    The Wauseon Lady Indians' soccer

team opened the 2013 campaign Saturday

at home facing a tough, physical Continen-

    tal team.

The Pilots used a goal in each half to

secure the win. Their rst goal came at the

27:42 mark of the rst half and their in-

surance goal was scored at the 36:34 mark

    of the second half.

    Wauseon coach, Kelsey Newman,

summed up her team's performance say-ing "It was disappointing not to start theseason with a win," Newman said. "Wecreated a lot of opportunities, we justcouldn't quite nish them. I thought weshowed a lot of potential though, we justneed to tweak some things."

The Indians had 11 shots on target, 13shots on goal and goalie Katie Spieles n-ished with eight saves.

Wauseon Lady Indians LoseOpener To Continental 2-0

    By: Bill Bray

THE REPORTERContinental handed Wauseon a season

opening loss 5-2 on Saturday.Leo Rendon scored both of the Indians

goals. One of his goals came from 35 yards

from the net.Coach Scott Hoover was sorry that his

team came out so at to start the game.I was very disappointed we were so at

for it being the rst game of the season. We played much better in the second half.Every time we got a rally going something

happened, like a questionable call that

gave Continental a penalty kick score.

Hoover said the bottom line was that

the Indians just did not play very good de-

fense in the season opening loss. When

you score two goals that should be enough

to win, Hoover concluded. Wauseon is

back on the road Tuesday when they trav-

el to Ottawa Glandorf to take on the state

    power Titans.

Certain names have certain connotations attached. You think Mantle, Ruth,

DiMaggio and Musial, and you think baseball excellence. You think Manning, and

you think football...particularly the quarterback position. When the name

Clingaman is brought up in and around the Stryker area, the connotation is excel-

lence in the game of golf. It is simply a natural association.

For years, it was a Clingaman that had the record low score at Riverside

Greens. That record eventually fell, but along came a new generation of

Clingamans, and the record again rests in the Clingaman family...namely, Terence

    Clingaman.

The Stryker Panthers have a reputation of high profile, low scoring golf, and for

the past five years, there has been at least one Clingaman on the team. First it was

Hunter, the younger brother of Terence. Last year, Tanner and Hunter joined

forces on the team with Terence as an assistant to Head Coach John Ruffer. After

Hunter graduated earlier this year, another Clingaman has joined the fold,

    Hayden.

Prior to the start of the 2013 high school season, Tanner and Hayden were tak-

ing part in Northwestern Ohio Junior Golf Association tournaments across the

area. Once again, the Clingaman tradition came to the fore as the brothers

Clingaman set torrid paces that few could follow in the events that they competed.

Tanner was recognized as the 2013 NWOJGA Male Player of the Year, and for good

reason. Over the four tournament run, he captured three first place finishes and

    finished with the following record...

June 25 at Eagle Rock First place - 78

June 27 at Auglaize First place - 75

July 1 at Pike Run First place - 78

July 9 at White Pines Third place - 80

Of course Hayden was not to be denied. The incoming freshman at Stryker High

School made a name for himself in 14-15 age group in the same tournaments and

    more, with the following results...

    June 17 at Ironwood - 89

    June 25 at Eagle Rock - 87

    June 27 at Auglaize - 89

    July 1 at Pike Run - 90

July 9 at White Pines - 75 (the lowest score of any golfer in any age group)

July 17 at Country Acres Second place - 88

With the summer tournament play now over and the high school season under-

way, the Stryker Panthers have a one-two punch of experience in the field. It

should come as no surprise to anyone that they share the same name...Clingaman.
