Man has battled climatic extremes for millennia - be it the icy wastes of the cold

Tundra or the extreme heat of the Sahara desert. Here in India ancient people made use of large manual fans, thatched roofs and mud huts. But in today’s modern world, we have to acknowledge the challenges that come with providing HVAC services to a large, robust economy.

Of course, when developing HVAC solutions one must keep in mind the specific climatic conditions of the environment surrounding the building. India is a climatically diverse country with three major climatic zones - hot-dry, warm-humid and composite. This is without taking into account the spells of extreme cold that affects the Delhi and NCR region during winter.

We take a look at how HVAC can assist in coping with the extreme climatic conditions in India.

Warm-HumidIn India, the air conditioning system consumes most of the energy that a building needs in its operation. In such a case, a good HVAC system is one which reduces energy consumption in the air conditioning effort. Cities like Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata fall under this climatic category. Therefore while designing a HVAC system one should include the following parameters:

Reduce dependence on the air conditioning system in the building while designing.

Recognise spaces inside the building which do not require air conditioning, as reduction in air conditioned spaces will reduce the AC consumption load and the energy needed for the same.

Optimise the cooling load by selecting interior and outdoor design conditions specified in National Building Code of India 2005. The code includes a DB (Dry bulb temperature) and a RH (Relative humidity) for a variety of spaces, from restaurants to operation theatres.

The cooling load can also be optimised by implementing the required ventilation rate and

pre-cooling the fresh air required to maintain good indoor air quality through heat/energy recovery from cool exhaust air

Another way to boost energy efficiency is through specifications in the Air Handling Unit (AHU) - a device used to condition and circulate air as part of an HVAC system.

One way to do this is by equipping the air system design to operate in 100% fresh air mode. Heat usually builds up in buildings when the air conditioning system is not working. This heat build-up affects the system’s operation the following day by increasing the cooling demand and therefore increasing energy consumption. The AHU supplies fresh outdoor air that is necessary to flush out this heat build-up. In order to maximise the effectiveness of the air flushing; all AHUs should be designed so that it operates at 100% fresh air mode to remove the heat.

Energy can also be saved by using cool outside air to freshen the indoor space. When the outside air is sufficiently cool, it doesn’t require additional conditioning. This portion of the air-side economiser control scheme is called free cooling. Air-side economisers can reduce HVAC energy costs.

Although all AHUs are designed for peak load condition, most operate at part load conditions. If the operating capacity of the AHUs is un-synchronized with the cooling demand, it leads to energy wastage. To combat this, AHUs should

have a provision to vary the air quantity supply in response to the varying cooling demand with a minimum supply air capacity up to 50% of the design supply air capacity. This can be achieved by installing variable frequency drives on constant speed fans fitted in AHUs.

T h e e n e r g y c o n s u m i n g component in AHUs is the fan, and fan efficiency plays an important role in enhancing overall efficiency of the air conditioning systems. A minimum fan efficiency of 65% for fans less than 6 bhp (break horse power) and 80% for 6bhp and

larger is an ideal measure to reduce energy use.

Fresh outdoor air is required to maintain an acceptable indoor air quality. Generally outdoor air is at a higher temperature compared to the return air from the air conditioned area, which increases the cooling load. Therefore, it is better to pre-cool fresh air before it mixes with return air, thus reducing its impact on the cooling load and energy consumption. Pre-cooling of fresh air can be done with the help of Energy Recovery Wheel (ERW) or enthalpy wheel.

Energy recovery is aided by drawing outside air across half of the enthalpy wheel and drawing exhaust air across the other half. Latent heat and sensible heat are transferred from the hotter and moist outside air to the cooler and dry exhaust air during summer conditions. Efficient motors are another way to boost energy savings.

Hot-DryEvaporative CoolersWhile not as demanding as warm-humid climates, HVAC for hot-dry conditions does face its own set of challenges. In these climates, there is greater need for cooling that effectively leads to larger energy consumption. One means by which this can be combated is through the use of evaporative cooling. Not only is evaporative cooling one of the oldest forms of climate control but also a highly sought-after alternative to traditional air conditioning. Ahmedabad is an apt example of a city with this kind of a climate.

Economical Evaporative coolers cost less to both operate and maintain than their air conditioning counterparts. In addition to being inexpensive to install, evaporative coolers also do not require anything more than minimal seasonal maintenance. Traditional cooling devices, however, require regular cleaning of the air filter to ensure the unit is operating at maximum efficiency. Evaporative coolers also use less energy while operating when compared to typical A/C units.

It is important to remember that due to the evaporation process, an evaporative cooler is most efficient in an area that is both hot and dry, without a lot of moisture in the air.

Moisture levels Evaporative coolers use their simple cooling technology to inject moisture

into the air, cooling your home or office through evaporation. This added moisture can keep your eyes and skin from drying out. Traditional air conditioners remove moisture from the air, which can be difficult on your eyes and can cause your skin to dry out and crack. If you suffer from asthma or allergies, an evaporative cooler can help with your symptoms. Dry air can aggravate allergies and asthma, especially in children and the elderly, so an evaporative cooler and the added moisture it provides can be particularly beneficial.

Environmental concernsWhile some t r ad i t iona l a i r conditioning units emit a particular level of carbon dioxide, evaporative coolers emit a much lower level. Evaporative swamp coolers also use less energy, which not only keeps costs down, but is better for the environment.

By using water as the working fluid one can avoid the use of ozone-destroying chlorofluorocarbons and hydro chlorofluorocarbons. If you’re worried about noise pollution, then an evaporative cooler is a better option. Evaporative units operate at a much quieter level than traditional air conditioners, making them a perfect cooling option for the bedroom, office, or any other area where you have to monitor noise levels. In contrast, air conditioners are typically much louder when operating.

The direct evaporative cooling (DEC) system can significantly improve the thermal performance in building cooling and ventilation with minimal energy consumption. However even with evaporative cooling methods there are still costs involved and there is further room for improvement in this system.

Making it betterIn DEC the lowest temperature obtained is the wet-bulb temperature

of the outside air. Therefore, the temperature of the supply air after cooling would be just on the edge of comfort. In the mean time it may pick up a few degrees in passing through the space to probably go beyond the comfort zone. A blend of air conditioning technologies can offer effective solutions for energy conservation and thermal comfort. One version involves the use of nocturnal radiation and indirect evaporative cooling which has been shown to improve comfort conditions. Another one used a dew point evaporative cooling system with the key objective of reducing the temperature of the outdoor air leaving the system without any oisture variation.

Hybrid evaporative cooling (HEC) systems One approach to consider is the use of hybrid cooling systems. A promising idea stems from the possibility of increasing the utilisation potential of an evaporative cooling system

by the integration of the air-to-air sensible heat exchanger and cooling coil with the DEC process. In such a system, the air is first cooled sensibly, i.e. without any moisture addition, in two stages. In the first stage an air-to-air sensible heat exchanger is used to reduce the dry-bulb temperature of the air entering the cooling coil through the energy transfer between the building return airstream and ambient fresh air. In the second stage the air is further cooled sensibly by a cooling coil. The cooling coil gets its water supply from a cooling tower. Then the air passes through the DEC system to achieve a lower temperature. Consequently, in the hybrid evaporative cooling (HEC) system the lowest temperature obtained can be lower than the wet-bulb temperature of the outside air.

The cooling efficiency of the combined system may be greater than a conventional system. This is because the minimum temperature that can be attained for the single evaporative cooler is the wet-bulb temperature of the incoming air while for the combined system the outlet temperature of the air stream can be lower than the inlet wet-bulb temperature.

This HVAC system improves the operation of classical direct evaporative ones by integrating two addit ional sensible heat devices, namely an air-to-air heat exchanger and a cooling coil, after the humidification process. A study shows that this new HEC system offers an energy saving potential of up to 52% while maintaining the thermal comfort of the building.

Ind i rec t /d i re c t evapora t i ve cooling Another one with major benefits is the indirect/direct evaporative cooling system. This system has two major elements.

Traditional direct evaporative cooling at the intake draws air though a water curtain, cooling and humidifying the incoming air stream. The closed loop indirect portion is a heat pipe /heat exchanger at the exhaust to extract waste heat and drive cooling cycles. The system typically uses 100% outside air.

Indirect/direct evaporative cooling (IDEC) adds some humidity to air which may be desirable in hot dry climates. By using 100% outside air, the system does not recycle indoor pollutants and helps remove outdoor pollutants in the incoming air stream. In institutional buildings, these systems have been able to function at ambient temperatures up to 103ºF without additional chilled water. The system effectiveness varies over a range of 108-111% in different climatic conditions.

India’s growing economy has resulted in huge demands on our energy resources. Buildings are

amongst the highest consumers of energy. They account for 8% of the country’s total utilisation in terms of power and it is growing steadily at about 11 to 12% per annum. Most commercial buildings in India have an Energy Performance Index (EPI) of 200 to 400 kWh/sq.m/year as compared to buildings in Europe and America that have EPIs of less than 150 kWh/sq.m/year.

Despite such dreary numbers, there is still some cause for hope. India has over 2,380 registered green building projects and is amongst the top five countries in the world involved in spearheading the global green building movement. Several businesses, especially in the I.T. and services sector have taken the lead in exploring and implementing s u s t a i n a b l e a l t e r n a t i v e s t o energy generation.

H e r e a r e s o m e H VA C innovations implemented in these green buildings that have increased their energy efficiency and brought down costs significantly.

Solar air conditioning - Turbo Energy Limited, ChennaiThe solar air conditioning in Turbo Energy Limited in Chennai uses solar power to condition or control the air in the building by passive solar, solar thermal energy conversion and photovoltaic conversion in which sunlight is converted to electricity. The IGP office in Gulbarga uses a passive downdraught evaporative cooling (PDEC) system where air passes through a layer of water in the wind tower. This cools down

the water and that water is sent to the interiors of the building.

Hybrid HVAC system - Olympia Tech Park, ChennaiBy effective usage of grey water in the building, Olympia Techpark has been able to meet its heating and cooling requirements. The complex has a dual plumbing line where the treated grey water is used for flushing or irrigation. With a HVAC system they are able to have cool, indoor comfort when it’s hot outside providing a year-round indoor comfort solution.

Radiant cooling technology - Infosys, Pocharam campusThe Infosys Pocharam campus has an air conditioning system which is 30-40% more efficient than the conventional air conditioning systems. This is possible with the radiant cooling technology where a temperature-controlled surface cools indoor temperatures by removing sensible heat and more than half of the heat transfer occurs through thermal radiation. This has helped the coefficient of performance (CoP) spike up as high as 8.

with the products designed in line with users’ expectations. Kalebodur injected a new dimension into architectural designs. With Kale, the time spent in bathrooms becomes more comfortable and pleasurable, while Edilcuoghi and Edilgres - the company’s premier brands, are the reflection of an Italian touch on the designs. Moreover, Kale has partnered with Hansa, Germany’s leading fixtures brand, to introduce the most advanced designs and water systems at the fair.

The subtle elegance of Seramik Parke Kaleseramik reinforced its position as a master innovator in ceramics with their new Seramik Parke product group which consists of the most delicate examples of this trend. Available for use in any part of a household; including bathrooms, living rooms and bedrooms, these ceramics are resistant and durable while drawing attention with easy-to-clean, hygienic properties. The company believes that under their Çanakkale Seramik brand the household use of ceramics that look like natural wood will expand further.

Smart solutions driven by smart philosophyKaleseramik aims to create innovative solutions and spaces. Rather than simply offering products, they offer consumers and business partners friendly solutions, tapping into the efficiency-oriented and eco-friendly products designed with their ‘smart’ philosophy under the Kale brand. Last year they won the Golden Plumb, the ‘Oscar of the Turkish Building Industry’, awarded by Yapı-Endüstri Merkezi (YEM - Building Information Center). Moreover, the Kale Aquasmart toilet, a revolution in the field of low water consumption, received the second prize under the Environmentally Friendly Application Category at the

Environment and Energy Awards granted by the Istanbul Chamber of Industry.

The new ‘Kale 360’ The Kale 360 program was rolled out last year, blazing a trail in the world bathroom industry. Its new release was introduced to consumers at this year’s Unicera. Making consumers’ lives easier, the new release of Kale 360 allows users to arrange their bathrooms’ layouts much easily. One can select from thousands of Çanakkale Seramik and Kalebodur products, include favourite ones in the layout and display the real-life version of the bathroom.

A brand new design experience After receiving the “Silver Stevie” at the 2014 Stevie Awards (one of the most prestigious business awards in the globe) for the ground breaking Kale 360 program, Kale has taken it to the next level by making the program easily accessible on mobile, tablet and web-enabled devices. The new release of Kale 360 allows everyone to design their bathrooms much easily, accompanied by near-real images. Users can display the product of their choice in 3D and animated formats and navigate inside the bathroom by flipping the buttons to the right and left. They can also simply click to calculate the price for the bathrooms they have designed and make an online request for a quote from the nearest Kale point of sale.

A 3D bathroom experience Another novelty introduced by Kaleseramik at the fair was a 3D Bathroom application. Four personal spaces that could only be displayed through glasses were created. Once visitors put on the glasses, they felt as though they could comfortably navigate inside a bathroom and examine every corner of the space. With this application, Kaleseramik aims to offer consumers a space where they have more of a voice in design.Contact www.kale.com.tr/en The Spirit Bathroom Design by Kale

1,240 products. Only 81 entries were bestowed the honour of the top award, the “Red Dot: Best of the Best”, while 122 won Honourable Mentions for a particularly well-executed aspect of design work.

The jury consisted of 38 design professions spanning 25 countries. They included new members such as Danish fashion designer David Andersen, German materials expert Dr. Sascha Peters and Wen-long Chen, CEO of the Taiwan Design Center. Together they discussed the 4,928 entries in situ.

The jury comprised of some more familiar faces such as Malaysian-born star designer Dato’ Professor Jimmy Choo, German product design icon Professor Werner Aisslinger and tangerine founder Martin Darbyshire from the UK.

The jury worked together to rate each individual product according to functionality, degree of innovation, formal quality, ecological compatibility and other criteria. After the strict but fair selection process, around 3,500 products went away empty handed. The products participating in the competition originated from 56 countries in total.

The judges considered the following criteria while selecting the laureates for the award - the degree of innovation, functionality, formal qua l i ty, e rgonomics , durability, symbolic and emotional content , product periphery, se l f-explanatory qual ity, and ecological compatibility.

In order to respond to this year’s diversity in a professional manner, the number of product categories was increased to 31. New categories such as Materials and Surfaces and the new independent

ca t egor i e s fo r Watches and Jewellery allowed for a discerning evaluation process.

Founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award, Dr. Peter Zec said, “Innovation is not always visible with the naked eye. Often it is hidden aspects- such as a refined technology inside the product or an improved combination of materials, which constitute a lucid and sometimes brilliant new development. We can therefore count ourselves lucky that year after year we are able to appoint an expert, experienced and high-profile jury that doesn’t miss a beat.”

The winners of the Red Dot Award : Product Des ign can expect an extensive package of advantages: They use the winner label as a marketing tool and are integrated in the international PR activities of Red Dot. The Red Dot Design Museum Essen exhibits the award-winning products for at least one year, and the Red Dot Design Yearbook presents the year’s best designs.

All of the products and their makers are also featured in the online presentation and in the Red Dot 21 global design directory as well as in the Red Dot App.

The glamorous award ceremony for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 will take place on Monday, 29 June 2015. The laureates of the Red Dot: Best of the Best, which is the highest

Imagine coming back home on a hot summer day and having to wait for your air conditioner to

cool the room. Or maybe you are on holiday and realise that your cooler has been on all this time. What if your home’s climate system could know what you want instantly and alter its settings for your immediate comfort? This is the question that many climate control app developers hope to provide solutions for.

The use of climate control apps is the latest trend sweeping the global HVAC segment. This is a part of larger technological developments such as smart home automation and the Internet of Things. The blend of state-of-the-art HVAC systems with user-friendly apps has provided a convenient solution to controlling your home’s climate.

Some of the leaders in the field of climate control system and home automation are Nest and Honeywell.

Climate Control With A Touch The growing trend of climate control apps is slowly making its way into India. BY ALYSSA LOBO

The Nest thermostat and app

Both the Nest app and Honeywell’s Total Connect Comfort app are freely available on platforms such as iOS and Android. These apps are connected to smart thermostats that gather information about how you use them. You can also give it a schedule and target temperatures. They can be linked to multiple wireless thermostats from each brand. These apps have the potential to bring in huge savings through optimum energy consumption.

The Total Connect Comfort app also gives you a five day weather forecast so you can control your home temperature when you are away. It even helps you find a licensed HVAC contractor in case you require

repairs. Honeywell’s Lyric app can program the thermostat to a set temperature when you are at home and to another temperature when you are away. Lyric uses your smartphone location to make temperature adjustments as needed.

India is slowly moving in the direction of automation through apps in the HVAC sector. Recently Mahindra launched i t s Blue Sense App for iOS users for the XUV500. The app allows user to connect to the vehicle via Bluetooth and control features related to the infotainment, climate

control systems, among other vehicle information.

But the biggest development in this sector is the announcement of Onida’s new range of i-Genius air conditioners. The AC comes with smart features such as Smart Sleep Manager and Self-Diagnosis Manager. The Onida Aircon app allows complete control of your AC from anywhere in the world. The marketing campaign for this new brand is yet to launch but the future of home climate automation in India looks poised for huge growth.Contactwww.onida.com/i-geniuswww.mytotalconnectcomfort.com www.nest.com

Wi t h t e m p e r a t u r e s rising every summer, air conditioners have

turned from a welcome comfort to an absolute necessity. But broken or damaged equipment mean that at some point we will all be facing the heat. We have found two low cost ways to make sure you keep your cool - both for the master handy-man and for those who want a quick-fix.

Box Fan and CoolerThis version of the air conditioner requires a bit of effort but is suitable for those who live in places with relatively temperate climate and just want brief relief during the summer. It is also ideal if your air conditioner is being repaired and you need to cool a medium sized room.

You wi l l requ i re - a box fan, copper tubing, z ip t ies , plumber putty (M-Seal) and a fountain pump.

Keeping Cool The Jugaad Way We take a look at some low cost HVAC solutions. BY ALYSSA LOBO

Unscrew the front gridded panel of your box fan.

Twist some s ix mil l imetre d i ame t e r coppe r tub ing in concentric circles starting at the centre of the exterior side of your grid. Attach the end of a length of copper tubing to the centre of the grid using zip ties.

Twist the tubing into a tiny circle. Continue twisting the tubing around the original circle until you have a series of concentric circles.

Connect the tube to the grid with zip ties. Make sure there is plenty of tubing attached to your fan grid, but not so much that air cannot pass through the spaces between the tubing.

Screw the front, with the tubing attached to the exterior, back onto the box fan.

At tach one end o f a 9 .5 millimetre clear pliable tube to the fountain pump and the other end to the top end of your copper tubing. The ideal tubing for this project is the type of tubing used in fish tanks.

Roll M-Seal in your hands to form a strip. Wrap the putty around the connection between the hose and tubing and press the putty to seal the connection.

Connect the other piece of 9.5 millimetre plastic tubing to the bottom end of the copper tubing. Seal the connection with plumber’s putty. Wait an hour to allow the M-Seal to dry.

Fill the cooler with ice water. Submerge the unconnected end of the second plastic tube beneath the water. Place the fountain pump in the cooler.

Put a towel under your fan. The towel will catch the condensation that will form on the outside of the copper pipes.

Plug in the fountain pump and turn on the fan.

The Jugaad Air conditionerThis is a lo-fi version of the more sophisticated fan cooler above and is useful when you want a simple solution to a broken air conditioner or if you want to cool a small room. It is so easy that it can work as a simple science project to keep kids busy.

You will need - A few one- litre bottles, salt, a bowl, a small table fan.

Use one or more two-litre bottles and fill them mostly full of water (70%) and salt (10%). Leave 20% of the volume empty for expansion. The salt lowers the temperature at which the water freezes, allowing you to make the ice even colder.

Freeze the liquid in the bottles and then place them in a large bowl (to catch dripping condensation). Position a fan to blow on them. As the salty ice in the bottles melts, the air around them cools and the fan will blow that air at you.

The water and salt in the bottles can be refrozen every night and used repeatedly.
