprawling grounds.

To the northeast of the city centre lies the 230m tall Mandalay Hill. Scattered with beautiful monasteries, pagodas and temples, Burmese Buddhists have been known to visit the site for pilgrimages. Before venturing to the top of the hill, make sure to stop by Kuthodaw Pagoda. This building houses the world’s largest book, which consists of 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist teachings. Time your visit well and you may even make it to peak just in time to catch the breathtaking view of the sun setting over the city and plains below.

Continue your religious journey with a visit to the

Maha Myat Muni Paya, a temple that is home to a 4m high Buddha statue made of gold and decorated with precious jewels. Known as Myanmar’s second holiest pilgrimage site, visitors can even partake in the ceremonial tradition of decorating the Buddha statue with a small pack of gold leaves.

For a little adventure, wander out of Mandalay to the Ancient City of Bagan, a renowned archaeological site. Located on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, Bagan is home to the largest and densest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins in the world. Ascend on a hot-air balloon for

a birds-eye view of the buildings, many of which date back to the 11th and 12th centuries.

While at Bagan, take a detour to the stunning Inle Lake situated amongst the highlands. Designated as Myanmar’s first UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves site, the area houses over twenty species of snails and fishes that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Be sure to visit the Khaung Daing Hot Spring on the lake’s western shore, which gives you a front-row view of the majestic Shan Mountains. The waters of this relaxing natural hot spring are sure to wash all your fatigue away, leaving you recharged for the rest of your trip.

Driving through Shikoku

Home to majestic mountains, hot springs and beautiful coastlines, Shikoku is a hidden gem waiting to be uncovered. Located west of Japan’s main island

Honshu, the island comprises of four prefectures: Kagawa, Ehime, Tokushima and Kochi. To get to Shikoku, take a flight from major cities such as Tokyo or drive in from Honshu. The best way to explore the island would be by car. You will have the chance to pass through towering mountains and enjoy gorgeous views of the Pacific.

H.I.S Travel is offering new and exciting self-drive trips to Shikoku. Enjoy a comfortable flight onboard Japan Airlines and excellent 3 to 4 star accommodation throughout your stay. Hop on a sturdy Toyota and explore the island for 7 days and 6 nights, guided by a handy English navigation system.

Known for the best udon in Japan, be sure to have a bowl of udon when you visit Kagawa. Walk through its beautiful gardens including the well-known Ritsurin Garden

Take a road trip and explore the nooks and crannies of the beautiful island of Shikoku

and drop by its many Shinto shrines. Don’t forget to visit the famous Angel Road and walk along the sandbar during low tide. Travel back in time at the Matsuyama Castle in Ehime and pick up local specialties at Matsuyama shopping arcade nearby. Also, sit back and relax at the well-known Dogo Onsen, one of the oldest hot springs in Japan. Enjoy nature in Tokushima on a scenic boat ride at Oboke Gorge and walk across the famous Kazura Suspension Bridge in Iya Valley. Get exclusive up-close views when you visit the coast’s famous whirlpools at Naruto Park and Uzu no Michi. Travel to Kochi and sample traditional eats at the popular Hirome Market before visiting the Chikurin-ji Temple. Take part in the festivities of Kochi including the Yosakoi Festival held annually in August and witness colourful dances and vibrant music.
