The versatile Fisher & Paykel introduces its innovative range of Induction Cooktops. Equipped with PowerBoost and GentleHeat, Fisher & Paykel ensures a tidy kitchen with a flat ceramic glass surface that is easy to wipe, simplifying the cleaning process.

Induction cooking is a safe, advanced, efficient and an economical cooking technology that works on the concept of electromagnetic vibrations that generate heat directly in the pan, unlike other ceramic hobs which indirectly heats the glass surface.

Due to the usage of induction technology, it does not heat the hob but the pan. Once the pot has been removed from the burner, the temperature of the hob surface drops rapidly - due to this instant responsiveness of the induction zone there is no danger of the pot contents boiling over, sparing the inconvenient and unpleasant chore of extra cleaning.

With a total of 9 heat settings, each cooking zone has positive and negative soft-touch controls, with quick response rates that shorten the cooking time and provide more accuracy.

Talking about her collection, Sanjana adds, “I felt Bali and Java produced goods are of a very high quality so I chose to work with the artisans there. Besides they are one of the largest producers of eco-friendly furniture and the wood used is of high quality too. The skill of weaving and carving of the Balinese artisans has come down from generations and their finish is extremely neat and clean; with the high quality of materials used, these are a great value for money. My favourite in the artifact range is the Buddha which enhances any given space. At Nostalgia, we have Buddhas in almost every position, shape, form, size and material depending on the placement. We also do customised furniture for clients provided they give us adequate production time.”

Nostalgia’s clients are mostly from Mumbai, Goa, Alibaug, Pune as well as other parts of Maharashtra who are abreast with the latest trends in the market and are looking for bespoke pieces. In the near future, Sanjana plans on opening other branches in Goa or Pune as also expanding and innovating with new collections.Contact tel: 02141 247701email: [email protected]: www.nostalgialifestyle.com

“I make only that which I would buy”, says Sreeti Mondol, Director and Principal

Designer, Memories of a Butterfly. This is the best answer we have heard from a product designer; it validates her own creations.

Sreeti Mondol is a designer who specialises in creating high-end customised bead curtains and screens in a flexible, modern, dynamic and more eclectic avatar. ‘Memories of a Butterfly’ is a phrase that has stuck with Sreeti since she was a child inspiring vivid, mystifying thoughts and images. Today, this is the essence of her company and therefore its name.

The Memories of a Butterfly design is a simple and malleable concept - the bead curtain. With the right creative treatment, it can make dramatic or subtle, albeit either way, effective statement in interiors and architecture.

Memories Of A ButterflySreeti Mondol, a designer of bead curtains brings to her discerning customers a unique way of styling their interiors. BY ULKA VARTAK

Beaded curtains are a unique lifestyle and fashion statement. What is interesting about bead curtains is that they not only allow for a play with colour, light and texture, but also enable one to create natural connects between spaces. They have

the ability to create privacy without detaching an area from the rest of the house, office, bar, hotel, home or restaurant.

Sreeti believes that bead curtains make adults react in the same ways as we all did to marbles when we were kids - gazing at these wondrous mini universes of glass spheres in the palm of our hands. Bead curtains are playful and moving - through Memories of a Butterfly’s designs Sreeti feels adults are now able to play out the child in them.

It is the uniqueness of the bead curtain that allows Sreeti to create an edge by exploring extensively, in style, material, dimensions and design. The reward is in having happy customers who wouldn’t have imaged the joy a spectacular bead curtain can provide.

Sreeti uses a variety of high-end, high-quality materials in her curtain designs - like pure glass, crystal, Australian shell, bone, treated pvc, stained or sprayed acrylic, acrylic crystal, stone, wood and metal beads to name a few. Some of her designs include ‘Bold Polka’, ‘Gold Basket’, ‘Traditional Aztek’, ‘Descending Amber’, ‘Pomegranate Gold’, ‘Pink Bone Disc’, ‘Pink on Pink’, ‘Leaf ’ and ‘Chandelier Decor’.

Speaking about her creations, Sreeti says, “Most important for me is that the beads are strong and of a high quality, as our curtains are walk through curtains and often used in commercial spaces like spas, restaurants and hotels with high foot

falls. All the designs are hand made and every piece is customised so as to suit the client’s lifestyle design and functional decoration needs.”

Every space needs to be tackled with its own distinct design requirement; which is why they believe in customising every piece when they work with architects, interior designers, hotels, restaurateurs and individual home owners.

When asked about how she gets her creations to the market, Sreeti

says, “We don’t market...we are happy to be known through word of mouth and our projects. The industry has its own system of acknowledging good work and we have been lucky in the appreciation our work receives!”

Sharing details of a recent project, Sreeti recalls, “The Champagne Brown acrylic crystal bead curtain was created for the ‘Champagne Lounge’ at the Grand Cayman Island’s prestigious Car Museum, in affiliation with London based interior

designer and gallery owner David Genty. Here, we used various shapes of acrylic crystal beads, in keeping with the prominent colour theme of champagne and to stay true to the essence of this space. Not only do the bead curtains here lend a sense of richness, warmth, royalty and depth, but they also help segregate the area from the larger museum creating a sense of privacy.”

The designer is currently working on her designs for her latest commercial project, Hotel Novatel in Bangalore. Sreeti designs the bead curtains herself; however, there is a skilled workforce which takes care of orders as they deal with very big numbers. The time frame required to design the end product is anywhere from 3 weeks to 3-4 months depending on the beads used, volume and design of the bead curtain.

The price for these bead curtains range from Rs 7000 to Rs 30,000 for a door size curtain depending on the kind of beads used, volume and design. However, they also work within a budget provided by a client. Contact tel: +91 9845508083email: [email protected]: www.memoriesofabutterfly.com

“Royal Selangor is new in the Indian market as we have not been here for more than 6 months or so. We have begun by setting up two shops and we hope to spread a wider network of retail shops. I feel eventually India would be a big market.” says the Executive Director Chen Tien Yue.

The family run enterprise Royal Selangor is hailed as the world’s foremost name in quality Pewter as they continue to expand their horizons with the recent collaboration with design firm VW+BS.

Skills of Yong Koon and the tin of Malaysia merged together to give the world gleaming products which owe their shape and lustre to a team that includes designers, model makers, mould makers and engineers. The construction industry across the world is witnessing a tremendous boom. The

role of organisations like Supreme Industries in supporting the construction industry has become prominent and critical. Exposure to world-class technology and the advent of global players has led to an infusion of new materials, equipment and processes in the construction industry in India. Duraboard HD100 from the Supreme family is a testimony to this progressive evolution.

Throughout the year building facades, slabs and pipelines expand and contract due to the warming and cooling caused by seasonal variations, or due to other hot or cold sources. If expansion joints are not implemented in structures like bridges, buildings and highways, the intense heat of summers would expand the metal, brick or concrete material in the structure resulting in the development of cracks or even result in total failure.

Duraboard HD100 (formerly SILflex/Capell HD100) is a unique compressible filler board specially designed to be used as an expansion joint filler in concrete bricks, block work and isolation joints in machine foundation. It is readily compressible and is a low load transfer joint filler with excellent recovery properties. DuraboardHD100 can also be used in joints in bridges, decks, water retaining and water excluding structures, etc.

construction requirements of various segments. Ajay Mohta, General Manager, Construction Accessories Division, Supreme Industries Ltd. adds, “This division offers new

generation, better alternative products to conventional materials like rubber, metals, and wood, thus becoming cost effective. The ‘Dura’ range of products are manufactured from virgin raw material and we do not use any CFC / HCFC gases. At every stage of the manufacturing process, a stringent quality check methodology assures the reliability of the products, a case in point is the creation of a low compression set filler board Duraboard HD100 which is especially suited for expansion joints applications. This can now replace the less effective bitumen board based solutions.”

Duraboard HD100 is bitumen free and can be cut in any size with a normal knife. The product is non staining, sustainable and does not deteriorate over a long period of time nor does it distort under normal load from wet concrete; being light weight it is very easy to handle and install. Duraboard HD100 has an excellent recovery of 95 per cent after compression up to 50 per cent. Being polymer based, it is rot proof and

What is common between Aarohi and Art? Well they both start with the

letter ‘A’. Combine the two and you have Art by Aarohi. It does not take a lot to decipher what the brand is all about? It is all about Aarohi Singh’s ethereal art.

Aarohi Singh has been indulging herself in the world of art for the past 20 years. But the brand was incepted not until 2008. Interestingly, it all happened rather accidently, “Actually, I was looking for a website URL and everything that had my name in it was taken. I was in the process of setting up for a show and felt the need for a website that was more informative about me and my work. The URL ArtByAarohi.com was available and I took it up instantly. The next thing I know, the press started referring to my work as - from the label ArtByAarohi. And I became the artist/designer at ArtByAarohi!” says the designer.

This label covers a very wide spectrum and everything creative designed by the artist falls under the ambit of the label, starting with writing the thoughts down to working across varied mediums,

Art From The Heart By AarohiThrough her label Aarohi Singh transforms mundane everyday objects into intelligent masterpieces.

It is not only associated with fine arts, interiors or furniture design but also with apparel and personal accessories. The label also associates with projects that use Aarohi’s art as a basis for fund raising, especially for the causes she believes in.

Creativity and inspiration go hand in hand. So what inspires the designer? “My life! I find that I am perhaps a little more emotional. And I tend to have a deeper reaction to ideas/thoughts or even events that for most people would slide off like water off a ducks back, without having much impact. When you add that to my educational and familial background, there is much

fodder for art.” Aarohi Singh’s educational

qualification lies in a degree in History and professionally she has been an Information Architect for the longest time. And it was solely on the basis of passion she pursued Art. Her first achievement took place when she sold her first piece of art at her first solo exhibition in the year 1994. And this is when the idea of converting her passion into profession struck her.

Speaking about her ‘Kitsch line’ Aarohi says, “The Kitsch line started with one kettle -’The kiss kettle’. And then I was hooked. My mind was full of a multitude of ideas just waiting to be painted. I

could not get them out fast enough. Each piece is an individual, one of a kind piece. And each has a story or a specific thought attached to it. I repeat a theme but never on the same piece.” The idea behind the ‘Nazar Batoo’ kettle was derived from this Indian tradition of applying a ‘Kala Teeka’ to keep the evil eye away.

The artist believes in expressing herself honestly as part of the thought processes of developing her creations. “I don’t work on a piece keeping in mind whether it will sell or appeal to another person. I create for myself. It is only after that process is over, that I turn it over to the viewer to see what they make of it and if they connect in any shape or form to

Khiladi concept table that was created as a memory keepsake for a family leaving town after a two year stint in an apartment complex. The table’s design was based on the rough architectural plan of their apartment complex. Its central core comprised references to chess and snakes and ladders, based on the path of the complex. The flip side of the table involved a complete felt base with four pockets to play a modified game of snooker/pool. And the areas uncovered by the games were covered by over a thousand photographs.

Art By Aarohi products are sold at a price range starting from Rs. 3500. Currently, Aarohi is working on an exhibition of large canvases, roughly 4x5 to 4x7 feet comprising of large faces.

me or my thought process”, states Aarohi. The design finds space on her canvas, kettle or furniture as soon as it pops up in the mind. And probably this is the reason why there is no fixed amount of time that goes into finishing the work. A Khiladi table or cupboard may take upto a week whereas a kettle may take two days of non-stop work while a canvas can go on for a month.

The products are marketed via her website and Facebook page. She also holds exhibitions of her work every year.

Some of her interesting projects include a Time Stamp Chair which involved painting two very old chairs. It was meant as the kid’s study table chair. Another was a

Interview

Unlike a static entity, the design world is very dynamic always abuzz

with a plethora of events, yet

IDF 2013 Mumbai hosted the 2013 edition of the India Design Forum where creativity and design was debated, showcased and appreciated.

Ton VenhoevenA graduate from the Technical University of Delft, Ton Venhoeven is the Principal Architect of VenhoevenCS, an ambitious and innovative design studio based in Netherlands.

Why do you think the multicultural aspect of Indian society is a positive sign for the design industry?

In my opinion when you talk about a multicultural society I am not talking about a fixed identity like Muslims or Shias or Hindus. I am talking about uniqueness in certain spaces. I have a strong belief in micro cultures and the changing character of micro cultures. What happens is, in certain areas there is suddenly a new railway station and you find people moving in from different parts of the country. Or maybe there is an airport or tourism development and suddenly you see there is an exchange of different people. You witness these very micro cultures; there is an ongoing evolution but it doesn’t result in one unique Indian culture but a collection of thousands of millions of unique cultures, a collection of thought processes.

How do you think design can help in a scenario where there is an influx of people to Indian cities leading to the failure of infrastructure?

I think the power of design lies in its ability of bringing people together. It can create really constructive places that people would like to visit in order to experience a better way of life by using symbolic and

atmospherical techniques which make the place soothing for such people. In a city like Mumbai you have areas which house the well-to-do of the city and then you have a satellite city like Navi Mumbai which is preferred mostly by the middle classes and then there are areas dotted with immigrants. Such inequality can’t be a solution to the crisis.

Considering India is still an agrarian nation what do you think should be the concept of a rural Indian habitat?

I am not really much familiar with all the aspects of rural India but I don’t think it is appropriate to develop the countryside to curb the migration towards urban areas. Larger part of Indians in the future will be found in the metropolitan cities and very little can be done about it.

So, we will see development of cultures in the metropolitan areas and we must move towards metropolitan agriculture.

Indian design is considered by some to be too loud; do you believe minimalism can save the day?

It is an ongoing debate; the whole minimalistic idea was based on the industrial revolution, but today you have so many different creative options to choose from and I feel all designers will look for ways to use these methods, besides in my opinion there is no controversy between minimalism and symbolism because minimalism is also symbolic it can be used to express certain themes.

another addition to this colourful genre is the India Design Forum (IDF). Conceived in the year 2012 by Rajashree Pathy and her daughter Aishwarya Pathy, founders of Coimbatore Centre for Contemporary Art (COCCA), the event set stage for a dialogue on the core issues impacting our society and how good design can help find an effective solution.

The event brought together top architects, interior designers and product designers during the two day conference which concluded on March 16th, 2013 at the NCPA in Mumbai.

In an exclusive interview to The Inside Track, two designers Ton Venhoeven and Renny Ramakers who graced IDF 2013 share their thoughts.

Do you think design in India is disorganised?

Well as far as I can understand there are Indian designers who do think that way; somebody once asked me what is it that someone like me can do about it? Well to be frank, an outsider can’t do much as he may not understand the people of the country.

Do you look forward to collaborate with Indian designers under the Droog ambit?

We have been working with a few Indian designers on certain projects; we find it easier to work with people who truly espouse the Droog philosophy, if we find additional Indian designers in the same league we would definitely look forward to the collaboration.

In an age of globalisation how deep is cultural uniqueness ingrained in design?

Culture in itself is a self-sustaining exercise since it provides an economic leeway to people who are a part of it. Every culture is unique just like design; people make the culture it’s not a standalone entity it enables connectivity among the people. So is the case with design. It certainly

is not aloof of the purpose it serves which also means bringing people together for constructive purposes, l ike for example self-created economic activity. In places like New York and Northham, especially the immigrants bound together by their unique culture created jobs. The thing about self employment is that you are not relying on the government to create jobs for you but you do it yourself.

Certain designers are of the view that design work within fixed coordinates. What is your opinion?

Well, you already know the answer. When it comes to me I follow my intuition. In 20 years time, I have done this. I learnt a lot, and what I did by intuition was far better than what I could have done on the basis of existing knowledge ingrained through books. There have been instances when the established design community and I have openly disagreed on certain parameters. Design should be kept simple when many times it gets confined in set principles it is difficult to decipher it. I would say intuition and instinct are the keywords for good design.

So I feel everyone must follow their own intuition instead of looking elsewhere. You go to school and you have all those textbooks to read but at the end of the day it’s you who has to do it. Hence I believe you have your own individual coordinates. Design is not necessarily an intelligent or complicated profession”Contact: tel: +91 98733 [email protected]: www.indiadesignforum.com

Only a designer like Philippe Starck can call apartments, houses and offices his own

personal museums. After all, this is where his salad bowls, chairs, lemon squeezers and bathroom products are to be found. A gifted product designer, he made an international name for himself in the 1980s. Even then he

believed that modern forms do not have to be re-invented. Instead, he based his design on the re-discovery of ancient forms.

For Duravit, he translated archetypal objects into ceramics, and the resulting product range revolutionised the entire bathroom world. To date, he has developed three design lines for Duravit that suit every lifestyle and budget.

Searching for the origin of things when working on the Starck 1 series at the beginning of the 1990s, the designer engaged intensively with our basic human needs, namely freshness, cleanliness and hygiene. In 1994, he unveiled the result of his work, namely the reduced, simple forms of the washbasin, toilet and bidet, which were inspired by the archaic, primitive forms of the washbowl, bucket and tub. The design of the famous Starck barrel adopts the basic form of the bucket that tapers outward towards the

top and has become a modern design classic in the bathroom.

The element water was the inspiration behind Philippe Starck’s second range for Duravit. In 1998, he designed Starck 2, a range of ceramics that is a continuation, further development and also an addition to its famous predecessor, Starck 1. The series is influenced less by original forms and, instead, echoes the movement of water. The fluid forms of the ceramics imitate water as it runs its course. Despite their differences, the resulting organic forms all carry Philippe Starck’s distinctive signature.

In 2002, the designer started a second revolution with his third complete bathroom range for Duravit,

Since their launch, the French designer’s Starck 1 products have embarked upon a remarkable journey around the world. Starck’s design appeals to many people and, in its combination of aesthetics and practicality, represents a milestone in bathroom history. Even after 20 years, his creations still stand for sustainable product design. At the recently concluded ISH fair in Frankfurt, Duravit yet again unveiled an extension to the Philippe Starck product range.
