with a decor inspired by historical 19th century Mettlach tiles. The original patterns and designs have been updated and adapted to present-day tastes and colours.

The result is a concept with 27 porcelain stoneware décor tiles in the classic 20 x 20 cm format, which can be combined into distinctive patterns or laid as a random patchwork. It’s divided into three décor series in three tones around the basic tile colours: restrained and warm to match creme, beige and brown tiles, contrasting and cool in light grey, medium grey, dark grey and indigo, and colourful in a combination of all colours including cotto.

LupinThe 3rd By Del ConcaDedicated to the most demanding

customers who are attentive to modern trends, the exclusive collection of ceramic tiles is inspired by the legendary Japanese manga series - Lupin The 3rd, the gentleman thief. Cool, with decisive lines and colours, and expressed in three different decors, the collection includes and portrays the entire gang: in addition to the legendary gentleman thief, other protagonists are Fujiko, trusted sidekicks Goemon with his katana and expert gunslinger Jigen, and the ever-present and luckless inspector Zenigata. The inclusion of comic art and vintage inspiration in ceramic tiles brings on a whole new dimension to interior design.

Groove Collection By DuneGroove is an exclusive design by Michael Golden for Dune created by mixing colours of molten glass, forming unique and perfect arrangements that create a unique as well as balanced visual effect in the tiles. These half curved, wavy chips bring out the beauty of the multi-coloured mixed glass effect. It is an authentic, motif-free, modern design that suggests an artisan’s production process. Reggae, Salsa and Blues are the result of more than 20 tests of colour combinations where each individual chip is unique, adding to the overall richness of Groove’s designs.

Shade By Ceramica VogueThe new ceramic collection of Shade tiles offers indoor and outdoor design solutions for public and private areas. The Shade collection is made of 14 colour ‘shades’, and is the result of Ceramica Vogue’s in-house laboratory research aimed to offer new colour shades in line with current colour and design needs.

Made of enamelled and frost-proof porcelain stone, suited for both floors and coverings, they come in the rectified 50 x 50 cm size. The 14 base colours are accompanied by Shade Cut, four etched formats made in all colours that enhance surfaces with pleasing decorative geometries. Moreover, five modular and combinable accessory families complete the collection that enriches the product range with different materials and textures.

VitraVitra presented a new collection of porcelain tiles to reflect the full spectrum of nature under daylight. The textures of basic building elements such as metal, cement and wood are represented by three categories splitting the day and the concept: Awakening, Life and Serenity. The Ice & Smoke collection indicates the Awakening; the discreet and modern design of glossy cement available in warm grey tones. A rich mix in wood, cement and natural stone with matching shade palates and natural textures and grains, Fango Mix - representing Life - is good for spaces with homey and modern styles. While Hot Chocolate, a porcelain collection with a high gloss surface finish, is a romantic and rich interpretation to

the natural wood look falls under the Serenity category along with Terra Nova and Experi-Metal.

belief that ceramics are not just a subject to paint and decorate, but a raw canvas to be turned into a narrative. The fluid brushstrokes, abstract patterns and the co-ordinating shapes of Azzura Art create a harmonious visual unity, thus turning everyday objects into works of art that become a part of the user’s lifestyle.

Ceramica Flaminia for BonolaBonola is an open ended project that balances flowing lines of organic inspiration, avant garde manufacturing systems and Italian wisdom. The collection amplifies in the course of time, in terms of elements and finishes. The achievement of the award is largely due to the success of Bonola

designed by Jasper Morrison for Flaminia. The project was started as a collection of washbasins in the pedestial and counter top versions and in recent times has included a new oval-shaped model, also for counter top assembly, along with a wall-mounted toilet and bidet.

Tagina Ceramiche D’Arte for EsagonaThe 3D hexagonal tiles from Tagina Atelier are manufactured using a unique process and a strong focus is maintained on ceramic material and a high level of engineering is involved. The product is customised to solve problems and this aspect is the key element of the design. The

Cersaie Spl.

Cersaie has witnessed a commendable journey of more than 20 years.

However, for the first time in 2009, the organisers introduced a cultural event of architecture and design named ‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking.’ The interesting name states all the actions performed by a human being in the duration of his lifetime on earth.

In its short history of about five years, ‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking’ has spectated participation from many noted speakers especially from the world of building design; and this includes a number of Pritzker award winners, Italian and other international designers, academicians, professionals and other intellectuals. Several design, technical and broad cultural concepts have been discussed ranging from pure architecture to design and ceramics.

‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking’ has elevated Cersaie to more than an annual international event where students and design professionals can acquire the latest information on ceramic tiles. It has now become an open platform to discuss and resolve problems of contemporary design and to interact and gain inspiration from accomplished designers and architects from all over the world.

The event in 2014 started with a discussion on the theme of architecture in musical spaces in the presence of Spanish acoustics expert Higini Arau, bassist Saturnino Celani and architect Lorenzo Palmari. The renowned Catalan architect Carme Pinós, honorary member of the American Institute of Architects, gave an insight into her original and unusual career.

Toyo Ito, keynote lecturer at Building, Dwelling, Thinking

The four day event included a talk on the future of ceramics by Ar. Stefano Mirto, Marco Lampugnani, Egidio Lomi, Anna Bernagozzi, Martin Azua and Claudio Musso. Eminent architects like Javier Corvalaan and Francesco Dal Co gave the visitors an insight into their world of architecture.

A discussion was conducted between Fulvio Irace, Simona Malvezzi, Nadir

Bonaccorso and Sergio Nava on Italian architects who are practising abroad. Italian architects from different parts of the world too joined this discussion virtually through Skype. A lecture titled ‘Lesson in Reverse’ was addressed by architects Riccardo Blumer and Fulvio Irace.

The ADI Ceramic Design Awards, which were an important event in

the ‘Building, Dwelling, Thinking’ agenda acknowledged the winners of the competition that was intended at showcasing Italian ceramic industry’s most innovative products.

The highlight was the keynote lecture by Toyo Ito, which was conducted on 25th September at the Palazzo dei Congressi. The Japanese a rch i t ec t was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2013 for his exceptional work. Toyo Ito discussed his approach to cons t ruc t ion and de s ign before an audience of more than 1,700 keen viewers.

He spoke about the measures that architecture needs to adopt in the present and the future, considering that today we live in a world which we have destroyed with use of artificial materials such as concrete and aluminium. Natural ventilation, minimal usage of electrical energy and use of groundwater, sunlight and solar panels were the key points he touched upon.Contact web: www.cersaie.it

An urban extension has been created to augment Jinzhou, a city with around three

million inhabitants located less than 500 kilometres North-East of Beijing. This extension has been further enhanced by a large public park of 176 hectares in an area reclaimed from the sea. During the first phase, the park will host the Jinzhou World Landscape Art Exposition and once the expo is closed, the area will become a central park.

The Mosaic Park and the Ceramic Museum is designed by Casanova + Hernandez architects

that the Jinzhou region was once the location for production of porcelain and ceramic. The irregular geometry of the park is spatially formed into a three-dimensional topography, where architecture finds landscape and blends into an incessant surface formed by 884 irregular planes.

The building of the Ceramic Museum is observed to be an extension of the unconventional geometry of the park and the same ceramic tiles are used to make the pavement of the park. The building façade which has glazed openings also follows irregular patterns. The geometry is accessorised by combining flowers of four different species and colours with mosaics created with broken pieces of

20 international designers have designed 20 projects within a comparable circular perimeter in different locations to give character to the area. The design of the expo is based on the irony that globalisation, although notorious for ruining the local cultural identity, may also add to the uniqueness of the place.

Within this development The Mosaic Park project aims to create a link between citizens and the place to give a wider meaning to the site. The use of broken local ceramic pieces of different colours for the materialisation of the pavement and benches of the park and also the façade represents the mosaic tradition that was spread in Europe by the Roman Empire and that has evolved till the present day bringing technical solutions.

T h e C a t a l a n m o d e r n i s t architects have used the trecandis technique and the geometry of the park has been designed taking inspiration from the crackled glaze of the Chinese porcelain developed from the 10th century during the Song Dynasty in the Ru Ware and Ge Ware ceramic pieces.

The Mosaic park and the Ceramic Museum designed by Casanova + Hernandez architects act as a reminder

local Chinese pottery. Flowers and ceramic together symbolise nature and local crafts creating a picturesque ambience.

The colourful mosaic formed by vegetal and ceramic surfaces provide aesthetic and geometric unity to the project avoiding the usual divide between hardscape and softscape. Landscape and architecture represented embodied by the Mosaic Park and Ceramic Museum fuse into a single work at the same time.

The iconic nature of the project works as an attraction to the visitors to enjoy an experience that stimulates the senses. The many dimensions of the park have been designed using the concept of ergonomics to provide comfortable spaces to walk, sit or play. The park has also been well furnished with benches to create informal seating areas for social interactions.Contact web: www.casanova-hernandez.com

Interview

Intuition takes an idea and weaves it around the life of the user. No detail too small. No feature

ignored. Queo products are rooted in the fundamental element of intuition and signify this notion in every aspect of its design and features.

Queo is a luxury sanitary ware brand of Barwood UK, imported and marketed exclusively in India by HSIL Limited. The company has been constantly innovating and offering a slew of new products giving its customers a variety of choices and delightful solutions.

The Queo brand is symbolic with design and has a bouquet of products in the sanitary ware and bath fitting arena which are distinctive in their styling and aesthetics.

In an exclusive interview with The Inside Track, Mr. V. Krishnamurthy, Vice-President, HSIL Limited gave us some insights on Queo and shared its future plans.

Queo For DesignQueo denotes elegance and reflects the design expectations of affluent Indians aspiring to own premier brands suited for their homes. BY ULKA MANJREKAR

Mr. V. Krishnamurthy, Vice-President, HSIL Limited

What is the USP of Queo?

Queo is known for its intuitive design and each and every product is designed keeping in mind the consumer. Our understanding of design is different from some of the rest.

What are some of the innovations introduced by Queo?

Each and every product by Queo is very innovative. For example, i f I look at F-Mosaic - the combination of ceramic with metal is groundbreaking. If you look at the washbasin with built-in faucets, WCs with concealed elements or be it showers with double cascades or the massage jets; each and every product is very innovative.

How does Queo compare in price and quality with other competing brands?

Queo is basically from the UK. Barwood, a leading British purveyor of bespoke bathrooms, has translated this belief into Queo. Forms of

ceramic and metal combine to complement the lifestyle of the privileged. The products are 100% manufactured in Europe. In terms of quality benchmarking, the products are much higher. We are more into the luxury and premium segment of the market.

What have been some of your biggest challenges in the Indian market?

The market is challenging and competitive, but we are one of the fastest growing brands in India. We have more stores coming up and more dealers and distributors coming in. Also the market in India is huge and this market is a growing market. So there is a huge scope to grow as well.

What are your plans in the short term?

Currently we have 70 stores in metros and mini-metro cities. By the year end we plan to have around 100 stores and by the next year we plan to have around 200 stores of Queo in India.

Can you share some details about your presence in the project segment?

Queo is primarily positioned more into the high-end project segment. We are involved in some of the best projects in India. For example, the Cochin International Airport, Audi Showrooms and many other premium projects have been done by Queo.Contactweb: www.queobathrooms.co.uk

products are necessary in the construction of a building to reduce the heat transferred by conduction, convection and radiation to varying degrees. The primary function of reflective insulation is to reduce radiant heat transfer across open spaces, which is a significant contributor to heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter.

There are many types of materials that reduce heat gain and heat loss. Some materials provide greater resistance than others, depending on the mode of heat transfer: convection, conduction

or radiation. Supreme provides three kinds of insulation material which are INSUshield-closed cell, FR crosslinked polyethylene foam, cellular walls of plastics; fibre glass wool uses glass fibers to reduce convection thereby decreasing the transfer of heat. These materials also reduce heat transfer by conduction due to the presence of trapped air.

Supreme’s Thermal Insulation Division offers solutions in the areas of ducting insulation in hospitals,

shopping malls, airports, PEBs, IT/ BPO etc. They also provide ideal pipe insulation materials for split AC tubings, chiller piping, drain pipes and chilled water lines.

Apart from these, floor insulation products for server rooms, data centres, medical and diagnostic centres and control rooms for petrochemical plants are also available. Underdeck and overdeck insulation solutions for residential and commercial bui ld ings a re a l so prov ided

of polyethylene air bubble film (ABF) laminated with aluminum foil on one or both sides. The bright surface of the aluminum foil reflects 96 to 99 per cent infra-red radiation received by the surface of a heated slate roof. It protects the building from undesirable heat gain. The thin reflective foil having low emissivity and high reflectivity when installed with an air space restricts the transfer of far-infrared radiation making it an ideal material to be used for underdeck application.

‘INSUshield’ is a non-fibrous, fire retardant, closed cell, tri dimensional chemically crosslinked polyethylene foam XLPE. An ideal environment friendly insulation material, with a perfect solution for all your insulation needs for ducts, roofs, pipes, vessels, etc. The divergent advantages of ‘INSUshield’ are ease of installation, low thermal conductivity and good moisture and vapour resistance preventing microbial growth and optimum condensation protection.Contact Atul Khanna, General Manager - Thermal Insulation Division,The Supreme Industries Ltd. tel: 022 67710000email: [email protected] web: www.supreme.co.in

million square meters of ceramic and porcelain tiles, 4.6 million pieces of bath ware and 24 million pieces of tableware.

Specialising in high-quality ceramic wall and floor tiles, Gres Porcellanato and sanitary ware, RAK Ceramics has more than 8,000 production models, with new designs added almost every week to its portfolio. Tiles are manufactured in a variety of sizes, from 10 cm x 10 cm up to 125 cm x 185 cm, the widest range offered in the ceramic field.

In a candid interview with The Inside Track, Mr. Santosh Nema, CEO, RAK Ceramics, India, gave us some interesting insights on the journey of RAK Ceramics so far and the road ahead.

Can you share a brief account of the genesis of the RAK brand?

RAK is a relatively young company having started in 1991 in UAE as compared to its other competitors. The company’s mission of producing the world’s finest quality tiles has been retained and nurtured over the past 20 years. In the late 90’s and early 2000’s, RAK’s products had been imported to India. The products received a very good response in terms of quality and durability and there was a shortage of supply over the demand. Seeing this, within a few years, RAK decided to open a manufacturing plant here and RAK India started its operations in the year 2004.

From then, the company has only widened its reach and the dealer distribution model became imperative with the growth in business. To have a geographical reach across the country, RAK India appointed dealers very soon after its Indian operations commenced. This decision has paid off well for the company in terms of increasing the reach and customer base across the country. RAK India now has over 1000 dealers offering various products and designs in the tiles segment. Also, the response has been so commendable that we have started a nationwide road show called ‘RAK Aapke Saher’, which will cover almost 50 cities in next one and half years. Besides, shop-in-shop concepts and RAK exclusive privilege stores in the country to reach commercial and residential expansion in tier 2 and tier 3 cities where the demand for vitrified and ceramic tiles has also grown. This distribution model has allowed RAK India to cater to tiling demands across the country.

How does RAK compare in price and quality with other competing brands? What is the USP of the materials used and consequently the finished product? What are your plans in the short term?

RAK Ceramics started its operations in India in 2004 and setup its own manufacturing plant in Samalkot, Andhra Pradesh in 2005. In India, RAK Ceramics has the largest and most modern vitrified tile manufacturing plant in Andhra

Pradesh with manufacturing capacity of 30,000 sq.mts. of vitrified tiles and about 2000 sanitary ware pieces per day. RAK Ceramics is the only company in India to manufacture 10 distinct variants of vitrified Tiles.

The company also has a strong sanitary ware division, manufacturing several product lines from its plant in Andhra Pradesh. Our company drives for excellence and an insatiable appetite for quality and customer satisfaction were accredited with the ISO 9001 certification by CICS (Ceramic Industry Certification Scheme), UK.

RAK has started expanding its ceramic tile portfolio with over a 100 new wall tile design concepts. We are setting up a manufacturing plant with capacity to produce 20,000 sq.mts. tiles every day eventually surging to 50,000 sq. mts. within 5 years somewhere in Gujarat-Rajasthan area.

We are also going to increase our product portfolio in bath ware products and vanities and aim to be a Rs. 2,000 crore turnover company by 2017. In future RAK’s focus in the next few years would be to offer a wide spectrum of wall and floor tile options in ceramic and vitrified base. RAK’s digitally printed tiles will be the prime focus for launching more designs in floor tiles category in varied sizes suiting all forms of applications.

What have been some of your biggest challenges? How would you rate the success achieved by RAK?

The biggest concern of the industry is the import of Chinese tiles in India which has eroded profit margins of al l brands in the market. We are hoping that the government makes a level playing field for local industry by imposing anti-dumping duty on products from China.

Another big challenge for us as company is to service efficiently t h e who l e coun t r y d e sp i t e

Keeping in line with the ever-in-vogue size-zero concepts, RAK porcelain tiles are lightweight, easy to handle and designed for fast and accurate installations

being in South India. We are investing in supply chain for this and would ensure maximum 48 hours delivery in all towns above one lac population in phase-1 of the project.

In terms of achievement, I believe the modern Indian consumer is now well aware about international designs and the demand has shifted towards Europe and imported tiles in the upper end of the market. They have knowledge of designs making waves globally and hence expect the same level of ambiance for their abode as well.

RAK Ceramics is dedicated to bring designs in vogue globally at the doorstep of the Indian consumer which makes us a most trusted brand among users. I believe this is our

achievement within short span of our India operation.

What are some of the innovations and deve l opment s we c an hope to see from RAK in the near future?

We at RAK Ceramics endeavor to bring out something new and innovative which will benefit our customers. In our recent innovations we have come up with RAK Slim, a collection of ultra-thin tiles, with its thickness measuring less than

one-fifth of an inch (4.8 mm) and offered in size of 600 X 1200. Keeping in line with the ever-in-vogue size-zero concepts, RAK Slim porcelain tiles are lightweight, easy to handle and designed for fast and accurate installations. Also we have added rustic finish tiles to our portfolio of RAK Nanopix digitally printed vitrified slabs in size 1000 X 1000 mm which is a first in the industry for such huge size. Soon we shall offer l.5 metre x 30 metre tiles which only 5 players in world can produce. This will cater to ultra-high net worth individuals and top end luxury projects.

What is your perception regarding the growth of RAK in the coming years?

RAK since its inception has been a strong player in the Western and Southern parts of India. In due course we have also grown in the Eastern and Northern zone and they are picking up very fast. Our products are also market specific as the premium products such as RAK Nanopix which is majorly tapped

for the urban consumers and recently we have launched Venezia Classic, Venezia DgGix and Venezia Capstone with the focus on tier two cities and towns in mind.
