RecycleAll future editions of the Four Gazette will now be printed on recycled paper. “Why” you may ask? The reason that would spring to most people’s mind would be the saving of tropical rain forests but this is not quite true, although there has been speculation that some have been cleared in order to grow the softwoods needed for paper production. Most ‘paper’ trees are from northern forests and so the main saving from the tree “angle” would be the transportation and processing costs, including the cost of replanting felled trees. How much better is it for the environment to reuse existing paper? You do need to add some ‘trees’ to the chain as paper can only be recycled around 5 times before it loses its strength etc., but the efficient use, (or re-use), of the trees is important, not only for the transport issue but also because it uses far less energy to produce recycled pa-per and less chemicals are involved in its production. The Four Gazette uses about 110,000 sheets of paper a year. If you bear in mind that paper can be recycled around 5 times we would be saving in excess of half a million sheets of ‘virgin’ paper, (around 2750kg or 2.7tons), in the course of a 5 year period. If you then bear in mind that for each ton of paper used for recycling you save:

At least 30,000 litres of water, (6600 gallons).3000-4000 KWh of electricity, (enough to power a 3 bed house for a year).95% of air pollution.

Perhaps the main issue is that paper, when put into landfill, being biodegradable, produces methane gas as it rots. Methane is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide, (CO2), and I think that if most people accept that global warming is a reality, (even if not as bad as some may claim), then these gases have to be reduced. And so ‘The Four Gazette’ is doing its little bit.John Beales

Sew CreativeDear Friends,Do you know those embroidered kneelers we have in church? They bring a splash of colour to the pews, and if you don’t feel like kneel-ing on them, you can try sitting on them for a bit of extra comfort. I made one once. It comes as a kit with a piece of canvas and little rolls of wool in various colours, and takes ages and ages to com-plete. But it looked good when it was finished, and it’s still there, somewhere in Wattisfield church.Far more sophisticated are the Mothers Union embroidered ban-ners, locally made by church members – just take a look at those delicate stitches, the details of the flowers, the grass, the gold threads in the halo, the quality of the lettering. This makes us think of ways that people use their skills to help other people. In the early Christian Church, we read in the book of the Acts of the Apostles of two examples of this. Stephen and his team served hot meals every day for people who had no food. A woman called Dorcas carefully made nice warm coats to give to people who were so poor they could not afford to buy them. Those who knew Dorcas admired her and were inspired by her example.I read recently about a young woman in Egypt called Sabeen, who grew up in a village near El Minya, about 150 miles south of Cairo, on the River Nile. She had polio when she was three, and missed out on a normal education, her local community assuming she would never achieve anything because of her disability. However a Christian Vocational Training Centre in El Minya encouraged her parents to let her come to them for training.Although initially lacking in any self-confidence, she became one of the best students in dressmaking, as well as learning to read and write at the Centre. On graduation, she was given a small sewing machine, and started making clothes for her family. Friends and neighbours all started ordering garments from her, so she recently visited the centre, asking for a loan to buy a bigger sewing machine!

✠FROM THE RECTORY

It’s good to know that people, like those at the El Minya Training Centre, are still doing the sort of loving, caring work that changes lives, as Stephen and Dorcas did all those years ago at the dawn of the Christian church.

The smile on Sabeen’s face says it all.

RBR Twinning AssociationI believe that everybody enjoyed the recent visit, the feedback from our French guests appears to have been positive and they are asking about our next visit to them. The weekend was brief with a reception at St Botolphs school, where we were entertained by some of the schoolchildren. On Sunday the children, (French and English), went to Pleasurewood Hills and many of the adults went to Bury St Edmunds. In the evening we had a very good hog roast meal in Rickinghall Village Hall with much dancing to a jazz band.It was sad to say farewell to our guests from Tinteniac early on Monday morning but they had a long journey home which included dancing on the ferry. One of the things we learned is that we could do with some more members, so if you could be persuaded to join please have a word with any member who should be able to con-vince you of the benefits of membership.

ChristmasIn December we held a barn dance in Botesdale Village hall with Snapdragon providing the music and dance tuition. It was not well attended but was very much appreciated by all who came along. As usual the committee provided excellent refreshments. AGMThis will be on Tuesday 10th February at 7.30 in the Bowls Club. Non-members are welcome to attend as we intend it to be a fairly relaxed and social evening with a bar and some light refreshment.Peter Stanway

The charity was formed in 1998, the aims being to improve access to high quality information, prevention, education and support services to cancer patients, their families and carer’s in Suffolk. In 2004 the Cancer Campaign in Suffolk’s first major project was the John LeVay Cancer Information Centre in the north end of Ipswich Hospital. The centre offers expert advice and information on all aspects of cancer and its treatment. We have recently extended our input into the centre by employing a 2nd specialist cancer nurse and 5 complementary thera-pists who offer free treatments to cancer patients, as well as continuing to provide the centre’s running costs. We would like to involve your local community in our charity by becoming members of our community fund raising team. We would also like the support of your community groups, organizations and clubs to consider raising funds for us in their fundraising activities. To get involved call our campaign’s office 0845 602 6607 or email:[email protected] have some very exciting future plans one of which is to provide a mobile unit that will make cancer information, prevention, education and support available in your local area. Our ambitions are huge but that’s because we feel that Suffolk deserves the best so our mobile unit will be state of the art and with a professional medical team on board. We estimate the cost will be approx £1.5million (including 3 years running costs) and we hope it will offer services that Suffolk has never had available before. If you would like to know more about the Cancer Campaign in Suffolk call our campaign’s office on: tel/fax 0845 602 6607 (all calls are at a local rate call charge) or visit our website www.cancercampaigninsuffolk.co.uk. BILL’S BIRDSby Bill Cordeaux

I shall have to admit it, perhaps, I am an occasional ‘twitcher’, (though usually just an ordinary ‘bird watcher’). I wrote in my last article that you should look out for Waxwings, and there have been two areas in Suffolk where there were flocks of them for a certain period of time:Rendlesham and the large Tesco complex south of Ipswich near the A12/A14 crossover.Having stated that they are a ‘must see’ occasional Winter migrant, I just had to go and have a look at them. So, on a dry but dull day, 1st January, I explored the large shopping complex, having a look by Tesco stores, Toys-R-Us, and a nearby Pizza. I had nearly given up but thought I would just try PC World. There were two people with binoculars gazing at some bushes, and lo and behold 40 Waxwings showed up. Having parked I found the birds following their usual habit of congregating in some tall shrubs and then, a few at a time, flying down to eat some berries, before rejoining their colleagues above - remarkably tame! In very poor light but easy to pick out were their marked colouring and crest. Supermarkets do seem to attract Wax-wings. I remember a similar sighting at Asda in Norwich some years ago. When such supermarkets were built, surrounding parking areas must have been planted with attractive shrubs bearing flowers in the Summer and berries in the Winter. Many of you have remarked on the number of Tits visiting your feeding areas, especially the Long Tailed variety. If you remember, two years ago we had a Spring with torrential rains during April. Nest building and fledgling survival rate, especially Blue and Great Tits, but except-ing the Long Tailed variety which had nested in March, was very poor. Perhaps this is why you are noticing the comparative increase in the Long Tailed variety this Winter. Also, 2008 has been a particularly successful breeding year for Long Tailed Tits.Birds similar to look at, but not closely related, are Bearded Tits, (or Reedlings), which can be found in fen areas of East Anglia. These birds have been reported as being present and having bred on Red-grave Fen. On a visit to the Fen recently I heard the typical ‘twittering’ of a group of these birds. It is good to know that they are present again in this vicinity.

15

Hopefully, we are now nearing the end of a bout of cold but dry weather. However, I can report hearing the ‘drilling’ of the Greater Spotted Woodpecker on 28th December 2008 and the Song Thrush singing on the 18th December. Also, Hedge Sparrows (Dunnocks) are singing. So there are signs and sounds even now that Spring could come! The Little Egret is still seen intermittently on Botesdale’s Spring Meadows and I recently flushed one from near the river bridge that leads from the meadows to Broomhills. And, finally, what about the advertised Starling Roost Watch in early January on Redgrave Fen? Cancelled - no Starlings! I am not surprised. Anyone visiting the Fen in the late afternoon will find the air filled with tens of thousands of Rooks and Jackdaws, the biggest gathering I have ever seen. No wonder the Starlings felt unwanted and were scared off.

You may have received a digital camera for Christmas, or already have one and been practicing your photographic skills.Digital photography is not just about being able to take a reasonable photograph, although having an eye for good composition and subjects is a vital part of producing good images. A further essential skill, and one that appears to be a technical minefield, is the ability to use your computer to download and edit your images.During a recent business conference, I met someone who had been using her digital camera for 18 months. She said she loved being able to take photographs and see them on the screen at the back of the camera immediately, but found that the big disadvantage was having to delete photographs when the card was full to take more!Upon further questioning, I discovered that she didn’t realise – or know how – to download photographs to her computer so that she could save them to view anytime. She was vaguely aware she could buy more memory cards for her camera, and assumed she had to keep buying memory cards to take more photographs, subsequently changing the memory card in the camera each time she wanted to view different pictures. Her approach was similar to that of film cameras, where you buy a new film each time the one in the camera is full. This lack of knowledge may seem strange in today’s technology driven world, but there are thousands of people who are totally confused and frightened of technology, and don’t know where to begin. Most photography books and magazines assume that people already have a basic knowledge of digital photography terminology and technology, but this is not the case.To transfer the photographs you have taken from your digital camera to your computer, you need to either connect your camera to the com-puter with a lead that fits one end into the camera and the other end into the USP (the plug and play port) of your computer (this lead is in the same box as your camera arrived in). Alternatively, and far easier, is to pop into a large supermarket, computer store, or internet site and buy a “Multi Card Reader” that connects to your computer for just a few pounds. You may already have one on your PC or printer.

Picture Postby Denise Hammond-Webb

19

To see, download and save photographs from your camera, you just slot the card into the card reader. A box will appear on your computer and click on the “Open Folder to View Files”. This will enable you to view the pictures you have taken – just keep clicking on the icons that appear until you see your images. To save the images, click Control and A (shortcut for Select All), then click Copy. When the box appears, click on My Pictures, and then Make a New Folder. Name the folder so that you can identify your images and then click Copy. All your images will now be safely transferred to the folder you have made and you can delete (format) your camera’s memory card ready to take more photo-graphs.For safety, make a back up copy of your photographs on a CD by opening the folder you have made and following the same procedure from Control and A.

Hepworth & District WIThe 2009 programme was ushered in with a talk on chocolate given by Patrick Bloomfield from the Bury Chocolate shop. We learnt quite a lot about cocoa beans, chocolate and its history and about the three main types of chocolates; truffles, creams and pralines. These small chocolates were invented in Belgium at the beginning of the 20th Cen-tury and are still their largest export. It was interesting to learn that Cortez in the 16th Century took out the chilli flavouring used by the South Americans and drank it hot while today chocolate with chilli is back in fashion. We all enjoyed our tasting of chocolates despite the Christmas overload and the resolutions to give up chocolates. The February meeting is on 12th February at Hepworth Village Hall at 7.30pm when it will be a social evening and a chance to enjoy a relaxing evening playing “beetle” and taste some different offerings from members.Anyone interested in further information or transport from Barningham please contact me, Brenda Last on 221307.

WeddingCongratulations to Sandra Clarke, formerly of Church Close, on her wedding to Richard Chivers at St Mary’s Cratfield on December 6th. The reception was held at Brome Grange. Christmas BazaarMany thanks to all those who supported the Bazaar, which this year for a change was held in the church. It was well attended despite the cold weather and a total of £380 was raised. There was a festive atmosphere, with mulled wine being served, and lots of seasonal crafts on display. Here are some results of the games: Guess-the-number-of-Sweets: the number was 59 and the winner was Tere-sa Dexter. Guess-the-weight-of-the-Cake: the weight was 4lb 9oz. Many thanks to Mrs Pauline Burton for making the cake and thanks to all those who helped on the stalls and everyone who came along. Your time and money are much appreciated. Raffle winners: a list of winners is available for inspection at the Rectory. £80 was raised at the Rectory Craft and Coffee morning. Again people’s generosity is much appreciated.Christmas CarolsThe church looked beautiful with flowers, candles, oil lamps and a magnificent Christmas Tree. Thanks to all those who helped decorate. Our visiting organist was a Cambridge student from Hadleigh, Tom Morris. We hope he’ll come again!

According to my daughter, the series of events went as follows: she was returning with two of my dogs, Bonzo and Delilah, from a walk. On the drive was a cat with a mouse in its mouth. In shock, the cat dropped the mouse, who ran in one direction whilst the cat ran in the opposite direction. The dogs chased the cat, whilst daughter chased the dogs, and somewhere along the line, Delilah caught Mr Wu the lavender grey pekin cockerel. Apparently “Delilah was just holding him Mum”. An unlikely vision was conjured up of my jack Russell cradling Mr Wu in her arms like a newborn. I think more likely, Delilah, never having caught a chicken before, was so surprised that she didn’t quite know what to do with him.Mr Wu has fluffy feet and can’t run very fast at the best of times. He certainly didn’t stand much chance when pursued by a terrier on a mission. Before I go any further, I should tell you that Mr Wu is fine and that only his pride was injured. As you will know from past pieces, Mr Wu is not the most macho cockerel on the planet and once Delilah was persuaded to let him go he minced off in a flouncy kind of way across the drive. Delilah now has the chicken catching bug and would quite like to catch another one. She has established various chicken-watching posts around the house, and is virtually living on top of the sofa. I would go so far as to say she is obsessed. If she were a patient of mine I would be suggesting Vervain Bach flower remedy for her, combined with White chestnut. Vervains’ keynote is “doing something to death” whilst white chestnut is for obsessive thoughts which go round and round. If you haven’t yet discovered Bach flower remedies...do so.Widely available from health food shops, chemists, and supermarkets, they work wonders for various emotional states. Made from different plants and trees, but not in the same way herbal medicines are made, they are easy for anyone to use.Just have a read through the different indications for them and take four drops twice a day. Most people are familiar with rescue remedy, which is a combination of four Bach flower remedies and often used for shock, anxiety and difficult times.

The Village Herbalistby Hilary Holden MNIMH

33

The key thing is to use rescue remedy regularly before a stressful event like an exam, or throughout an ongoing stressful time. Sometimes people just take it once prior to the event and then find it hasn’t helped. There are lots of different Bach flower remedies for dealing with anything from bitterness and bereavement, to over-mothering. I wish there was one to boost Mr Wu’s masculinity. Francine Raymond refers to February in one of her articles, as a time when cockerels “make amorous advances to their ladies”. However, whenever Evangeline-the-giant-hen or Lavender mention this to Mr Wu, he gets one of his headaches. Bless him.Hilary Holden MNIMH is a medical herbalist and member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. She has clinics in Eye and Stanton. Queries to 01359 252278.

HINDERCLAY

It seems a long time ago now but thank you to all who supported our Christmas Bazaar. It was good to see some new faces as well as our regular friends. You will be pleased to know that the final total raised was £437.87. May we thank all those who made the Church look so beautiful for the Christmas services. Also thanks to Dulcie for all the night-lights that gave the church that special glow! It was good to see so many people at the Carol Service and on Christmas Morning. There are just a few Hinderclay 2009 Calendars left, so if you would like one do contact Kate Rose. Saturday March 7th We will be holding our Annual Gift Day, so do make a note in your diary. So next month Hinderclay residents will find an envelope in their magazine which we hope many of you will feel able to use to support us. On a personal note may I thank the people who so kindly asked after Frank when he was unwell. Our very grateful thanks to Jean and Megan Denny and Ken Smith who so kindly did our shopping when we could not get out - it was deeply appreciated. We send our very best wishes for a speedy recovery to those people in the village who are not well. There are quite a few of you suffering with this nasty ‘flu/cold bug that is going round at the moment.

WATTISFIELD

Within 6 months he re-enlisted in the 3rd Battalion Suff. Reg. (Suffolk Militia) for 4 years. This enabled him to live at home with his family while occasionally being called for exercises and training.Discharged from the Militia in 1909 and for the next four years watched his sons grow into young men.Moved family to Wattisfield. In 1911 was working as Roadman for the local Rural District Council.Secured position as farm foreman in Wattisfield and given a tied cottageIn December 1914 he and both his sons enlisted in the army following the call to arms.Robert aged 48 was posted to the 5th Batt who garrisoned the Depots in support of the fighting battalions. His previous experience was noted and he was promoted to Corporal to assist in recruitment and training. He developed a serious heart complaint in 1916 (Tachycardia) and was discharged as unfit for duty.In the meantime, Emma had been turned out of their tied cottage and was living in a barn in Wattisfield.Robert returned to her there to hear that one son had been gassed and the other seriously wounded in the face. Both sons survived but Robert died in the barn with Emma in October 1917.

“We moan and worry about the credit crunch but those people must have been on the breadline most of their lives. Robert was just one of many all over the country who lived equally stark and hard lives but they were mainly honest hardworking people and maybe we could learn some very basic life messages from them”Kind regardsColin James.

I was privileged to have known his wife Emma who eventually died in 1974 aged 104 years but didn’t think to ask her about her early years until it was too late.

Brief history of Robert Keeble (Keable)Born 1866 in Cratfield.Orphaned at 3 years old and taken in by Blything Union Workhouse.Worked as a farm labourer under the control of the workhouse.Enlisted in 1st Battalion Suffolk Regiment in 1885 for 12 years.Served and fought in India on the NW Frontier until 1892.Returned to England and served his remaining 5 years in the Army Reserve allowing him to lead a civilian life.Took job as bricklayer’s labourer in Bury St Edmunds.Met Emma Drake from Thurston and married in St James, Bury St Edmunds in 1895.Two sons born, George 1896 and Charles 1898.Recalled to 1st Battalion Suff. Reg. at the outbreak of the Boer War in 1899.Fought in several battles and was severely wounded in the shoulder, side and groin.Fortunate to survive and spent a year in Military Hospital in the UK before being discharged in 1902.Spent just 6 months at home with Emma and his boys before re-en-listing.Joined the Royal Garrison Regiment for two years and was posted to Gibraltar for the duration until 1904.He secured a job on a farm in Great Barton owned by a member of the Burrell family of Traction Engine fame.

Claimed Upgrade of Footpath 5, (Honeypot lane),Wattisfield, to Bridleway. The minutes of the Suffolk County Council Rights of Way Committee meeting on 6 November 2008 came into the Public Domain in January 2009 and can be accessed at www.suffolk.gov.uk. They were brought to the attention of Wattisfield Parish Council on Monday 19th January 2009 and read as follows:-“The Committee received a report at agenda item 10 from the Director of Environment and Transport in respect of a formal application for a Modi-fication Order under Section 53 (3)(c)(ii) to upgrade the route shown by the dashed line A-B-C, to a bridleway. The Committee was advised that a formal application had been re-ceived from Mrs J Price in January 2003 to upgrade footpath 5 in the parish of Wattisfield to a bridleway. This claim was supported by user evidence, and the report considered this evidence and documentary evidence to determine if there was sufficient evidence to upgrade the route to a bridleway. The Committee was advised of an alteration to paragraph 33 of the report which should have read as follows:“It is therefore recommended that a modification order be made to upgrade FP5 to bridleway. The following particulars are to be added to the definitive statement to replace the existing descrip-tion of FP5”.Councillor Charles Michell, spoke as the Local Member for Hartismere and on behalf of Mrs Beaumont, the owner of Honeypot Hall, and Mr Davie-Thornhill, the landowner. He advised the Committee that Mr Davie-Thornhill had lived at Honeypot Hall and had maintained the track which he used as a driveway to access the Hall. He allowed pe-destrians and cars to use the track, but prohibited lorries from using it. He asked the Committee to think about the maintenance arrange-ments for the track if it was to be adopted. He went on to advise the Committee that Mrs Beaumont had advised him that there had been a consistent problem of galloping horses along the track. He concluded by advising the Committee that Mr Davie-Thornhill still maintained the track but lived three miles away which made it difficult to prevent the

odd car, pedestrian or equestrian rider from using the route. He confirmed that Mr Davie-Thornhill was comfortable with allow-ing a reasonable amount of permitted access over the track. On the proposition of Councillor Morris Rose, seconded by Councillor Ron Ward, the Committee unanimously agreed that the proposal be rejected.Decision: The Committee agreed that the officer recommendation to make a Modification Order under Section 53 (3)(c)(ii) to upgrade the route shown by the dashed line A-B-C, to a bridleway, be rejected and that all interested parties be advised accordingly.Reason for the decision: The Committee agreed that in this instance the landowner had allowed individuals to use this track as a privilege rather than a right of access.”

Wattisfield Parish Council CORRECTION to the previous report.(in December’s Four Gazette) I stated that with the adoption of the new Local Plan, Wattisfield was designated an Open Countryside village. Wattisfield was in fact des-ignated a secondary village which means it retains its settlement boundary and some new infill development would be permitted, provided a need was shown. The council met in the village hall on Monday 15th December, 2008. 5 out of 7 parish councillors were present, plus District Cllr. Derek Osborne and WPO Pauline Sheldrake. No members of the public were present. Cllr. Osborne updated members on the happenings within MSDC.WPO Sheldrake stated that there had been 3 local crimes reported in the past month. This was instances of vandalism at the village hall.MSDC was still trying to find land within the village to purchase and use for affordable housing. This is a very important scheme to help local young people stay within the community and if anybody has land available, please let the Clerk know. The council reviewed and approved its budget for the 2009/10 financial year and set the year’s precept at £5000, which is the same as previous years.

That means the council tax for parish purposes for a band D property would be £25.29.With effect from 1st. January, 2009, the Council has adopted the new model publication scheme under the Freedom of Information Act which requires the council to make certain kinds of information routinely available to the public. Details will be shown on the village notice boards in due course.Following the refusal to upgrade the footpath connecting Honeypot Lane to Mannings Lane, subject to appeal, the council would like to remind residents that the track, which the footpath shares, is not for use by any unauthorised persons, other than those using the footpath, on foot. It is not permitted to be used as a cut through by unauthorised motor vehicles. The council were consulted on two planning applications, one 1 storey new dwelling at Park Farm, The Street and the other, to demolish Cornerways at Hinderclay Road and erect 2 x 2 storey dwellings. The Council opposed both applications.Andrew Catchpole, Clerk to Wattisfield Parish Council.Tel: 01449 780150, email: [email protected].

Nativity ServiceThe Nativity Carol Service at the village Hall on 14th December was made all the more delightful by the support of children from the village who played the parts of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, kings & angels. As we joined in with the traditional carol ‘Away in a Manager’ there was a real feeling that the Christmas season had finally begun. Special thanks go to the parents and grandparents who provided costumes and came along with the youngsters. Thanks too to all those who read lessons and poems. The evening was made all the more enjoyable by the large attendance of people from the village who really joined in with the singing. We are especially indebted to Emma Thorrold and Adrian Black who added to the atmosphere by playing live music. Special effects were kindly provided by Gavin Thorrold and Peter Gibbs. The evening was a joint venture between the URC and St Margaret’s and £55 was sent to St Nicholas’ Hospice who have recently replied to the URC expressing their delight at receiving this generous donation. So thank you to all who attended and supported this event.

The Window Returns! It was wonderful to see, just before Christmas, the west window in the church tower, which has been boarded up for repairs for several months, fully refurbished and looking really smart. We hope to repair some of the other windows, as soon as we have enough money from donations and grants. All contributions gratefully received!

Applications, which must be made in writing, are considered in confidence, and grants will be made at the Trustees’ discretion.Vera HoweThe funeral of Vera Howe took place at St Mary’s Hinderclay on December 23rd. She was 78. The service included an unusual hymn, ‘On the Resurrection Morning’, which was a favourite of her mother’s. After the service she was laid to rest near to her par-ents’ grave. A reception was held at the White Horse, Thelnetham. Vera was born in Hinderclay, one of four children of George and Elsie Howe. They lived in Church Cottages, the row of houses that used to stand next to the churchyard. She attended the Village school, and when she left school, she stayed at home with Mum, and worked part-time at the Village shop. She has lived at Victoria Gardens, Wattisfield for about 17 years. She kept in touch with her sisters, Jean in Surrey, and Evelyn at Hopton, and her brother Peter and his wife. In recent years she took great interest in her niece’s two young children. Above all, she loved walking, and was often to be seen out with her dog, in spite of having suffered with poor sight all her life. Last October she suffered a dreadful acci-dent, whilst crossing the main road at Wattisfield. It was amazing that she survived it at all – she had so many injuries. She was in Addenbrookes for six months, and then the Mabbs Hall Nursing
