Early Advantage Stands AsToledo Christian Downs Hilltop 25-10

    By: Timothy Kays

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

The final score might not indicate it,

but the Hilltop Cadets are learning from

their growing pains. On September 20

versus TAAC rival Toledo Christian, the

Cadet Cadre learned to adjust for supe-

rior team speed. Unfortunately for the

    hometown boys, the adjustment arrived

too late to compensate for a 25-point

hole as the Eagles came away with a

    25-10 win over the Cadets.

The Hilltop vulnerability to the option

is apparently the worst kept secret in

the state, and TC quarterback Brett

Freeman was quick to take advantage of

the situation. On their opening posses-sion, the Cadets got a first down on a

Quinn Smith to Chad Champion pass,

but the drive fizzled. The snap to punter

Miklo Abner sailed over his head, and

the ball was downed at the Hilltop four.

On the first play, Freeman took the

snap and ran around the left end for a

touchdown with 9:48 remaining in the

first. The PAT failed, but TC had an

early lead that they would not surren-

    der.

Hilltop took over at their own 20.

Runs by Champion and Abner brought

the ball out to the 45. Facing a second

and 17, Smith ran for 15, and Champion

picked up the first down with a run of

three. The drive died there though, forc-

ing a punt that had the promise of pin-ning the Eagles deep in their own terri-

tory. Abner did his part by forcing the

TC returner back inside his own five to

field the ball, but poor special teams

pursuit on the part of Hilltop allowed

the returner to find the left corner and

sprint up the sideline where he was

finally stopped just short of midfield...

    opportunity lost.

It took Freeman and the Eagles just

three running plays to push the Cadets

back inside their own five. The Cadets

regrouped and held, and with the help

of an illegal motion call, they pushed

the Eagles back to the 10. On the first

play after the penalty though, Freeman

again pulled the ball down and took off

for another score with 1:48 left in the

first. The first pass of the night for theEagles, a two-point PAT attempt, fell

incomplete, but the first period ended

with the Cadets looking at a 12-0 defi-

    cit.

Hilltop was unable to move the ball

and again punted it away. Again the

Eagles moved the ball on the ground

down to the Hilltop 31. From there the

second pass of the evening from

Freeman found a receiver all alone in

the secondary. By the time he was

stopped, TC had a first and goal at the

nine. Again fortune smiled on the Cadets

as a first down sweep lost almost four.

On second down, Freeman rolled to his

left, only to slip on the rain-slicked Daft

Field turf, bringing up a third and goal

from the 18. The next play saw theCadets lead-footed and awaiting a run,

leaving a receiver all alone at the goal

line. The pass made it an 18-0 game

with 7:34 left in the half, and the ensu-

ing PAT kick made it 19-0.

Hilltop got the ball back at their 20,

and went three and out. Abners punt

was partially deflected, with the ball

rolling dead at the TC 48. A pass inter-

ference call moved the ball to the Cadet

    25. It was shortly afterward that

Freeman ran the ball in from four yards

out to make it a 25-0 game with 1:48

left in the half. The PAT failed, and the

half ended with the hometown boys

    staring down a 25-0 shutout.

In the second half, the Cadet defense

carried forward what they were begin-

ning to display late in the first half...

stay at home pursuit. Led by Cayden

Blaisdell, the line was not allowing

Freeman to bust off big plays with his

legs, and also giving him plenty to think

about on the five step drop.

    The Hilltop offense, sluggish during

the first half, remained sluggish in the

third, but they did not have costly drive-killing gaffes as they did earlier. Hilltop

took the ball at their own 20 and slowly,

    methodically drove the ball downfield

for the remainder of the period. TC had

the answer though, foiling the Cadets

with a goal line stand that forced a

turnover on downs at the one. As

Holgate found out the week prior, it is

one thing to celebrate a stand inside the

five against Hilltop...it is far and away

another thing to capitalize on it. A

handoff to the running back brought

the dj vu voodoo back for the Hilltop

defense as the ball carrier was swal-

lowed up in a sea of red for a safety. The

Cadets failed to get six, but they busted

up the shutout with two points.

The Eagles tried to get the momen-tum back with the pass, but the line

    pressure kept Freeman from standing

in the pocket. Under pressure, he

uncorked an errant pass that was

picked off by Austin Batt at the Hilltop

    47. The Cadets again worked the ball

into the TC defense, but with time run-

ning short, they too went to the air. It

was then that Smith found Batt with a

pass to the TC ten. With the Eagles

defense now on their heels, Abner took

the handoff on the next play and ran it

in for the score with 7:02 remaining in

the game. Abner then ran in the two-

point PAT to make it a 25-10 game.

Neither offense was able to mount a

    threat from that point forward.

Hilltop outgained the Eagles on the

ground and in the air. Most of this was

done after adjustments were made, and

    mental mistakes were minimalized. The

79-yard drive that stalled on the TC one

was a prime example. Once the defense

began to stay at home and pursue, the

    Eagles offense slowed down dramati-

cally. As an example after hitting on two

big pass plays early, Freeman finished

the game by going 5 of 14 for 95 yards,

a score and 2 picks. Its not that Hilltop

is not getting it, its just that by the

time that they do, theyre already in a

    hole...but that too is improving.

Smith was 10 of 29 for 125 yards

through the air. Champion pulled in 4

passes for 40 yards, and gained 40

yards on the ground in 8 carries. Batt

caught a pass for 33 yards; Grapengetercaught 2 for 28 yards, and ran twice for

7 yards, and Trent Taylor snagged a

pair for 24 yards. Smith ran 7 times for

35 yards, but the workhorse was Abner

as the diesel ran 20 times for 100 yards.

Hilltop goes on the road next week to

bring their TAAC tour to Ottawa Hills.

September 20th A Bleak Day For TheMontpelier Locomotives Versus Swanton

SWANTON - There are days in which

so many things go awry, you just want

to walk away, go back to bed, and try

to reboot the day using the version 2.0

upgrade. Montpelier had such a day on

    September 20. Cloudy, dismal, and

perpetual rain followed the Locos team

bus to Lucas County, but the destina-

tion was to face a vulnerable Swanton

that was not only winless, but coming

off a 62-19 humbling against Wauseon.

If there was a time to strike...this was

    it.

    Or was it?

    The Bulldogs took the meteorologi-

cal misery of the evening, added a mea-

sure of purple pain, and unleashed it

on the Locos. The Bulldogs looked any-

thing but down and damaged as they

hurled a 34-0 shutout at the Locos.

The game was not the only hurting

suffered by the team on this evening.

Their stat tracking software gave up

the ghost during the game, resulting in

a statistical blackout of everything but

    the final score.

Northwood Rangers Offense RunsRoughshod Over The Edon Blue Bombers

    By: Kent Hutchison

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    NORTHWOOD- The Edon Blue

Bombers took the long bus ride east of

Toledo to do battle with the defending

    TAAC champion Northwood Rangers.

After jumping out to an 8-0 lead, the

Bombers had to battle a steady down-

pour along with the offensive onslaught

of the Rangers. Edon gave up over 500

yards of offense to Northwood en route

    to a 40-27 loss.

The opening kickoff was received by

Edon. The Bombers covered 85 yards

in nine plays and chewed 3:20 off the

clock for a touchdown. The drive was

capped when Trevor Green raced 30

yards to paydirt. Edon faked the extra

point attempt as Kaden Sapp found

Brock Thiel all alone to take an 8-0 lead

with 8:40 left in the first quarter.

    On Northwoods first position Edon

held the Rangers to a three and out,

and after the punt took over at their 39

yard line. The Bombers were once

again on the attack moving the ball in

    the positive direction. However, two

holding penalties during the drive left

Edon facing a 4 and 12 from the Edon

47 yard line. After a timeout, the

Bombers decided to go for it. The gam-

ble did not pay off for Edon as the pass

by Sapp was intercepted and returned

to the Edon 39 yard line.

    The decision really backfired as

Northwood marched the 39 yards need-

ed in six plays for a score. The PAT was

good cutting the Edon advantage to

    8-7.

Edon was held short of a first down

and Mike Peeples punted the ball back

to the Rangers. Northwood was in pro-

cess of moving the ball as the first

    quarter expired. With 10:33 remaining

in the second quarter, the Rangers

crossed the goal line once again to take

the lead 14-8 after the extra point kick

    sailed through the uprights.

The Bombers needed little time to

answer. When Sapp hit Thiel for a 31

    yard touchdown, and Peeples nailed

the kick, Edon was back on top 15-14

with 8:18 left in the second stanza.

    Northwood responded with two con-

secutive scores to close the half and up

    their lead to 26-15.

After Northwood took the kickoff to

begin the second half, the Bomber

defense responded with a three and

out. The Ranger punt left Edon on

their side of midfield. The Bombers

methodically moved the ball down to

the Northwood six yard line, but left

themselves facing a fourth and four. A

false start penalty moved the pigskin

back five more yards. This time taking

the risk on fourth down paid huge divi-

dends as Connor Hug scooped a toss

from Sapp off the turf for six points.

Peeples kick was true once again leav-

    ing Edon trailing 26-21.

The Rangers appeared to be poised

to put more points on the board as they

moved the ball to the Bomber 36 yard

line. However, faced with a fourth andone, Heath Brown and a host of

Bombers stuffed the run to halt the

drive with 4:46 left in the third quarter.

The Edon offense sprinted back on

the field after the stop and took posses-

sion at their 39 yard marker. In six

plays the Bombers moved the ball down

to the Northwood 45. However, a loss

of five yards on 3rd and 7 to go forced

Edon to punt. Peeples hit the ball well

as it rolled out of bounds at the

    Northwood 15 yard line.

After one play by the Rangers the

quarter ended. The final frame started

with a bang for the Rangers as they

added to the point total on an 84 yard

TD pass that was tipped by the Bombers.

The extra point was good puttingNorthwood up by 12 points, 33-21.

Just when it appeared the Bombers

were back in the game, their fortune

went from bad to worse. On the ensu-

ing kickoff the Northwood kicker almost

whiffed the ball, but a Ranger team-

mate fell on the unintentional onside

kick. Northwood needed just two plays

to cross the goal line once again to up

essentially put the game away increas-

    ing the lead to 40-21.

However, the men in blue and silver

were not ready to give up just yet as

they started the series at their 23 yard

line. In less than a minute, and in four

plays, the Bombers moved the ball to

midfield. The duo of Sapp to Hug

struck once again to cover the final fifty

yards. However, the two point attempt

    was unsuccessful leaving Edon trailing

40-27 with only 3:07 left in the contest.

As they had done all night,

    Northwood continued churning up

yards on the ground. The Rangers had

no problem moving the ball deep in

Edon territory to run out the clock and

end the hopes of the Bombers.

    Kaden Sapp had another respect-

able night for Edon as he completed 18

of 33 attempts for 265 yards, three

    touchdowns and two interceptions. He

also scampered for 90 yards on 15 car-

ries. Trevor Green added 48 rushing

    yards, including one touchdown.

Connor Hug added two touchdowncatches for the Bombers and Brock

Thiel one score via the air. Once again

penalties were an Achilles heel for

Edon as they were flagged 8 times for a

    loss of 60 yards.

The loss drops Edon to 2-2 on the

    season.

    Wauseon Indians Pull A Close

    Win From Delta Panthers, 20-13

PLAYING TAKEAWAY ... Wauseons Noah Castle (11) tries to strip the ball from a Delta

    ball carrier.

    By: Bill BrayTHE VILLAGE REPORTER

The magical connection of Ty Suntkento Kris Boysel was the saving grace forWauseon in Friday's last minute 20-13victory over the Delta Panthers.

For 47 minutes and 18 seconds theWauseon Indians trailed the Panthers.Their fourth straight win was in serious

jeopardy as the clock wound down to 42seconds. At that point the sea parted andSuntken found Boysel in the northeastcorner of the end zone for the game win-ner.

Up to the exciting conclusion it was theWauseon defense led by Aaron Schuette,Axel Bueter, Cesar Juarez, Nate Suntken,

Alec Vonier, Derek Rupp, Noah Castle,Anthony Werder, Zac Robinson, Kris Boy-sel and Jake Flory that stepped up to theplate and had their best performance ofthe season.

The rst half stats showed the domi-nance of Delta for the rst 24 minutes. ThePanthers had possession of the ball 15:46compared to 8:14 for the Indians. Theyhad accumulated 151 yards rushing andthrew the air during that time.

Delta drew rst blood with 6:17 left inthe opening stanza. In their rst posses-sion of the game, Delta used 11 plays tomove 62 yards to the rst score with a 31yard run by Dylan Norstrant. Ethan Ed-wards' extra point kick was no good andthe Panthers were up 6-0.

On the Indians rst possession of thegame and rst play, Suntken threw an in-terception as Dylan Norstrant returned theball to the Wauseon 48 yard line.

The Indians defense had their rst stopas Norstrant's dive to get the one yard

needed on fourth down was thwarted. The sputtering Wauseon offense was

again forced to punt on their next posses-sion and Delta set up shop at their own10-yard line. The Panthers struggled tomove the ball 15 yards on their next foursnaps. Then on a third and ve, Noah Par-

sons' pass was picked off by the ever pres-ent Boysel and the senior gave the Indiansthe ball back on their own 42 yard line.

After a 18 yard gain by Bueter, Sunt-ken was thrown for a two-yard loss thenhe threw an incomplete pass to make it athird and 12 at the Delta 42. On the thirddown play, Suntken found Axel Bueterwith a pass and the senior back gallopedall the way into the end zone as the Indi-ans tied the game at 6-6 when Josh Whit-comb's kick sailed wide right with 8:49 re-maining in the rst half.

With both offenses struggling as therains came and made the eld wetter andwetter, the Panthers got the next breakwhen Suntken fumbled and a Delta de-fender jumped on the loose ball with 1:44

left in the half.Delta took advantage of the Wauseon

error as they scored in just four playswith a 16 yard sprint by Jesse Beverly.Edwards' kick was good and the Pantherswent to the locker room with a 13-6 lead.

After deferring the kickoff to the secondhalf, Wauseon came out for their rst pos-session of the second half. The Indians, penalized eight times for 66 yards, saw thedrive end on their own 45 yard line.

Delta's rst drive was a three and outas the defense continued their excellentplay. The Panthers three plays netted sev-en yards and they were forced to punt.

The teams traded unsuccessful drivesas Wauseon' high power offense continued

to struggle through the third quarter. With a 13-6 decit, if the Indians were

to win, they were going to have to have aspectacular fourth quarter on the wet and

    rainy Harmon Field turf.

After a six-play drive gave the Panthersonly nine yards. The Indians had posses-

sion for the rst time in the nal quarter. After a Bueter six-yard run, Suntken ran

twice for ve yards and a rst down atthe Delta 46. Two more runs by Bueter

gaining 12 yards and the offense was -

nally beginning to play their brand of foot-ball. After an illegal procedure penalty on

Noah Castle, The ball was moved back veyards. From there Suntken ran for four

yards then, on the play of the drive, found

his favorite receiver Boysel for a 29 yardstrike that put the ball on the two yard

line. Suntken bolted in for the score onthe next snap and at the 7:35 mark of the

fourth, the Indians were back to within oneat 13-12. Coach Travis Cooper made the

decision to go for two points but the Pan-

thers defense stuffed the play and droppedSuntken short of the goal line.

Delta took possession with 7:35 left and

put together a 10-play drive. They came upempty however as the Wauseon defenseagain did their jobs as on a fourth and ve

Delta's Noah Parsons threw an incomplete

pass to end the drive and turn the ball overwith 2:58 remaining.

It would be Wauseon's nally opportu-nity to somehow pull out the victory after

trailing for most of the game. THE DRIVEstarted on the Wauseon 27 yard line. Ty

Suntken had the pressure of the commu-

nity on his shoulders as he stood in shotgun formation to attempt to win the game.

On the rst play, Suntken raced 11yards to the Wauseon 38. A personal

foul on the Panthers tacked on another15 yards to the Delta 47. Boysel rushed

for three yards, Suntken ran for no gain,

Suntken found Boysel for a nine-yard pass

giving the Indians a very important rstdown. Suntken spiked the ball to stop theclock with 1:59 left. On second and 10,

Suntken hit Zac Robinson for 12 yards.Robinson nearly broke it for a touchdown

but was tripped up at the Delta 23. Sunt-

ken scrambled on the next play and lost19 yards back to the Delta 40. With the

game clock ticking away Suntken calmlyfell back in the pocket and looked long for

Boysel. The pass was perfectly executedand hit Boysel right in the hands as the

receiver grabbed the ball out of the rain

soaked air and fell into the end zone forthe winning score with :42 seconds re-

maining. Suntken hit Castle across themiddle with for the two-point conversion

and the Indians had their second straight

NWOAL victory 20-13.Unofcially Suntken nished with 65

yards on 21 carries while Bueter nishedwith 61 yards on 11 carries. Suntken was

10 of 17 passing for 157 yards and twoscores. Boysel was the leading receiver

hauling in six receptions for 88 yards and

the winning touchdown catch. The Indians now turn their attention to

the Liberty Center Tigers who fell to Pat-rick Henry Friday night. Game time is set

    for 7PM at Harmon Field.

OTTAWA - Fourteen teams and 137

total runners were in the field for the

Blue event at the September 14 Ottawa

    Glandorf Invitational, but informed eyes

were specifically following two of those

fourteen teams...one of which was the

    Wauseon Lady Indians.

Led by junior Taylor Vernot, the

Lady Indians have been a powerful

    presence everywhere their shoes have

hit the ground this season, as evidencedby their 15th place tie in the D-II

OATCCC polls. The other team being

    watched was the Napoleon Lady

Wildcats, who came into the event

ranked #7 in the same poll.

Vernot finished first in the event, but

the Lady Cats had the numbers, plac-

ing four of their five scoring runners in

    Although they did not marshal

Pettisville Junior High Girls Finish Third At OGIOTTAWA - The Lone Ranger and

Tonto. Batman and Robin. The Cisco

Kid and Pancho. Where there was one...

the other was always close by. The com-

parisons bring to mind Elizabeth Sauder

    and Kamryn Hostetler of Pettisville...

never far from each other. Proof of the

point has been replayed over and over

this season, and it was made evident

    second and Hostetler third. Combined

with a seventh place finish from Nichole

Foor, the Lady Blackbirds finished third

in team competition in the event.

Several other local schools were also
