COVERSTORY 1

Jaquar Launches its Global agenda

our key markets right now are the Middle East, with a focus on Saudi Arabia and UAE, Asia with a focus on Singapore and Thailand, and Europe.

What is the time frame arrived at to set up a well integrated dealer network?

That depends of course on the country. We follow a 5 years business plan that we break down in country road maps. Important apart from finding and appointing distributors in new countries is training them on the philosophy and product features of our brand. We have clear guidelines on how we see a partnership and it is mandatory for our dealers to have their staff trained regularly. We bring them to our premises in Gurgaon or we offer various training modules within the countries to keep our partners updated and qualified in order to promote our brand.

In times to come how does Jaquar plan to promote itself as a global brand?

The high invests that we put into building a “Global Bathing

Solution Brand” when it comes to the dealer/showroom network are only beneficial when we manage to excite the end user.

End users differ in culture and perception from region to region and these habits have to be addressed when building a global brand. We are aggressively promoting the brand through various vehicles on a global level, by keeping the brand image consistent, but at the same time we address certain regions a bit different when it comes to how we talk about our brand e.g. in terms of images, wording, activities.

What was the response to the Jaquar event which recently concluded in Dubai?

The feedback was overwhelming and we are really pleased by it. At the same time we have raised the expectation level of our partners for future activities very high. This is the challenge that we wanted to face and we are preparing numereous activities to build strong awareness for our brand. We at Jaquar are not just doing products. We evoke emotions that create the desire for having a luxurious bathing experience at home. Contact: web: www.jaquar.com

Designed by prize-winning artist Anish Kapoor and structural designer Cecil

Balmond, the ArcelorMittal Orbit is a 115-metre-high (377 ft) observation tower located in the southern area of the Olympic Park, between Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre.

Commissioned by the Greater London Authority, the tower was unveiled recently in May 2012. Orbit cost £22.7 million, of which ArcelorMittal funded as much as 19.6 million while the remaining £3.1 million was funded by the London Development Agency.

The inception of building Britain’s largest piece of public art took place in October 2008 when London Mayor Boris Johnson and Tessa Jowell decided that the site in Stratford, London, that was to become the Olympic Park for the 2012 Olympics needed “something extra” to distinguish the East London skyline.

Anish Kapoor’s Orbit Unveiled Britain’s largest piece of public art, The ArcelorMittal Orbit, designed by Anish Kapoor and structural designer Cecil Balmond was unveiled recently . BY Vikas Bhadra

A design competition was held in 2009 for designs of an “Olympic tower” along the lines of Trajan’s Column, but the idea took a backseat once the entries were received.

Kapoor’s and Balmond’s Orbit was announced as the winner on 31 March 2010 and work started in November 2010. Taller than the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben, twice as high as Nelson’s column in London’s Trafalgar Square, the Orbit is a hybrid, a network of art and

structure. Around 560 meters of red tubular steel form the structure and 250 colored spotlights illuminate it at night; the tower has two observation floors, a 455-step spiral staircase, lift and restaurant.

Sixty percent of the 2,000 tonnes of steel used in the sculpture was drawn from recycled sources, underlining steel’s status as the world’s most recyclable material.

The ArcelorMittal Orbit will draw visitors to the newly regenerated

swathes of east London. Visitors will enter a central elevator to ascend the steel tower, arriving at an observation deck with a panoramic view of the city. To exit, they will be encouraged to climb down the staircase that spirals around the tower’s exterior.

Designer Anish Kapoor says that a number of possibilities had crossed his mind when it came to the design aspect of the tower, together with Cecil the duo arrived at the final draft. He adds that the tower

is awkward yet beautiful with its elbows sticking out, it refuses any singular capture, and it refuses to be an emblem. It is unsettling which perhaps, is one aspect of its beauty.

Initially when Orbit was unveiled it drew sharp criticisms, many dubbed it as a symbol of catharsis which resonated the looks of an Eiffel Tower destroyed by war, however, designer Anish Kapoor has

sidelined the criticisms by citing that he has researched initial reactions to the Eiffel Tower, and recalls the horror of observers such as author Victor Hugo.

The Orbit will open to the public in late July, allowing up to 5,000 visitors a day.Contact: www.anishkapoor.comwww.arcelormittalorbit.com/

The special feature developed for this fitting is that individual streams of water are dispersed providing a gentle and elegant experience whilst washing hands. In addition to the Deque sculpture, four individual applications were designed for Deque. They each show a combination of outlets and a landscape element. CAC as it is fondly known was started in 1962 by an architect called Vina Mody

along with a couple of furniture makers. They got together with people from different fields to promote Indian arts and crafts because they strongly believed that Indians inherently had a lot of

The founders felt that there was plenty of local cultural art (which was world class) which needed to be showcased appropriately. So, they went on to travel all across India in search of hidden gems. Each item in the store is hand-chosen by its owners Vina and Feroza Mody.

Over the decades, CAC has encouraged artisans and craftsmen from all corners of India to cultivate and develop their skills. Everything you see in the shop is Indian. The essence of the store lies in the original art of the Indian artisans. In addition to this, CAC also gives them the designs for production. Vina Mody, the promoter of CAC, is an American lady settled in India since 1950, and has been working with local artisans ever since, through her store. Her

CAC proudly displays its love for Mumbai by having pictures of old Mumbai on items like coasters, cushions, etc.

The store is an eclectic mix of traditional arts and crafts which are interesting, funky and creative.

CAC shop displays large Kashmiri wall hangings (12ft x 3ft) which are made of wool and cotton; these are

hand stitched and are exclusively available in the Mumbai outlet; a patchwork wall hanging from Orissa, also present in the store depicts the entire Ramayana. The two tiered, three tiered and foldable trolleys and rocking chairs are exclusive CAC products which have proved to be best sellers over time.

As part of their initiative to re-imagine Indian crafts, CAC has dedicated a space in their shop to occasionally showcase traditional artists like kalamkaari workers, weavers, painters, etc., as a part of workshops and exhibitions encouraging the youth to appreciate and take notice of Indian art in its

various forms. They plan to invite young designers to come and display their work at the store as well. The management believes that young designers have great ideas but they lack the “how-to” factor, which CAC can help fulfill.

Vina Mody, the founder and Director of CAC says, “I am so excited about the new shop. The new CAC promises to bring a new range of products, but still sticks to its tradition of selling and encouraging only Indian craft. We have sourced

a lot of products from all over India to be included in this range, which is exclusive to only the CAC’s of Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.”

Sustainability and craftsmanship were some of the unique features of the new designs. The use of recycled and reclaimed wood was a big theme at EuroCucina this year, in addition to the use of new composite stone materials and more eco-friendly cement surfaces.

The real proof of superior craftsmanship is in the detailing of the kitchen. Mitred edges and corners meet in perfect points,

The Euro Cucina event is held in Milan every two years as part of the iSaloni. It is

considered to be ‘the’ global event where kitchen manufacturers exhibit innovative prototypical designs to push the envelope in this field.

A current theme in kitchen design has been the transformation of the kitchen space into a social one, and this was clearly reflected in the kitchen design trends showcased at EuroCucina 2012.

Electrolux Wants To Transform Your KitchenElectrolux unveils its latest designs to make the kitchen the new social and digital hub of your home. BY ULKA MANJREKAR

Complementing the new designs were kitchen devices incorporating connectivity to enhance functionality through digital technology while being more environment friendly.

Pernilla Johansson, the Design Director of Electrolux Major Appliances for Asia Pacific leads an international team of designers from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India and China and has been involved in the launch of the Electrolux Design and Innovation Centre in Singapore which drives design innovation in the region.

In an exclusive interview, Ms. Pernilla Johansson shared with us her insights on Electrolux’s new designs and transformation:

Can you share some insights of the unique features of Electrolux

while chamfers on the undersides of benches give the illusion of impossibly thin bench-tops. The most premium kitchens continue to build on the trend of motorised doors and drawers, with solutions for several types of cabinets and cupboards. These include extremely large sliding doors which can conceal an entire work area.

How does Electrolux help in transforming the kitchen into a social place?

The integration of kitchens with living spaces to further facilitate social interaction as well as deal with decreasing living spaces is a continuing trend.

With Electrolux, spaces can be transformed depending on how they are used, and functional components can be hidden when they are not required. As kitchens increasingly become a social hub in the home, with family members interacting and helping out, many modern kitchens are seeing designs which create multiple work centres. Such designs incorporate separate work areas or countertops for different tasks in cooking.

In working out the floor plan, the size of your kitchen appliances, especially large ones like fridges, stoves and ovens is taken into account primarily.

Can you elaborate on how design and functionality aspects are balanced in your products?

Style is increasingly becoming an important consideration in kitchen design. The current trend favours sleek, elegant kitchens with bold colours creating striking contrasts.

In such kitchens, rather than hide appliances, the kitchen appliance range itself, like the Electrolux Ebony

Kitchen Range leads the trend in creating a bold design statement for the home. All appliances are planned to create a stylishly consistent look throughout the kitchen.

Aside from black, the sleek, clean lines of a stainless steel kitchen tend to convey a sophisticated professionalism, which can be seen in styles like the Electrolux E:line collection. If you still prefer to hide your appliances or save space with built-in ones, look for coordinated cabinet fronts from the brand that can help each appliance blend easily into the kitchen’s overall look.

Could you elaborate a little about the Electrolux fully hidden integrated ovens?

The Electrolux large cavity built-in oven fits in the standard 60cm

dimension niche. The latest models feature the largest oven capacity with an Ultra Fan Plus that heats the oven even faster, and a unique detachable Cool Plus door that enhances safety for everyone in the family. This new range has ovens where each one has a gross volume of 75L, with the option to cook up to three levels of racks simultaneously. Its space-efficient design provides up to 20% more room for food on each shelf.

Do you see India as a potential market for your products?

Yes, India is definitely a potential market for our products and we intend to launch these in India by as soon as next year. Contact: tel: 09818727936email : [email protected] web: www.electrolux.in

Every city has a tale to tell; and often the tale is embellished in the subjects and objects of the

passing on to the other world for good, and this is what forms the basis of Sudarshan Shetty’s latest public art project - The Flying Bus.

The Flying Bus is stationery and the front wheels of the bus are raised above the ground as though it’s about to take off. Welded to each side of the bus just behind the driver’s cabin, are wings made of stainless steel scales that catch the changing light and gives the illusion of flight.

Commissioned by art collector and real estate developer Manish Maker the Flying Bus cost around

Rs 1 crore, the interiors of the bus can be used for art shows and events, making an unforgettable setting.

Before the bus was installed, the ground platform at Maker Maxity where it stands had to be reinforced so it could withstand the sculpture’s 9,000 kilos. The 40-ft-long bus was made to order in Belgaum and its 34-ft-long steel wings were fabricated in Baroda.

The Flying Bus is open to the public from noon to 7pm and the best part is that no ticket is required!

This makes it necessary for all to design with “green” or ecologically responsive design objectives in mind. Indeed, these are the prime objectives for the design community of today. This proves that all those concerned with building design can, with the application of ecological principles, make a significant contribution towards a sustainable future through the creation of thorough ‘green architecture’ that is evolved from comprehensive methods, progressing into ecological designs for the skyscrapers of the present.

Vikas Pawar is an Indian architect, working to develop a new language of architecture that would “sustain”

and “survive” the impacts of climate change, taking eco-responsibility one step ahead.

His design of the Eco-Skyscraper is one such example of a robust architecture that not only sustains but survives climate change. This project was awarded at the Degree and Profession Virtual Expo, and was exhibited at the Florence World Festival. The project ranked 4th among the 1426 projects, that were brought in from around the world.

To survive we need food, water and shelter. For food, this tower has continuous vertical spiral farms enveloping the structure. Using

Green Speak

Green building refers to a structure that is built using processes that are

environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle - right from inception to demolition. This method of building uses a minimum amount of water, maximises energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, reduces waste and provides healthy spaces for its occupants, as compared to a conventional building.

A Vertical Green City - The Eco Skyscraper Vikas Pawar takes us through his concept of going green by elucidating his design for an Eco-Skyscraper.

hydroponics these produce food with a minimum of land and water requirement. Some parts of the building which get direct sunlight will grow summer crops and the parts of the farm which get diffused sunlight will grow winter crops.

The two spiral towers help in directing the wind which comes from the north-west direction at the site. The wind is directed towards the center of the towers where wind mills are installed to harness maximum amounts of wind and produce energy for the towers.

Wate r i s g ene ra t ed f rom atmospheric humidity, taking advantage of the spiral since the wind here has a maximum surface area of contact. Wind loses all its humidity on the façade with the use of a special technique. The water thus obtained is then used for drinking purposes

Various passive and direct energy methods are used to achieve a zero carbon footprint for the building. It recycles all its waste and use the organic waste as manure for the farming processes resulting in net zero waste.

Producing enough food from farming and drinking water from humidity for 1500 people, the building achieves an exceptional level of environmental sustainability. This structure makes mixed use of various functions to achieve self-sufficiency

Thus by innovative planning, the designer has managed to take into account environmental, economical and social sustainability leading to a successful and consummate green design.Contact: mob: 9015157517email : [email protected]
