The F-Morwen series has been designed in a way that the angularity of its products is evident, symbolising a modern design. While the F-50 series highlights alluring edges in the products with minimalistic curves. Lekha’s design company Ajji, has just the right odd products to stir-up conventional Indian design sensibilities. Her collection includes a variety of products which are uniquely different but still complement each other.

This new collection is bold and is sure to take you by surprise and make you think before you actually use the chairs. The collection includes the Pink Sink, which is a chair made out of stainless steel and three different materials used for cushioning. Designed and prototyped over six years, this patented chair is as original as it gets. The Squair complements the Pink Sink and like its name, is in the shape of a square.

The Drop, on the other hand, hangs down from the ceiling and swings along as you sink into it. While the Red Dot unlike the other three chairs is fixed to the wall; as you sit in it, the body of the chair flexes to give

you a very comfortable and relaxed sitting experience. The product come with an inherent advantage of being foldable when not in use and thus prove to be a great space saver.

In a quick chat with The Inside Track, Lekha was happy to play guide and share some insights about her new range.

What has your design journey been like so far?

My idea was to do something radically different. I started with this idea about 8 years ago. I completed my Masters from NID and I did a course called the Bad Design, which included creating stuff, which looked like it was really ‘bad’.

After that I started off with this very unusual looking range of furniture. I created the company Ajji, named after my grandmother which helps take her presence forward. Every 6 months I come up with a bunch of things that are unusual or completely off the

board and as far away from normal as possible.

What’s the Red Dot seat about?

It’s a big red dot. That’s exactly what it is.

What are you currently working on and what do you have planned next?

First, I want to get this collection out in Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore. As far as the new collection is concerned, I have already started

working on it. I am restless by nature, and in an

ideal situation, I will keep coming up with new designs regularly every 6 months. The next collection that I am working on is something that is totally in metal.

Are you looking at mass production in the future?

Godrej Interio recently added another milestone to its list of achievements by being awarded with the BIFMA Level certification for Wish, a modular tile based system. The BIFMA level, unlike other certifications in the furniture industry, does not merely certify the product line or range. It assesses the environmental and social impact of a furniture product in the built environment while simultaneously taking into account a company’s processes, social actions, energy usage, material selection and human and ecosystem health impacts.

The certification and recognition is an important milestone in the furniture industry considering the unorganized and traditional nature of the sector. This certification stands testimony to how the industry is moving towards a better organized and socially-responsible sector, with Godrej Interio leading the charge.

Given the amount of contact time consumers spend with their furniture at offices and homes, Godrej Interio focuses on health and well-being issues through ergonomic design of products and careful use of raw materials which aid in creating comfortable, safe, and healthy work environments for consumers.

Godrej Interio has Ergonomists, who overlook the deployment of ergonomic design principles in product development. The team has also designed a product selection tool, the Ergometer, which helps the customer choose the chair that is most suitable to their body dimensions and the task being performed which are currently used at all Godrej Interio knowledge centers and at 37 company showrooms.

Understanding the growing need for “greening” of Godrej Interio products, processes, and supply chain, a Green Initiative Cell has been established to drive the developmental work for green products, processes and services at Godrej Interio.

In the past Godrej Interio also employed a tool called the Green Assurance Card (GAC) to convey the “Green” quotient of products, which was designed to evaluate the environment performance of a product on aspects related to recycled content, recyclability, use of low

emitting material, ease of assembly and green certifications for its existing key product lines.
