Firstly I wanted to officially farewell our Year 12 students and their families. It has been a pleasure to have you all as part of our school community and I would like to thank you for your continued support and contribution to the school. The good news is the HSC journey is almost at an end, except for one more little thing… the HSC itself. I also wanted to send a final message to our Year 12 students and that is simply to know that each of you have put in the energy and have developed the skills to succeed, now put all that you know into practice and walk into each exam with the confidence and belief in your own ability. I want our graduating class of 2015 to be the best they can be and know that each of you has the capacity to achieve anything you put your mind to. I would like to wish you every success for the future and I am so pleased you had selected St George Girls High School to be your school of choice for the past six years. Year 12 Graduation On Friday 18 September we are conducting our Year 12 Graduation Ceremony, which includes a special assembly and afternoon tea for Year 12 students, their parents and the staff. This event will commence at 12 noon which will necessitate an early finish to the day for students in Years 7 to 11 (excluding those Year 11 students who are assisting at the function) at 11:50am (at the end of Period 4). This early finish will allow all teaching staff to be present at this important event. If you wish your daughter to remain at school on this day until the normal finishing time, teacher supervision will be provided. A letter has been sent home to all students outlining the details for this day, including an attachment to be completed if you wish your daughter to remain at school until 3:07pm. I also wanted to inform parents that the canteen will not be operating at all on this day. OnSTAGE Nominations Last week I received the welcome news that 8 students have been nominated to perform at OnSTAGE (2 Individual Performances and 1 Group Performance) which is a selection of performances and projects from HSC Drama students across NSW. This is a very prestigious honour and a real testament to the quality performances presented to the HSC Markers. I would like to congratulate the following students for this success; Madison Jackson (IP) “Goneril” From King Lear. Mabel Li (IP) “Inner Baby”. Florence Cheng, Bronte Noakes, Madison Jackson, Niki Kalimnios, Mabel Li and Amy Tong for their outstanding Group Performance “We are all Individuals”. A huge vote of thanks must also go to their teacher Ms Wright for guiding and harnessing the creative energy and talents of this group of students. I look forward to hearing and sharing more good news over the coming weeks.

SScchhooooll FFeennccee UUppddaattee I am pleased to announce that we have been successful in our application for the 50/50 Joint Funding Grant from the Department of Education (DoE) to construct a security perimeter fence around the campus. I am so pleased that we will now be able to provide the much needed security and protection to the staff and students within the school. The school will need to fund half of this joint venture and I am hoping that parents may like to consider making a donation to the tax deductible School Building Fund over the coming months, as all donations made by parents will be directed to the funding of this project.

TTeellll TThheemm FFrroomm MMee SSuurrvveeyy ffoorr PPaarreennttss You are invited to participate in the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey designed for parents and carers. This survey complements the TTFM student and teacher surveys, which focus on student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices. Earlier this year the students had the opportunity to complete this survey and we have incorporated some of the key issues and findings into the current school plan. I would now like to seek parental input and if you have yet to complete the survey I strongly encourage you as parents and carers to take a minute to complete the survey.

WWhhyy SShhoouulldd II PPaarrttiicciippaattee?? Parents and carers are an important and valued part of our school community and our school will draw on this input and feedback to make practical improvements and inform school planning and directions.

WWhhaatt DDooeess IItt IInnvvoollvvee?? This online survey takes about 15 minutes to complete. It is anonymous and voluntary. If you have more than one child at this school, and feel that your children's experiences differ, you can complete the survey more than once.

You can access the survey in your own time, between 17 August and 16 October 2015. A link for the survey has been emailed to parents and if you are experiencing any difficulties with this link, please contact our Deputy Principal Ms Abson.

PPrreeffeecctt IInndduuccttiioonn CCeerreemmoonnyy On Tuesday 15 September we will induct into office the newly elected prefect body for 2016 at a special Prefect Induction Ceremony. To be nominated and elected by your peers into such a prestigious office is a real honour and testament to the leadership skills and qualities that the students have. I would like to introduce and congratulate our Prefect body for 2016 and I am looking forward to formally inducting them at our assembly in the presence of their parents/carers and the school community.

CCllaassssiiccss TToouurr During the holidays Mr Morrison and eight students from Years 10 and 11 together with students from Sydney Girls High School will be visiting Italy and the UK as part of the Combined Schools Classics Study Tour. The planning for the tour has taken more than nine months, and the students are all very excited about their imminent departure. During the tour students will visit a range of wonderful places including a full day at the archaeological site of Pompeii, the ancient sites of Rome herself, including the Roman forum and Colosseum, the ruins of Bath in England, a visit to Mill Hill School, London, and the British Museum, home to the largest collection of classical artefacts in the world. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to personally experience the culture, history and language which they have learnt about in class, and to engage with their learning in a deep and rich way. I would like to thank Mr Morrison for the huge amount of time and energy he has invested to make this opportunity possible for our students and for attending the tour alongside the students. I wish the students all the best for the tour and I look forward to hearing about their adventures when they return home safely next term.

FFaarreewweellll,, WWeellccoommee aanndd TThhaannkk YYoouu At the end of this term Mr Ted Scott officially leaves our school to start a new chapter in his career at SCECGS Redlands. On behalf of our school community I would like to thank Mr Scott for his dedication and commitment to the students in each of his classes for the past five years. Mr Scott is an exceptional Social Science teacher with particular expertise in Economics and Geography. He has also been a valued member of the wellbeing team having also so ably stepped up into Year Adviser roles during his time at our school. Mr Scott has involved himself outside of the classroom, leading the Da Vinci Decathlon for the past four years. I know that he will enjoy his new challenge and we wish him all the success he deserves as he transitions into his new school community. His new school is certainly lucky to have acquired such a quality educational practitioner.

At the start of next term, we officially welcome our new Head Teacher Administration and PDHPE Ms Amber Housego into our school community. I know she is very keen and excited to start in her new role and we are looking forward to having her join our school community and be part of our executive team.

Ms Sue Thodey officially ends her temporary employment contract at the end of this term. I wanted to say a very big thank you to Ms Thodey for the significant contribution she has made to our school and for the endless hours she has invested organising the quality and varied PDHPE lessons, sporting activities, events and competitions for all of our students to enjoy and participate in. I know Ms Thodey will continue to have a connection to St George and we look forward to having her back in a range of capacities in the future. I wanted to also say a very sincere thank you to Mr Gordon Moncrieff for the dedication and professionalism he has continually displayed during his time as Relieving Head Teacher Administration.

The organisation of the school day is a very important role and Mr Moncrieff has ensured that the school has functioned smoothly each and every day. He is calm under pressure and has executed his duties with dignity and professionalism.

SSttuuddeenntt AAcchhiieevveemmeennttss Our Year 12 students showcased their HSC Body of Works (BOWs) at the Visual Arts exhibition held on Wednesday 26 August. It was so great to see so many parents and community members attend to celebrate and view the quality work on display. It was great to see our local paper ‘The Leader’ feature an article last Thursday 3 September (included in the ‘St George Girls Make News’ Section) on one of the impressive BOWs created by our Year 12 student Sidney Tulau. I have also been closely watching the progress of our Year 9 debating team who successfully triumphed through to the Regional Semi Finals of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. This team comprising of Eloise Cooper, Laetitia Carlile-Purcarea, Emily Kasovska, Sophie Lymn and Brenda Tan has defeated Year 10 debating teams from Blakehurst High School, Cronulla High School, Newtown High School of the Performing Arts and Sydney Secondary College Balmain Campus. Mr Simmons has been the coach in charge of this extraordinary group of debaters and has described them as “nothing short of extraordinary in their achievements, not only in their victories but in the grace, humility and dignity with which they have won”. The girls were narrowly defeated by the Year 10 team from Sydney Boys High School, with the adjudicator admitting that he had to “think very hard about which team had the better argument on the day”. Our debaters have typified all that is so exceptional about our school – intelligence, the capacity for empathy and support and, above all, enthusiasm for learning according to Mr Simmons. I am very proud of the girls and I would also like to acknowledge the commitment and guidance provided by Mr Simmons to this group of Year 9 students, I know they have certainly appreciated having his support and encouragement. I have also received the wonderful news that Erica Li in Year 9 attended the Australian Synchronised Swimming Commonwealth Festival in Perth last week. This is a wonderful opportunity and achievement and I am so lucky to be leading a school that can celebrate student achievements each month in such a variety of areas. I am always keen to hear about the achievements of our students and I welcome any correspondence from parents or the community about any such achievement. Well done to all who have experienced personal success this term. Finally I would like to wish our school community a very safe and restful end of term break. I look forward to doing it all again in Term 4, which commences on Tuesday 6 October for both staff and students. Betty Romeo Principal

he YMCA NSW Youth Parliament is a wonderful program which empowers young people from Years 10 – 12 from both rural and metropolitan

NSW to be advocates for their communities. This year, the program attracted over 250 applications and a record 160 were chosen to become Youth Parliamentarians. Of these 160, Rachael Lee, Janis Wu and myself (Carolyn Tran), were selected to participate in this prestigious program and become Youth members of the Legislative Council (NSW upper house). We attended two camps. The first being in Vision Valley in the April school holidays to meet fellow Parliamentarians and develop our speaking skills and refine our parliamentary knowledge in preparation for the Residential camp in the July school holidays. The Residential camp was undoubtedly the highlight of the program, and involved a four day sitting week in the NSW Parliament House in front of current MPs who chaired out debates. We even had the chance to meet renowned politicians and Australians such as Rosie Batty (Australian of the Year 2015), Bob Carr (former NSW Premier), Anna Bligh (former QLD Premier) and Dame Quentin Bryce (former Governor General). As well, His Excellency Peter Cosgrove, current Governor of NSW, hosted us for a wonderful afternoon tea reception in his palace that is nestled between the Sydney Conservatorium and the Botanical Gardens.

Youth Parliament has been a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded youth and develop lasting friendships, engage in rigorous but always respectful debate on a range of issues including medicinal cannabis legalisation, domestic violence and rural health. I must also take this opportunity to thank St George Girls, particularly, the Dragon Aid charity for sponsoring us to attend the program. I encourage everyone from Years 7 – 12 (there is another program called Junior Parliament for those in Years 7 – 9) to consider participating in this fantastic program, because it really does change everything!

performance on Monday 7 September and a visual arts exhibition. Ms Romeo also received and approved 40 applications for the School and Community Service Awards. These Awards are funded annually by the Mothers Committee and will be presented on Friday, 18 September at Graduation Day. Excellent and Outstanding Award categories are awarded, with each recipient receiving a $20 or $30 voucher respectively. Our thanks go to Ms Romeo. Also thanks to our guest speaker Ms Wright – Head Teacher of Creative and Performing Arts. Ms Wright shared with us research that shows Arts are key to unlocking potential. Dancing, singing, acting, playing music and making art – all these activities greatly benefit a child’s academic performance and overall creativity and innovation, as well as their personal well-being. The research found that school students who studied creative and performing arts were more motivated, more likely to complete homework and participate in class and enjoyed school more than their peers who didn’t participate in the arts. These creative students also have a greater sense of purpose, self-esteem, life satisfaction and educational aspirations. Ms Wright told us that the school always has a focus on creative and performing arts and has been achieving great results in HSC in this area. Ms Wright also took us around the art exhibition and showed us a research video in the drama shed. When we visited the music rooms, Year 7’s were practicing there and gave us a surprise performance which was a delight.

We hope the room will be ready in time for this year’s Year 12 students and provide a better environment for them in preparing for their HSC studies.
