Indians Roll To Third Straight Win 62-19

    By Bill Bray

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    Wauseon's high power offense showed

up for the third week in a row to pull away

from the Swanton Bulldogs in the Tribe'srst NWOAL game of the season 62-19.

Their third win of the season has alreadymatched the win column for the 2012 sea-

    son.Swanton, showing some improvements

in their offensive abilities, were able to

take the opening kickoff and march 67yards in 10 plays to take the early 7-0 lead

with 7:11 showing on the clock. It took Wauseon just six plays to go the

62 needed yards on their rst drive to tiethe game at 7-7. A 23-yard reverse to KrisBoysel was the back-breaker as the senior

speedster ran away from the Swanton de-fense for paydirt with 4:46 remaining in

the opening quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Swanton's An-

tonio Cervantes fumbled and the Indians

recovered with great eld position at theSwanton 45 yard line. Again, the offense,

who has been ring on all cylinders thelast three games, covered the distance in

six plays with the nal seven yards beingerased by Ty Sunken as the senior signal

caller crossed the goal line with 1:23 re-

maining to put the Indians up for good at14-7.

After a three and out for Swanton byan stingy Indians defense, the 'O' ready

to strike again. Suntken, on the secondplay from scrimmage, found Noah Castle

right down the middle of the eld for a 34

yard touchdown strike with 11:10 left inthe second quarter. Josh Whitcomb's kick

gave the Indians a 21-7 advantage. But again the offense of Swanton was

able to move the ball behind the running ofJordan Nyler and the passing of Bryce Mc-

Comb. After Matt Rainey carried for three

yards to the Indians 20, the drive stalledwith two incomplete passes and Taylor

Prentice booted a 37 yard eld goal with9:34 left to make the score 21-10.

Swanton kicked off as the ball landedin the hands of Boysel, he was off to the

races, he broke free and sprinted 84 yards

down the eastern sideline and suddenlythe Tribe were back up 28-10.

An Axel Bueter touchdown and a Swan-

ton eld goal nished the rst half scoringand the Indians held a 35-13 advantage atthe break.

It took the Indians offense three plays

on their rst possession of the third quar-ter to put six more point on the board.

Suntken found Boysel, who covered muchof the distance on foot, with a 55-yard

touchdown pass with just 54 ticks of theclock gone. Whitcomb's extra point at-

tempt missed and the Indians grew theirlead to 41-13.

    Swanton responded with a 13 play, 70

yard drive for their 19th point with a 16-yard pass from McComb to Robbie Gils-

dorf. The Bulldogs tried a two-point con-version but Nyler was stopped short of the

endzone. With Wauseon taking possession at it's

own 35-yard line. Axel Bueter ran through

a huge whole behind his offensive lineand raced 65 yards untouched to paydirt.

Whitcomb split the uprights and the leadwas 48-19 with 4:45 left.

After running and passing for 75 yardson their next trip down the eld, the Bull-

dogs drive stalled on a fourth and goal at

the Wauseon four yard line. Defenders in-cluding Alec Vonier, Aaron Schuette, and

Danny Hench helped thwart the drive. The ball went back to the potent

Wauseon offense and they did not disap-point. Behind tremendous line blocking

from Noah Castle, Ceasar Juarez, Josh

Kauffman, Anthony Werder, Alec Vonierand Caleb Andrews the Indians collected

the 96 needed yards on just ve snaps toreach the Swanton endzone again. This

time it was Ty Suntken running for 66 of

the yards on two carries as the secondrun, a 23 yarder, gave the Indians a score

with 10:05 remaining in the nal quarter. The Indians nal touchdown of the

night came when the starters were re-placed by second teamers who took over

where their team mates left off covered 63

yards in eight plays with Jeremiah Kauff-man scoring his rst varsity touchdown on

    a 10 yard run.Unofcially, the Bulldogs ran 78 offen-

sive plays to the Indians 37. Wauseon had436 total yards. They accumulated 323

yards on the ground and 116 through the

    air.Suntken, unofcially had 127 yards

on just six carries. Bueter was also overthe century mark with 107 yards on nine

carries. Suntken was six of seven passingand Boysel caught two passes for 55 yards

while Castle caught two for 43 yards.

The Indians are back in action Fridaywhen they host the Delta Panthers in an

NWOAL neighborhood rivalry. Game timein set for 7 p.m.

Hicksville Aces Scoring BarrageGrounds The Edon Bombers, 53-33

    By: Kent HutchisonTHE VILLAGE REPORTER

HICKSVILLE- Friday the 13th, a dateconsidered to be bad luck by many

ended up that way for the Edon Blue

Bombers in their contest with the hostHicksville Aces. Early in the game it

appeared the day was going to be one of

good fortune for the Bombers. Edonfound paydirt their first two possession

and built a 13-0 lead with 5:34 remain-

ing in the first quarter. However, fromthat point on Hicksville scored 26 unan-

swered points and found the end zone in8 of their next 10 possessions en route to

a 53-33 win over the Bombers.

Edon received the opening kickoffand in nine plays and 2:50 covered the

62 yards needed for a touchdown. TheBombers used a combination of runningand passing plays to move the ball. It

    appeared the opportunity was slipping

away from Edon when Kaden Sappspass attempt to Landon Bloir was just

out of reach. However, a personal foul

on the Aces gave the Bombers a firstdown at the Hicksville 16 yard line.

Sapp hit Conner Hug for an 11 yard

gain. The drive was capped off by a 5yard scamper through the heart of the

Aces defense by Sapp. Mike Peeples

added the point after touchdown puttingEdon on top 7-0.

    Hicksville appeared poised to counter

the Bomber score with one of their ownas they picked up a quick first down.

    However, that premise changed quickly

when a pitch fell to the turf and waspounced upon by Tyler Seaman.

The Bombers went back to work justshort of midfield. Sapp targeted Hug

again on first down, but the pass missed

the target. Trevor Green picked up 8yards on the ground, then Sapp called

his own number to pick up the first

down. Two successive running playsresulted in a loss and then a holding

penalty. Faced with second and 33,

Sapp found Hug again for an 11 yardgain. He then tossed the pigskin up for

in grabs. Brock Thiel showed off his ver-

tical climbing up over a Hicksvilledefender for a 32 yard pick up. The

Bombers covered the final 20 yards for

another score when Sapp hit Bloir.Peeples kick was unsuccessful, however

Edon now held a 13-0 advantage withover five minutes remaining in the open-ing quarter.

On the next two possessions the two

teams exchanged punts. From thatpoint on the Aces played their trump

cards on the Bombers. Hicksville movedthe ball 35 yards in nine plays, eight of

them rushing attempts, to cut the deficit

to 13-6.Following a 26 yard return by Hug,

Edon was back to work at their 42 yard

line. Green and Sapp gained one yardeach on the ground, then Sapp hit Hug

again for 13 yards. Sapp took to the

ground for 15, then 6 yards. The juniorsignal caller then hit Green for four more

yards and another first down at the

Hicksville 20 yard line. Green poundedthe line for three additional yards, but

Sapp was sacked for a 2 yard loss. Hugwas targeted again by Sapp for a gain of

eight. Facing fourth and two from the

Aces 12 yard line, the Bombers tried tohurry to the line to catch Hicksville off

guard. That strategy failed miserablywhen the exchange from center fell tothe ground ending the threat and turn-

ing the ball back over to the Aces on

downs. Each team punted the ball again,

then Hicksville took back over at their

    41. The Aces used several aerials tomove the ball. When Sapp intercepted a

pass just short of the goal line it appeared

the threat had be thwarted. However, ayellow hankie indicated holding againstthe Bombers. Shortly thereafter theAces completed a pass for a touchdownand the score was knotted 13-13 at half-time.

It was evident that the score at theend of the half caused a huge momen-tum swing. The Aces needed just two

runs by Kaleb Johns to cover 73 yardsand put Hicksville up 20-13.

On the ensuing possession by theBombers, a Sapp aerial was interceptedby the Aces Jonny Geisige. Hicksvillescored six plays later for their 26th unan-swered points of the night to go up 26-13with 7:30 remaining in the third quarter.

Following a squib kick, Edon startedwith the ball resting on their 42 yardline. Sapp gained six yards on theground only to have the play negated bya holding call. The quarterback thencompleted two successive passes; first toHug for 10 yards, then to Bloir for 19more. Sapp ran for one yard beforemissing Hug on a pass attempt. Thejunior didnt miss his next toss hittingPeeples for a 34 yard score to narrow the

margin to 26-19 as the kick by Peepleswas blocked.

Hicksville scored on their next twopossessions to up the advantage to40-19 as the fourth quarter began.

Edon continued to battle. Beginningat their 43 yard line, Sapp kept the ballfor 16 yards on the ground, then tossedone up down the north sideline that Hugsnatched from two Hicksville defendersfor a 35 yard gain. With the ball restingat the Hicksville six, Sapp found Bloir fortheir second scoring connection. After

Peeples nailed the kick Edon trailed40-26.

Another onside kick attempt by theBomber resulted in excellent field pos-session for the Aces. Starting at theEdon 49 yard line, Hicksville needed justthree plays and 1:30 to score once again. This time Geisige hit Zack Yoder for a 48yard score making the score 47-26 infavor of the home team.

There was still plenty of fight left inthe Bomber offense. Starting at their 43yard line, Sapp tossed a screen in the leftflat and Green darted 22 yards. Sapp hithis favorite target Hug for a 13 yard gainleaving Edon with a first and 10 at theAces 22 yard line. A short completion toPeeples resulted in no gain, and then thenext attempt in Hugs direction was

tipped and almost intercepted. Facing3rd and 10, Sapp called his own numberfor just enough for a first down. The duoof Sapp to Hug gained the final 12 yardsto trim the lead down to 47-33 with 7:46

    remaining in the contest.

Unfortunately that was the final time

the Bombers crossed the goal line.

    Hicksville added another touchdown to

provide the final score of 53-33.

    Although it wasnt another record

setting performance, Sapp had a respect-

able night through the air. He complet-

ed 20 of 31 pass for 294 yards, 4 touch-downs and 2 interceptions. Just three

weeks into the season the junior com-

    pleted 47-74 attempts, has amassed

1059 passing yards and thrown 13 TD

    passes.

Hug led the receiving corps with 10

catches for 114 yards and a score, while

Bloir hauled in 3 aerials for 45 yards and

2 touchdowns. Peeples secured 2 tosses

for 47 yards and one TD, with Thiel

snatching a pair of throws for 26 yards.

Sapp also led the Bombers on the

ground rushing for 47 yards in 20

    attempts and one touchdown. Green

had 6 carries for 14 yards.

The loss drops Edon to 2-1 on the

season. The Bombers will open league

play next as they travel to Northwood to

battle the always powerful and defending

    TAAC Champion Rangers.

Hilltop Cadets Offensive & Defensive Salvos Shred The Holgate Tigers

    By: Timothy Kays

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

HOLGATE - Week one, it was a lack of

offense. Week two, the offense was comingto life, but the defense was going on lifesupport. Week three on September 13 sawthe Hilltop Cadets searching for win #1 onthe season, and with it the ability to bringdefensive and offensive pressure to bear inthe same game. Unfortunately for the

Holgate Tigers, the Cadets found the com-bination, rattling off 32 unanswered pointsen route to a 32-12 win that was a biggerblowout than the 20-point margin indi-cated. In the early going however, it lookedlike the Tigers were going to have a fieldday.

On their first possession, Holgatebegan moving the ball downfield. Facing afourth and six, the Tiger quarterback

dropped back to pass and was immedi-ately pressured. Switching to Plan-B, hescrambled to his left only to find Cayden

Blaisdell and Chad Champion closing rap-idly. Turning to Plan-C, he slammed onthe brakes and scrambled to his right withBlaisdell and Champion in pursuit. In des-peration, he heaved the ball down theright sidelines and found a receiver thatwas shadowing his scramble. Having left

his defender in the dust, the pass wascompleted for a big gain inside the Hilltop25. On the next play the tight end was leftuncovered for another huge gain down tothe three. It was there that the Cadetdefense regained consciousness. A firstdown run gained nothing. A second down

pass to the right of the endzone wascaught, but hauled in out of bounds. Thethird down play saw Jalen Towers busting

through the line to force an errant pass, and a quarterback draw on fourth downwas stuffed at the line of scrimmage...theCadet defense held. They did not have

much time to celebrate the achievement, though.

Taking over at their own three, thefirst down play by Austin Batt brought theball out to the five. Quarterback QuinnSmith then tried the right side, only to be

buried by six Tigers for little gain. On thirdand six, Smith handed the ball off to MikloAbner, and the Tigers were waiting, In themidst of the scrum, the ball came looseand Holgate recovered at the five. Therecently tested Cadet defense would haveto prove that their first stand was no fluke.

On first down, the Tigers went for apass to the left of the endzone. The ballwas caught, but like the previous drive,

the receiver was out of bounds. A seconddown pass play was blown up when JoeShilling came on a blitz and forced ascramble. This time there was no Plan-B

as Champion joined Shilling in burying

the quarterback for a sack and a loss of

ten. Third down saw the Tigers misfire ona pass over the middle, and a fourth and

goal short pass was blown up by Blaisdellat the twelve...the defense held, again. Two

trips inside the Hilltop ten, and Holgatehad bupkes. The Cadet Cadre however

had the ball, as well as something that

they had gone without up to this point inthe season...confidence. That confidence

grew over the next three quarters to apoint that it was so real, it should have

been charged admission. On first down, Smith found Mikel

Burlew on the left side for a gain of 19. The

same combination connected on the fol-lowing play, taking the ball out to the

Hilltop 43. The drive died there though, and Hilltop punted the ball away. Holgate

was unable to connect on first down, anda contingent of Blaisdell, Dave Smith and

others to the quarterback for a six-yard

sack on second down. On third down,Dave Smith came on a corner blitz, and

with Logan Brooker and Jesse Westfallclosing in for support, tacked on another

big loss via the sack. Facing a fourth and

forever on their own 29, Holgate elected topunt the ball, but a horrendous snap

resulted in a loose ball that the Tigerswere able to recover at their two. The

Cadets took over with a first and goal asthe first period came to a close.

The successes of the defense had yet to

translate to the offense for Hilltop, andprior to the snap, their first and goal from

the two became a first and goal from theseven following a false start call. A first

down pass to Batt in the endzone was welldefended, and both Batt and Quinn Smith

remained on the turf following the play. With key contributors like Will McKinney,Luke Wagner and Justin Grapengeter

already in civvies on the sideline, injuriesto key players like Batt and Smith would

be devastating. Both were helped off thefield, and Burlew was under center when

a second down end around handoff to

Champion was blown up in the backfieldfor a loss back to the 14. Smith came back

on for the third and goal pass play thatwas broken up just outside the goal line.

Facing fourth down, the call was madefrom the sideline, Field goal. On came

the field goal unit, along with Justin

Ashenfelter who was seeing his first actionof the year after suffering a broken neck

during the preseason. When his kick wentthrough the uprights at the 10:58 mark,

the Cadets had two things...the first points

of the night, and their first lead of the2013 season, 3-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Abner puncheda squibber to the right side. The Tigers

appeared stunned, and barely made a play

on the ball while a sea of running red wasin hot pursuit. Hilltop recovered the ball at

the Holgate 42. The Cadet drive died at the36, where Holgate again took over. Towers

busted up a pass play on first down.

Blaisdell and Brooker broke free on sec-ond down, forcing a scramble that Dave

Smith ended in a five-yard loss. On thirddown, the quarterback was again trapped

behind the line, where he fumbled the ballaway and Hilltop took over at the 27.

Abner went over right guard for nine,

and Quinn Smith carried to the 13. Thedrive died there, and Ashenfelters field

goal attempt from the left hash mark waswide right. The Tigers dodged a bullet, but

would soon shoot themselves in the foot.Taking over at their 20, the Tigers

picked up a pair of first downs to move the

ball to their 42. Once there though, a passover the middle was picked off by

Champion, who returned the ball to theHolgate 31. A pitch right to Abner netted

nothing on first down, and Batt was driven

back on second down for a loss of a yard.On third and 11 a pass to the right fell

incomplete. Facing a fourth and 11 fromthe 32, the Cadets called for a time out to

discuss strategy. That time out was time

well spent as Hilltop opted to go for brokeon the fourth down play.

Quinn Smith dropped straight backand hit Champion with a short pass to the

left. With blockers sealing off the line,Champion turned the corner and hit the

gas down the left sideline for a 32-yardtouchdown with 1:53 left in the half.

Ashenfelters PAT boot was good, and the

half ended with the Cadets still pitching ashutout at 10-0.

The second half would see the game gofrom close to blowout status. Hilltop Head

Coach Paul Kyser said prior to the start ofthe third period, Hopefully we can get

some kind of running game established...

that would help a lot. Weve had a couplehigh moments and a couple good plays,

but overall we are not moving the ball verywell offensively. That running game would

make an appearance, and Holgate strug-gled to stop it when they needed to.

The Tigers went four and out to start

the half, and the Cadets began to drive theball downfield. A third and 15 pass from

the 20 bounced off the hands of Brookerand right into the awaiting arms of a

Holgate defender at the Tigers seven. TheHilltop drive was short-circuited, but only

temporarily. On first down, the quarter-

back dropped back to pass, but hadChampion all over him before he could

scramble. Champion buried him in theendzone for a safety that gave Hilltop a

12-0 lead with 8:50 left in the third. The Tigers tried a squib on the free

kick, but Hilltop recovered on the Holgate44 with 8:41 left in the period. On the first

play, Quinn Smith turned and handed the

ball to Abner. Going behind Towers at cen-ter, Abner hit the line, carried a pair of

Tigers, and then shook both off on a44-yard run to the endzone. The

Ashenfelter kick made it 18-0, and theanimation in the Cadet ranks was both

    visible and audible.

Both teams then went three and out,but thanks to a pass interference call,

Holgate was able to get out of the shadowsof their own goal posts on their ensuing

possession. The Tigers picked up anotherfirst down, but the drive ended when

Champion blew up an inside handoff, forc-

ing and then recovering a fumble.Quinn Smith hit Champion for a five

yard gain to start the drive, then Abnermoved the chains with a run to the 24. On

the next play, it was the big diesel again as

Abner took the handoff and ran it up themiddle for a 24-yard score with 1:20 left in

the third. The PAT kick was blocked, butthe Cadets took a 25-0 lead into the

    fourth.

The Cadets were already moving theball at the start of the fourth period when

Champion took the handoff and busted offa 40-yard touchdown run. The Ashenfelter

kick made it a 32-0 game. Holgate wasable to get a pair of scores later against the

Cadet second stringers, but only enoughto blunt the blowout.

Quinn Smith was 6 of 21 through the

air for 75 yards, a score and a pick, andran the ball 10 times for 13 yards. Abner

ran the ball 11 times for 103 yards and 2touchdowns. Champion ran 4 times for 37

yards and a score, catching a pair for 37yards and another score. Westfall ran once

for 2 yards, and Batt had a yard on 3 tries.

Burlew hauled in 2 passes for 30 yards, and Zack VanDyke grabbed a pass for 22

    yards.The defense played undoubtedly their

Montpelier Locos Never Get Out Of TheDepot Against The Patriots Of Patrick Henry

    By: Storm Humbert

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    The Montpelier Locomotives took the

field on September 13 looking to bounce

back on their home turf after a devas-

tating loss the week prior at Liberty

    Center. Their opponents, the Patrick

Henry Patriots, were no pushovers how-

ever and the night didnt go quite as

planned for the home team Locos.

The night didnt start out great for

the home team as the Locomotives first

    offensive possession ended with an

    interception and Patrick Henry taking

over on their side of the field. However,

in what wound up being one of the few

Patriot mistakes of the night, the visi-

tors gave the ball right back to the

Locos with a fumble on their first play

from scrimmage. After this quick back and fort of pos-

sessions however, it quickly shaped up

to be a long night for the home team

    Locomotives. After regaining posses-

sion, Montpelier went for a quick three

and out culminating in a punt. The vis-

iting Patriots then took over and moved

quickly down the field for the first score

    of the evening.

It got worse fast for the Locos. They

went another three and out on their

next possession and this was quickly

capitalized upon by Patrick Henry as

the Patriots scored on their first play

from scrimmage on the ensuing posses-

    sion.

    The next Montpelier possession was

a three and out of a different variety in

that the first two plays went for little or

no gain and the third was picked off by

the Patriots around midfield. Two plays

later, the visiting team was in the end

    zone again.

The Locos next possession was much

the same except that this time the inter-

ception occurred on the first play from

scrimmage and was accompanied by a

    charge of offensive pass interference.

The Patriots quickly took the ball down

for another score to make it 28-0 before

the end of the first quarter.

    Montpeliers next possession got a

little traction and the Locos moved the

chains once, but the drive ended in

another punt. The next Patrick Henry

possession ended up moving more slow-

ly than the previous ones, but just aseffectively as the Patriots posted yet

    another score.

The next Montpelier drive was anoth-

er three and out and ended in yet

another punt attempt. This one was just

an attempt because the snap sailed over

the punters head and he was swarmed

by Patriots resulting in a large loss of

yardage and a turnover on downs.

At this point, however, the Montpelier

defense rallied and made some big

plays. They stuffed a couple of Patrick

Henry runs and knocked down some

passes. Then, the Patriots lost five yards

on a false start call which brought up

fourth down and six. The Locos made

an impressive stand and didnt give up

the first. This turnover on downs gave

the ball back to the Locomotives with

one last drive attempt before the half.

And what an attempt it was. On the

second play of the drive, Alex Zuver

hauled in a long pass from KeeganHitzeman and ran with it until being

stopped by a Patrick Henry defensive

back close to the Patriots red zone. In

total, the play netted the home team 70

yards. The drive, however, was not to be

as the Locomotives quickly found them-

selves facing a long fourth down after a

few incomplete passes. The drive ended

in a turnover on downs and the Patriots

ran out the first half clock and went to

the locker room with the score 35-0.

The second half was much of the

same for the Locomotives, though quar-

terback Keegan Hitzeman did find the

end zone on a nine yard run in the third

quarter. The game ended with the score

49-7 and the Locos looking again to

next week and next season for retribu-

    tion.On the night, quarterback Keegan

Hitzeman was two of eight in the pass-

ing game for a total of 90 yards with

    three interceptions. Also, the Montpelier

stable of running backs managed 46

rushing yards on 42 attempts with on

    touchdown coming from Hitzeman. The

two receptions on the night went to Alex

Zuver for 70 yards and Cody Caudill for

    20. In terms of defense, Alex Zuver

grabbed the highlight of the night on

that side of the ball as well with

    Montpeliers only interception.

The Locomotives wil l now focus their

attention on the upcoming game against

Swanton so head over next week and

watch Montpelier face off against the

Bulldogs, it promises to be a good game.

CONTINUATION OF VARSITY BOYS CROSS COUNTRY ACTION

    By: Storm Humbert

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

With school starting up, summer baseball has allbut drawn to a close. However, there are some whorefuse to stop playing and there are plenty of organiza-tions happy to help them keep playing provided they

make the team, of course. One of these die-hards is Nic Schieber, a sophomoreat West Unity. Nic has played baseball since he wasfour years old according to his mother. It is his favoritesport, and he loves to both watch and play. His favoriteteam is the Detroit Tigers and his favorite players areMiguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander, and C.C. Sabathia.

While Nic is currently getting his reps in with theNapoleon River Bandits in his Fall league, he has

recently accepted a position in a farmore exclusive program Coast toCoast Athletics. In order to makethis team, Nic attended two try-outs, one in Bowling Green, andone in St. Louis. These tryouts wereheld in 35 states and the program

usually sees between 1,700 and2,000 participants. Of all

    of these players, only 15

make the team, thats less thanone percent, and, this year, Nicfound himself in

that one percent. This is especially impressive because Nic is one of

the youngest in his age group (15-18), and he made itas a pitcher. Making the team presents Nic with two in-credible opportunities. First, on December 27 throughJanuary 1, Nic will get to travel to Jupiter, Florida toattend camps and workshops as well as play a couple

games. Then, next June, he will get to travel with theCoast to Coast team to play against some foreign com-petition in Puerto Rico. The best part is, aside from thetravel opportunities, that the camps and the PuertoRico games will be full of college and professionalscouts which will allow Nic to drastically increasehis visibility and chances of playing at the next level.

Nic has denitely given some thought to playingat the college level. The schools he would love to goto are South Carolina, Michigan, and Notre Dame. You may be wondering, why these schools? Well,Nic has his reasons. He has family in South Caro-lina, so that would be comfortable for him (and whowouldnt love to spend a couple years in either of theCarolinas). He and his father have always been bigNotre Dame fans, and Michigan made the list be-cause he doesnt really like Ohio State, fair enough.

As you can see, Nic has some big dreams whenit comes to baseball and talent to go with them. He

does, however, need some help to make his Puer-to Rico dreams a reality. The trips to Florida andPuerto Rico will run about $6,700 total. Luckily, theCoast to Coast organization knows that many of itsplayers will need to raise funds to afford these trips

and theyve set up a site to collect support dollars. Ifyou would like to give Nic some support, just go towww.reachingourgoal.org, click on make a dona-tion, and type in Nics last name (Schieber). You canalso call (419) 386-7993. Remember that every littlebit helps, and if everyone gives a little, it will help Nicdo quite a lot.

    Wauseon Lady Indians and Pettisville

Lady Blackbirds saw action at the 2013

Tiffin Cross Country Carnival onSeptember 7.

In Division III, Pettisville placed 31st

ners in the field, Fayette opted for the D

Wauseon fielded full teams in both

Division II races. In the D II-A event all

five scoring runners in the top 100.

While that may not seem impressive, it

is important to remember that the Tiffin

Carnival is the largest high school cross

country event east of the Mississippi

River. The D II-A event had 207 runners

in the field beside Wauseon, and many

of these individual races had more run-

ners in the field than many of our local

villages have in total population.Taylor Vernot finished seventh over-

Indians Kick Past Irish 5-1By: Bill Bray

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

A few moves positioning moves and the

Wauseon Indians looked like a different

team in a 5-1 victory over Toledo Central

Catholic Saturday.Marin Schaffner, moved from mideld

to forward, resulted in the senior scoring

four of the Wauseon goals. Her rst at the

35:44 of the rst half was a center shot

right in the middle of the goal and past

    the keeper.

It was Schaffner again at the 29:30,

with an assist from Stephanie Whitman,

from the right side of the goal. Her strong

kick slipped past the keeper again for a

    2-0 Indians lead.

Katee Roberts got into the scoring col-

umn when the senior wing slapped in a

shot she rebounded at the 21:39.

Play continued down to 1:35 when

Schaffner found the net for the third time

in the half as the keeper was pulled out of

goal and she slid around her for an easy

    look and score.

Toledo Central Catholic was able to an-

swer that goal with 1:11 left to close the

Indians lead to 4-1 at the break.

Schaffner sealed the deal with goal

number four with 5:07 remaining in the

contest to nish the scoring and move the

Indians to a 5-3 record on the season.

We made a couple switches to

our normal line-up and I really like the

result, a happy coach Kelsey Newman

said. We had so many people involved

offensively and we showed more con-

dence today in 1v1 situations due to some

really good practices we had throughout

the week. We moved Ashley Smith from

mideld to defense, and shes been very

strong for us there. We also moved Marin

Schaffner from mideld to forward, and

she obviously had a great game playing

there with 4 goals. We have two tough

games this coming week, well need to

keep the same composure we showed in

    our game today.

resenting the NWOAL and the BBC sent

their junior high cross country girls to

Archbold on September 7 for the 2013

Archbold Invitational. Only one of the

    schools, Pettisville, had enough runners

in the field to compete for team points.

As the competition was quick to find

out, the lack of teammates did not put

a damper on the remaining runners.

    Elizabeth Sauder and Kamryn

    Hostetler of the Pettisville Lady

Blackbirds were serving up the maincourse at the Dust Diner. Sauder fin-

ished in first place overall, with Hostetler

Tiffin Carnival Hosts Fayette & Wauseon GirlsTIFFIN - One would think that being

such a small fish in an immense ocean

would be a point of intimidation for

junior high school girls. If that was the

case, four ladies from Fayette and

Wauseon did not let it show at the 2013

    Tiffin Carnival on September 7.

The Tiffin Carnival is the largest

cross country event of its kind in the

Eastern United States, with races that

can pack the equivalent of the popula-

tion of a small village on the course.

That being the case, the response from

the local ladies could be summed up in

    two words...no fear.

Tressa Taylor, the sole Fayette Lady

Eagle, placed 153rd in the D III-Varsityevent, but the big impact came later

during the open event. 356 runners

took to the field, and Mya Suarez of

Wauseon crossed the line in ninth place

overall. Anna Koenig finished in 134th,

and Mya Nikol Riley came in 310th.

Pettisville Jr. High Tramples Trinity LutheranPETTISVILLE - After a long break for

the Fulton County Fair, the Pettisville

    Blackbirds Junior High soccer team

returned to the pitch on September 9 to

square off against a visiting Trinity

Lutheran squad that was hoping that

the layoff might have left their hosts a

    little rusty.

As it turned out, the only hope the

visitors wound up having was the hope

that the clock would hurry up and run

out. The Birds lit up the nets for seven

first half goals and ended up with a

    10-1 blowout victory.

    Peyton Miller, Justin Rupp and

Theary Eash each scored their first

goals of the season, while other tallies

were recorded by Detric Yoder, Conner

Wyse, Landon Roth and Eli Greiser.

Assists were issued to Yoder, Wyse,

Roth, Greiser, Elias Rash and Garrett

    Young.

Pettisville Rallies Past Lenawee ChristianPETTISVILLE - The evening of

September 10 brought the junior high

    kickers of Lenawee Christian to

    Pettisville. Lenawee generally fields a

strong team and this year was no excep-

tion, but the Battling Birds proved that

they are stacked to the beaks with tal-

ent as well, coming away with a 6-3 win.

Early in the first half the Blackbirds

found themselves down 0-2 following apenalty kick goal and a breakaway shot

which was lined past a diving Justin

Rupp. Trailing for the first time this

year, the home team patiently battled

their way back into the game.

Kamryn Hostetler scored on a nice

volley off a cross from Eli Greiser.

Hostetler then pushed a pass to Landon

Roth who beat the netminder to tie the

game. Lenawee scored on a second

penalty of the period however, and

entered halftime with a 3-2 lead.

    An energized Pettisville team entered

the second half and quickly took charge.

Detric Yoder scored an unassisted goal,

and several minutes later the Birds

were awarded a penalty kick which

Roth pounded in to the left of the net-

minder, and the Birds recaptured a leadthat they would never surrender. Yoder

tacked on another two goals and the

    defense stayed strong, blanking the

potent Lenawee squad while the offense

    racked up four unanswered goals.

The Blackbirds will place their 4-0

record on the line on September 13

when they travel to meet Monclova
