The world economy is slowly recovering from a slowdown and the upheavals in the

global market in recent years. While China’s economy has been slowing down, many smaller Asian countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand are gaining prominence.

India still has an edge over most countries due to fairly low production costs, but there is still much that needs to be done to boost India’s manufacturing sector.

To this end the Indian government launched the Make in India program to attract companies to increase the production of high quality manufactured goods.

Make in India aims at increasing the country’s GDP and tax revenues by manufacturing products that meet high quality standards and minimising the impact on the environment.

Fostering innovation, protecting intellectual property, and enhancing skill development are the other aims of the program according to the Make in India website.

There a re s eve ra l Ind ian companies within the building products industry that are already on the path to growth, either through boosting their manufacturing

Indian companies have grown tremendously in this sector. Some like the Jaquar Group, Cera, Kajaria Ceramics, Somany Tiles and HSIL Limited have multiple brands and are leaders in this segment.

Parryware is one of India’s leading manufacturer of bathroom products, from EID Parry, one of the country’s oldest business entities. In 2006, it entered into a joint venture with Roca Corporación, Spain, and became a Roca Group subsidiary in 2008 and turned into a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Roca Group in 2011.

This year the company is planning to increase exports out of India as the cost of manufacturing in the country has become competitive.

Currently exports account for around one to two per cent of the total sales, and it may go up to three or four per cent.

Earlier this year the company also completed the expansion of its Kassar plant in Haryana. It exports its products worldwide with a presence at some prominent international ceramics fairs. The company also has a strong presence in tier two and tier three cities in India.

HSIL is known primarily for its sanitaryware brand Hindware. Over the past year HSIL has aggressively marketed Hindware’s new fittings segment with a massive campaign featuring Shah Rukh Khan.

HSIL is looking to double production capacity this fiscal. To this end they have two sanitaryware plants, one in Bahadurgarh Haryana with a capacity of 1.8 million pieces and the other in Bibinagar, Telangana

with a capacity of 2.0 million pieces. The combined capacity thus is 3.8 million pieces. “Both the plants at present are undergoing Brownfield expansion as we are adding one lakh piece module at Bahadurgarh and 3-lakh piece module at Bibinagar plant. In addition, we have already announced our land purchase in Gujarat where we propose a Greenfield sanitaryware plant of 1.2 million piece capacity”, says Sandip Somany, Joint Managing Director, HSIL Limited.

Indian handicrafts are known the world over for their superior quality, beauty and artistry.

Despite this, Indian handicrafts tend to be stuck in the past, recreating traditional designs and motifs. Thus they are relegated to the status of tourist souvenirs.

Yet many Indian designers, both up-and-comers, as well as established names, are turning to Indian handicrafts to create innovative and award-winning products.

Here is a look at some of the companies and designers who are changing people’s perceptions of the crafts.

Sandeep Sangaru Studio Sandeep Sangaru is the owner of Sangaru Design Studio, a multidisciplinary design consultancy firm and Sangaru Design Objects Pvt Ltd., a manufacturing company based in Bangalore, India.

Sangaru graduated from the Indian National Institute of Design (Ahmedabad) with a background in mechanical engineering. His multidisciplinary background led him to explore different mediums and materials.

Sangaru’s first collection, ‘Truss-me’ is a range of bamboo furniture for which he won the Red Dot Design award - Best of the Best 2009. It also won the Grand Award and the Gold Award at Design for Asia, Hong Kong Design Centre, 2011.

Through this collection he highlighted bamboo’s suitability as furniture material. The range is based on a construction technique that uses solid pole bamboo and split bamboo in a typical way and these laminated modules act like a truss, a very light load bearing structure.

Sangaru was also recognised as British Council’s Young Creative Entrepreneur in the Design for Social Impact category. He designs,

RhizomeRhizome is a sustainable design firm working out of Ahmedabad, founded by designer Rebecca Reubens. A large part of her work has been in the development sector, where she has worked with multi-governmental institutions, governments, NGOs, SMEs and communities in Europe, Asia and Africa. Bamboo and rattan are her core areas of expertise.

Rhizome takes its cue from c r a f t p r a c t i c e , and de s i gn s products that are made from local materials, do not require a capital-intensive infrastructure, and offer employment to local communities, including marginalized groups such as women.

An example of their sustainable products is the Wishboo chair. This chair reinterprets Wegner’s iconic Wishbone chair in bamboo.

The design strategy included staying true to the logic of the form; using bamboo’s properties as carefully as Wegner used wood’s properties and adjusting the aesthetics and scale to make it recognizable but not identical.Contactweb: www.rhizomedesign.co.in

Anu Tandon Viera designs alongside weavers, printers and other craftsmen to give form to a concept

She founded The Retyrement Plan with the intent of using materials that are not considered beautiful or exclusive, in the classic sense and converting them into well designed, appealing products.

These products also incorporate the waste that is generated by so many industries.

Viera has a hands-on approach and designs alongside weavers, printers and other craftsmen to give form to a concept. The materials used are all either recycled or sustainable.

The tyres are washed, sanitised and then worked upon. The ropes made out of recycled tailoring waste or plastic wrapper waste are carefully coordinated to be woven into weaves that are durable and will come together in a cohesive manner to result in a unique and well detailed product.

Jenny PintoJenny Pinto started making handmade paper in 1998. After working as an advertising professional for almost 17 years, she wanted to engage in something that would help her reconnect with the earth. Hence she turned to papermaking, which was her first step towards creating lamps.

Pinto prefers making the paper herself; the paper is made from natural fibres generated from waste derived from agriculture and the rural cottage industry - banana, mulberry, kora grass, jute, sisa.

The paper that is made in her studio is used to make a range of lights, stationery and home accessories. She also make site-specific light sculptures.

Anjali RanaAnjali Rana meticulously handcrafts home l inen, accessor ies and embroidered felt rugs, collectively for her brand called Mohabbat. After doing Fashion Designing from NIFT she enrolled for Textile Designing at NID, Ahemdabad. It was here that she got involved on a project with the regional artisans in Mundra, Gujarat, and learnt of a possibility to fuse felt seamlessly and give it paper-like raw edges. The Loka col lect ion uses leftover sari silk yarn collected from independent sari weavers all across the south of India, mixed with bits of gota, chanderi and other fabrics. Similar coloured yarns are clubbed together in colour families: purples, blues, greens. Once on the loom, each knot is hand woven. Once the base is laid out, rugs are then re-dyed, washed, coloured, faded, tempered and then left out in the sun to achieve the perfect look. Thus, each rug is unique, and though similar in design,

Until now, none of the European players that exist in the appliances segment in India have real ly customised their range to suit Indian requirements - they bring in appliances with European features which may or may not work for all the customers.

What is the pricing strategy of the Nagold range?

The Nagold range was introduced to fill the glaring gap that existed in the market between the super-premium and entry-level segments.

What is the gap that Hafele aims to fill with this range?

The built-in appliances space in India had players that existed at the super premium segment (high-end imported brands from Europe) of the market and those that existed at the entry level positions (local brands); there was no one really present in the middle providing a strong value proposition to the customers.

The objective behind launching the Nagold range was to fill this gap and bring in a range that offers superior quality appliances but at affordable prices. It has taken us over a year to put together this range taking into consideration the specific needs of the Indian

Germany, bordering the northern Black Forest; incidentally, it also is the place of origin of the 93-year-old Häfele Empire. At this year’s FuoriSalone in Milan, Axor WaterDream 2016 presented five original

spouts by designers David Adjaye, Werner Ai s s l inger, FRONT, GamFrate s i and Jean-Mar ie Massaud at the Axor showroom in Milan.

The range bui lds on the technological capabilities of the Axor U-Base. The Axor U-Base is a universal fixture base that allows a simple and seamless connection to its counterpart -the spout: from standardised (e.g. Axor Starck V) to bespoke fittings, exchanging or upgrading spouts is possible without sanitary installation. In addition, the Axor U-Base offers the security, longevity, and perfect water control of an Axor product.

It served as the starting point for this year’s Axor WaterDream design partners. “It supported the expansion of our creative horizons beyond purely industrial toward more individualized manufacturing“, says Jean-Marie Massaud, long-time Axor design partner.

Jean-Marie Massaud’s Mimicry suggests a water-releasing object in complete harmony with the architectural landscape. Material (marb le ) and form ( s imple , geometric shapes) suggest an

Within this creative brief, Axor invited world-renowned design partners to present their visions for the meaning of water within the living spaces of tomorrow.

Together with Axor, David Adjaye, Werner Aisslinger, FRONT, GamFrate s i and Jean-Mar ie Massaud designed unique spouts that through their materiality, form and function, give a new emotionality and value to the tap itself and the water passing through it. Axor presents these five original pieces.

Each architect and designer experimented with alternative materials and forms to celebrate water and its path on a functional, and on an emotional level.

In British architect David Adjaye’s concept Ritual, water appears from under a granite inlay that is cradled by a wedge-shaped, precious metal (bronze) spout. The water, always in view, is ritualized: from source, to flow, and finally, to descent.

German des igner Werner Aisslinger’s conceptual spout, The Sea and the Shore, is a hybrid consisting of a fountain and a shelf - a space for rituality and

inherent connection to water and achieve an emotional enhancement of both object and resource.

Zen, designed by the Danish-Italian duo GamFratesi, reinterprets the classic Japanese wood fountain.

With its minimalistic form and water flow, it achieves a tranquil and meditative spirit, which depicts the honest connection between nature and water.

creating, designing, manufacturing and commercialising all kinds of goods and their makers, so they can be recognised by the local community, the city of Mumbai and the rest of the world.

Its main mission is to employ design as a tool to promote social change and innovation, and to challenge the negative perception of informal settlements around the world.

The Charleston Chair is a classic Chesterfield sofa that has been turned on its end, playing with the viewer’s mindset and expectations

of work from other nationally and internationally recognized designers. These include, amongst others, Jurgen Bey, Bertjan Pot, Maarten Baas, Jaime Hayon, Neri & Hu, Joost van Bleiswijk, Studio Job and Nika Zupanc.

In addition to their main brand, the company also has a brand of luxury carpets called Moooi Carpets. All the carpets combine an endless mix of colours thanks to the use of a ground breaking high definition Chromojet printer and its accurate tones, which generate

a playful illusion of depth. The collection counts on a broad variety of possibilities, being composed by three different families: the Signature, Moooi Works and Your Own Design. Each family group offers a number of different solutions to meet the many demands of projects and individual taste.

During Salone del Mobile’s 55th edition, Moooi presented its products at via Savona 56, Milan. The centre of this year’s presentation is Moooi’s new collection: 22 new pieces majestically presented in beautiful

compositions on pedestals and carefully placed inside a mysteriously dark and seductive ballroom.

Here’s a look at some of the most innovative and exciting products from their exhibition.

Charleston ChairPossibly Moooi’s quirkiest product is co-founder Marcel Wanders’ Charleston Chair. This is a classic Chesterfield sofa that has been turned on its end so it points almost vertically upwards. The seat is slender and elongated, while it plays with the viewer’s mindset and expectations. The traditional armrest becomes

a very comfortable seat. A metal swivel stand holds the sofa upright, allowing the user to sit on the inner edge of the lower arm and use the seat cushions as a back rest. Moooi itself describes the chair as “…having decided to take dancing lessons to another level.”

NR2NR2 Medium by Bertjan Pot is a throwback to one of Moooi’s classic products, the Non Random Lamp. However there is enough novelty in this product to differentiate it from its predecessor. Inspired by the Non Random Lights collection,

Pot has rediscovered the ingeniously structured web and wrapped it tightly around a completely different light. The new NR2 Medium is a bright bubble of fine, glossy fiberglass threads that form a symmetric, elongated network of clarity and lightness.

The fibreglass threads are finer while the shape of the lamp is more elongated and symmetric, forming a harmonious bubble of glossy light. A LED lamp blends into the sphere, generating a broad light which radiates a warn atmosphere.

Amami Sofa Lorenza Bozzoli’s Amami Sofa is an elegant, cosy seat with fringed, soft, light-hearted beauty. The generously sized sofa makes it ideal for both quiet relaxation and social gatherings. Ombre gradients pattern the fringe surrounding the collection of Amami seats. The collection also comes with a series of different-sized poufs and stools.

Perch LightThe Perch Light is a balancing sculptural light made of folded paper and brass. The lamp takes the form of an abstract bird which appears to be delicately balanced on its metal perch. The bird is illuminated through contact with the perch and this lets the bird balance and swing without any cables whilst maintaining luminance. The design was inspired by nature and in particular, the elegance and beauty of a bird sitting on its perch.

The bird has been precisely counterbalanced to sit in a resting position on its perch unless activated into gentle motion by wind or touch. Umut Yamac created the Perch Light family- six sculptural abstract lamps made from folded paper and brass.

edginess and acquires a sinuous, flexuous, comfortable look. The contours of the sofa flow into the marble seat leading to a marriage of opposites: soft and hard, humble and grand, light and heavy.

It is also available with a marble body and an upholstered fabric seat.

Moooi CarpetsAlong with a variety of new Signature Rugs, Moooi Carpets presented instruments that were implemented in the creation of individual requirements. The company offers customers a chance to draft their own designs through ‘Your Own Design’ category.

Moooi Carpets also showcased its latest range of luxury carpets. The Signature Rugs collections includes 22 rugs by created in partnership with renowned designers and fashion brands such as Marcel Wanders, Klaus Haapaniemi, Ross Lovegrove, Maison Christian Lacroix and Valerio Sommella.

The hi definition, photo realistic designs are achieved with the use of a High Definition Chromojet P, an extremely precise printing machine able to reproduce almost every colour nuance in existence.

Maison Christ ian Lacroix envisioned different artistic styles connected to their historical moments in the Malmaison and Palais Royal carpets. The fashion house made use of bright floral prints, hypnotizing patterns to create a touch of glamour.

Edward van Vliet’s Dutch Sky presents a fusion of east, west and

typically Dutch delftware images, while Clouds is an ornamental pattern of puffy clouds. Following the decorative path, the designer’s Zigzag transforms the looks of a space with its fine webbing of geometric lines.

Taking the collection back to the present, the importance of digital communication is explored by Noortje van Eekelen with the disguised emoticons in Dazzling Dialogues and a motif of wifi signals in ‘Home is where the wifi is’.

Valerio Sommella’s Furugs combine traditional carpet patterns wi th a contemporary image definition, provoking the illusion of walking on soft and fluffy surfaces.

La Caleta creates an interesting light flare through its hand woven structure. It is a tradition in Mexico to weave any product or form. Studio davidpompa is working with a family owned

There has been an increase in the premium segment in the sanitary ware industry. Who according to you is the leader in this segment and which are some their best-selling products?

In Grohe, their showers have better performance compared to the rest. Their showers are more popular, especially their F-15 shower.

name. Deu, with her team partner Rayvin Thingnam have invented an environmentally friendly building material called ‘Green Wood’. Now Deu is the only young person on UNICEF’s ‘Wearables For Good’ judging panel.

Rice Up To The Challenge An Indian teenager has developed a building material that could make buildings more sustainable and benefit rural health. BY ALYSSA LOBO

that challenges secondary school students to develop an innovative business concept that addresses a social need. Under the guidance and support of an HP e-mentor from Singapore, the team developed a revolutionary building material, made out of rice husk boards. The team will buy rice husk from farmers and create a building material, which they called “Green Wood”.

“A trip to my farm house made me observe the burning of rice waste was causing air pollution, which inspired me to come up with an idea that solves this problem,” says Deu.

The team’s invention could have far reaching impact on the

sustainable building. More than half of the world’s people eat rice as a staple food, and the crop dominates cereal production in many low-income countries. In India, 47% of the population was employed in agriculture in 2012.

The threshing of rice produces unwanted husks and straw, and the options for disposal are limited: burning, composting or feeding to animals on the farm. The residues have no commercial value, so the farmers end up burning the rice waste - causing air pollution, killing crop-friendly insects and making the topmost layer of soil partially infertile due to loss of nutrients.

Breathing this polluted air is obviously extremely unhealthy for humans, and it can also severely impact animals.

Deu wanted to address this problem by developing a product

that uses rice husks and straw as raw materials. The main challenges were: help reduce deforestation; provide an extra source of income for farmers; and provide eco-friendly, low-cost housing for low-income people.

To address these issues, Deu and Thingnam developed Green Wood - a substitute for wood, made from unwanted rice waste that can serve as a building material for low-cost housing.

Green Wood creates affordable, waterproof particleboards that can be used in environmentally sustainable housing. This material is fungi- and mold-proof, and therefore can

withstand any kind of weather. It can also be used to make low-cost and sturdy school furniture.

Green Wood cou ld be a revolutionary building material. It could help provide housing to the poor as well as improve rural livelihoods, by creating a market for rice waste, so farmers can make extra income.

The product can furthermore greatly reduce air pollution as well as deforestation of the rainforest areas where many hardwood species grow; deforestation has been linked to climate change and has a devastating impact on biodiversity and the water cycle.
