PIONEER - In varsity boys action

Thursday night December 12, the NorthCentral Eagles set the tone early against

the Hilltop Cadets, as they would jump

out to a 26-6 lead after only one quarter ofplay, and would not look back. The Eagles

would cruise to a 69-33 victory over theCadets.

The North Central lead would grow evenmore in the second quarter, as the Eagles

outscored Hilltop 15-14 in the quarter, ex-

panding their lead to 21 points, and mak-ing it 41-20 at the intermission. The Ea-

gles were 8 for 8 from beyond the arch inthe rst half.

The Cadets would go cold in the thirdperiod, and would only be able to nd the

basket on one eld goal and two free throws

for a total of only four points. Meanwhile, their opponents would continue their of-

fensive onslaught, scoring 18 more points

in quarter, and the North Central lead now

stood at 59-24.The fourth quarter would not be much

different from the others, as it would be

the Eagles outscoring the Cadets 10-9 inthe fourth and nal quarter of play, sealing

the win for North Central 69-33.Clayton Ferguson was leading scorer

for North Central, scoring 21 points in thecontest. Josh Sawyer contributed 19 to

the Eagle cause, Dylan Hutchison scored

18, Jordan Reeves put eight on the board,Branden Turner had seven, and Chase

Legacy and Jordan Bailey both nishedwith two points a piece.

For the Cadets, Quinn Smith and TimManeval both were able to score seven

points, Mikla Abrer had six, Ryan Brooker

with ve, Jalen Towers scored four, andKelby Grime and Erik Stipe both had two

    points.

EDON - Although they were able to

keep within striking distance for most of

the contest, the Edon Bombers were un-able to overtake the Pettisville Blackbirds,

and would end up being defeated on De-cember 12, 44-31

Although the Bombers never lead afterthe end of any quarter, they were able to

keep it close. After one quarter of action, the Blackbirds only held an 11-4 lead overEdon. That lead expanded to 12 points at

halftime, 26-14.The difference in the matchup was the

free throw differential between the two

teams. Pettisville made 18 of the 27 free

throws they took for a free throw shootingpercentage of 66%, compared to the nine

of 17 free throws Edon made on the nightfor 52%.

This helped lead the Blackbirds to a 33-22 third quarter, and eventually a 44-31

victory.Thiel lead the way for the Bombers with

12 points, followed by Brown with ve,

Wickers, Peeples, and Wolkowski all withfour a piece, and Bloir had two.

STRYKER - The Stryker Panthers and

Fayette Eagles played a closely contest-

ed matchup on December 12. The Pan-

thers would end up edging out Fayette

and head coach Todd Mitchell 46-38.Stryker would gain the lead in the

first quarter of action, going up on the

Eagles 14-10 after one period of action.

There would not be much scoring by

either team in the second period, as the

Panthers would only score nine, and the

Eagles would only be able to put up five

points. The Panthers would control a 23

    15 half time lead.

Fayette was able to narrow the Pan-

ther lead down to only one possession

by the end of the third quarter, as they

would outscore Stryker 13-7 in the pe-

riod, bring the Eagles within three, 31-

    28.

However, ten fouls in the second

half by Fayette would give the Panthers

    multiple free throw opportunities, and

    Stryker would capitalize, hitting seven

shots from the charity stripe in the sec-

ond half, compare to only one made by

Fayette in the same period of time. Thiswould help to propel the Panthers to a

win with a final score of 46-38.

    Grant Schaffner, Chandler Sanford,

and Tyler Cox all had eight points in

the contest for the Eagles. Jerad Seiler

scored five points, Skylar Lantz dropped

    four, Wade Burkholder contributed

three, and Koby Biddix had two.

The Panthers were lead by Parker

Ruffer who also lead all scorers with

    14 points, Tanner Clingaman scored

12, Brannan Woolace banked 11, Dean

Beamont finished the night with eight,

    and Brody Shock had one.

With Stryker moves to 2-1 (2-0 in

BBC play) with the win, and the loss

drops Fayette to 3-2 (1-1 in the BBC).

PIONEER - In varsity action, the NorthCentral Eagles would fall behind to the

Fairview Apaches early on in the gameon December 17, and would be unable to

catch up. Fairview would go on to get thewin by a score of 62-46.

It did not take long for the Apaches to

grab a lead. While only two players wereable to nd the bottom of the net for the

Eagles, six different players would scorefor Fairview in the opening quarter, allow-

ing them to jump out to an 18-5 lead afterone quarter.

A trio of three point shots is all the of-

fense North Central would be able to mus-ter in the second quarter. The Apache lead

would grow to 20 points by halftime, asFairview owned a 34-14 halftime lead.

Clayton Ferguson would do his best

to get the Eagles back in to the game in

the second half, nailing four three pointshots in the third and fourth quarters. The

Apache offense proved to still be too muchfor the Eagles to handle with ten separate

players scoring for Fairview in the contest. The Apaches would hold a 46-30 third

quarter lead, and eventually defeat the

Eagles by a 62-45 nal score.Clayton Fergusons ve three pointers

helped him to lead the team in scoringwith 19, Dylan Hutchison followed notch-

ing nine points, Branden Turner tallied upa total of six, Chase Legacy contributed

four, Josh Sawyer had three, and Ethan

Douglas and Jordan Bailey both nishedwith two.

EDON - December 16 saw the Edon Lady

Bombers fall at home to the Tigers of Lib-

erty Center by a score of 56-46.The Bombers were able to keep the con-

test close in the the rst quarter, as theTigers were only able to pull ahead by six

points. After one quarter of play, the scorestood at 19-13 in favor of Liberty Center.

The second period of action was almost

identical scoring wise, as the Bombers put13 more points on the board, and the Ti-

gers scored 18. This gave Liberty Center ahalftime lead of 37-26. The Bombers were

kept alive in this contest due to the highscoring of Alex Kiess who was able to put

22 points on the board for the Bombers.

However, the rest of the team was un-able to consistently put the ball in the bas-

ket, as without Kiess, the rest of the teammade a combined total of eight of the 40

shots they took, for a shooting percentage

    of only 20 percent.

The inability of the Bombers to score ef-ciently would prove to be their downfall, as

even though Liberty Center was only ableto score eight points in the third quarter,

the Bombers could not capitalize. At theend of the third quarter, the Tigers lead the

Bombers by a score of 45-34.

Edon would be unable to close the gapin the fourth and nal quarter of action.

Liberty Center would go on to close out thenight with a 56-46 victory.

Alex Kiess set the scoring pace for theBombers, as she scored 22 of their 46

    points. Kaitlin Chrisman followed with

eight points, Jordan Matthews and Han-nah Brehm-Gutting had six a piece, and

Kaitlyn Manahan and Kaitlyn Sonnebergerboth nished the night scoring two points.

WAUSEON - A pair of high scorers ruledthe night on December 16 in Wauseon, as

Natalie Koenig would put up 21 points for

the Indians, and Conner Varner wouldcontribute 25 points to the Panther cause.

The Tribe would come out victorious in theend, taking down the Panthers by a score

of 58-49.The Tribe started the night off with

the hot hand, as both Maddie Richer and

Natalie Koenig would both hit three pointshots for the Indians. For the Panthers,

Varners offensive explosion also startedoff well, scoring six of the eight points in

the quarter for Stryker. As the quarterwound down, Wauseon held a 12-8 lead.

    Conor Sullivan would contribute ve

points for Stryker in the second periodof play, trying to mount a comeback, and

get lead to change hands to the Panthers. However, the Indian offense had what

could be their most complete team game ofthe season as eight different players scored

for the Tribe, including yet another three

pointer from Koenig, which allowed themto take a 27-19 in to the locker rooms for

the intermission. The third quarter would see yet another

Koenig three pointer fall, but Varner wouldanswer back with a three of her own. The

Indians continued to play well as a team

though, and their lead grew to 44-31 at theend of three quarters of play.

Free throws would play a major rolein the second half of the contest. Stryker

would only be able to make it to the charitystripe for two shots in the second half. On

the other hand, Wauseon would go to the

line for 12 shots, and capitalizing on ten ofthose free throws, including Sariah Yackee

sinking 6 consecutive free throws in thefourth period. The clutch shooting allowed

the Indians to survive a comeback attempt

by the Panthers when Varner and Sullivan

combined to hit four three point shots inthe nal quarter. The Indians would holdon though 58-48 and get their third win in

a row after dropping their rst four gameof the season.

by Varner who put up an impressive 25points in the contest. She was followed by

Sullivan with 15, Maddie Uribes with fourpoints, Ashley Haines put three points on

the board, and Megan Grabez roundingout the scoring with two.

The Tribe had three double digit scorers

as Koenig lead the team with 21, Yackeescoring 14, and Richer putting up 12. Sal-

ly Frank had three points for the Indians, and Kylie Archibeque, Anna Marshall, Lexi

Alex Kiess canned a trio of treys and agame-high 13 to lead the Belles in Bomber

Blue past Antwerp in the opening round of

the annual tournament, 35-22.Backing Kiess was Kaitlyn Sonneberg-

    PETTISVILLE- A high powered Blackbird

offense proved to be too much for the lady

Bombers of Edon to handle as they were de-feated Friday night, December 13, by Pettis-

ville 58-35.The rst quarter of play was a tightly con-

tested one, as both teams would trade the

lead. The Bombers only trailed by one point,15-14, at the end of the opening quarter of

the contest. However, the second quarterwould see an offensive explosion by Pettis-

ville, as the Blackbirds would outscore theBombers in the quarter 20-3, and Edon

would trail 35-17 at halftime after only being

down a point after the rst quarter. The second half would not see a change

in the lead. Edons decit grew to 23 points

by the end of the third, as they trailed 52-29.

The Blackbirds slowed the game down inthe nal quarter of the night, as both teams

would only put six points on the board each, wrapping up the contest with a nal score

    of 59-35.

Although both teams shot 43 percentfrom the eld in the game, Edons 26 turn-

overs allowed Pettisville to take 24 moreshots than did the Bombers, which allowed

the Blackbird lead to grow.Leading the way offensively for the Bomb-

ers was Kaitlin Chrisman who had 15 points,

followed by Kaitlyn Manahan and JordanMatthews with six each, Baylee Gearhart

with three, Kaitlyn Sonneberger and Han-nah Kaylor both scoring two, and Breanna

    Davis ended with one.

WAUSEON - The Wauseon lady Indi-

ans took control of the match-up against

the Lady Locomotives early on, and never

looked back as the Tribe would cruise to a59-31 win Friday night.

The Indians jumped out to a 15-6 lead

at the end of the rst quarter of action, fol-lowing the lead of their top scorer Natalie

Koenig, who would end up with 18 points

on the night. The second quarter of play

saw the Locos score ten points, but yet the

Indian lead would still grow to 33-16 going

    in to halftime.

Montpeliers Hannah Blake did all she

could to try and get the Locos back in to

the game, scoring 12 points on the night,

but Montpelier was only able to make 11out of the 46 eld goals they attempted

for a shooting percentage of only 23 per-

cent on the night. Add on to that the fact

that the Locos free throw percentage was

also under 40 percent, and it is difcult to

mount any kind of come back.

The Tribe would hold on to their lead,

even after the reserves came in to play formuch of the nal quarter, and go on to win

the contest by a nal score of 59-31

Scoring for the Locomotives was Han-nah Blake with 12, Regan Steffes, Mad-

die Richmond, Marinna Mercer all scored

four, Haley Suffel banked three, and Bay-

lee Hageman and Audrey Pirtle both put

    two on the board.

Wauseon scoring was headed by Natalie

Koenig with 18, followed by Maddie Richer

with 14, Sariah Yackee with eight, Hannah

Blaylock put ve on the board, Lexie Lane

and Sally Frank both scored four pointsand Kylie Archibeque, Anna Marshall, and

FAYETTE - In girls varsity action it was

the Eagles of Fayette who came out on top

over the Stryker Panthers, 55-36, on De-cember 13.

Kaela Seiler set the pace for the Eagles, scoring 13 points, but the key to the Fay-

ette victory was the fact the Eagles had

four players who scored double digits, asopposed to the Panthers whose only dou-

ble digit scorer was Conner Varner, whoscored 23 of the 36 Panther points.

The contest was fairly even in the statcolumn, as both teams had 18 fouls, 14

turnovers, and two made three pointers, and Fayette had a slim 31-25 rebounding

edge, and an even slimmer advantage when

it came to free throws as Fayette made 13to Strykers 12 free throws. The difference

in the contest was the number of two pointshots that were made, with the Panthers

only able to sink nine of them, while Fay-ette was able to double that and sink 18

two point eld goals. The Eagles were able

to do so by creating open shots, and feed-

ing the open shooters the basketball, rack-

ing up 15 rebounds in the contest.

    SCORING BY QUARTER

    Stryker: 1st 6, 2nd 4, 3rd 10, 4th 16

    Fayette: 1st 13, 2nd 14, 3rd 11, 4th 17

Scoring for the Panthers was ConnerVarner dropping an impressive 23, Con-

nor Sullivan with six, Gabrielle Paxtonhad three, Ashley Harris scored two, and

Christie Huston and Maddie Uribes both

score one.As for the Eagles, Kaela Seiler lead

with 13, followed by Paige Keefer and Tay-lor Grifth both contributing 11, Alexis

Fruchey dropped 10, Jessie Wheeler hadeight, and Katelyn Bates nished with two

    points.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SUCCESS ON THE COURT, CONNER!ALL THE BEST FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT...

    CONGRATULATIONS

    CONNER!

    By: Timothy Kays

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

Sufce it to say, I have a working familiarity with the Varner sisters of Stryker.

First came Tayler, and her career as a Lady Panther. Second was Torey, not as tall as her older

sister, but one whose ferocity on the court always had her matched up defending the best player of

the opposition. Before I began taking pictures of Torey, I met her younger sister. At that time, Conner

Varner was a short, pudgy junior high kid that watched her older siblings from the sidelines.

    That was then...this is now.

Tayler and Torey have both graduated and are now denizens of The Ohio State University. As for

their kid sister, Conner, she has gone on to accomplish things in a Stryker Lady Panthers uniform

that neither of her older sisters could do. That short, pudgy junior high kid has pushed herself hard,

and with natural teenage growth along for the ride, Conner Varner has become one of the most well-

recognized and well-respected girls hoops players in the area. Her drive, determination and diligence

to a work ethic that is second to none has turned the pudgy kid into the latest Stryker Lady Panther

record a 1,000 point career...and that career is far from over.

Conner spent her rst two years playing alongside the likes of her sister Torey, Baily Grime, and

the legendary Brooke Ruffer. Although some may consider the term legendary a bit of a stretch, it

ts well as Ruffer was not just the last Lady Panther to break the 1,000-point barrier, she went onto break the all-time Lady Panther scoring record, and then followed that up by breaking the boys

record as well, making her the all-time leading scorer in everything in the history of Stryker High

School. This lineup, like the prior lineups that featured names like Boetz, Hancock, Myers and Laws,

proved to be a terror to the BBC, and were frequent net cutters during the postseason. When Conner

Varner stepped onto the oor for the rst time as a freshman though, she t in like she had been

there all along. Those teams that focused on stopping Ruffer and Grime quickly found that Stryker

was not rebuilding...with Conner Varner lacing em up, they were reloading. Rookie jitters, if any

existed, were nigh-on impossible to nd. She was every bit the threat that her superiors were, and

many an opposing team discovered the fact the hard way.

Was she playing in the shadows of the upperclassmen? I dont think so, she said. With defenses

doubling up on Ruffer, Conner would frequently get open for scoring opportunities upon which she

was quick to capitalize. Being behind her has taught me a lot...to look up to her, and using the same

stuff that she has to have success too.

Their college schedules precluded Tayler and Torey from attending the December 13 game against

Fayette in which Conner broke the 1,000-point barrier. That milestone, she said, was, ...the result of

all the hard work I put in. It wasnt a goal of mine; it just happened by the way I play...and the teams

been there for me. Its a big deal, but its not something that I brag about or tell a bunch of people

about. Its just about the hard work Ive put in. My teammates have had a big part of me getting towhere I am. I thank them for everything that theyve done for me, because I couldnt be where I am

without my former and current teammates and coaches.

Growing up watching one of the preeminent girls high school programs in this part of the state,

Conner knows Lady Panthers history, as well as her place in it. Theres denitely other people that

Ive looked up to since I was a little girl. The Boetz girls, the Myers girls, and knowing that you have

to live up to...the Stryker Lady Panther legacy. I knew that I had to get in the gym in the summer,

come in the morning, and put in a lot of hard work to not let down the older girls whove been here,

and the great coaching staff that we have. She considers the coaches, Head Coach Steve Brown, and

assistants Brett Greiser and Ed Ruffer, her heroes. I see them more than I see anybody else during

basketball season. Ive been able to grow close to them since my freshman year. Theyre pretty much

    family.

Ive been very fortunate, and this programs been very fortunate with the players that weve had,

said Coach Brown. Conner is a great example of what hard work and dedication can do for you. I

think that she is a true example of wanting to be a basketball player. Shes not the fastest player on

the oor, but shes probably the most determined. In the gym, in the preseason and in the summer...

thats where her time has been made. Shes just so determined to be good, and her team is very im-

portant to her. Her team goals are very high, and she knows that she has to have success to do that.

Shes in the gym every morning, Coach Brown continued. She stays after practice and gives

everything that shes got all the time. She started the season off with a severe ankle injury, and weabout had to put chains on her to keep her out of practice and scrimmages. Im not sure how many

kids would still be practicing and doing those things early on. She puts in extra time on conditioning.

We would have a hard practice, and she would be out running in the hall afterward. Its just the type

of kid she is. Shes a great kid and a great competitor, and extremely determined.

What advice does Conner have for the short, pudgy junior high girls that want to follow in her

footsteps? Put the time in, and believe in yourself, she said. You can keep working past that. Keep

working hard on things, and youll get past that stage and be able to become a better basketball

    player.

Conner is not just another pretty face that can wreck a defensive scheme on the court. She also

knows her way around a classroom or two. This 1,000-point scorer is also scoring a 4.0 GPA, and is

a common sight on the BBC Scholar Athlete list. Although she has the skills to win on the court and

the intellect to win in the classroom, there is a third element to the success of Conner Varner...a life

and character element that binds everything together. Conner is a Lady Panther of great faith...and

she is not hesitant to display that faith.

Its important to me, she said of her Christian faith. In bad times or bad days that I have, its

something thats always constant; its always there. Its something to be able to lean on. A big part

of where I am today is through the abilities that God has given me, and the ability for me to make

relationships with my teammates and other people through Him.Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 4:12 that, ...a threefold cord is not quickly broken. There have

been many who have eclipsed the 1,000-point mark. There are a few of them who also excelled scho-

lastically. Doing both with a 4.0 GPA is a rarity, but even more special is nding someone who can do

all of that, while openly binding everything together with a faith in God. Academic excellence, athletic

excellence and faith are the hallmarks that best describe Conner Varner, ... a threefold cord that is

    not quickly broken.
