Our superstaff

Carlette Nel’s recent appointment as a member of our footwear planning team is a radical change of career. She com-pleted her studies at the University of Stellenbosch at the end of 2010, where she obtained her degree in BComm (Management Accounting). After nearly two years at an auditing firm, a passion for sport redirected her to Moresport where she commenced duties at the beginning of 18 March 2013.

Cillie Wentzel has progressed from casual student work to appointment as a planner in equipment buying. His heart-warming story goes back to 2010, when he started as a casual at our Tyger Valley store, working during his free time while a student at Stellenbosch University. Three years on the sales floor whetted his appetite for sports retail and, after he completed his BComm (Management Accounting), he joined the Head Office team. He looks forward to planning our ranges in rugby, soccer, netball, basketball, squash and tennis.

Pierre du Plessis trail runner to trainee planner in outdoor equipment. Pierre finished his studies at Stellenbosch University at the end of last year, where he too was awarded a BComm (Management Accounting) degree. His enthusiasm for trail running and spear fishing will serve him well in the outdoor department. He started with us on 18 March and is currently training at our Outdoor Warehouse store in Bellville. Welcome to the team, Pierre.

Megan Woodwho worked as an intern in the office of the Premier of the Western Cape - Helen Zille when her internship finished last year. She enjoys a range of outdoor activities including hiking and camping. This healthy outdoor approach is sure to be an asset in her duties of distributing hockey, cycling, cricket and baseball equipment for Sportsmans Warehouse.

Ezette van Sittert Engaged in ThailandOur finance executive, Ezette van Sittert, recently became engaged to Stefan Huisamen while in vacation in Thailand. Against the appropriately romantic backdrop of stunning Koh Samui island, Stefan went down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage. Ezette is due to wed her knight in shining armour in August and the wedding will take place in an equally romantic setting, a castle in George. Congratulations to the happy couple.

Hannes Smit Caught on The Bank Angler coverOur very own Hannes Smit, operations manager of the Outdoor Warehouse chain, recently graced the cover of the Bank Angler’s March edition. Hannes – who had posed for his friend’s camera with his proud catch, a largemouth yellowfish weighing 9 kg – was surprised to find himself on the cover of the magazine. The friend had thought this great achievement deserved the limelight and turned paparazzi without Hannes’s knowledge. Congrats Hannes – that looks likea great catch.

W. Cape staff go underwater in search of knowledgeAqualung (Breathing Air Systems) recently ran an underwater training session at the Long Street Baths in the centre of Cape Town. The course focused on the various features and technologies that are found in the masks, snorkels and fins of the Aqualung range. Both theory and practicals were involved and it wasn’t just the sales staff from across Cape Town who got wet in the course of duty. Raymond Gordon, our outdoor and underwater buyer, and trainee planner, Ane Gelderblom, also took the plunge.

makhulu Swim, midrandOn 17 February our bright and beautiful arches were the focus of attention at this event, held annually at Leisure Lakes, just outside Midrand in Gauteng. The two open-water swims of 1000 m and 500 m were enjoyed by over 704 swimmers, both serious and leisure, so our exposure was valuable. Atterbury staff, under the leadership of the famous Frikkie Bouwer, put on this fantastic show.

Massive congratulations are due to all the fired-up staff who put their help where their heart is. Our presence was incredibly welcome at events from Centurion to Cape Town. Thanks guys. You are true ambassadors.

deloitte pretoria marathonOn the baking hot Saturday of 23 February, just over 9000 brave runners tackled the full, half marathon and 10 km routes.

The event was organized, efficiently as always, by Phobians Club and we operated a watering point at Pretoria Boys’ High School.

As temperatures rose, some of the full marathon competitors bailed out after the 37 km mark and 1870 of them crossed the finishing line.

Again, Herman’s intrepid team from Atterbury, together with Frikkie Bouwer, pulled off this wonderful event.

Century City 10 km Express, Cape townThe 5th annual Century City 10 km Express race that forms part of the precinct’s sports festival took place on 2 March with ±1600 runners competing.

The winner was Nkosinathi Madyo of Nedbank in a time of 30:05. Three-times Comrades winner, Vladimir Kotov, was the first Master over 50 runner home in a time of 33:47.

Faiez and his team from Canal Walk did a great job of manning a watering point on Century City Boulevard.

Well done, guys.

turbovite Jump City Event, Johannesburg1250 people completed this urban challenge on Sunday 10 March. This new trend in inner-city road running involves a course of man-made obstacles specially created for the event.

It’s new, it’s definitely different, and we were there to support participants.

Hylton and his team from Park Meadows manned the well-branded watering point, with help from the Frikkie Bouwer.

Cape Argus pick n pay Cycle tourIt’s one of the biggest events on the Cape Town calendar and world-renowned in cycling circles. Its route is described as “the most beautiful 109 km”.

It’s known as ‘The Argus’ for short, and this year it took place on Sunday 10 March with a field of over 35 000 brave entrants including Virgin Group founder, Richard Branson, and W. Cape Premier Helen Zille.

All Cape Town stores and Head Office staff assisted cyclists at our Noordhoek watering point, whether it was with a cup of water, repairing their bikes or just a friendly smile and a cheer of encouragement as they passed by. What a day – and what a great bunch of staff.

Krugersdorp High School Netball FestivalThis year the prestigious tournament fell on the weekend of 2 – 3 March, with the school hosting 110 netball teams from all over the country, in the age groups U10 – U18.

Our branding made a great impression, as the pictures prove.

We sponsored a host of sporting equipment to make the tournament run more efficiently and SWH gift vouchers for the winning teams.

Thanks to Sikhumbuzo (branch manager) and his team from Westgate.

Boland mini Series 1 tennis tournamentThis two-day tournament, hosted by Boland Tennis Club in Somerset West, took place on 9 and 10 March, with 160 tennis players from across the province competing.

We branded the event to the best of our ability, but because the event was on the same weekend as the Argus Cycle Tour, our resources and branding materials were limited. Despite those restrictions, Natalie and her team at Somerset West did a great job with what they could lay their hands on.

Good work, SSW.
