from your President
As I sit and write this on the first day of fall, I am thankful to have a house over my head, food on my table, clothing to wear and family and friends to support me. As Cana-dians, we have much to be thankful for in October.October is one of my favourite months. I love the fall colours and one of my favour-ite childhood memories is playing in piles of leaves, making forts and houses as a youngster with my siblings. I enjoy the rustling noise the leaves make as the wind blows and I love to walk through the piles of fallen leaves especially in Confederation Park. Our gardens are coming to the end of the season, with lots of fresh produce and lots of work to tidy up for the winter. This October brings an important elec-tion for Canadians. Don’t forget our Politi-cal Forum on October 4th. Hopefully this forum will help you to clarify which issues are important to you and which party/can-didate you will vote for on October 21st. Please remember that you need to phone the centre to register for the forum as there is limited seating. October also brings Thanksgiving. Thanks-giving is a time to be reflective about your life as well as the many experiences/memories that you have. Family traditions encompass a big part of the celebration of Thanksgiving. That smell of turkey cook-ing in the oven, the mashed potatoes and gravy or sweet potatoes and vegetables of the season are all part of our Thanksgiving feast. Time spent with family and friends is
cherished after the busy summer of vaca-tions, travelling and summer as it comes to a close. We truly have many things to be thankful for. This fall, Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre has launched the President’s Ap-peal earlier than in other years. As many of you know, funding for non-profit agencies is becoming more difficult to obtain. Con-federation Park 55+ Activity Centre is run on a tight budget with grants from various organizations and both levels of govern-ment to compliment our coffers. However, we also need to fundraise on our own. One of the fund-raisers that has been suc-cessful in the past is the garage sale which is totally run by volunteers. The second major fund-raiser is the President’s Appeal. The centre and the Board of Directors are thankful for every donation of every single dollar we receive from our members in this campaign. We realize how tight many of your budgets are, especially those who are only on OAS, CPP and GIS. Thank you whatever donation you can manage!!!Fall at Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre is shaping up to be a busy one with classes, forums, special events and oppor-tunities to socialize and reconnect with old friends. I hope your October is an eventful one for you!!!

appy Thanksgiving All!! This is my favorite time of year. The nice weather and the changing leaves makes everything so beautiful!
We have made a lot of changes here in recent months and many of you have noticed! Thank you for all of your positive feedback. It is always nice to hear compliments on our hard work. Thanks for seeing the positive in change.
Our new sign in policy helps us to know who is in the building in case of an evacutation. Thanks for remembering to sign in daily.
New classes have been added to the slate and we are so pleased to see the great response. Online registration was even more popular than we expected with over 100 members signing up the first day. Well done! The surveys have been flying in and the parking passes have been flying out. Thank you for helping us out in this process!
A challenge we face is late registrations. We do not want to cancel classes, but it is necessary if enrollment is down because of latecomers. We have now instituted a deadline cut off date for
H
all classes to be registered. There will be no ex-ceptions for this. If you cannot make it in due to medical issues, please call and let us know. With the large number of classes and clubs, we simply cannot wait until the day of and then find out 5 people did not show. Not only is it time consuming to refund people, it means the instructor is out of wages for a cancelled class.
Refunds: Please note that refunding your credit card does not mean it shows on your bill the same day. Depending on the credit card company, it can take a few days.
I just want to remind people that there is zero tolerance for abusive behaviour at this centre.
Throwing things at staff, yelling or swearing will not be tolerated at all. We have had a number of instances in the first few weeks of registrations that were unacceptable. If you are angry, please make arrangements to meet with me and we will work through your concerns.
In closing, please enjoy a beautiful thanksgiving with your families and friends!

Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s “Gift from the Sea” was well received by the majority of the members. The book, published in 1955 while the author was holidaying on Florida’s Captiva Island, is a sharing of meditations on her life at that point and touches on such themes as age, love, marriage, peace and women’s place in society at that time. Each chapter is titled by a sea shell collect-ed from that area (Channeled Whelk, Moon Shell, Double-Sunrise, Oyster Bed, Argo-nauts) with comparisons made between herself and the characteristics of each shell. It is, perhaps, a book which could be picked up and read and re-read at different stages of the reader’s life.

REVIEW FROM TYLER JONES CALGARY PUBLIC LIBRARY
Blind Spotby Brenda Novak.
If you are in the mood for a fast paced page turner, then you might enjoy the Evelyn Talbot books. Dr. Evelyn Talbot is a woman with a traumatic past; at sixteen she was abducted, tortured and left for dead. Surviving this experience she decided to take control of her life by confronting her demons. She became an expert in criminal psychology and became director of Hanover House - a place where the most dangerous psychopaths are incarcer-ated. At the beginning of this book, the fourth in the series, Evelyn believes her personal nightmare is finally at an end. Pregnant and engaged, she is ready for a normal life to begin, when she is suddenly abducted. It is up to her fiancé - state trooper Amarok - to find her before it’s too late for both her and her unborn child.
Like many great thriller writers, Novak knows how to build tension to an exciting climax. Set in a remote Alaskan community, this series has the added interest of an unusual setting, with the add-ed twist that there is no help immediately avail-able from “the outside world”. Although characters develop throughout the series, this particular book can easily be read on its own. Definitely one to keep you up into the wee hours of the morning!

ALZHEIMER’S TIPS
Plan Ahead to Minimize Late-Day Confusion
If you’re caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, you may dread late afternoon and evening. That’s when a group of symptoms associated with this disease could become particularly challenging.
You may have heard it called “sundowning,” but this condition can best be described as late-day confusion. Do these symptoms that may be presenting in your loved one sound familiar? Anxiety, aggression, ignoring directions, pacing and wandering are behaviors that have been tied to “sundowning,” according to the experts.
So why is this late-day confusion so stressful for family caregivers? If you’ve experienced this with a loved one, you, no doubt, know the answer. These symptoms could inadvertently put a senior in harm’s way. One caregiver noted that her dad had left the house in the evening with his walker to look for his best friend’s house. His confusion later in the day resulted in an unsafe situation for him.
Five Things to Know About Late-Day Confusion 1. Avoid the triggers. A number of things could trigger this condition including fatigue,
low lighting, increased shadows, disruption of the body’s “internal clock,” difficultyseparating reality from dreams, and the presence of an illness such as a urinary tractinfection. Triggers vary from person to person, so it can be a good idea to check withyour loved one’s doctor to ensure there are no underlying health conditions ortriggers. Keeping a journal could also help identify the triggers.
2. Maintain a regular schedule. Experts say any disruption in schedule can lead tolate-day confusion. Try to keep a regular schedule for meals, bedtime, trips outsidethe home, etc.
3. Reduce noise and distractions. Any type of noise or outside distraction can createanxiety for an older adult with dementia. Try to minimize loud sounds or otherdisruptions that could cause stress for the senior in your life. Playing gentlebackground music may help.
4. Adjust lighting. Like sound, lighting can be a problem for those with Alzheimer’sdisease or another dementia. Try to keep lighting in the home consistent by drawingblinds or adjusting shades. Bright and glaring light could aggravate late-dayconfusion, the experts note.
5. Engage your loved one in meaningful and calming activities. Distract yoursenior during this time of day with activities. Have her help with dinner, read or watchthe news with him, work on a puzzle, tend the garden or sing songs
Professional in-home care could also be a choice to consider. Home Instead Senior Care® CAREGiversSM can be a reassuring presence in the home to help family caregivers avoid the pitfalls of late-day confusion.
